In this article, Professor Natarajan assesses the value and feasibility of distance education in degree-level and continuing education programmes in engineering and technology. Focusing on its applicability in India, he reviews experiences in other countries, describes the particular problems faced by developing countries, and summarizes the special characteristics which professional engineers need. He then sets out strengths and weaknesses of the single and dual modes of distance education, and considers its compatibility with continuing engineering education. Finally, Professor Natarajan discusses a range of current issues relating to engineering and distance education and looks at recent initiatives.

Abstract The present paper deals with the issue of Electrical Engineering, particularly its impact and standard of education in India from its initiation till present date. We have explored the transition of Electrical Engineering from disciplines of science to a discipline of engineering and technology. A comprehensive study of Electrical Engineering education framework in India at various stages has been done along with a comparison of educational institutes among BRICS nations, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. We have also acknowledged Electrical Engineering as an important domain of engineering and technology. Indian Government’s efforts to improve the quality of Electrical Engineering education in India through internet based interactive online tools and its endeavors to decrease the rising levels of greenhouse emissions for the betterment of our environment has been appreciated in this paper. We have analyzed a plethora of Electrical Computer Aided Design (ECAD) simulation tools, available for the welfare of electrical engineering academia, as well as industry based electrical engineering applications. Electrical Engineers are destined to play a decisive role in the socio-economic future of India and the world, as they have been doing this since the 19th century. Keeping this fact in mind, we have decided to refer to the present employment opportunities available in India covering the private sector as well as the public one. The role of renewable energy in the creation of numerous sustainable jobs for the already huge and exponentially growing youth population of India has a mention in this paper. In conclusion we have formulated some recommendations to educational institutes and Indian Government which will help Electrical Engineering academia-industry flourish in the near future.

Технологии меняют образ жизни и деятельность человека. Глобальная сеть Интернет облегчает быстрый доступ к полезной информации. Социальная, культурная и образовательная конкурентоспособность находятся под влиянием образовательных технологий, которые положительно влияют на стиль, продолжительность и метод обучения в высших учебных заведениях. Дистанционное образование возможно применять и как полноценную самодостаточную форму, и как дополнение к классическому обучению в аудиториях. Автор рассматривает в статье дистанционную форму обучения как альтернативу традиционной форме преподавания в вузах на время периодов самоизоляции (пандемии, сезонные карантины), а также как дополнение к традиционным формам обучения. Анализируются проблемные и положительные аспекты применения данной формы. Указаны возможные форматы обучения в условиях дистанционного образования. Выделены сильные и слабые стороны использования некоторых технологий. Technologies alter the way of living and work of a person. The Internet world network makes it easier to quickly access useful information. Social, cultural and educational competitiveness are influenced by educational technologies that positively influence the style, duration and method of education in higher education institutions. Distance education can be used as a full-fledged self-sufficient form, or as a Supplement to classical training in classrooms. The author considers distance learning as an alternative to the traditional form of teaching in higher education institutions during periods of self-isolation (pandemics, seasonal quarantines), as well as as an addition to traditional forms of education. The problem and positive aspects of using this form are analyzed. Possible formats of training in the conditions of distance education are specified. The strengths and weaknesses of the use of certain technologies are highlighted.

EditorialIn 2018, the Indian film “Starting Line” focused the public’s attention on the issue of education in India. It depicted the length some Indian parents were willing to go to secure educational resources for their children, as well as the difficulties faced by those disadvantaged in society in their fight for equal educational opportunities. In reality, many brilliant young Indian talents have been able to study in Australia through a fund set up by Prof. Chennupati Jagadish, a Distinguished Professor of the Australian National University. Prof. Jagadish is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. In 2018 he was awarded a UNESCO Prize for his contribution to the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology. He holds many positions, and has won numerous awards. What started Prof. Jagadish on his scientific research career? How did he become the respected scientist he is today? What was his intention in setting up the educational fund for students from developing countries? What advice does he have for young researchers? Here are the answers from Prof. Jagadish.

This paper measured the mood of College of Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET) academics following the merger between University of South Africa (UNISA), Vista University Distance Education Campus (VUDEC) and Technikon SA (TSA). The formulated statements, potential human resources related risks with association to the statements were articulated. The results obtained from the survey indicated that had the risk assessment been undertaken in CSET, the risk of losing/ retaining critical skills, corporate memory, and the inability to attract these critical skills to CSET could have been higher on the risk dashboard following the post-merger of UNISA, VUDEC and TSA.

Neste artigo, objetiva-se investigar os conhecimentos revelados por tutores de um curso de formação continuada para professores de Matemática na modalidade a distância. Inicialmente, acompanhou-se o trabalho de 32 tutores ao longo de um ano, a fim de tipificar suas intervenções realizadas em fóruns de discussão junto aos cursistas. A partir dos resultados, em um segundo momento da pesquisa foi oferecida formação específica a um novo grupo de tutores, com o intuito de promover melhoria nas ações consideradas aquém do esperado no primeiro ano. Seis dos novos tutores se voluntariaram para ter seu trabalho acompanhando por um ano, caracterizando-se como os sujeitos desta pesquisa. Sua formação foi fundamental no quadro teórico TPACK e em autores que discutem a importância de componentes afetivo-atitudinais para a formação de professores. A pesquisa, de natureza qualitativa, fez uso da observação do trabalho dos tutores, que foi analisado por meio das tipologias discursivas encontradas nas intervenções realizadas pelos tutores nos fóruns de discussão do curso. As análises indicaram que componentes afetivo-atitudinais têm papel fundamental no exercício da tutoria nesse contexto, sobressaindo-se em relação a outros tipos de conhecimento. Palavras-chave: Tutoria em Educação a Distância; Formação de tutores; Componentes afetivo-atitudinais; TPACK. Affective and Attitudinal Components in the Practice of Tutors in a Distance Learning Course for Mathematics Teachers AbstractThis paper aims to investigate the knowledge revealed by tutors in a continuing education course for mathematics teachers at distance. Initially, it followed up the work of 32 tutors over a year, in order to typify its interventions in discussion forums, with course participants. From the results, in a second phase of research, specific training was offered to a new group of tutors in order to promote improvement in actions considered below expectations in the first year. Six of the new tutors volunteered to have their work following by a year, they are characterized as the subjects of this research. His training was based on TPACK theoretical framework and in authors who discuss the importance of affective and attitudinal components for teacher training. The research, qualitative, made use of the observation of the work of the tutors, which was analyzed by discursive typologies found in interventions by tutors in discussion forums. Analyses indicated that affective and attitudinal components play a key role in the exercise of tutoring in this context, with more emphasis than other types of knowledge. Keywords: Tutoring in Distance Education; Tutor Training; Affective and Attitudinal Components; TPACK.


Engineering is crucial for economic development in developed and developing countries. With various changes taking place globally over the years, it has had influence on all aspect of human endeavor and we are now at a time of pervasive breakout of technologies known as the fourth industrial revolution. This study therefore conceptualizes excellence VS relevance in engineering education in the era of the fourth industrial revolution by first demystifying what the fourth industrial revolution is and then conceptualizing excellence and relevance in engineering education. Findings from the study revealed that Findings from the study revealed that the world is at a stage of massive changes and this requires solutions to these numerous changes. It was also found out that excellence and relevance are not new as it is a common term used across various spheres of human life especially within the university where excellence in research and learning is emphasized. The study recommended that STEM education should be encouraged across board so as to develop the skills necessary in the fourth industrial age and also effort should be made at intensifying action on adopting some of the technologies that are emerging in the fourth industrial revolution especially in the developing countries.
