This article explores the relationship between Migrant CARE, a migrant labor NGO in Indonesia, and the Indonesian Migrant Workers Union in Hong Kong and their potential to advocate for better protection of migrant workers’ rights by the Indonesian government. Indonesia’s transition into democracy, Hong Kong’s promotion of civil rights and the United Nations International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Their Families provide opportunities for advocacy activism for Indonesian migrant workers and the possibility of cross-border cooperation of organizations in these two places. Previous studies show cross-border linkages of activism between Indonesia and Hong Kong but they do not pay attention to the factors that could promote sustaining the network. This article shows that both organizations have different strategies, alliance formations and ideologies in their activism. The differences between these organizations weaken their advocacy.

The thesis focuses on analysing the Vietnam‟s responsibilities as a worker - sending country (sending country) in protecting the rights of its migrant workers in accordance with international conventions adopted by the United Nations and the International Labour Organisation. The conventions used in the thesis to build up the analytical framework are: C097 - Migration for Employment Convention (Revised), 1949 (No. 97), C143 - Migrant Workers (Supplementary Provisions) Convention, 1975 (No. 143) and International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. This thesis evaluates the policies of protecting Vietnamese workers working overseas since 1980. Accordingly, it presents an analysis of Vietnam‟s policies on labour migration by putting Vietnam‟s laws in comparison with international conventions. The thesis indicates that although Vietnam has not ratified relevant international conventions to protect the rights of migrant workers, its national policies, legal system and practices have gradually approached these requirements in accordance with the actual situation of the country. In addition to the achievements of the policies, the thesis also pinpoints constraints in the police and the reasons for those constraints through an analysis of the policy implementation process. Thereby, the thesis suggests several implications to improve relevant policies and practices in Vietnam to better protect the rights of its migrant workers.

In this piece, the editor of Common Knowledge offers excerpts from his two-year correspondence with a reader in Hong Kong, who was drawn to arguments made in the journal about maintaining “quietism and resistance in the face of vile behavior.” In the summer and fall of 2019, during the insurrection in Hong Kong, his correspondent shifts rapidly from taking comfort in CK’s defense of quietism to a full embrace of “uncivil disobedience.” She implies that the solidarity the editor expresses with Hong Kong is merely rhetorical, and he responds by writing this article and quoting in it the entire text of the 1984 Joint Declaration of the Chinese and British governments on the question of Hong Kong. The declaration’s guarantees of autonomy and civil rights appear in bold italics. The editor concludes by suggesting that it falls to the United Nations Security Council to enforce the terms of the treaty.

A major trend in contemporary international migration is the recruitment of women as migrant workers, both documented and undocumented. This article discusses their invisibility and the efforts during the UN Decade for Women, 1976–85, to draw attention to their vulnerable situation and special circumstances. It considers how the United Nations International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families adopted by the General Assembly in December 1990 can provide increased protection for women as migrant workers and as family members. It also points out areas that remained unaddressed in alleviating their triple exploitation as females, workers and foreigners.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in the General Assembly on International Migration and Development, stated that since 1990-2010 the growth of international migration has increased significantly. It brings implications for the deployment of migrant workers that draw attention to the sending, transit, recipient countries, or a combination of the three catagories. Government should provide a clearer framework for migrant workers' rights to protect the migrant workers during preplacement, placement, and post-placement. This article draws on the results of the literature study and interviews with respondents in the field of employment. This article found a positive relations between the revised of Law No. 39/2004 and Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Bill as a followup of the ratification of the InternationalConvention on the Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers and their Families.---Sekretaris Jenderal PBB, Ban Ki Moon, dalam Rapat Majelis Umum mengenai Migrasi dan Perkembangan Internasional mengatakan bahwa dalam kurun waktu tahun 1990-2010, pertumbuhan migrasi internasional telah berkembang sangat pesat. Penelitian ini juga menemukan relasi positif antara Undang-undang No. 39/2004 dan Undang-undang Perlindungan Buruh Migran Indonesia sebagai hasil ratifikasi dari International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers and their Families.

Over the last two decades, Australia and Indonesia have built a remarkable partnership in the fight against terrorism and other transnational crimes. Common Enemies: Crime, Policy, and Politics in Australia–Indonesia Relations is the first in-depth study of this partnership, examining both its successes and its failures. Drawing on over 100 interviews and extensive archival material, the book tells the inside story of the joint police investigation into the 2002 terrorist bombings in Bali, the extradition of Indonesian corruption fugitive Adrian Kiki Ariawan, the public campaigns in support of Australians detained in Indonesia for drug trafficking, and the 2013 spying scandal that led to a freeze in cooperation. It also investigates many cases that never made the headlines in an effort to understand the conditions that promote criminal justice cooperation between these two very different countries. The book reveals a tension between parochial politics and policy ambition at the heart of the bilateral relationship, and explores how politicians, bureaucrats, and private actors animate this tension. It also considers how various ‘wars on crime’ since the 1970s have shaped the relationship, and the importance of reciprocity in maintaining the relationship. Based on this analysis, it identifies strategies for enhancing cross-border cooperation to combat crime. The mix of engaging case studies and novel theorizing in Common Enemies will appeal to both practitioners and scholars of transnational policing, international relations, regulation, and global governance.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to develop a value-creation measurement which is applicable to the supplier–overseas distributor relationship. As cross-border cooperation is increasingly important, there is yet no appropriate scale to measure the relationship value between the supplier and the distributor in cross-boundary context. Design/methodology/approach – With a view to establishing the measurement scale for the relationship value created between manufacturer and its overseas distributor, this study uses exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and regression to test reliability, convergent validity, discriminant validity and nomological validity of the scale. Findings – The scale is made up of six factors, including “customer service”, “relationship interaction”, “cost reduction”, “product promotion”, “product sales” and “information offering”; subsequent statistical tests strongly support the measurement. Research limitations/implications – First, the sample collection was not conducted randomly, and the sample was limited to 190 valid questionnaires. Future research might be conducted randomly or in a longitudinal fashion to increase the sample size. Second, this study focuses mainly on manufacturers in the mechanical parts industry and was conducted unilaterally to discuss the creation of relationship value. It is suggested that future researchers investigate relationship value generated in cross-border cooperation from a bilateral perspective or discuss cooperative relationships in other industries. Practical implications – This study creates a functional scale to measure the supplier–distributor value creation in cross-border cooperation, and it proves that six factors pertaining to relationship value have significant positive correlation with operating performance; in this regard, in supplier–distributor cooperative relationship, more value the distributor creates for its supplier, the better the operating performance of the supplier will be. Originality/value – In the academic sense, this measurement will be of substantial help to future empirical research on a larger scale. When applied to practice, this measurement supplements the extant body of value-measuring tools and works as an evaluation index for choosing overseas distributor.

The importance of this research stems from the need to ensure the sustainability of cross-border cooperation through a better understanding of its determinants and causal relationships. While having common features and patterns, cross-border cooperation is always expressed through the relations of specific countries and peoples. Therefore, based upon the PLS-SEM methodology, the authors consider the fundamental factors influencing the external cooperation of Hungary’s transboundary regions. The advantage of the PLS-SEM method is that it enables researchers to simultaneously identify and approximate hidden connections between input data and to construct a regression model describing the relationship between input data. Despite widespread application in economic studies, the authors have not found the use of PLS-SEM for studying cross-border cooperation issues in the current scientific literature. The authors have built a model to assess the hidden factors of cross-border cooperation and to identify the indirect influence of certain factors. The novelty of the research is to identify the determinants of sustainable cross-border cooperation and the relationship between them in a multi-level system of cross-border interaction between businesses, people, and the State. In the Hungarian context, transport infrastructure and business travel are shown to have a direct positive impact on cross-border cooperation. For the first time, tourism and socio-economic conditions have been shown to have powerful but indirect impacts. This work could be the beginning of gathering new evidence on the determinants and causation of cross-border cooperation in the context of other countries. An important finding of the study is the growing importance of indicators of the new, post-industrial economy. As for recommendations, the authors focus on state, regional, and municipal support measures, awareness of the possibilities of cross-border cooperation, the need to develop e-commerce, and alternative energy as a modern basis for converting Hungary’s cross-border position into a competitive advantage.
