Socio-environmental dimensions of contemporary rurality Abstract The text addresses the rural environment in the Curitiba Metropolitan Area and in Paraná’s northern coastal area in its heterogeneity, rural area as a space of conflicting environmental interests; as a space of socially created risk; as a space of reencounter with nature; and as a space for the emergence of new social actors. Owing to the organizational processes that are taking place in rural areas, and as a function of acknowledging the diversity of existing socio-environmental situations and different strategies implemented by different actors to reproduce themselves, it can be said that there is vitality in the rural social groups as they recreate their trajectories and include them as elements of the history of their territory.

This paper analyses demographic trends and population decline of the rural area surrounding Niksic, Montenegro, from the second half of the 20th century to the first two decades of the 21st century. After World War II, industry in Niksic began to develop strongly. A large number of state enterprises started to operate, and the consequent industrialisation and improved living conditions triggered a wave of migration from the surrounding rural areas to Niksic. The paper describes the depopulation of rural areas and the causes and consequences of migration within the Municipality of Niksic based on an analysis of population movement and density, the rural and urban populations, and the age structure of the population. Transformations of the economy after 1990 indicate that the neglect of agriculture and the destruction of agricultural land are mistakes that will prove difficult to correct. The results of our research reveal that, today, revitalisation of the countryside is only possible if non-agricultural activities are brought to the area centres and the quality of life is improved in the villages, which would reduce unemployment in the city. A solid traffic infrastructure between individual settlements and their connection with the city is also necessary. Between 2003 and 2011, the agricultural population increased by 1.2%, which gives hope because agriculture is now being recognised as significant, and a movement for changing the inherited negative perception of it is being created. This research is addressed to the state and municipal administrations of the region with the message to implement responsible and timely measures to revitalise the countryside and stop the extinction of the villages.

Decentralization of industry from urban to suburban and rural areas is a notable current trend. One zone where it is particularly marked is the rapidly expanding "Bay Area" around San Francisco, where a number of planned industrial communities are springing up. This is a first general report of a study being made by a staff and graduate student group at Stanford University of the movement of industry into a semi-rural community within that area. A prime purpose of the study, which will continue over a period of years, is to assess the special contributions the behavioral science field of social anthropology can make to research on industrial community development.

Lead concentration of pond sediments near the road, as well as pond sediments far away from roads in a rural area in Sixian County, northern Anhui Province, China, have been analyzed, and the spatial distribution of lead and the index of geo-accumulation have been brought to light. The results indicate that the lead concentrations of pond sediments near the road range from 20 to 34 mg/kg with average= 26.7 mg/kg, whereas pond sediments far away from the road have lower lead concentrations from 20 to 21 mg/kg with average= 20.8 mg/kg. The lead concentration from high to low is Xinji, Gonggou, Dazhuang, Huangwei, Yangzhuang and area far away from the road. A similarity between spatial distributions of lead concentration, index of geo-accumulation (Igeo) and towns (including village and the roads between them) indicates that motor vehicles play important role in controlling the distribution of lead in rural areas.

This article analyzes the rise and evolution of Boko Haram, a Nigerian jihadist organization operating since March 2015 under the banner of Islamic State. The key changes in the ideology, tactics, and goals of Boko Haram have been identified providing in-depth insight into how and why the organization has evolved. The evolution of jihadist activity of Boko Haram included at least two dimensions: firstly – the extreme radicalization of paramilitary struggle manifested in the massacres of civilians in rural areas; and secondly – the feminization of jihadist activity with special regard to the involuntary participation of young women in suicide bombings. The analysis of the facts discussed in the article is based on one of the qualitative scientific methods, namely case study. The main reason to apply this method is the need to investigate the above-mentioned changes in the activity of Islamic terrorists within the time limits indicated in the title of the article.

A new cross-sectional survey of household- associated mongrel dogs as well as follow-up of previously parasitemic individuals was carried out in 1984 toy means of xenodiagnosis and serologic techniques to get a deeper insight into the relationship of T. cruzi parasitemia and age among canine hosts in a rural area of Argentina. Persistence of detectable parasitemia was age-independent, or at most, loosely related to age, confirming the pattern observed in 1982. Similarly no significant age-decreasing effect was recorded among seropositive dogs in: a) the probability of detecting parasites in a 2-year follow-up; b) their intensity of infectiousness (=infective force) for T. infestans 3rd-4th instar nymphs, as measured by the percentage of infected bugs observed in each dog xenodiagnosis. Moreover, not only was the infective force of seropositive dogs for bugs approximately constant through lifetime, but it was significantly higher than the one recorded for children in the present survey, and for human people by other researchers. Therefore, and since T. infestans field populations show high feeding frequencies on dogs, the latter are expected to make the greatest contribution to the pool of infected vectors in the rural household of Argentina. This characteristic should be sufficient to involve canine reservoirs definitely as a risk factor for human people residing in the same house. The increased severity of parasitemia observed among dogs in this survey may be related to the acute undernutrition characteristic of canine populations of poor rural areas in our country, which is expected to affect the ability of the host to manage the infection.

Abstract Background Implementation of the Norwegian government’s Coordination Reform (2012) aims to decentralise health care services from centralised hospitals to the local communities. Radiological services in Norway are mainly organised in hospitals, because of the significant financial and human resource demands engendered by the need for advanced technological equipment, and specialised staff. Some selected conventional x-ray services have been decentralised into rural communities. The purpose of this case study was to evaluate different stakeholders’ perceptions of organizing decentralised radiological services in a rural area in Norway. Methods Following an extensive policy and literature review and a survey of GPs in the rural area being investigated two focus groups were conducted to obtain stakeholder’s evaluation of the radiological services in both hospital and rural contexts. The key emergent themes from the literature - decentralization, quality, professional roles, organisation and economic consequences – were discussed with each focus group. Thematic analysis was used for analyzing the primary data collected. Results Four main themes emerged from the focus groups: organisation, quality, funding of radiological services and cooperation between health care professions and health care levels. The quality of service was found to be inadequate in some areas because of the superficial level of training given to non-radiographic staff. It was found that the organisation of decentralised radiological services to rural areas is challenging because of the way health services are structured in Norway. This structural framework increases the need for effective cooperation and responsibility between health care professions and levels. There needs to be improved co-working by clearly defining roles and responsibilities. Conclusions The stakeholders agreed that decentralized radiological services is important. Quality of the service could be improved and should be given priority. A key recommendation for the organisation of rural radiological service was the development of a satellite link with an acute hospital. Structural change to the financial system whereby money follows patients, might also facilitate more patient-centred services across healthcare levels. Improved mutual understanding between rural radiological services and hospital specialists and managers is important for a high quality and consistent radiological service to be delivered across Norway.
