What types of fears does immigration trigger in individuals and how do these fears differ across partisan lines? Prior research explores this question indirectly by linking immigration attitudes to respondents’ demographics or to different threat frames. This research note offers a more direct test by designing a randomized experiment on a nationally representative sample of US citizens. I provide one half of the respondents with neutral information about immigration, while the other half serves as the control group. I find that respondents for whom the immigration issue is made salient (i.e. the treatment group) are more fearful of both their personal as well as national economic situation and about crime in their community than respondents in the control group. I further find that the overall effects are mainly driven by those respondents who self-identify as Republicans.

Most researchers have found increases of lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] in uremic patients, as well as in those undergo ng hemodialysis (HD) or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). The mechanisms for this increase remain unclear. We studied 71 patients undergoing CAPD, 48 me n and 23 women. According to the time spent on CAPD, the patients were divided into three groups: group 0: 29 patients at the starting off point of dialysis treatment; group I: 22 patients with an average stay of 15.2 months; group II: 20 patients with an average stay of 69.3 months on CAPD. We have only observed significant increases of Lp(a) levels in those patients initiating the dialysis, but no significant differences are found in the other groups undergoing CAPD for longer periods when compared to the control group. We found no significant relation between Lp(a) levels and peritoneal protein loss, and not with absorption of glucose from the dialysate either. We have found a positive and significant correlation between Lp(a) levels and urinary protein loss (r = 0.41; p < 0.001). It is possible that an element associated with proteinuria might have an effect on the metabolism of Lp(a) in CAPD patients.

Abstract Background Self-rated health (SRH) is one of the most commonly used summary measures of overall health and well-being available to population scientists due to its ease of administration in large-scale surveys and to its efficacy in predicting mortality. This paper assesses the extent to which SRH is affected by its placement before or after questions about bodyweight on a survey, and whether differences in placement on the questionnaire affects SRH’s predictive validity. Methods I assessed the validity of SRH in predicting the risk of mortality by comparing outcomes of sample members who were asked to rate their health before reporting on their bodyweight (the control group) and sample members who were asked to rate their health after reporting on their bodyweight (the treatment group). Both the control and treatment group were randomly assigned via an experiment administered as a module in a nationally representative sample of adults in the USA in 2019 (N = 2523). Results The odds of reporting a more favorable appraisal of health are 30% lower for sample members who were in the treatment group when compared with the control group. Additionally, the SRH of treatment group members is significantly associated with their risk of mortality, while the SRH of control group members is not. Conclusion The findings from this study suggest that for researchers to maximize the utility of SRH, closer attention needs to be paid to the context of the survey within which it asked. SRH is highly sensitive to the questions that precede it, and this sensitivity may in turn mischaracterize the true health of the population that the survey is intending to measure.

  The niacin in energy drinks has metabolic product that cause oxidative stress and liver damage, while the liver damage can be prevented by hepatoprotective agents. Scoparone in Artemisia vulgaris L. can act as a hepatoprotector by its antioxidant effect. This study aimed to investigate the effectivity of Artemisia vulgaris L. extract as a hepatoprotector in wistar hepatocytes induced by niacin. This study used 25 male rats which were divided into 5 groups: normal, the negative control, the positive control, the treatment group I, and II. Treatment was conducted for 28 days. The samples were terminated and the hepatocyte were prepared for histological examination. Histological appearance was catagorized as mild, moderate, and severe damage with or without inflamatory cells activity. The data analysis by Kruskal Wallis showed significant difference (p<0,001). Further analysis by Mann Whitney revealed significantly difference (p<0,05) between normal group and all groups, negative control group and positive control group, and positive control group and treatment group I, but not significantly difference between negative control group and treatment group I, negative control group and treatment group II, positive control group and treatment group II, and between treatment groups. The study concluded that the effectivity of Artemisia vulgaris L. extract has not been proven as a hepatoprotector but further study is needed to draw a definite conclusion.   Keywords: energy drink, niacin, Artemisia vulgaris L., hepatoprotector

PURPOSE: To determine the effects of green propolis extracted in L-lysine (WSDP) and of L- lysine for 40 weeks on induced rat bladder carcinogenesis. METHODS: The animals (groups I, II, III, IV, V and VI) received BBN during 14 weeks. Group I was treated with propolis 30 days prior received BBN, and then these animals were treated daily with propolis; Groups II and III was treated with subcutaneous and oral propolis (respectively) concurrently with BBN. The animals of Group IV were treated L-lysine; Group V received water subcutaneous; and Group VI received only to BBN. Among the animals not submitted to carcinogenesis induction, Group VII received propolis, Group VIII received L-lysine and Group IX received water. RESULTS: The carcinoma incidence in Group I was lower than that of control (Group VI). The carcinoma multiplicity in Group IV was greater than in Group VI. All animals treated with L-lysine developed carcinomas, and they were also more invasive in Group IV than in controls. On the other hand, Group VIII showed no bladder lesions. CONCLUSION: The WSDP is chemopreventive against rat bladder carcinogenesis, if administered 30 days prior to BBN , and that L-lysine causes promotion of bladder carcinogenesis.

Abstract The objective of this paper is to re-evaluate the effect of the 1985 “Employment Services for Ex-Offenders” (ESEO) program on recidivism in San Diego, Chicago and Boston. The initial group of program participants was split randomly in a control group and a treatment group. The actual treatment (mainly being job related counseling) only takes place conditional on finding a job and not having been arrested for those selected in the treatment group. We use interval-censored proportional hazard models for job search and recidivism time, where the latter model incorporates the conditional treatment effect, depending on covariates. We find that the effect of the program depends on location and age. The ESEO program reduces the risk of recidivism only for ex-inmates over the age of 27 in San Diego and Chicago and over the age of 36 in Boston, but increases the risk of recidivism for the other ex-inmates in the treatment group.

Incidence of drug overdose during treatment of acute disease consequently leads to serious renal damage. As supporting treatment, administration of herbal medicine and food dietary are frequently developed. This research aimed to prove how the administration of avocado juice could lower the BUN and creatinine level in white rats induced with toxic doses of meloxicam. Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drug (NSAID), which is effectively used as an anti-inflamatory, analgesic, and antipyretic. Twenty four (24) male Wistar rats were assigned to 4 groups of six rats each (n=6). 1 ml of CMC 1% was administered to Control Group I, 30 mg/kgBB meloxicam and 1 ml of CMC 1% to Control Grup II, 30 mg/kgBB meloxicam and avocado juice 5 g/kgBB/day to Treatment Group I, and 30 mg/kgBB meloxicam and avocado juice 10 g/kgBB/day to Treatment Group II. The study was conducted over 8 days, then the level of Blood Urea Nitrogen and creatinine of the white rats were examined on the 1st and 8th day. The results were analyzed by Anova Two Way With Replication, then followed by T-test (α = 0,05) if there were difference. The Anova Two Way With Replication test showed that the mean of the four groups either the levels of Blood Urea Nitrogen or creatinine was significantly decreased (p<0,05). The decrease of BUN in the treatment group I was 27,17 27,17mg/dl and 17,83mg/dl while the decrease of creatinine level was 0,983mg/dl and 0,713mg/dl. The conclusion of this study was that avocado juice decreases level of Blood Urea Nitrogen and creatinine in white rats which exposed toxic doses of meloxicam.

Objective: To evaluate the chondroprotective effects of hyaluronic acid in a rat model of osteoarthritis. Study Design: Laboratory based experimental study. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Pharmacology, Army Medical College, Rawalpindi, in alliance with National Institute of health, Islamabad and Department of Pathology, Army Medical College Rawalpindi, from Apr to Jun 2019. Methodology: Sixteen (16) rats of Sprague Dawley breed were procured in this study. Osteoarthritis was induced in right knee joint of rats by surgical resection of medial meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament. They were allocated into two (02) groups with eight (08) rats in both groups. Group-I was control group that was treated with 0.2 ml intra articular saline once weekly for four weeks. While group-II was treatment group that was intra particularly administered with 0.2ml hyaluronic acid once weekly for four weeks. One week after the last dosage, gait pattern of the animals was scored. Then animals were sacrificed and a part of proximal tibia was obtained for histopathologic analysis. Results: Mean gait score of control group and treatment group was 3.25 ± 0.707 and 1.00 ± 0.756 respectively with a statistically significant p-value of <0.001, while mean histopathological Modified Mankin score of control and treatment group was 11.5 ± 1.195 and 5.50 ± 1.195 respectively with a significant p-value of <0.001. Conclusion: Intra articular viscosupplementation of hyaluronic acid in rat model of osteoarthritis resulted in improved gait pattern and histopathology.

Background : The 1st and 2nd degree hemorrhoids is managed non-operatively with the anti-inflammatory and plebothropic drugs. Graptophyllum pictum extract (GPE) has already been used widely in Indonesia to treat hemorrhoid with good result, however, the mechanism is not supported by the molecular research.Objective : This study is intended to study the phlebothropic effects of GPE by measuring the degree of edema and extravassal leucocytes of experimental wistar hemorrhoid.Methods : Experimental study with Randomized Controlled Trial Post-test only design in male wistar rats, weight around 200 gr, induced for the development of a disease-like condition of hemorrhoids by 6% croton oil on the anus for 3 days. Random allocation was performed to divide the 14 wistar rats in 2 groups. Group I as control got normal saline solution, while group II was treated with GPE 100mg/kgbw, started on day 4th for 5 consecutive days. On 9th day blood was extracted from retroorbital fossa and anus was resected up to 2 cm from anal verge and weighted. The degree of anal edema was measured by rectoanal coefficient, that is rasio between anal weight (miligrams) and body weight (grams).Results : Until the end of study, all wistar rat were still alive. The mean (±SD) of body weight   of control group was 173.84 ­(±13.37) and the treatment group was 171.70  (±13.10), and there was no significant differences (p = 0.833). The mean (±SD) of rectoanal coefficient in the treatment group was 2.46 (±0.41) and it was significantly lower than control group  (3.13 ± 0.85) (p = 0.029). The mean (±SD) of extravassal leukocytes in the treatment group was 900.14(±48.09) and it was significantly lower than the control (1003.28 ± 99.30) (p = 0.042).Conclusions : Graptophyllum pictum extract at doses of 100 mg/Kgbw have phlebotonic effect  in decreased edema and extravassal leukocytes.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of chloroquine treatment on cyst excretion in calves naturally infected with Giardia duodenalis. The calves were randomly assigned into two groups based on placebo (group I, n=7 untreated control calves) or treatment (group II, n=7 calves treated orally with 2.5 mg/kg chloroquine twice daily for five consecutive days). The G. duodenalis isolates were identified by molecular characterization with β-giardin nested PCR and gene sequence analysis as assemblage A3. Cyst excretion was determined on days 0, 3, 7 and 10, before and after treatment. Geometric means of the number of excreted cysts did not change significantly in the control group during the trial. The reduction in cyst excretion after chloroquine treatment was 99% on day 3 and 100% on days 7 and 10. Chloroquine treatment is most probatly practically applicable, relatively inexpensive and highly effective against giardiosis in calves.

Background: Inadequate management of intraoperative pain poses a risk of postoperative chronic pain complications. The use of preemptive analgesia before the onset of surgical incision stimulation was considered to prevent central sensitization. Clinical research around the terms of preemptive analgesia needs to be proven by nociception-based intraoperative monitoring. An objective modality with EEG guidance can provide information on noxious stimuli.Objective: To determine the effectiveness of ketamine and fentanyl administration as preemptive analgesia measured by qNOX scores through the CONOX tool.Methods: This study is a single-blinded randomized experiment with the division of two groups: control and treatment. The control group received preemptive fentanyl, and the treatment group received preemptive ketamine and fentanyl. Then the qNOX score was assessed during operation.Result: The qNOX score of the treatment group in minute-15 and 30 was lower than the control group (p = 0.007; p = 0.025), while in the minute-90 it was higher than the control group (p = 0.001). The mean first 1-hour qNOX score was lower in the treatment group (p <0.001), while in the second 1-hour was higher in the treatment group (p = 0.003). The mean total dose of fentanyl supplementation in the treatment group was lower than in the control group (71.3 ± 25.1 grams vs. 92.0 ± 28.3 grams; p = 0.044).Conclusion: The administration of combined ketamine and fentanyl as preemptive analgesia is more effective in the first hour of surgery compared to single preemptive fentanyl measured by qNOX score. Preemptive ketamine and fentanyl decrease the total dose of intraoperative fentanyl supplementation compared with single-dose preemptive fentanyl administration.
