A compact multi-layered structure is proposed based on the coiled-up space concept for power transformer noise absorption at 100 and 200 Hz. Current methods of constructing multi-band absorbers are impractical for power transformer noise control due to the high coupling effect deteriorating their performance. To overcome this shortcoming, the proposed structure is composed of multiple connected layers creating two separate coiled ducts with adjustable dimensions to minimise the coupling effect. In the modelling stage, the geometrical features are optimised using the genetic algorithm to maximise the absorption coefficient and minimise the thickness. The proposed dual-tone absorber has a thickness of 43.5 mm which is significantly thinner than the existing conventional absorbers. The measurement results on a 3D-printed structure demonstrate the feasibility of the design.

In recent decades, the genetic algorithm (GA) has been extensively used in the design optimization of electromagnetic devices. Despite the great merits possessed by the GA, its processing procedure is highly time-consuming. On the contrary, the widely applied Taguchi optimization method is faster with comparable effectiveness in certain optimization problems. This study explores the abilities of both methods within the optimization of a permanent magnet coupling, where the optimization objectives are the minimization of coupling volume and maximization of transmitted torque. The optimal geometry of the coupling and the obtained characteristics achieved by both methods are nearly identical. The magnetic torque density is enhanced by more than 20%, while the volume is reduced by 17%. Yet, the Taguchi method is found to be more time-efficient and effective within the considered optimization problem. Thanks to the additive manufacturing techniques, the initial design and the sophisticated geometry of the Taguchi optimal designs are precisely fabricated. The performances of the coupling designs are validated using an experimental setup.

In the first part of the article, based on the results of theoretical studies performed for a simplified transformer winding equivalent scheme, it was shown that the damping factors can be estimated from the width of the resonant peaks of the frequency responses of the module and the reactive component of the voltage at the midpoint of the equivalent scheme, as well as the active component of the input admittance and neutral current of the considered resonant scheme. In this part of the article, the practical possibility of applying the obtained theoretical relations between the damping factors and the width of resonant peaks in relation to the frequency responses of power transformer windings is considered. The results of calculations of the damping factors at the two power transformers made by using the fitting of the free component of transient voltage and by determining the width of the resonance peaks of the active component of winding neutral current and the voltage transfer function, corresponding to intermediate points of the winding. It is shown that the evaluation of the values of the winding damping factors can be performed as a byproduct of transformer condition assessment by frequency response analysis (FRA).

We present the possibilities of 3D direct-write dispensing in the fabrication of passive UHF RFID graphene tags on a textile substrate. In our method, the graphene tag antenna is deposited directly on top of the IC strap, in order to simplify the manufacturing process by removing one step, that is, the IC attachment with conductive glue. Our wireless measurement results confirm that graphene RFID tags with printed antenna-IC interconnections achieve peak read ranges of 5.2 meters, which makes them comparable to graphene tags with epoxy-glued ICs. After keeping the tags in high humidity, the read ranges of the tags with epoxy-glued and printed antenna-IC interconnections decrease 0.8 meters and 0.5 meters, respectively. However, after drying, the performance of both types of tags returns back to normal.

The absorption coefficients in a reverberation room are most representative measure for evaluating absorption performance of architectural materials. However, it is well known that measurement results of the coefficient vary according to a room shape of the measurement and area of the specimen. Numerical analyses based on wave acoustics are effective tools to investigate these factors on absorption coefficient measurement in reverberation room. In this study, sound fields for the measurement of absorption coefficient in reverberation room are analyzed by time domain finite element method (TDFEM). This study shows effectiveness of the analysis for investigation on causes of variation in the measurement results and improvement methods of the measurement. First, some measurement sound fields for absorption coefficient in reverberation rooms the walls of which are incline or decline are analyzed by the TDFEM. Next, reverberation times in each sound fields are calculated from the results obtained by TDFEM and the absorption coefficients are evaluated from the reverberation time of the room with and without specimen. Finally, the relationships among room shape, degree of inclination of the wall, the sound absorption coefficient of the specimen, frequencies and the measurement absorption coefficient are investigated.

A novel hybrid water antenna with tunable frequency and beamwidth is proposed. An L-shaped metallic strip is adopted as the feeding structure of the antenna in order to effectively broaden the operating bandwidth. The L-shaped strip feeder and a rectangular water dielectric resonator constitute the driven element. Five identical rectangular water dielectric elements are mounted linearly with respect to the driven element, which act as the directors and contribute to narrow the beamwidth. By varying the height of the liquid water level in the driven element, the proposed antenna is able to tune to different operational frequencies. Furthermore, it is also able to adjust to different beamwidths and gains via varying the number of director elements. A prototype is fabricated by using 3-D printing technology, where the main parts of the antenna are printed with photopolymer resin, and then the ground plane and L-shaped strip feeder are realized by using adhesive copper tapes. Measurement results agree well the simulation ones. A tunable frequency ranging from 4.66 GHz to 5.65 GHz is obtained and a beam steering along a fixed direction with a gain variation less than 0.5 dB is realized.

As we know, the TF method is more sensitive to changes in the power transformers at higher frequencies. Although measurement based on low voltage impulse (LVI) is definitely faster than that based on swept frequency method (SFM), the available frequency band is narrow because of the typical microsecond impulse. In this paper, the characteristics of the nanosecond impulse in the frequency domain were investigated. A test System based on Nanosecond low voltage impulse was developed. The proposed method was applied to a 10kV/100kVA distribution transformer in the laboratory. Measurement results with two different impulses were compared.
