This paper explores a case example of qualitative research that applied productive hermeneutics and the central concept, fusion of horizons. Interpretation of meaning is a fusing of the researchers’ and subjects’ perspectives and serves to expand understanding. The purpose is to illustrate an exemplar of qualitative research without establishing a rigid recipe of methodology. The illustration is based on in-depth observational and textual data from an applied anthropological study conducted in western Alaska with Yup’ik hunters and fishers and government agency employees as they worked towards collaborative management. The metaphor of the hermeneutical circle is showcased to help the reader understand the philosophical underpinnings and the analytical processes used to realize a meaningful interpretation. A series of organizing systems for the interpretation is described, culminating in a final organizing system to communicate a fully realized understanding of collaborative management at the time.

This study aims to determine the responsiveness of public services in Indonesia during the Covid-19 pandemic, this time digital bureaucracy is very much needed in every government agency in carrying out its duties and functions in order to accelerate the process of public services during the Covid-19 pandemic. Service standardization is the next most important thing to keep the bureaucracy running effectively, quickly and responsively in providing the best service to the community. This study chooses a qualitative research type with a literature review approach. The results of this study found that The Indonesian bureaucracy has not been able to respond to strategic problems in Indonesia quickly due to several obstacles to an apathetic bureaucratic culture, and the lack of participation of all parties in the public service process during the Covid-19 pandemic, there are still shortcomings in terms of speed, quality and community satisfaction. This is also influenced by overlapping policies that take a long time to implement.

Surabaya is one of the cities with the highest waste generation. Managing waste effectively needs to be started from the source by waste sorting. This qualitative research used a study case approach to figure out trash sorting behavior in Surabaya. Data are gathered from an interview with Surabaya’s Department of Cleanliness and Green Open Space, Non-Government Agency related to waste, and Surabaya’s Main Waste Bank. Observation is conducted in Pusat Daur Ulang Jambangan, city parks and boulevards to see how people sort the waste in public areas. Even though Surabaya has a world-recognized hygiene program, it doesn't necessarily make its people care about cleanliness and sorting waste. The knowledge doesn’t always lead to behavior.  Waste sorting behavior is still related to the physical and social conditions of the community (external factors). Thus, to develop the sorting behavior requires three strategies: (1) strengthening policy; (2) providing ergonomic facilities; and (3) community involvement in changing behavior.

In this article, the authors explore prejudice from Gadamerian and de/colonial perspectives, grounded in methodological discourses of qualitative inquiry. Using a vignette of a typical conversation in a dissertation defense, the authors perform a Gadamerian and de/colonial reading informed by Anzaldúa, Mohanty, Smith, and Chakravorty Spivak. Through these readings the authors enact a fusion of horizons, a possibility forwarded by Gadamer as a critique of Enlightenment-based onto-epistemologies, which situate prejudice as a reminder to engage in expansive knowledge-making moves. De/colonial scholars add arguments about positionality and the need to engage with one’s own stuck places, places of contradictions and tensions, and conditions that cultivate deep introspection. The politics of evidence-based research continues to stifle and discipline the ways in which qualitative research can be engaged. Therefore, the authors offer possibilities in this article that would allow movement from Enlightenment-based onto-epistemologies to other more fluid and culturally situated expansive spaces of knowledge construction.

Organisational adaptability is the ability of an organisation to recognise the need to change and seize opportunities in dynamic environments. In an increasingly complex world, leadership must pay attention to dynamic, distributed, and contextual aspects in order to position their organisations for adaptability. The theory of dynamic capabilities constitutes a central concept for the requirements that enable organisational adaptability. Recent research suggested a model of “leadership for organisational adaptability” embedded in the theory of dynamic capabilities and ambidextrous leadership. This model ascribes leaders the task of creating “adaptive spaces”, which are ways to engage in tension that arises when new ideas collide with an organisation’s operational system, in order to generate and scale innovation. This work employs a qualitative research design by conducting expert interviews with participants from the management consulting industry as an exemplary object of research, and it identifies ways by which leaders can create such adaptive spaces. Findings indicate that leaders predominantly achieve this by providing employees with head space and opportunities to connect with others and promote diversity within their organisations. However, they could engage more actively in activities that pressure the organisation to change, leverage network structures to scale innovation, and in developing employees. It further emerged that organisations have not fully internalised the notion of distributed leadership, which is deemed crucial for coping with complexity.

On the Need for Anthropological Study of the Organizational Dimension of Religion Qualitative research on religion often overlooks its organizational aspect, even though most of religious life takes place within an organizational framework. Religious organizations are active on many levels: they educate and control religious specialists, shape religious materiality, and in many other ways influence how relationships with the sacred are conceptualized and lived out. The organization of religious life has implications that should be studied by researchers interested in lived religion, especially when they deal with such issues as religious experience, the integrative role of religion, ritual efficacy, and the transmission of practices and beliefs.
