Human Factors — The Early Years

One way to examine the progress of the Human Factors discipline is to perform a content analysis of the programs of the Society's early annual meetings. The period covered is 1959-1972, after which proceedings were published. The results of the analysis shows that interest in some research topics ebbs and flows, whereas other interests remain relatively stable.

Debate over the present-day meaning of the traditional political terms ‘left’ and ‘right’ has been ongoing for at least three decades. Many claim that these labels have lost their former relevance. This article offers a comparative analysis of the Israeli, Polish, and Hungarian party systems. Using qualitative content analysis, it examines party platforms and politicians’ speeches in order to assess the significance of political labels both in political narratives and academic debate. Two main research topics concerning political systems of the three countries are explored in the article: the blurring of the traditional left-right divisions and the partial adoption of an anti-establishment agenda by mainstream parties.

There are various studies concerning the present situation of the phenomenon of educational music, which dates back to the early years of the Republic i.e. which emerged 90 years ago, the problems in the area, and solutions to these problems as well as the concept of “educational music” which is used to define the songs that are part of music education. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the area of educational music based on composers’ opinions, in other words, on the opinions of the creators of the subject music, and to determine the present situation of the area in the light of these evaluations. For these purposes, 7 composers, all of whom had contributed to educational music, were interviewed. The resultant data were analyzed under three themes by means of content analysis. The themes were the concept of educational music, educational music compositions and educational music composing. As a result, composers indicated that songs composed as educational music pieces should have a content that children can relate to. They also said that music teachers and prospective music teachers who had the ability to compose should engage in the composition of educational music. According to composers, in order for songs to be of good musical quality; easy and catchy melodies and lyrics, prosody, melodic sequence, harmonic structure and form components were important. Composers also expressed their opinions regarding “the points to be considered and the method to be followed in the process of composition”, “essential skills and knowledge in addition to the ability to compose”, and “types of music preferred in compositions”. In addition to this research, further studies, which take opinions of music teachers, who are the appliers of educational music, and those of students, who are the receivers and consumers of educational music, into account, can be undertaken so as to be able to evaluate the area of educational music from different perspectives.

This study applied a content analysis methodology in two ways to evaluate first-year students’ research topics: a rubric to examine proposed topics in terms of scope, development, and the “researchability” of the topic, as well as textual analysis, using ATLAS.ti, to provide an overview of the types of subjects students select for a persuasive research essay. Results indicated that students struggle with defining an appropriate and feasible focus for their topics and that they often select topics related to education, health, and the environment. These findings were used to implement a new information literacy instruction model that better supports student topic development.

From the analyses of 5,044 boating accidents in 1972, profiles of accidents involving the 1,320 Drownings, 120 Other Deaths, Damage and Injury categories were tabularized to show typical patterns of the respective accident categories. The most significant finding was the high percent of drowning fatalities in boats. About 70% of the Drownings and 30% of the Other Deaths occurred in boats under 16 feet; and most of them had little or no engine power. In the 16–26 foot range, about 50% of the Other Deaths and 50% of the Damage occurred. Two areas of needed research are implied here. First, the sensory related capabilities of people to maintain balance in small boats has been apparently grossly overestimated. Second, in the larger boats there is the problem of collisions with people and objects which lead to the higher Damage and Other Death data results. Visibility, handling skills, decision making and vigilance are areas which would seem to be potentially linked to these losses. Research topics in these areas are suggested as being necessary to provide information needed for future standards, better engineering design practices and operator education classes.

This paper describes a novel use of interview and focus group data to generate and substantiate hypotheses about a complex environment. In addition, it shows how MacSHAPA, a tool developed for analyzing sequential data, is a useful tool for analyzing these data. Although interviews and focus groups have been used extensively in social science and marketing, there are few examples documenting the use of these techniques in user-centered design. Furthermore, MacSHAPA has not been used to perform content analysis on interview and focus group data. In this paper, interviews and focus groups were collected as part of a larger study to understand human factors issues in quick service restaurant chains. These data were analyzed using MacSHAPA to perform content analysis. The results generated hypotheses that were validated by other data collection activities, and substantiated hypotheses that were derived by other analyses. The shortcomings and tradeoffs of using this analysis method for a human factors investigation are discussed.

Research shows that more than 80% of accidents at sea were caused by human related factors. Some experts implied that less than adequate design is one significant element that may lead to human errors. There are several ways to discover whether a design has considered human factors, i.e., to refer to the design specification, to consult the designers, to conduct a direct observation through a site visit or through a model, to interview the users, or to look into the system that regulates the design. This paper applied a content analysis methodology to explore how human factors have been covered in the design of marine systems. Various documents such as rules, regulations, design guidelines, standards and other texts have been analysed. The results indicate that there are extensive references that cover human factors in designing ships. They are published with different degrees of enforcement, some are prescriptive and some are obligatory but still optional. The topic is developing very rapidly. A more assertive measure is required from the regulators to endorse human factors into implementation.
