Caste and exchange theories predict that Whites who enter into interracial relationships seek to trade their racial status for relational capital (i.e., physical attractiveness, financial security). Racial minorities, on the other hand, are likely to trade such assets for higher racial status. However, previous research concerning interracial relationships has concentrated on couples who are already established; thus, the existing literature is of limited use in examining the initial decisions of individuals choosing to date interracially. In this article, content analysis of personal advertisements is reported. It was found that race is insignificant as to whether the advertisers desired or sought physical attractiveness or financial security. Increased availability, not factors predicted by caste and exchange theories, is more explanatory as to why individuals enter into interracial relationships.

Over the years, scholars have sought to provide language-based typologies of names, but while attempts have been made for some sub-branches of onomastics such as anthroponymy and toponymy, there is arguably none for ecclesionymy (the study of church names). Consequently, this paper sought to provide a language based typology of the hitherto underexplored area of church names. Data of names of churches in Ghana was built for the present study. Adopting content analysis as the analytical approach, the study realized that church names in Ghana are generally homogenous and heterogeneous linguistically. It was also realized that homogenous/unilingual church names involved English only, Akan only and Ewe only. On the other hand, the heterogeneous church names comprised two types: bilingual and trilingual church names, which contained varied language permutations from the three spheres in Osei Yaw Akoto’s classification of languages in Ghana. The paper concludes by making some recommendations for language-in-religion policy in Ghana. Keywords: Church names, Ecclesionymy, Glocal language, Unilingual

Along with the growing use of twitter as a tool of political interaction, recently, there has also been an attention in the academia to understand and explain how and why politicians use twitter, and what its impact on the political outcomes are. On the other hand, there has been little analysis about the content of the tweets that politicians from different parties posted during major political events. Accordingly, this study aims to investigate the discourse strategies that the top-level politicians of the party in power and of the main opposition party in Turkey used in their tweets during Gezi Park events in the summer of 2013. Findings from a hand-coded content analysis based on Van Dijk's framework (2006) indicate that while the most frequently used strategy was actor descriptions and categorization for both parties' politicians, burden strategy and lexicalization / metaphor strategy were used significantly more by the main opposition party politicians compared to the politicians of the party in power.

This article has two objectives. The first is to study the concepts of Competitive Intelligence and Dynamic Capabilities, aiming to verify if the stages of the competitive intelligence cycle can constitute stimulating elements for Dynamic Capabilities in organizations. The second goal is to understand how the competitive intelligence process is dealt with in medium- and large-sized companies in Brazil, grounded on opinions by specialists on the topic (scholars, researchers and consultants). For its consecution, besides the literature review on the subject, information was collected by means of in-depth interviews and, seeking triangulation of data, a comparative research was conducted on similar studies. It is a qualitative research that applies content analysis as its technique for investigation. The study supports that the routines in the stages of the competitive intelligence cycle and the abilities required for its operationalization foster the mobilization of Dynamic Capabilities in organizations. Competitive Intelligence, through a suitable development of the activities established in its phases, promotes the perception for change (sensing) and provides the necessary intelligence for the acquiring of the knowledge which will be the foundation for action (seizing), thus contributing for the continuous reinvention of the business (transforming). On the other hand, evidences suggest that Competitive Intelligence practices are still in their embryonic stages of application in Brazilian companies, and therefore need efforts for further qualification and consolidation.

The objective of this research was to analyze how students’ ability in applying modulation techniques in translating collocation from the novel “The Lost Symbol” by Dan Brown. The research was a content analysis of descriptive qualitative. There were 25 students taken as respondent, there were represented from each class. The data were collected by using a translation test which was contained six types of collocation. The finding showed that students’ability is dominant in collocation type of adjective and noun because to translate it just simple and the phrase of the word is most familiar in their activities not also in translation subject but other skill language material. In the other hand, the students’ low ability to translate collocation of Verb and expression with a preposition because they could not just use the literal translation but they have to adapt it or changing their point of view and use their cognitive and focus on the context, which makes relevant and coherent. However, overall the average of students ability must be improved it with learning more and lecturer must be able to focus on students’ weakness in applying translation technique, especially on modulation to get the progress by the students’ translation well.

Based upon the 55 days of lockdown that occurred during the Covid_19 disaster, the aim of this article is to answer to the following research question: “how can we characterize influencers in social networks?”. Analyzing more than 1.6 million of tweets, we propose a matrix that can be used to characterize an influencer. This matrix has 2 dimensions on one hand the five courses of actions an influencer can use and on the other hand the 3 types of motivation he has got. Regarding the methodology we used R and a qualitative content analysis and provided our scripts. This research is a part of the “lockdown lab” project.

Zakat is one of the Islamic financial instruments which is obligatory for every Muslim whose earnings reach the prescribed amount (nishab). On the other hand taxes must still be paid as an obligation of every citizen. Under the law, it is stated that zakat can be a deduction from taxable income. The aim of this research is to offer a more advanced concept, namely zakat can be a deduction from income tax. The technique used in this research is content analysis on the literatures discussing about zakat and tax in Islam. The results of this study suggest that zakat as a deduction from income tax has a greater impact than zakat as merely a deduction from taxable income. Zakat as a deduction from income tax will increase the impact of zakat in a larger economy.

This research paper was aimed at providing a thorough content analysis on memes’ linguistic aspect and further understanding them in the light of their usage as political propaganda. A total of 60 memes were culled from July 2016 to December 2018. According to the memes’ linguistic and visual organization, they have the ability to create and simplify complex political narratives by employing primarily the categories of Shops, Text, and Stacked Stills based on Milner’s (2012) Taxonomy of Meme Collectives. The memes’ humor signifiers were mainly intertextuality, parody, and binary opposition which highlighted how memes are contextual in nature and use exaggeration and opposing concepts to elicit humor. On the other hand, the memes vary in their respective denotations as well as in their connotations which often point to humanization and discreditation. Lastly, for the memes’ propaganda characteristics, they possess all 10 of Walton’s (1997) propaganda characteristics while the audience perceived 9 out of 10 through the conducted survey. This proves that memes do have the potential to be used as tools for propaganda because of their inherent manipulation of complex political narratives which are furthered through the use of humor.

Abstract The article at hand is driven by a methodological interest in the opportunities and challenges of applying an automated text mining approach, particularly a sentiment analysis on various tourism blogs at the same time. The study aims to answer the question to what extent advanced computational methods can improve the data acquisition and analysis of unstructured data sets stemming from various blogs and forums. Furthermore, the authors intend to explore to what extent the sentiment analysis is able to objectify the qualitative results identified by an earlier analysis by the authors using content analysis done by thematic coding. For the purpose of the specific tourism research question in this paper a new approach is proposed, which consists of a combination of sentiment analyses, supervised learning, and dimensionality reduction in order to identify terms that strongly load on specific emotions. The contribution indicates on the one hand, that advanced computational methods have their own specific constraints, but on the other hand, are able to provide a richer and deeper analysis following a quantitative approach. Several issues have to be taken into account, such as data protection constraints, the need for data cleaning, such as word stemming, dimension reduction, such as removal of custom stop words, and the development of descent ontologies. On the other hand, the quantitative method also provides, due to its standardised procedure, a less subjective insight in the given content, but is not less time consuming than traditional content analysis.

In Malaysia, the burgeoning of Islamic cultures and lifestyles including the expansion and stringent shariah implementation, Islamic fashions and Islamic programs or events are all associated with deepening conservatism. On one hand, it is perceived as a promising development, but on the other hand it is also presumed as a threat to tolerance and moderate values endorsed by Islam. This is simply because conservatism is often misinterpreted as extreme, exclusive, discriminative and oppressive attitudes and actions. But does conservatism really reflect and promote those detrimental values? How does conservatism as a concept that often used in political and social discourse can be used as a tool to explain religious phenomena? Using content analysis, this paper attempts to uncover the concept of conservatism from the theological and philosophical perspectives and discusses the relevance of conservatism and other existing categories of Islamic thought in Malaysia. This paper proposes that conservatism is a philosophy that is against the idea of autonomy of reason without revelation. Conservatism therefore is known as “philosophy of imperfection.” Any negative attitudes or actions are not caused by conservatism, nevertheless, they are due to the sole dependence on imperfect human reason that is unaided but revelation. This finding has revisited and redefined the existing concept of conservatism and other categories of Islamic thought according to Malaysian context and consequently explains the by-product of the burgeoning of Islamic cultures and lifestyles in Malaysia. Future research should focus on empirical method to assess conservatism and its effects on Malaysian society. Katakunci: Islam, budaya, konservatisme, pemikiran, Malaysia

Victimogenic situation is a private variety of criminogenic situation where one of the main actors of the criminal drama, along with a perpetrator, is a specific victim of the crime, though being not merely a target of the crime, but the person who, thanks to his/her behaviour and particular personal characteristics, objectively contributes to the commission of the crime against himself/herself. The study of a victimogenic situation and appropriate prevention must be based on a consistent methodology, according to which an individual criminal behaviour arises from the interaction of personality (individual) and a particular real-life situation. A victim in the victimogenic situation is almost as active as the perpetrator. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the specific nature of the circumstances in this strange tandem of “perpetrator-victim”, which characterises the personality and behaviour of the offender, on the one hand and the personality and behaviour of the victim, on the other hand.
