To improve the stiffness of the orifice-type aerostatic bearing, a new construction of orifice restrictor with multiple orifices in series was proposed to enhance the restriction effect. The restriction effects of the restrictors with multiple orifices in series were studied numerically. Based on a circular aerostatic thrust bearing with a central feedhole, the effect of the bearing stiffness improved by the restrictors with multiple orifices in series was studied. The results show that the aerostatic bearing with the restrictors with multiple sub-orifices in series shows higher maximal bearing stiffness than the bearing with traditional simple orifice restrictor. For example, the maximal stiffness for aerostatic bearing with the restrictor of four sub-orifices in series is 57 N/µm, which is ∼11% larger than that of the bearing with simple orifice. With this construction, the restriction effect of the orifice restrictor can be enhanced by increasing the number of the sub-orifices, instead of decreasing the aperture of the orifice. This approach avoids the difficulty of manufacturing the orifice restrictor with too small aperture for achieving a high restriction effect. The feasibility of the restrictor with multiple sub-orifices in series proposed in this paper was verified with experimental studies.

Aiming at the problem of low stiffness of aerostatic bearing, according to the principle of gas-solid coupling, this paper designs a kind of aerostatic thrust bearing with elastic equalizing pressure groove (EEPG) and investigates the effect of elastic equalizing pressure groove (EEPG) on the stiffness of aerostatic bearing. According to the physical model of the bearing, one deduces the deformation control equation of the elastic equalizing pressure groove and the control equation of gas lubrication, using finite difference method to derive the control equations and coupling calculation. The bearing capacity and stiffness of aerostatic bearing with EEPG in different gas film clearance are obtained. The calculation results show that the stiffness increased by 59%. The results of numerical calculation and experimental results have good consistency, proving the gas-solid coupling method can improve the bearing stiffness.

Foil bearing is considered to be a promising supporting technology in high-speed centrifugal machinery. Due to the high-speed shearing effect in the viscous lubricant film, heat generation could not be ignored. In this paper, a thermo-elastic model of the multi-leaf foil thrust bearing is proposed to predict its thermal and static characteristics. In the model, modified Reynolds equation, energy equation, and Kirchhoff equation are solved in a coupling way. The contact area between the foil and welding plate is taken into account. Besides, the effect of cooling air on the bearing temperature is investigated. The ultimate load capacity and transient overload failure process of the bearing is analyzed and discussed. The effect of rotation speed on the bearing temperature is more obvious than that of the bearing load. The bearing temperature drops obviously by introducing the cooling air, and the cooling effect is improved with the supply pressure. The transient overload failure of the bearing occurs when the bearing load exceeds the ultimate value.

The characteristic of gas film is a key factor in the performance of the aerostatic bearing. Because the gas film flow is in the slip regime, influence of the rarefied effect is significant. The modified Reynolds equation suitable for compressible gas in the rarefied effect is deduced through introducing the flow factor in the rarefied effect to the Reynolds equation. Pressure distribution, capacity, and stiffness of the gas film under the rarefied effect are analyzed. With the increase of gas pressure, the gas film capacity and stiffness of bearing would also increase. However, the greater the gas supply pressure, the more intense the gas film vibration, so it was important to select a reasonable gas supply pressure for achieving the optimal gas film characteristic. Finally, the gas rarefied effect is verified by the experiment indirectly, which agreed well with the analytical results and provided a theoretical guidance for the machining accuracy of the machine tool.

This paper proposes a new type of a self-controlled restrictor which can achieve a very high bearing stiffness in hydrostatic bearings. This self-controlled restrictor employs a floating disk to control the mass flow rate of the oil entering the bearing clearance according to changes of the applied load. Furthermore, a hydrostatic bearing with this restrictor can theoretically achieve an infinite stiffness when the mass of a floating disk is assumed to be zero. The static characteristics of a rectangular hydrostatic thrust bearing with this self-controlled restrictor are theoretically and experimentally investigated. It was consequently shown that the proposed hydrostatic thrust bearing can achieve a very high stiffness (nearly infinite stiffness) in a very wide range of applied load independent of supply pressure.

Recently, graphite porous material has been used successfully in an aerostatic bearing. In actual bearing design, it is often necessary to reduce the thickness of porous material to make the bearing smaller. However, a reduction in thickness results in a reduction in the strength of the porous material. In particular, when the diameter of porous material is large, it is difficult to supply the air through the full pad area of porous material because it deforms. Therefore, in this paper, two types of air supply method (the annular groove supply and the hole supply) in a circular aerostatic porous thrust bearing are proposed to avoid the deflection of the bearing surface. The static and dynamic characteristics of aerostatic porous bearing with these air supply methods are investigated theoretically and experimentally. In addition, the effects of a surface restricted layer on the characteristics are clarified.

The dynamics of a booster station, which is critical for the control of a novel, long distance, hydraulic capsule pipeline, is simulated mathematically for design studies and control of the hydraulic transients caused by the valve actuators in the system. Several modifications to the pump bypass station configuration of the booster station have been studied. With the objective of eliminating column separation and reducing flow reversals, a configuration with several centrifugal pumps connected in series, and a carefully sized air chamber is found to be a viable design. A valve control method is designed to eliminate column separation and the design results in acceptable flow reversal levels in the main pipe. The simulation results match with trends in limited experimental studies performed on a small scale experimental capsule pipeline system.

An analysis is conducted and solutions are provided for the dynamic performance of high speed hybrid thrust bearing. By adopting bulk flow theory, the turbulent Reynolds equation is solved numerically with the different orifice diameter and supply pressure. The results show that increasing supply pressure can significantly improve the bearing stiffness and damping, while the orifice diameters make a different effect on the bearing stiffness and damping.
