Development and Validation of the Cultural Competence of Program Evaluators (CCPE) Self-Report Scale

No self-report measure of cultural competence currently exists in program evaluation. Adapting items from cultural competence measures in fields such as counseling and nursing, the researchers developed the Cultural Competence of Program Evaluators (CCPE) self-report scale. The goals of this study were to validate the CCPE and to assess differences in level of cultural competence among program evaluators based on various demographic variables. The sample consisted of 174 evaluators. Principal components analyses revealed three factors of the CCPE: cultural knowledge, cultural skills, and cultural awareness. The overall alpha of the CCPE was .88, and convergent validity was established via significant positive correlations between the CCPE and the Multicultural Counseling Inventory (MCI). Additionally, individuals who had received cultural competence training scored significantly higher on the CCPE, and receipt of cultural competence training was a significant predictor of scores on the CCPE.

Purpose: With Korea’s recent rapid change into a multicultural society, cultural competence is being emphasized as a core nursing competency. This study investigated the effects of a cultural nursing course that aimed to enhance the cultural competence of nursing students in Korea.Methods: This was a single-group pre- and post-comparison study. The subjects were 69 nursing students at Dongyang University who attended a cultural nursing course in 2015, of whom 62 students responded to the survey. The 13-week cultural nursing course was held for 2 hours a week. The methods of the course included small group activities, discussions and presentations, experiential learning, reflective activities, and lectures. Nursing students’ cultural competence was measured pre- and post-course with the Cultural Competence Scale for Korean Nurses, which contains 33 items scored on a 7-point Likert scale.Results: After completing the cultural nursing course, students’ total cultural competence scores increased, as did their scores in each category (cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural sensitivity, and cultural skills) (P<0.001). There was no significant difference in cultural competence by gender (P<0.001).Conclusion: This cultural nursing course was found to be effective in enhancing the cultural competence of nursing students. Therefore, the educational program developed in this study can be extended to other university-level nursing programs in Korea.

ObjectiveTo develop a short self-report instrument for the assessment of expectations (Expectation for Treatment Scale(ETS)) using acupuncture as a case example.DesignA cross-sectional assessment with retest after 1 week.SettingA web-based survey with patients suffering from pain.MethodsIn a three-step approach, we reduced the initially collected number of items from 17 to 9 and to 5, including expectations about coping ability, vitality, physical health and reduction of patient complaints. Items were selected according to internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha); convergent and divergent validities with related constructs (optimism, pessimism, resilience, perceived sensitivity to medicines, depression and others); 1-week retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC)); and exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).ResultsA total of 102 patients suffering from pain were included, and 54 of these patients completed the retest assessment. The final version of the ETS consisted of five items and had an excellent Cronbach’s alpha (0.90), with 72.33% variance on one single factor. Depression, pessimism and perceived sensitivity to medicines showed positive correlations with our expectation measure (r=0.23, r=0.20 and r=0.34, respectively); the correlation between the ETS and optimism was low (r=−0.07) and no correlation between the ETS and resilience was found (r=−0.07). Convergent validity was confirmed with a high correlation (r>0.90) between ETS and a treatment-specific measure of expectations. The retest ICC was 0.86, which showed high stability over 1 week. A CFA (n=439) with data from patients with low back pain confirmed the single-factor structure of the instrument.ConclusionThe ETS showed strong psychometric properties and covered a distinct construct. As the next step, the ETS might be implemented in different clinical conditions and settings to investigate psychometrics and its predictive power for treatment outcomes.

Background: Nurses as one of the health professionals who are expecting to have competence in providing nursing care to patients based on cultural background.Purpose: To describe the cultural competency and nursing care among sundanese nurses' ethnic group in Indonesia..Method: A descriptive design with a quantitative approach. The sampling technique in this study used Cluster Random Sampling with the sample of 63 respondents. The instrument used the NCCS (Nurse Cultural Competence Scale). This research conducted on April 2019 at dr. Slamet Hospital, Garut - IndonesiaResults: Shows that the nurses' cultural competencies in dr. Slamet hospital was in a low category of 37 respondents (58.7%). While in a component, cultural awareness was in the low category (60.3%), the cultural knowledge component was in the high category (52.4%), the cultural sensitivity component was in the low category (58.7%) and the cultural skills component in the high category (58.7%).Conclusion: The most nurses' cultural competencies  was in a low category such as cultural awareness was in the low category (60.3%), the cultural sensitivity component was in the low category. Sundanese nurses' ethnic group need to develop training in culturally competent as a local wisdom.

This study was conducted to understand how students’ cultural awareness, knowledge, sensitivity, and communication abilities combine to influence their development of cultural competence. Q methodology (Q) was used to capture the subjectivity and lived experiences of participants of an international experience (IE) and assess the impact of the program on their cultural competence development. When viewed through the lens of the Personal Cultural Competence Enhancement Framework (PCCEF), findings suggested students’ cultural competence development could be interpreted through three typologies: (a) Cultural Learners, (b) Cultural Engagers, and (c) Cultural Samplers. Cultural Leaner students demonstrated new awareness of their limited amounts of cultural knowledge and desired to learn more about other cultures through future travel, but were still apprehensive about engaging and communicating with people from other cultures. Cultural Engagers, on the other hand, expressed greater confidence in stepping out of their comfort zones and communicating in a different language. Lastly, Cultural Samplers demonstrated increased awareness of the benefits of experiencing other cultures and they comforts they have back home, and they expressed a desire to continue traveling abroad in the future. These findings support the use of short-term IE programs as supplemental activities to foster agricultural students’ progression toward cultural competence.

This article describes the development of a measure of interventionists' competence in implementing culturally responsive multitiered systems of support (MTSS) practices. We ran an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) on a 30-question survey that measured the multicultural competence of 651 school counselors and psychologists in MTSS implementation. The EFA indicated a five-factor structure of the Interventionist MTSS Multicultural Competence Scale (IMMCS): (a) Cultural Knowledge, (b) Cultural Awareness, (c) Cultural Skills, (d) Cultural Appreciation, and (e) Respect for Cultural Differences.

Introduction Saudi Arabia’s culturally diverse population is growing rapidly. The need for cultural competence is greatest in pediatric units where nurses provide care to children in collaboration with their parents. Method Nonprobability sampling of 394 nurses and cross-sectional descriptive design was used to investigate nurses’ cultural competence, and to examine the relationships between the variables and participants’ demographic data in pediatric units across five hospitals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, by asking nurses to complete a self-report questionnaire. Results The results suggest a high degree of cultural competency. Participants’ scores indicated high levels of perceived cultural awareness, sensitivity, and cultural competence behavior for performance. Discussion This study supports the 3-D Puzzle Model of culturally congruent care for cultural competence, which assumes that cultural competence is deeply influenced by one’s experiences. The findings revealed a high level of cultural competence despite a lack of information with respect to patient views.

Background:  The healthcare workforce of Saudi Arabia is characterized by diverse cultural backgrounds as a consequence of employment of expatriate workers from various countries. The heterogeneity of both providers of health services and clients resulted to cultural barriers that affected the delivery care.  It is paramount to evaluate the cultural competence of the healthcare providers (HCPs) to maintain quality holistic care. Objective: The primary objective of this study was to assess the cultural diversity experience, cultural competence behavior (CCB) and cultural awareness and sensitivity (CAS) of HCPs in a hospital setting of Saudi Arabia. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving survey of HCPs from medical, nursing and laboratory technology disciplines using the Cultural Competence Assessment (CCA) tool.  Results: There were a total of 104 HCPs who completed the survey. The characteristics of the respondents resulted to a mean age of 38.7 ±10.4 who were predominantly Asians and nurses. The majority had working experience of 10 years and below, with more than half who had prior diversity trainings. Reported cultural diversity experience included all HCPs caring for Arab Middle Easterners and Asians and encountering at least one or more special population groups. There was an overall high cultural competence (5.28 ±0.46), high CCB (5.84 ±0.56) but only moderately high CAS (4.72 ±0.35). Significant differences were only identified between CCB scores and three demographic variables (racial/ethnic identification, area of discipline and years of experience). No significant result was found between CAS scores and demographic variables as well as between CCB and CAS scores.     Conclusions: In spite of high CCB, the HCPs responded with lower CAS scores. Interventions should be initiated to increase CAS such as cultural diversity training and availability of cultural care resources.

A 15-item self-report Situational Social Avoidance scale was developed and validated. Two samples of university students (total N = 407) provided data, evidencing high internal consistency (α=.89 for Sample 1, α = .92 for Sample 2) and test-retest reliability of .86 ( n = 65) over a 6.5-wk. interval. A factor-analysis yielded an interpretable 3-factor solution with three domains of social avoidance, (a) social performance, (b) socializing, and (c) self-assertion. Sample 2 showed a significant sex difference, with 138 women scoring higher, especially in the self-assertion and social performance domains. The scale had high positive correlations (from .60 to .78) with four frequently used social anxiety scales, and meaningful correlations with depression ( r = .36), self-esteem ( r = −.49), and self-critical cognition ( r = .50). Differential correlations were found between the scale's three factor-based subscales and the other social anxiety scales, suggesting different situational properties of the latter scales. Research implications and clinical use of the scale are discussed.

This study is a descriptive qualitative research. This research aim to analyze and express cultural competence among early childhood teachers in Sidoarjo. Data collection was done by observation, interview and documentation. The subjects in this study were early childhood teachers in Sidoarjo from both homogeneous and heterogeneous schools. This study resulted the findings that educators can be competent in culturally diverse classroom teaching, he must have a cultural component of cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural attitudes and cultural skills. Cultural awareness and cultural attitudes can be developed through cultural experience or cross-cultural interaction. While cultural knowledge can be developed through training such as workshops, seminars, conferences etc. And cultural teaching skills can be developed through teaching experience.

Suicide-specific rumination, a repetitive mental fixation on one’s suicidal thoughts and intentions, may influence the transition from suicidal thoughts to behaviors. Research on suicide-specific rumination has been hindered by the lack of an independent measurement tool. This article presents the development and validation of a self-report measure of suicide-specific rumination across several samples with lifetime suicidal ideation (Sample 1: N = 494 students; Sample 2: N = 219 community members; Sample 3: N = 128 adults at high risk for suicide). The Suicide Rumination Scale (SRS) item pool was reduced from a pool of 41 items to 8 items that are highly discriminant and of varying levels of difficulty. The SRS demonstrated measurement invariance, convergent validity, and nonredundancy with related measures. Importantly, the SRS differentiated suicide attempters from ideators, suggesting its potential clinical relevance. Overall, these findings suggest that the SRS is a valid and incrementally useful measure of suicide-specific rumination.
