Social Media Usage, Psychosocial Wellbeing and Academic Performance

Psychosocial wellbeing questionnaires were administered to Dire Dawa Polytechnic college students ( n, 204) to examine the interrelationship of social media usage, psychosocial wellbeing, and academic performance. The result revealed that male students use social media for the reason of making new relationships and female participants used social media to maintain the relationship, those students who spend more time on Facebook followed by telegram and Whatsapp. Results of the Pearson correlation indicated that the academic performance of students negatively correlated and significantly with social media usage (telegram, Facebook, and Whatsapp), while they are positively correlated with self-esteem. Besides, depression correlated positively with telegram, Facebook, and Whatsapp usage. Facebook usage was significantly and negatively correlated with students' self-esteem and social anxiety. Moreover, female students were low self-esteem and more depressed than male students regarding social media usage. Students who had a low level of social media usage are better in their psychosocial wellbeing than those students who had a high and moderate level of media usage.

Purpose This study aims to determine the impact of social media usage on university student’s academic performance in Ghana. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative research method was used for the study. With the aid of a simple random sampling technique, quantitative data were obtained from 373 out of 400 respondents representing 93 per cent of volunteered participants. Data collected was analysed using structural equation modelling to establish the relationship among social media information, social media entertainment, social media innovation, social media knowledge generation and student performance. Findings The findings of this study indicate that social media information, social media innovation and social media entertainment all had a significant positive influence on social media knowledge generation, which has wide learning and knowledge management implications. Also, the study indicated that information computer technology knowledge moderates the relationship between social media and student performance. Research limitations/implications The sample taken was mainly cross-sectional in nature rendering the inference of causal relationships between the variables impossible. Future researchers should adopt a longitudinal research design to examine causality. Finally, the study was limited to only university students in Accra, Ghana. Future research can extend to a bigger student population and to other West African and African countries. Practical implications This paper will serve as a profitable source of information for managers and researchers who may embark on future research on social media and academic performance. The findings that social media information, innovation and entertainment can likewise enhance social media knowledge generation can help managers and university teachers to use the vehicle of innovation and entertainment to communicate knowledge. Social implications The findings of this study will help policymakers in education and other industries that engage the youth to realise the important factors that can make them get the best in the social media space. Originality/value Social media usage in academic performance is increasingly prevalent. However, little is known about how social media knowledge generation mediates between social media usage and academic performance and, furthermore, whether the information computer technology knowledge level of students moderates the relationship between social media knowledge generation and academic performance of university students in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Ghana. Theoretically, the findings of this study provide clear research evidence to guide various investigations that can be done on the relationships of the variables under social media usage, knowledge generation and university student performance, which advances the diffusion of new knowledge.

Social media usage is known to harness new lifestyle among the youth. Use of social media promotes the negative as well as positive consequences for the students in general and academic life. This study examined the relationship between social media usage, multitasking of social media, and students' academic self-efficacy on students' academic performance among Malaysian youth. The current work also evaluates the mediating effect of students' academic self-efficacy on social media usage and social media multitasking on their academic performance. This study embraced a cross-sectional research design and quantitative data collected from 644 Malaysian students of higher education institutions. The collected data were analysed using SPSS v23 and PLS-SEM-based SmartPLS 3.1. The findings revealed that social media usage and social media multitasking are positively and significantly related to students' self-efficacy. Moreover, the results also showed that social media usage and multitasking, and students' self-efficacy are significantly associated with their academic performance. The results also exposed the mediational effect of students' self-efficacy on the relationship between social media multitasking and students' academic performance in higher education. The study recommends that by initiating the self-efficacy program in promoting social media's academic use and multitasking among Malaysian higher education students would result in better performance. Abstract Purpose of the study: This research study explores the relationship between life satisfaction, self-esteem, and academic performance of university students. Methodology: A quantitative approach was used to explore the relationship among life satisfaction, self-esteem, and academic performance of university students. In this study, a survey method was employed to collect quantitative data on life satisfaction, self-esteem, and academic performance from 575 students studying in three different public universities of Punjab (Pakistan). A self-esteem scale as a survey instrument initially developed by Rosenberg (1965) and a life satisfaction scale developed by Gilligan and Huebner (2002) were used to collect data. A third scale was developed by the researchers to measure the students’ academic performance. The assembled data were statistically examined using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation by using SPSS 20th Version. Results: Findings of the study reveal that the level of life satisfaction among university students is comparatively higher than the presence of self-esteem and academic performance. Findings of the study show significant positive associations of university students’ academic performance with their life satisfaction and self-esteem. Applications of this study: This study helps strengthen the factors that promote university students’ academic performance. Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty of this study is to explore the relationship among life satisfaction, self-esteem, and academic performance of university students for strengthening different dimensions of life satisfaction and self-esteem which ultimately promote university students’ academic performance.

The present study investigates the relationship between parent and peer attachment bonds on the development of self-esteem during late adolescence. The sample was randomly selected. Data was collected from 387 participants including 166 male and 221 female students from seven high schools of the Shkoder Municipality in Albania. A self-developed Demographic Questionnaire, Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (Armsden & Greenberg, 1987) and Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965) were administered. A Pearson Correlation and Independent sample t-test were applied. Specific attention is focused on the assessment of attachment in adolescence. The results show the existence of a significant positive correlation between parental/peer attachment and self-esteem. Concerning gender differences during late adolescence, females showed higher attachment with parents and peers than males, but there were no gender differences in self-esteem. This research enables us to develop new insight into the importance of parent and peer attachment for a healthy adolescence.

ABSTRACT: RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE INTENSITY OF INSTAGRAM SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE WITH SELF ESTEEM  Self-esteem is formed by interactions with other people. At present, social interaction can not only be done in the real world but can also be done in the virtual world, through social media such as Instagram. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the intensity of Instagram social media usage and self-esteem. This research is a quantitative study with a correlational design. The sample in this study were 205 undergraduate students of Malahayati University, aged between 17 to 25 years. The data in this study were obtained using an Instagram social media intensity usage questionnaire and a self-esteem scale. The results of data analysis using Spearman's rho show that there is a significant positive relationship between intensity of Instagram social media usage and self-esteem. Keywords: Intensity of Social Media Usage, Instagram, Self Esteem Harga diri terbentuk dari interaksi dengan orang lain. Saat ini untuk melakukan interaksi sosial tidak hanya dapat dilakukan didunia nyata namun juga dapat dilakukan didunia maya, melalui media sosial seperti instagram. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara intensitas penggunaan media sosial instagram dengan harga diri. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain korelasional. Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah 205 mahasiswa S1 Universitas Malahayati, berusia antara 17 sampai 25 tahun. Data dalam penelitian ini diperoleh menggunakan kuesioner intensitas penggunaan media sosial instagram dan skala harga diri. Hasil analisis data menggunakan Spearman’s rho menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan positif yang signifikan antara intensitas penggunaan media sosial instagram dengan harga diri. Kata Kunci: Intensitas Penggunaan Media Sosial, Instagram, Harga Diri

Social media can be used to increase individual popularity, one of which is Instagram. Instagram can be used to increase individual self-popularity or increase self-esteem. The purpose of this study, namely to determine the relationship between the intensity of using Instagram and self-esteem in emerging adulthood. This research is a quantitative-survey research, with 259 students at “X” University as many as male and female participants aged 18-25 years. The measuring instrument used is the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale and the Instagram Intensity Scale. The analysis used was the Spearman non-parametric correlation test. The results show that there is a significant correlation between the intensity of using Instagram and self-esteem on emerging adulthood, there is also a correlation between emotional attachment to Instagram and self-esteem on emerging adulthood. Thus the higher the intensity of using Instagram or the higher the emotional attachment to Instagram, the higher the self-esteem of emerging adulthood. The higher the intensity of a person using Instagram, the higher the desire or motivation of the individual to become more prominent.

Research and theories on gender differences in self-esteem and depression as well as the relationship between self-esteem and depression play an important role in the field of psychology. In the current study, we explore these two issues with Vietnamese university students. The levels of self-esteem and depression were assessed with a sample of 859 university students drawn from three universities in central Vietnam. The results showed that Vietnamese university students have moderate self-esteem and most do not suffer from depression. As expected, the male students reported significantly higher self-esteem than theirfemale fellows; however, the female students reported higher levels of depression than the male ones. The results also revealed that self-esteem was negatively correlated with depression. The research contributes to the understanding of the gender differences between the two mental health factors and the relationship between them among Vietnamese university students. These findings are important to the development of intervention strategies that help improve self-esteem and prevent depression in university students.

The purpose of preparing this research paper is to explain the relationship between the excessive social media use and insomnia disorder among female students in Hail University, although identifying the differences in excessive use, and insomnia among the sample members. The descriptive-correlational approach was followed, and the sample was chosen in a stratified random manner, as the sample reached 360 students from various disciplines. Social media behavioral addiction indices were measured using the Social Media Usage Scale (SMU), and insomnia disorder measured using an (ID) scale. The results of the study show that there is a statistical correlation between the use of social media and insomnia disorders. Well as the relationship between the type of social media and the number of accounts and preferred social media and insomnia disorders, and the value of each was <0.05. The study concluded that female university students suffer from excessive use of social media, which negatively affected the quality of sleep and their mood.
