Hospitality is a ritual liminal-stage relationship with transformative power. In this article, I am testing my thesis about hospitality within the third epistle of John. In writing recommendation for strangers, the elder of 3 John sought to speed up the ritual liminal stage of hospitality so as to make strangers acceptable to the local church. Gaius was ready to give the strangers a chance and to enter the liminal stage for the purpose of transforming them into a new status as his household's friends. On the other hand, Diotrephes practiced patronage, which included no liminality and no expectation of passage or transformation of social roles, but rather kept the social status quo and protected his area of influence. It follows from this analysis that hospitality with its liminality contributes to social change and renewal, while patronage contributes to social stability and continuation.

This chapter focuses on the life and achievements of Sri Narayana Guru, a transformative figure in the social, political, and intellectual landscape of modern Kerala whose impact has been felt across all communities even as he remains a largely unknown figure in north India. The manner in which one person's intervention in one community is receiving attention from individuals and groups beyond the shores of Kerala and outside the original community within which he had his receptivity is shown as providing the transformative power to effect social change not only in Kerala but even beyond. Narayana Guru and his successors in the Gurukula Foundation lineage provide the vantage point for the potential of the movement. The unique approach of the Guru in challenging domination without antagonizing the other nor deprecating the elegance of the self, cutting through the societal sham, offers a renewed 'advaita' accessible to all, as argued in this chapter.

In Belgium the European elections and those for the regional councils were held on the same day. The elections of June 13th 2004 deserve a threefold analysis. First a comparison can be made with the results obtained five years ago for the same assemblies. lt shows that in Flanders the socialist party has progressed but that this advance was mainly due to the constitution of a cartel with one faction - Spirit - of the defunct Volksunie. The christian democrats made headway, their progress being enhanced by the contribution of N-VA, the other faction stemming from the Volksunie. The liberals declined fairly markedly as did the green party but to a lesser extent than in the elections for the federal parliament. The June 2004 elections saw above all progress for the extreme right Vlaams Blok, which has become the second biggest party of Flanders with 24 pct of the vote. In the Walloon provinces the socialists progress most thereby increasing the gap separating them from the liberals. The christian democrats advance somewhat while the green party Ecolo declines substantially.  The parties of the far right gain support and reach 8.73 pct of the vote. In Brussels the socialist advance is very marked allowing this party to conquer first place to the detriment of the liberals who are in decline. The progress made by frenchspeaking christian democrats is significant.A second approach for the analysis consists in comparing the results of the regional elections with those of the European ones. The differences are slight and rnainly due to the popularity of the candidates. In Belgium there was no "eurosceptic" or "sovereignty" list.  The third angle consists in comparing the 2004 results with the ones of the parliamentary elections of 2003. One then observes in Flanders a decline of the socialists, a significant fall in support for the liberals and a progression of the christian democrats. But the main development remains the progression of the Vlaams Blok which gains more than 6 pct compared to its good result of 2003.  In the Walloon provinces, the socialists remain at their 2003 level but increase their positive gap with regard to the liberals who are in decline. The christian democrats advance by some 2 pct whereas Ecolo recovers a small part of its 2003 loss. The parties of the far right gain some 1.5 pct. In Brussels, the most noteworthy developrnent is the progress of the frenchspeaking socialists who take over the first place from the liberals.In genera!lthese elections are characterised by a reinforcement of the far right to the detriment of the centre parties and by a status quo of the aggregate consisting of socialists and greens, but to the benefit of the former.

- The article summarizes the results of a research conducted on the social policies change in Naples, particularly in Scampěa and in North Area of the city. This change saws the active involvement of the third sector organizations in the process of implementation of policies. The survey pays special attention to the process of welfare networking developed in the Area, although this involved a deep reconsideration, on the part of researchers, about the risks of contamination of the research as subject get closer. The involvement of an Association, among those most active in the area, while allowed more direct understanding of decision making, on the other hand became a strong pressure. Mediation among the scientific aims and those expressed by the Association led to a deviation of the original research design.Key words: social policies, suburbs, poverty, school dropout, voluntary, welfare

In this article the Baptist is compared with the upper-class/literate millennialists behind the Psalms of Solomon, the Testament of Moses, the Similitudes of 1 Enoch, and the Qumran scrolls on the one hand, and with the lower-class/illiterate millennialist movements in Josephus on the other hand. The argument is developed in constant dialogue with the analyses of John Dominic Crossan. After an initial statement of historical facts about the Baptist, these are compared with the named groups in terms of each one’s (1) criticism of the social-political and religious status quo, (2) depiction of the imagined mediator through whom God was expected to intervene, (3) portrayal of the violent/non-violent intervention of God and the group respectively, and (4) social ethics. It is concluded that John shows closer resemblance to the literate than illiterate millennialists, and should therefore rather be considered as a dissident retainer.

This is only the third full-scale biography of Locke to be published in the 300 years since his death in 1704. At least two others, however, are said to be in the works: one by Mark Goldie, the other by John Milton, both eminent Locke scholars. It is true that both of these projects are described on their authors’ web sites as ‘intellectual’ biographies, but the range of writings on Locke that both have already published suggests that their focus will be no more limited than Woolhouse’s is in his ‘Biography’. Woolhouse gives full accounts of Locke’s non-intellectual activities and of the social and historical context within which he worked. But he also pays a lot of attention to his subject’s intellectual development and accomplishment.

In this chapter, the author discusses the radical transformative power of somatics and the ways that somatics practice directly affects the precognitive sensibility of the Other; he calls this transformation of the Other “somatics affecting.” Drawing on his current research that integrates approaches to medicine and somatics in the emergent field of neuroethics, the author explains how somatics, especially through kinesthesia, provides a means of bridging the distinct realms of phenomenology and neuroscience. To this end, he analyzes the transformative qualities of somatics in terms of neurobiology and phenomenology, and especially the radical idea adapted from the phenomenological writings of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Emmanuel Levinas. He elucidates the relation between somatics and phenomenonology as disciplines of subjectivity by linking them to the natural sciences. Finally, he illustrates the transformative potential of somatics affecting through a comparison with the social neuroscience understanding of empathy.

More than a decade of research from the perspective of system-justification theory (Jost & Banaji, 1994) has demonstrated that people engage in motivated psychological processes that bolster and support the status quo. We propose that this motive is highly contextual: People do not justify their social systems at all times but are more likely to do so under certain circumstances. We describe four contexts in which people are prone to engage in system-justifying processes: (a) system threat, (b) system dependence, (c) system inescapability, and (d) low personal control. We describe how and why, in these contexts, people who wish to promote social change might expect resistance.

TV-panel discussions constitute a communicative genre with specific features concerning the situational context, the communicative goals, the roles played by the participants and the acts that are carried out in the interaction. In the Spanish TV-debate Cada día, discourse is characterized as semi-institutional because of having both institutional characteristics – due to its mediatic nature – and conversational characteristics. In the communicative exchanges the social situation of the participants is negotiated by communicative acts, that is, facework is realised. Facework concerns the speakers’ wants of face, both the individual face and the group face. In the present article face is described in cultural terms within the general face wants autonomy and affiliation and in accordance with the roles the speakers assume in interaction. In the analysis of an excerpt from the TV-debate Cada día two types of facework are identified: On the one hand politeness, that is, when an attempted balance between the speaker’s and the addressees’ face is aimed at and, on the other hand, self-facework, which appears when only the speaker’s face is focused on. No samples of the third case of facework, impoliteness, are found in this excerpt. The results of the analysis display the relationship between the communicative purposes of this communicative genre (to inform, to entertain and to convince people of political ideas) and the types of facework (politeness, self-facework) that are identified in the analysed data.

Transition of individual social status is adjusted to the profession occupied in society, both based on knowledge, appreciation in the form of honor and power. Changes in the profession can occur because of science, maturation of a household, self-introspection and leaving all positions in this world to more complex stages.
