Modeling Learners in Educational Games: Relationship Between Playing and Learning Styles

Background: Video games are very well known for their intrinsic adaptivity; as they adapt the gameplay to the player’s preferences and rhythm. In addition to adapting the gameplay, educational games should also adapt the learning content to match the learner’s competencies, preferences, playing and learning styles. Determining the playing style in an educational game is made possible by collecting certain metrics and information susceptible of monitoring the player’s interactions in the game. However, it is still a challenge to assess the learner’s learning style. Aim: This study examines the correlation between learning and playing styles. It has been acknowledged that both playing and learning styles are related to personality. After examining the personality traits of each style of both Kolb’s learning styles and Bartle’s playing styles, it was hypothesized that there would be a correlation between the two. In that purpose, a quantitative research was conducted to explore the relationship between the two taxonomies. Method: One hundred high school students majoring in science in Morocco have completed Kolb’s learning style inventory (version 3.1) as well as the Bartle test questionnaire developed by Andreasen and Downey. The statistical correlation between the two taxonomies was investigated using cross-tabulation, Chi-square/Fisher’s exact test and Pearson coefficient. Results: Results revealed a relevant interdependency between Kolb’s learning styles and Bartle’s playing styles. The ‘convergent’ type was found to correlate with Bartle’s explorer type; the majority of assimilators adopt the killer type in a game; accomodators tend to be achievers and divergers prefer to be socializers. In terms of learning styles, it was noticed that the majority of participants adopted the converging and the assimilating learning styles; which is in line with what it is indicated in Kolb’s inventory. Results have also shown that learning and playing styles are gender independent. It was concluded that the learning style can be predicted, based on the playing style.

Over the last years there has been a growing interest in the use of educational games as learning tools. Educational games have proven to contribute in enhancing student motivation, increasing their engagement and providing them with personalized and adaptive learning. Learner modeling is a prerequisite when it comes to adaptive learning; it is used to represent student's knowledge, needs, and characteristics. This paper presents a modeling technique based on fuzzy logic that uses gameplay data and expert rules to predict learners preferred learning and playing styles. To test the fuzzy rule-based systems, the educational game Woodland was designed bearing in mind the VARK learning styles and the Bartle playing styles. High school students played the educational game Woodland and the results of the FRBSs were compared with the result of the questionnaires. A great correlation was found between the FRBSs results and the questionnaire results.

The  research aims are (i) Identifying the characteristics of good English teachers in SMAN 3 Sinjai Selatan. (ii) Knowing the characteristics of good English teacher based on the students’ learning style. (iii) Knowing the characteristics of good English teacher based on the students’ personality. This research was done by using a qualitative approach. The data were collected by using two instruments i.e. questionnaires and in depth interview. The results of this study reveal that (i) The characteristics of good English teacher based on the students’ perception in SMAN 3 Sinjai Selatan are categorized into four different categories, namely proficiency, pedagogical (both conceptual and practical), socio-affective and psychological aspect. The last category was the additional category in which age included in and differently from the work of Gi and  Hyo (2006) that only specified three categories, namely proficiency, pedagogical and socio-affective skills. (ii) In general, the characteristics of good English teacher based on the students’ learning style are dominantly in pedagogical aspect. Visual learners want English teacher who can keep the students’ focus and concentration in their learning; auditory learners expect English teacher who can engage the students’ motivation and interest toward learning English; and haptic learners propose the English teacher who concerns on the process rather than the achievement of the students in learning. (iii) The characteristics of good English teacher proposed by high school students based on their personality are dominantly on the teacher’s pedagogical and socio-affective aspects. Only a few ideas of the students that concern on the teacher’s proficiency and psychological aspect.

<p>The aim of this study is to examine whether reading habits have any effects on the academic achievement of the biology course of high school students in Turkey. In the research, the relational screening model was preferred from the quantitative research models and the phenomenological approach was preferred from the qualitative research models, so the mixed method was used. The study group consists of 266 students studying in the final year of various high schools and who took biology courses before in the province of Kars in Turkey. Data were collected by the questionnaire form prepared by the researchers. In the questionnaire, the participants were asked 12 questions in total; 4 questions to determine the variables of the type of school, education fields, gender, school report marks, 5 close-ended questions to be thought to be able to determine their reading habits, 2 open-ended questions and 1 metaphor question. Frequency and percentage values were calculated for descriptive analysis of the answers given to the questionnaire items. Chi-square analysis was used to examine the relationship between demographic characteristics and the reading habits of the students, and the content analysis technique was used to analyze metaphors. </p><p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/edu_01/0882/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>

The purpose of this study was to describe the creative thinking profile of grade VIII junior high school students in terms of learning styles in solving quadrilateral problems. This research is a descriptive study using a qualitative approach. The subjects of this research were students VIII A at SMPN 1 Genteng, namely two students from each different type of learning style. Collecting data using questionnaires, test methods, and interview methods. Students' creative thinking is categorized into four indicators, namely fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. The results showed that students in visual learning styles could fulfill all indicators of creative thinking, namely fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. Auditory learning style students can fulfill three indicators of creative thinking, namely fluency, originality, and elaboration.

This study, conducted over 2 years (2019–2020), aimed to highlight how teachers’ communication style influences the learning style of high school students. We used research methods of the S.C. Questionnaire (communication analysis), a questionnaire to identify students’ learning styles, and guidance interview structured on 10 items. Both questionnaires were administered according to GDPR rules. We also used IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 25 for statistical data processing. The outcomes of this research are as follows: (a) it allows a better understanding of the teaching–learning process in high school students; (b) it highlights how the teacher’s communication style influences the learning style of high school students, in both face-to-face teaching activities and online teaching–learning activities; and (c) it highlights the methods that facilitate the analysed phenomenon.   Keywords: Teachers’ communication, style, student’s learning style, Influence, High school

This research was conducted to determine the relationship of Science teachers’ teaching styles and the students’ learning styles and academic performance. The study was conducted among the public secondary school in Subic, Zambales during the academic year 2018 – 2019. The descriptive survey research design was used where the teaching styles of eighty-five teachers and six hundred high school students. Data were analyzed using the percentage, mean and chi square test. The findings of the study revealed that the science teachers are adults with the most of them are female. The students are teenagers mostly male in Grade 8. The teaching styles of the science teachers is of a formal authority and the learning styles of the students is generally visual. The academic performance in science is satisfactory. The teaching styles of the teachers was dependent on education, field of specialization, length of service. The learning styles of the students were not dependent significantly on their age and year level. The learning styles of the students were significantly dependent on teaching styles of their science teachers and the academic performance of the students significantly dependent on the teaching styles of the science teachers. The academic performance of students are significantly dependent on their learning styles. With these findings and conclusions follow up studies exploring other factors affecting the performance level of the students in Science is recommended as well as the effectiveness of the various teaching styles and learning styles to promote learning and better understanding in the subject must be conducted.

AbstractLearning style is a crucial element in the academic life of students. It plays a fundamental role in the selection of a suitable teaching method of instruction. The aim of this research paper is the study of the perception of the hybrid learning and students’ learning style. In addition, another objective of the study is to analyze the perception of the hybrid learning in accordance with the learning style. This paper employs quantitative research and the descriptive and comparative methods. The study sample consists of 89 Albanian university students. Data analysis was conducted through SPSS 20 and JASP-0.8.1.2. The statistical analyses utilized in this paper are distribution tables, crossed tabulation, student test, Pearson correlation coefficient, Bayesian Independent Samples T-Test, and One - Way ANOVA. The conclusion of the data analysis shows that most students used the visual learning style in order to study. Students have a positive perception of the hybrid learning. There exists an insignificant statistical correlation between learning styles and the perception of the hybrid learning. The area of study has an impact on the components of the hybrid learning.

Research on profiles of mathematical problem solving ability in junior high school students on the opportunities material in terms of learning styles aimed to obtain a description of the mathematical problem solving skills based learning styles of students, that learning styles were visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. This type of research was a qualitative descriptive. The subject of research were nine students, each type of learning style consisted of 3 students. The results showed that mathematical problem solving ability of students with the type of visual learning style was superior than the students with the type of auditory and kinesthetic.

The aim of this study is to investigate high school students&rsquo; geometry course achievement according to their learning styles. 11th grade students in İzmir constitute the general universe of the research and the sampling of the research comprises of 11th grade students in Karabağlar district. Sampling of the research consists of total 50 high school students, determined by using appropriate sampling method. 60% (n=30) of these students are female and 40% (n=20) of them are males. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used depending on the main and sub-questions of the research. Kolb&rsquo;s Learning Style Inventory was used in order to determine the learning styles of the students. As a result of the research, it was found out that most of the students who have diverging learning style were female students (77.8%), most of the students who have accommodating learning style were female students (75%), the number of male students (47.4%) and the number of female students (52.6%) who have assimilating learning styles are close and it was found out that, among the students who have converging learning style, female students (55.6%) were more than males. It was determined that there was no statistically significant difference between the geometry achievement scores according to learning styles and that the students&#39; geometric achievement means were statistically significant according to gender. It was proposed that taking learning styles into account in the regulation of education environments can help to increase achievement.

study aims to describe the creativity skills of Junior High School students in solving cube and cuboid problems based on student learning styles. The research instruments used were creativity skills tests, a learning style questionnaire, and interviews. As many as three seventh graders who have different learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic, working on a cuboid/cube problem. Their performances on such a problem were then assessed regarding fluency, flexibility, and novelty. The results showed that the visual learner produced two different solutions with two different methods/strategies and completed his solution by providing a lot of illustrations/representations although they could not be categorized as novelty solutions. Meanwhile, the auditory learner provided two different solutions with two different methods/strategies. More particularly, he determined the appropriate size and found a suitable size by using a three-variable linear equation for the cube and cuboid problem although he produced some mistakes and uncompleted on the work procedures. Lastly, the kinesthetic learner provided two different solutions with one method/strategy, such as by directly determining the various correct sizes for the problem-solution although the answers could not be categorized novelty for creativity skill. Further studies are suggested to involve more participants to get a wider insight on the students’ creativity for different learning styles.
