Antibiotic Residues in Chickens and Farmers’ Knowledge of Their Use in Tay Ninh Province, Vietnam, in 2017

Antibiotic residues in chicken meat samples is a serious public health concern due to their harmful effects on consumers’ health. We conducted this research in 2017 to determine antibiotic residues in chicken meat samples and to describe the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of farmers on the antibiotic uses in poultry farms at Tay Ninh province. Farmers who raised chickens at their farmhouses were surveyed using a KAP survey questionnaire, and 106 chicken meat samples were analyzed for 29 kinds of antibiotic residues. The results showed that 27.4% samples were positive with 11 kinds of 4 antibiotic groups: fluoroquinolones, sulfonamides, tetracycline, and macrolides. A total of 50.9% farmers needed to improve their knowledge on the appropriate use of antibiotics. Although 54.7% famers had positive attitude, just 17% had good practices. It was recommended that the levels of antibiotic residues in chickens should be communicated to food safety and veterinary authorities, chicken farmers, and the general public. Enhancing the training and coaching for each group of farmers to improve their knowledge and practices on the appropriate use of antibiotics in raising chickens is needed. Local government should enhance the level of control and punishment for drug sellers and end users regarding the use of banned antibiotics in chickens.

ABSTRACTObjective: Hypertension (HTN) expends a consequential public health concern on cardiovascular health status and health-care systems in India. Theeffectuation of the pharmaceutical care program in the health care is an extremely important need to achieve the optimum therapeutic effect. Theobjective of the study was to assess the impact of pharmacist intervention on patient’s blood pressure (BP) level, quality of life (QOL), and knowledge,attitude, and practice (KAP) of hypertensive patients.Methods: A randomized controlled pilot study was carried out for 6 months. The hypertensive patients were randomized into control and interventiongroup based on age, and both the groups were interviewed using KAP and WHO QOL-BREF questionnaires, screened BP, respectively, at baseline andeach follow-up after post counseling section to the intervention group. The effect of pharmacist intervention on QOL and KAP among control andintervention was statistically analyzed by paired t-test using SPSS version 16.Results: The total sample studied was 60, of which 20 (33.33%) were males and 40 (66.67%) were females. In our study, the QOL score for eachdomain of both intervention and control groups were almost poor (p˃0.05) at baseline and for the intervention group, a highly significant improvement(p<0.001) was observed for all domains in final follow-up. KAP score of intervention group also showed a significant improvement (p<0.001) frombaseline to final follow-up. In this study, intervention group showed a significant mean reduction of systolic BP from baseline 150.13±25.670 to finalfollow-up 145.33±12.914.Conclusion: The results of the study showed a significant improvement in the patient’s KAP toward different aspects of HTN and QOL followingpharmacist mediated counseling. The presence of antibiotic residue in chicken and animal meats is a serious threat to human health due to its harmful effects. This study aimed at identifying the antibiotic resistance patterns of the isolates as well as antibiotic residues in chicken, cattle, buffalo and goat meats in different southern districts of Bangladesh. A total of 205 meat samples, including 70 chicken meat, 60 cattle meat, 50 buffalo meat and 25 goat meat were aseptically collected and analysed for the detection of antibiotic residues by thin layer chromatography and the isolates obtained from these samples were subjected to antibiogram study against 16 commonly used antibiotics. The isolates found in this study were Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Escherichia coli, and Salmonella spp. and their prevalence were 37.5% (77/205), 22.1% (48/205), 29.7% (61/205), 8.7% (19/205), respectively. The isolates showed different degrees of sensitivity to the antibiotics used in the study. The most resistant phenotype was against cefradine, amoxicillin, penicillin, oxytetracycline, erythromycin, and enrofloxacin. 18.5% (38/205) meat samples were found to be positive for antibiotic residues and the highest prevalence was observed in chicken meat compared to other meat types. Overall, the findings of the study suggest that it is important to take controlling measures for the emergence of antibiotic resistance and also for ensuring healthy meats for human consumption. The utilization of insecticide in a household environment is a necessity especially for those living in the tropical country such as Malaysia. Tropical climate with high humidity and urbanization lead to pests breeding problem hence contributing to the spread of vector diseases such as dengue. Household insecticide such as aerosol sprays, coils and mats are made from a combination of chemicals from type 1 pyrethroid group which are recognized as safe and have minimal toxic effects on human. However, there have been cases of accidental and intentional insecticide poisoning which demonstrates the lack of studies on factors of knowledge, attitude and practice of insecticide usage, the exposure as well as clinical presentation since the symptoms are similar to other compounds which may lead to misdiagnosis. These insecticide chemicals do not only exert toxic effects to pest but to human too due to its highly toxic characteristic which causes diseases such as asthma, cancer, and other diseases following short or long-term exposure to the chemicals. As a result, there is a growing community health concern regarding the uncertainty and risk of insecticide exposure to human. Thus, the risk assessment of community’s knowledge, attitude and practice regarding the insecticide are essential in aiding towards the development of improving insecticide profile, safer insecticide handling and exploration of insecticide alternative. This will result in better insecticide awareness, as well as minimize the insecticide risk exposure and its adverse health effects to the community.

Antibiotic residue in chicken is a human health concern due to its harmful effects on consumer health. This study aims at screening the antibiotic residues from 80 chicken samples collected from farms located in different regions of Lebanon. An optimized multi-class method for identification and quantification of 30 antibiotics from four different chemical classes (sulfonamides, tetracyclines, quinolones, and beta-lactams) has been developed by using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. The evaluation of antibiotics residues in 80 chicken muscles samples has shown that 77.5% of samples were at least contaminated with antibiotics residues, out of which 53.75% were exposed to co-occurrence of multidrug residues. The screening of the four antibiotics families has shown that ciprofloxacin (quinolones) represents the highest occurrence percentage (32.5%), followed by amoxicillin (β-lactams) (22.5%) and then tetracyclines (17.5%). Means of sarafloxacin, amoxicillin, and penicillin G residues levels were above the Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) recommended limit according to the European Union EC. This study revealed that chicken samples collected from Lebanese farms contain antibiotic residues. Guidelines for prudent use of antimicrobials agents for chicken should be adopted to reduce the prevalence of resistant Salmonella in chicken.

Objective. This Study was conducted after a diarrhea outbreak that occurred in Yazd Province, Iran. The aim of the study was to compare knowledge, attitude, practice, and other risk factors of the affected communities regarding diarrhea outbreak (the cities of Zarch, Meybod, and Ardakan) to nonaffected communities (the cities of Yazd and Taft). Methods. A knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) survey study was conducted from August to September 2013 enrolling 505 subjects who were referred to health centers anonymously during the epidemic. The questionnaire included the following four parts: (a) general characteristics such as gender, education level, source of health information obtaining; (b) 12 questions on knowledge (Min = 0, Max = 36); (c) 10 questions on attitude (Min = 0, Max = 50); and (d) nine questions on practice (Min = 0, Max = 27). Results. The overall mean score of knowledge, attitude, and practice was 28.17 (SD = 4.58), 37.07 (SD = 4.39), and 21.31 (SD = 3.81), respectively. Practice on food- and waterborne outbreaks was significantly higher in females (P=0.001) and in nonaffected communities (P=0.031). Conclusions. Nonaffected communities had a considerably better practice score. With the increase in the score of knowledge about food- and waterborne outbreaks, the score of practice increased slightly.

Abstract Background Helminth infections (Intestinal Helminthiasis) have been recognized as an important public health concern, particularly in developing countries. It is however noteworthy that improvement in personal hygiene, sanitation, food handling and food consumption habits could provide effective prevention of transmission of the parasites. The aim of this study was to determine the knowledge, attitude and practice of prevention of helminth infections among first and final professional year students of College of Medicine, University of Lagos and determine the association between the students' levels and their responses. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out among 485 students with 222 students at first professional level and 263 students in the final year, based on the study population. A standardized questionnaire was used to collect data and the data collected were analyzed using Statistical Package of Social Science (SPSS version 22.0). Results Response rate was 93.4% (453 out of 485). Majority of the respondents 329(72.6%) had good knowledge on the prevention of helminth infections, 384(84.7%) of the respondents had positive attitude towards the prevention of helminth infection and most of the respondents 420(92.7%) had good practice of the preventing helminth infections. The final year students however possessed a significant higher knowledge, better attitude and practice of preventing helminth infections than the first year students (p = 0.000, 0.002 and 0.003 respectively), hereby indicating a significant relationship between students' level and their knowledge, attitude and practice of preventing helminth infections. Conclusions The study revealed that the respondents generally had good knowledge, attitude and practices of the prevention of helminth infections and that there is a significant relationship between these and the students' year or level of study Key messages Knowledge, attitude and practice of the students will affect their provision of public health services on prevention of helminth infections among the general populace when they eventually graduate. Years of training affect the knowledge, attitude and practice of undergraduate students of CMUL in prevention of helminth infections.

Background The emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is growing public health concern around the world. When a number of studies have emphasized the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) regarding antibiotic use and resistance in humans, little attention has been paid to the veterinary sector. The aim of this study was to understand the KAP towards antibiotic use and resistance among the veterinarians in Bangladesh. Methods A cross-sectional online based questionnaire survey was conducted from August to September 2020 among the registered veterinary practitioners. A self-administered Google form questionnaire consists of 46 questions on knowledge, attitude and practice regarding antibiotic use and their resistance. Results A total of 208 registered veterinarians participated in this study. 85.1% of the participants were male and 55% of the participants had a Masters degree. Around 50% of the veterinarians were poultry practitioners. All respondents were familiar with antimicrobials. 91.35% of the participants knew that antibiotics can not cure viral infections while 97.6% believed that frequent antibiotic prescription rendered them less effective. Participants claimed that only they are eligible to prescribe drugs for the treatment of animals. Of the total participants, 87.02% believed that a local antimicrobial guideline would be more effective than an international one while around 80% disagreed with adding antibiotics with feed/water as a growth promoter in livestock. However, gaps in practices were highlighted, suggesting training deficiencies. Conclusion The study for the first time conducted in Bangladesh dictates the future interventions like courses, workshops, and seminars on antibiotic usage and resistance are needed to ameliorate the awareness and change the behavior of veterinarians with regards to the rational use of antibiotics while also considering individual motivations and justifications for using antibiotics.

Background: The emergence of SARS-CoV 2 pandemic is the greatest public health concern of the century. Healthcare workers are the front liners of pandemic management. Their knowledge, attitudes and practices can influence the outcome of pandemic. The study aims to determine the knowledge, attitude and practices among healthcare workers.Methods: Knowledge, attitude and practice related questionnaire based online survey through Google forms was conducted from Healthcare workers, following ethical approval from NHRC (ERB protocol registration number: 297/2020 P). Online forms were disseminated via Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, Viber and personal messaging. Responses containing anonymized data was collected analyzed in using SPSS-version 26, (Year: 2019). The results were interpreted in terms of percentage response, knowledge score, and practice and discussed on the possible solutions in improving the infection prevention and control practice.Results: 473 HCWs responded to the questionnaire, out of which 426 responses met inclusion criteria which is 90% of the total responses. The mean score for knowledge was 3.20 + 1.15 out of maximum seven; with 45.7% correct answers. 70.4 % (300) participants felt that Nepal will be unable to contain the pandemic, 64 % of the total employed participants felt that there was inadequate institutional preparedness to protect HCWs from exposure. 91% participants reported practicing hand hygiene after every patient encounter; whereas 31.7% (77) and 22.1% (59) participants did not know how to check sealing of the N95 masks and use personal protective equipment’s respectively.Conclusions: The survey findings showed deficiencies in knowledge and appropriate practice among the HCWs, in prevention of SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Attitudes towards COVID19 were a mix of both positive and negative viewpoints. Even in health care workers with access to internet, there is significant gap in universal infection prevention and control practices required for self-protection and limiting untoward transmission.
