To investigate the visual ability (the ability to perform everyday tasks) of adolescents with visual impairment (VI) at the Arthur Blaxall School in Pietermaritzburg. This study was an observational, descriptive research study conducted at the Arthur Blaxall School for children and adolescents with VI. Students registered at the school aged between 10 and 19 years were recruited using convenience sampling. Visual ability was assessed with the Cardiff Visual Ability Questionnaire for Children (CVAQC). Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The sample consisted of 70 participants with a mean age of 13.83 ± 2.28 years. The most common cause of VI was oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) followed by posterior segment disorders. The mean visual ability score was −0.27 ± 0.74 log units, and the most difficult tasks were reading the smallest print in textbooks and the chalkboard in the classroom. Males and participants aged 14–19 years had significantly better visual ability than females and participants aged 10–13 years, respectively. Participants with anterior segment disorders had the poorest visual ability while those with OCA had relatively better visual ability. The variation of visual ability and therefore quality of life, regardless of the cause of VI, needs to be considered when managing individuals with VI. Furthermore, younger adolescents may experience more difficulty coping with VI than older adolescents. The results of this study form a baseline for future studies to compare the visual ability of adolescents with VI attending mainstream schools.

Individuals with ocular and oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) have significantly reduced visual acuity (VA) resulting in visual impairment (VI). The aim is to report on the visual function of adolescents with OCA and their quality of life (QoL) in terms of their visual ability. A total of 28 adolescents with OCA participated in this study. Tests of visual function included distance VA, refractive error, contrast sensitivity (CS), and colour vision. The Cardiff Visual Ability Questionnaire for Children (CVAQC) was used to assess visual ability. All participants presented with cutaneous hypopigmentation and nystagmus, while only two had strabismus. A mean myopic refractive error was found, and with-the-rule (WTR) astigmatism was most common. The mean best-corrected VA was 0.81 ± 0.17 logMAR and 0.81 ± 0.18 logMAR in the right and left eyes, respectively. The mean CS with the best refractive correction was 1.23 ± 0.33 log CS in the right eye and 1.29 ± 0.33 log CS in the left eye. The mean Cardiff visual ability score was −0.37 ± 0.79 log units. The variation of refractive errors and the magnitude thereof underscores the need for regular eye examinations in individuals with OCA. The majority of participants had moderate VI, and these participants had a better mean Cardiff visual ability score than those with severe VI. Similarly, participants with normal binocular CS had a better Cardiff visual ability score than those with a loss of CS.

Abstract Purpose: This study aimed to assess the burden of care and its relationship with sleep quality of cancer patients’ caregivers. Methods: This descriptive-correlational study was conducted in a referral center of cancer in Zanjan, northwest of Iran. 135 caregivers of cancer patients were recruited through convenience sampling method. The data were collected using a demographic characteristics questionnaire, Novak and Guest’s caregiver burden inventory and Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI). The collected data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The mean (± SD) age of the participants was 39.71 (± 10.74) years. The mean (± SD) burden of care and sleep quality of the participants was 45.22 (± 17.75) and 8.88 (± 4.21), respectively. It was found that there is a significant positive relationship between burden of care and quality of sleep scores (r = 0.65, P < 0.001).Conclusion: cancer patients’ caregivers endure a remarkable burden of care and their sleep quality is undesirable. Results indicated that an increase in the burden of care reduces the caregiver’s quality of sleep. High burden of care and poor sleep quality may reduce the quality of the provided care that increase the costs and weakens the disease prognosis. According to the study results, reducing burden of care is an effective strategy regarding improving the caregivers’ quality of sleep that can improve the quality of provided cares by caregivers.

The conceptual framework of quality of life (QOL) have received considerable attention within students with visual impairment. The main purpose of this study was to analyse the QOL of children and adolescents with low vision and blindness. Data were collected from 18 children and adolescents, and respective parents ( n = 18). QOL was assessed by the KIDSCREEN 52 questionnaire. Cronbach’s alpha and correlations were calculated to examine the psychometric properties of the scale in the visual impairment field. The scale showed suitable internal consistency and construct validity. The findings highlighted that the mean scores were higher in participants with low vision, in male group, and in children. Furthermore, children and adolescents reported higher scores regarding their QOL than their parents. The results emphasized the importance of collecting information from the person about his or her own life to know the personal outcomes, as well as the perception of their parents.
