A participant with cleft palate and compensatory articulation errors underwent 75 weeks of treatment using a hybrid telepractice and in-person treatment model. This model improved articulation skills during the study period and offers a starting point for continued exploration of telepractice for the treatment of compensatory articulation errors in cleft palate.

Problem Children with cleft-related articulation disorders receive ineffectual or inappropriate speech therapy locally due to lack of training and a disconnect between the team and local speech-language pathologists. Solution A collaborative care program that is billable for the team allows the local speech-language pathologist to earn continuing education units and facilitates effective local speech therapy. This program is the first of its kind, according to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Continuing Education Board for Speech Pathology.

This paper presents the results of an exploratory study into the influence of picture content and verbal language reading directions on reading procedural pictorial sequences. A sequence of four pictures representing the procedure hrow away after use as tested in four graphic configurations (one-line horizontal, one-line vertical, two-line horizontal and rhomboid), which were designed to be read in specific directions. The same configurations were also presented with the pictures removed to explore the effect of content on reading sequences. The results confirmed that verbal language reading directions are generally used to follow pictorial sequences. However, when the graphic configurations used to represent sequences are unfamiliar and the starting point of the sequence is not clear in the configuration, pictorial content influences the reading direction.

This paper aims to propose a basic content for teaching sustainability in undergraduate Management programs, covering a range of topics considered as critical for future professionals’ background. Although the existence of several studies on how to incorporate sustainability in higher education, just a few focus on “what” is to be taught, which is the focus of this paper. This exploratory study had two stages. First, a survey of the professional demands regarding sustainability by organizations was carried out, according to specialists. Secondly, we researched the knowledge in sustainability by undergraduate Management students from a recognised university in Brazil. Data analysis was based on exploratory factor analysis. The research presented 38 sustainability topics split into three major subjects organized according to their content to structure a core sustainability curriculum as an initial proposal. This proposal is not a set of unrelated subjects, disconnected from the context of the course, but complementary. Despite the barriers to the inclusion of sustainability in universities, particularly in countries with problems in education, instructors, and academic managers can use a basic content as we propose as a starting point to embed sustainability into students’ background, and consequently leading to wider sustainable impacts on society.

Individuals verbally express meaning not only through speech sounds and words but also prosodically through the pitch, loudness, and tempo of their voice. Through a quantitative analysis, this exploratory study examined the prosodic elements of mean pitch, pitch variability, and pitch range in a sample of 450 voice-overs and throws from 90 male and female broadcast reporters and anchors from larger markets across the United States. Findings indicate that compared to typical speakers in the general population, male broadcasters actually speak with an elevated mean pitch, more pitch variability, and use more range. However, female broadcasters were found to speak at slightly lower mean pitch levels when compared to other female speakers in the general population (but like males with more variability and range). It is hoped that this study will serve as a starting point in moving broadcast vocal coaching from that of just an art to a bit more of a science.

Need-adapted treatment of schizophrenia is an integrative treatment model developed in the Turku Schizophrenia Project. It is based on the interactional viewpoint and understanding on the interactional level. Experience of family and network therapy has shown that immediate interactions-oriented intervention is an essential starting-point for the treatment. It creates the possibility for the treatment as a whole to become a therapeutic process. For clinical purposes, it has seemed logical to divide the patients into three groups; the methods and focus of the family-oriented work differ somewhat between the groups. The main separator between these is the level of social functioning before the psychosis.

The study aims at investigating the main activities of corporate reputation in which CEOs are actively engaged, focusing also on the influence of CEOs tenure on their commitment in reputation management. Moreover, the paper analyzes the CEO’s view on the relation between CEO reputation and company’s reputation. Through a structured questionnaire, a web survey has been carried out addressing CEOs of large companies located in Italy and included in the report of Mediobanca. Findings highlight a relevant CEO commitment in corporate reputation management, above all in leadership, performance and workplace activities. Long-tenured CEOs tend to be more involved in managing firm’s reputation, than short-tenured CEOs. The study also shows CEOs are aware that their reputation are increasingly intertwined with the corporate reputation. The paper supports the strategic leadership perspective, contributing to the ongoing debate on CEO reputation. The influence of CEOs’ good name on company’s reputation stimulates them, and communication managers, to create an effective CEOs’ brand. The paper is the first study that provides empirical evidence on the increasing importance of CEO’s role in Italian large companies, and it can be viewed as a starting point for future cross-country comparison.

As the translation profession has become more technologized, translators increasingly work within an interface that combines translation from scratch, translation memory suggestions, machine translation post-editing, and terminological resources. This study analyses user activity data from one such interface, and measures temporal effort for English to Japanese translation at the segment level. Using previous studies of translation within the framework of relevance theory as a starting point, various features and edits were identified and annotated within the texts, in order to find whether there was a relationship between their prevalence and translation effort. Although this study is exploratory in nature, there was an expectation based on previous studies that procedurally encoded utterances would be associated with greater translation effort. This expectation was complicated by the choice of a language pair in which there has been little research applying relevance theory to translation, and by contemporary research that has made the distinction between procedural and conceptual encoding appear more fluid than previously believed. Our findings are that some features that lean more towards procedural encoding (such as prevalence of pronouns and manual addition of postpositions) are associated with increased temporal effort, although the small sample size makes it impossible to generalise. Segments translated with the aid of translation memory showed the least average temporal effort, and segments translated using machine translation appeared to require more effort than translation from scratch.

Abstract Background Routine screening for frailty at admission by nurses may be useful to detect geriatric risks and problems at an early stage. However, the added value of this screening is not clear yet. Information about the opinions and attitudes of nurses towards this screening is also lacking. As they have a crucial role in conducting this screening, an exploratory study was performed to examine hospital nurses’ opinions and perspectives about this screening and how it influences their daily work. Methods A qualitative, exploratory approach was employed, using semi-structured interviews with 13 nurses working on different general medical wards (surgical and internal medicine) in three Dutch hospitals. Frailty screening had been implemented for several years in these hospitals. Results The participating nurses reported that frailty screening can be useful to structure their work, create more awareness of frail older patients and as starting point for pro-active nursing care. At the same time, they assess their clinical view as more important than the results of a standard screening tool. The nurses hardly used the overall screening scores, but were particularly interested in information regarding specific items, such as delirium or fall risk. Screening results are partly embedded systematically and in daily nursing care, e.g., in team briefings or during transfer of patients to other wards. The majority of the nurses had received little training about the background of frailty screening and the use of screening tools. Conclusions Most nurses stated that frailty screening tools are helpful in daily practice. However, nurses did not use the frailty screening tools in the referred way; tools were particularly used to evaluate patients on separate items of the tool instead of the summative score of the tool. When frailty screening tools are implemented in daily practice, training needs to be focused on. Additional research in this field is necessary to gain more insight into nurses’ opinions on frailty screening.

Due to the unprecedented period which has swept over educational agencies, as well as society as a whole, it is appropriate to try to learn and understand the first effects of these transformations operating on different levels: educational, formative, relational, and social. This contribution intends to develop some reflections on the different dimensions which have affected more than others the educational, formative, and scholastic experience, paying particular attention to the educational relationship and the modifications in teaching. The analysis takes as its starting point some empirical data from an exploratory study at the Università degli Studi Roma Tre. The role of the school on the path of cultural humanisation of the human being is then presented, followed by a critical discussion on how the teaching and relational changes that have inevitably been introduced this year fit into this path. Lastly, the conclusion considers how to transform the crisis which has struck schools at the heart into an opportunity for thinking about them with a wider perspective.
