Abstract Background and Objectives Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have greater psychological morbidity, despite that research in this area is scarce from developing countries. This study was aimed to assess the association of quality of life, social support, coping strategies, and psychological morbidity in patients with RA. Materials and Methods In this cross-sectional study, 40 patients with RA, who were not receiving steroids or disease modifying antirheumatic drugs, were recruited through purposive sampling. Social support questionnaire, coping strategy check list, and World Health Organization quality of life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) were administered to assess social support, coping, and quality of life, respectively. Results More than half of the patients had psychiatric disorders (60%), with depression being the commonest disorder (52.5%). Internalization coping and disease severity indicators like tender joints counts, swollen joints counts, pain, and disease activity were found as significant predictors for psychiatric disorders, while externalization coping, quality of life (all domains), and physical functions were found to protect against psychiatric morbidity. Conclusions Coping, quality of life, disease severity, and physical functions predicted the psychiatric disorders in RA. Multipronged interventions to enhance quality of life with promoting adaptive coping and timely treatment may further improve their mental health and overall disease course.

The study’s aim is to explore the experiences of people with advanced cancer and professionals participating in a program with focus on rehabilitation and palliative care. The study is based on two adjusted rehabilitation programs for 33 people with advanced cancer and 12 professionals. An observational study was conducted among the participants and two focus group interviews with 10 professionals. The analytic themes were “Lightness and happiness to gain control in everyday life,” “Community and closeness,” and “Training as a happiness and changing agent.” The activities had to support physical functions and everyday activities promoting body identity and well-being as well as emotions like closeness, lightness, and happiness in groups with like-minded people and at home with a partner and other family members. These activities and theory of emotions and body can expand the understanding of palliative care and rehabilitation as separated or integrated perspectives theoretical and in practice.

Despite being increasingly popular and commonly used in rehabilitation, both game-based exercise training and task-oriented circuit training have never been combined to provide a new training experience for stroke survivors undergoing rehabilitation. Past studies have assessed the effectiveness of these exercise approaches separately and reported positive outcomes. Combining the two training programs may create a more enriched environment and yield favorable outcomes. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of game-based task-oriented circuit training on the physical functions of stroke survivors. This research was a pretest-posttest experimental pilot trial involving 30 participants at post-acute and chronic stage post-stroke (mean age and standard deviation = 58.9 ± 6.6 years; mean Montreal Cognitive Assessment scoring = 23.4 ± 7.1) conducted at a state hospital in Kelantan, Malaysia between August 2019 to February 2020. All participants received game-based task-oriented circuit training using a “Checkercise Board” for 45 minutes, twice per week for 8 weeks. The outcome of the training was measured with regard to lower limb strength, functional stability and aerobic capacity, with the use of the 30-second chair rise test, Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) and 6-minute walk test, respectively. Analysis was done by the ‘intention-to-treat’ approach, using paired samples t-test to determine the differences between pre and post-training outcomes scores. All data was analyzed using the Statistics Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 23.0. The significance level was set at p < 0.05 and Cohen’s (d) was used to determine the effect size. Post-training, participants’ mean 30-second chair rise test, DGI and 6-minute walk test scores increased by 9%, 7% and 23% respectively compared to pre-treatment (p < 0.05), with medium effect size of 0.5 to 0.6. Game-based task-oriented circuit training effectively improves lower limb strength, functional stability and aerobic capacity of stroke survivors, and may be used as a therapy option for this population. A future study is needed to confirm these study finding.

Purpose: This study investigated the changes in the blood indices, specific athletic abilities, and physical fitness of outstanding cross-country skiers, trained in the subalpine; Methods: Twenty-eight athletes (twenty males and eight females) from the National Cross-country Ski Training Team completed sub-alpine training during the 2020–2021 snow season. The athletes′ physical functions were evaluated by collecting blood from elbow veins and measuring blood biochemical indexes. To compare the treadmill roller-skiing athletic ability and physical fitness of athletes before and after subalpine; Results: Male and female athletes showed different trends in red blood cells (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb), cortisol (C), Creatine Kinase (CK) and blood urea (BU) (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01). Overall, the female athletes’ mean values of RBC, Hb, CK, and BU were lower than that of male athletes, while C was just the opposite. Comparing the athletic performance of athletes before and after the subalpine, it was found that blood lactate concentrations were significantly lower in both male and female athletes at the same load intensity (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01), whereas 10 km endurance running and 1 RM deep squat were significantly higher in both male and female athletes (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01). Conclusions: After 6 months of subalpine training, cross-country skiers improved their oxygen-carrying capacity and anabolism, and showed significant improvements in specific athletic ability, physical endurance, acid tolerance and 1 RM absolute strength for both male and female athletes.

Purpose: The aim of this meta-analysis was to identify the effects of horticultural therapy on Korean elderly with dementia.Methods: We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, CINAHL, and eight domestic databases, until February 2021. Data extraction and the risk of bias assessment were independently conducted by two authors. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random-effects meta-analysis.Results: Of the 478 studies retrieved from the databases, 21 studies were included in the final analysis. A total of 93 outcome variables were analyzed in 21 literatures. The overall effect size of the horticultural treatment program was 0.91 (95% CI: 0.74~1.09, p<.001), which was statistically significant. Compared to the control group, horticultural therapy improved cognitive functions (SMD=0.71, 95% CI: 0.42~0.99, I2=79.9%), psychosocial functions (SMD=1.01, 95% CI: -0.70~1.31, I2=67.8%), and physical functions (SMD=1.05, 95% CI: 0.77~1.33, I2=72%) in Korean elderly with dementia.Conclusion: This meta-analysis found that horticultural therapy improved the cognitive, psychosocial, and physical functions of dementia patients compared to subjects in the control group.

Optimal crop nutrition is a significant factor in increasing agricultural vintage and quality of products. Zinc (Zn) is an immobile important micronutrient, which is taken up by plants in Zn2+ form to complete their life cycle efficiently. It plays a critical metabolic role in plants and is an important constituent of proteins and other large-molecules, and serves as structural and functional unit, or controlling cofactor for a wide range of enzymes. The Zn is needed in small and in appropriate amounts for plants main physiological processes to work normally. These processes play critical roles in photosynthetic activity of plants and forming carbohydrates, synthesis of protein, reproduction and seed development, growth, and disease protection. After Zn deficiency in plants, these physical functions are decreased, and plant health and productivity suffer greatly, subsequent in reduced production or even failure of crops and often bad quality of crop products. Plant Zn deficiencies occur on variety of soils and are severe due to a combination of symptoms like chlorosis, resetting, dieback and suppressed or irregular vegetative development. In addition, various crops require varying amount of Zn. So the knowledge regarding this is not up to date. The present review discusses the Zn importance in plants, its deficiency in soil and required level of Zn for crops.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is the most common degenerative joint disorder that results in disability and increased morbidity. Conventional treatment of OA with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) often leads to serious adverse side effects that may increase morbidity and mortality. Glucosamine and Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties which may supplement NSAIDs. Hence this study was aimed to determine the effectiveness and safety of these drugs in the management of knee OAMethods: 76 (63.33%) female and 44 (36.67%) male patients of OA of the knees were divided equally into four groups depending upon the therapy with Glucosamine or MSM or their combination (study groups) or none of them (control group) for 12 weeks. After the written consent, a detail Clinical History& Examination, Biochemical investigations, X-rays of chest and knees and ECG were done. The outcome of the treatment was assessed by Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis (WOMAC) Index and for any adverse drug effects.Results: After 12 weeks of study there was significant decrease in mean WOMAC pain scores (27.29-39.13) and total aggregate scores (23.53-37.14%) in study groups (p<0.01-p<0.001) as compared to control group (14.28 % and 8.82% respectively). Besides the relief of pain and improvement in physical functions were superior in patients treated with combination therapy. Conclusions: This study showed Glucosamine & MSM are effective in the management of OA of knee and are safe health supplement to NSAIDs while their combination was more superior and effective.

Abstract Background: Information about specific factors of physical function that contribute to psychological readiness is needed to plan rehabilitation for a return to sports. The purpose of this study was to identify specific physical functions related to the psychological readiness of patients aiming to return to sports 6 months after reconstruction. We hypothesized that the knee strength is a factor related to the Anterior Cruciate Ligament–Return to Sport After Injury Scale (ACL-RSI) cutoff score for a return to sports at 2 years after reconstruction.Methods: Fifty-four patients who had undergone primary reconstruction using hamstring tendon participated in this study. Psychological readiness was measured using the ACL-RSI in patients at 6 months after reconstruction. To identify specific physical functions related to the ACL-RSI score, participants were divided into groups with ACL-RSI scores of ³60 or <60. Non-paired t-tests or the Mann-Whitney test were performed to analyze group differences in objective variables in physical function: 1) knee strength in both legs; 2) leg anterior reach distance on both sides; and 3) single-leg hop (SLH) distances in three directions for both legs.Results: Significant differences between groups were identified in knee flexion strength (60°/s) for the uninvolved limb, hamstring-to-quadriceps ratio (60°/s) for the uninvolved limb, knee flexion strength (180°/s) for the involved limb, limb symmetry index (LSI) of leg anterior reach distance, the ratio of the distance to the height of the patient and LSI of SLH distances in lateral and medial directions. Conclusion: This study revealed that at 6 months after reconstruction, increased knee flexion strength (Ratio of the peak torque measured to the body mass of the patient), hamstring-to-quadriceps ratio, leg anterior reach distance LSI, and lateral and medial SLH appear important to exceed the ACL-RSI cutoff for a return to sports at 2 years after reconstruction. The present results may be useful for planning post-operative rehabilitation for long-term return to sports after reconstruction.

Though highly satisfying motherhood comes with its own challenges. Often underestimated, the effect of child birth on maternal function is a huge and can invariably effect not only the individual but the society in general. Yet there seems to be an attitude of “its all part and parcel of motherhood” when it comes to the functional status of mothers. To improve the functional status of women one needs to quantify it and a scale for Indian mothers are not in existence yet. No matter the mode of delivery , the maternal function is compromised, its said that the physiological healing is complete at 6 weeks post delivery but the researchers are not able to come to terms regarding time needed to achieve the pre pregnancy functional status or in many cases if it ever returns. Hence the gravity of situation is dare and needs acknowledgment not only from the health care professionals but from the society in general. In this article, we are examining the different modes of delivery and its subsequent effect on physical functions of women.
