Abstract Background The single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction (SSGBLUP) method is a popular approach for genetic evaluation with high-density genotype data. To solve the problem that pedigree and genomic relationship matrices refer to different base populations, a single-step genomic method with metafounders (MF-SSGBLUP) was put forward. The aim of this study was to compare the predictive ability and bias of genomic evaluations obtained with MF-SSGBLUP and standard SSGBLUP. We examined feed conversion ratio (FCR) and average daily gain (ADG) in DanBred Landrace (LL) and Yorkshire (YY) pigs using both univariate and bivariate models, as well as the optimal weighting factors (ω), which represent the proportions of the genetic variance not captured by markers, for ADG and FCR in SSGBLUP and MF-SSGBLUP. Results In general, SSGBLUP and MF-SSGBLUP showed similar predictive abilities and bias of genomic estimated breeding values (GEBV). In the LL population, the predictive ability for ADG reached 0.36 using uni- or bi-variate SSGBLUP or MF-SSGBLUP, while the predictive ability for FCR was highest (0.20) for the bivariate model using MF-SSGBLUP, but differences between analyses were very small. In the YY population, predictive ability for ADG was similar for the four analyses (up to 0.35), while the predictive ability for FCR was highest (0.36) for the uni- and bi-variate MF-SSGBLUP analyses. SSGBLUP and MF-SSGBLUP exhibited nearly the same bias. In general, the bivariate models had lower bias than the univariate models. In the LL population, the optimal ω for ADG was ~ 0.2 in the univariate or bivariate models using SSGBLUP or MF-SSGBLUP, and the optimal ω for FCR was 0.70 and 0.55 for SSGBLUP and MF-SSGBLUP, respectively. In the YY population, the optimal ω ranged from 0.25 to 0. 35 for ADG across the four analyses and from 0.10 to 0.30 for FCR. Conclusions Our results indicate that MF-SSGBLUP performed slightly better than SSGBLUP for genomic evaluation. There was little difference in the optimal weighting factors (ω) between SSGBLUP and MF-SSGBLUP. Overall, the bivariate model using MF-SSGBLUP is recommended for single-step genomic evaluation of ADG and FCR in DanBred Landrace and Yorkshire pigs.

Results In general, SSGBLUP and MF-SSGBLUP methods showed similar predictive abilities and biasedness of GEBVs. In LL, for ADG, the predictive ability for SSGBLUP was up to 0.355, while MF-SSGBLUP reached a highest predictive ability of 0.356; for FCR, the predictive ability for MF-SSGBLUP together with a bivariate model was highest (0.196) among all the different scenarios. In YY, performances of genomic prediction for ADG were almost similar among different scenarios and predictive ability for ADG was up to 0.347; for FCR, the highest predictive ability (0.355) was obtained in MF-SSGBLUP. In biasedness, SSGBLUP and MF-SSGBLUP performed nearly the same, and bivariate models generally had less biasedness than univariate models. Additionally, in terms of the optimal weighting factors (ω), in LL, regardless of a univariate or a bivariate model was used, the optimal ω for ADG were around 0.2 in both SSGBLUP and MF-SSGBLUP; for FCR, 0.70 and 0.55 were the optimal ω in SSGBLUP and MF-SSGBLUP method, respectively. In YY, the optimal ω ranged from 0.25 to 0.35 for ADG and from 0.10 to 0.30 for FCR in different scenarios. Conclusions This study indicated that MF-SSGBLUP method performed at least as good as SSGBLUP for genomic evaluation. The optimal weighting factors (ω) in SSGBLUP and MF-SSGBLUP are not dramatically different. Overall, MF-SSGBLUP in combination with a bivariate model was recommended for single-step genomic evaluation for ADG and FCR in DanBred Landrace and Yorkshire pigs.

Abstract The objective of this study was to implement a multi-trait genomic evaluation for maternal and growth traits in a swine population. Phenotypes for preweaning mortality, litter size, weaning weight, and average daily gain were available for 282K Large White pigs. The pedigree included 314k individuals, of which 35,731 were genotyped for 45K SNPs. Variance components were estimated in a multi-trait animal model without genomic information by AIREMLF90. Genomic breeding values were estimated using the genomic information by single-step GBLUP. The algorithm for proven and young (APY) was used to reduce computing time. Genetic correlation between proportion and the total number of preweaning deaths was 0.95. A strong, positive genetic correlation was also observed between weaning weight and average daily gain (r = 0.94). Conversely, the genetic correlations between mortality and growth traits were negative, with an average of -0.7. To avoid computations by expensive threshold models, preweaning mortality was transformed from a binary trait to two linear dam traits: proportion and a total number of piglets dead before weaning. Because of the high genetic correlations within groups of traits, inclusion of only one growth and one mortality trait in the model decreases computing time and allows for the inclusion of other traits. Reduction in computing time for the evaluation using APY was up to 20x, and no differences in EPD ranking were observed. The algorithm for proven and young improves the efficiency of genomic evaluation in swine without harming the quality of predictions. For this population, a binary trait of mortality can be replaced by a linear trait of the dam, resulting in a similar ranking for the selection candidates.

Two experiments with a total of 176 pigs were conducted to assess the effects of dietary protein level and amino acid balance on performance of starting, growing, and finishing pigs and carcass quality at market weight. Diets offered in the three stages of growth contained 20, 17, or 14% protein, 14% protein + 0.2% L-lysine HCl (L), or 14% protein + L + 0.1% DL-methionine (M). Feed intake, average daily gain, and feed conversion were inferior in the starting period for pigs fed the 14% protein diet, with less effect as the pigs aged. A compensatory feed conversion effect in later growth stages was observed in pigs fed 14% protein diets throughout. However, age to market averaged 2–3 weeks longer for pigs fed the 14% protein sequence throughout compared with other treatments. L or L plus M supplements improved feed intake, rate of gain, and feed conversion, with less effect as the pigs aged. The sequences of 20, 17, 14; 20, 14, 14; or 17, 17, 17% protein resulted in an average overall daily gain of 0.70 kg. Digestible energy and nitrogen coefficients were not influenced by diet, breed, or sex. In experiment 1, treatment had no effect on carcass measurements but in experiment 2, loin area was reduced in pigs fed 14% protein diets throughout and was improved with amino acid supplements. Although gilts generally had lower feed intakes and slower gains than barrows, they had equal feed conversion and superior carcasses. Hampshire × Yorkshire pigs gained more slowly but had superior carcasses in comparison with Landrace × Yorkshire pigs in experiment 2. The experiments demonstrate that there is considerable flexibility allowable in levels and sequence of protein that may be fed during starting, growing, and finishing periods to allow similar performance of market pigs.

The influence of high (HE) and low (LE) digestible energy diets fed for two 1-hr periods per day on the performance of Duroc × Yorkshire, Hampshire × Yorkshire, or Yorkshire × Yorkshire pigs marketed at 68, 91 or 114 kg liveweight was studied. Under the feeding system employed, daily feed intake averaged 2.01 kg and did not differ between dietary groups. The HE diet containing 3652 kcal DE/kg improved (P < 0.01) rate of gain and feed conversion compared with the LE diet containing 2757 kcal DE/kg. DE requirement averaged 9.89 Mcal/kg gain and did not differ between dietary groups. Carcasses from pigs fed the HE diet had higher dressing percentage, greater total backfat thickness, and lower ratio of loin to backfat thickness, percent lean in the ham face, ham as a percent of carcass and Canadian ROP score.Barrows had a higher daily feed consumption and average daily gain but were inferior to gilts in feed conversion. Gilts were superior to barrows in all carcass measurements except dressing percentage, where differences were nonsignificant.Breeding groups differed (P < 0.01) in rate of gain, feed conversion, and dressing percentage and their carcasses differed in loin area and length. Feed required per unit gain increased with increasing market weights but gain did not differ. With increasing market weights, dressing percentage, length, loin area and total backfat thickness increased while the ham as a percent of carcass and ROP scores decreased. Market weight did not significantly alter the ratio of loin area to total backfat, suggesting that the present Canadian carcass grading standards should be extended to cover a greater weight range without penalty.Major significant interactions for average daily gain existed between diet by sex and diet by breeding group and for feed conversion between diet by sex. The data indicate that sex and breeding background of market pigs are important considerations in formulation of energy requirements. Use of LE diets or of feeding methods that restrict DE intake may mask potential differences that exist between groups.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary LY or LY combined with ZnO supplementation on performance and gut health in nursery pigs. 192 Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire piglets (weaned on d 32 of the age with 9.2 ± 1.7 kg BW) were allocated into four treatments with eight replicate pens, six piglets per pen. The treatments included a basal diet as control (CTR), an antibiotic plus ZnO diet (CTC-ZnO, basal diet + 75 mg/kg of chlortetracycline + ZnO (2000 mg/kg from d 1 to 14, 160 mg/kg from d 15 to 28)), a LY diet (LY, basal diet + 2 g/kg LY), and a LY plus ZnO diet (LY-ZnO, basal diet + 1 g/kg LY + ZnO). The results showed that pigs fed LY or LY-ZnO had increased (p < 0.05) average daily gain, serum IgA, IgG, superoxide dismutase, fecal butyric acid, and total volatile fatty acid concentrations, as well as decreased (p < 0.05) feed conversion ratio and diarrhea rate compared with CTR. In conclusion, pigs fed diets with LY or LY combined with ZnO had similar improvement to the use of antibiotics and ZnO in performance, antioxidant status, immunoglobulins, and gut health in nursery pigs.

Sixteen blocks of eight littermate pigs were weaned at 3 weeks of age and each divided into four groups. Various levels of nutrition were applied to the pigs so that the four groups reached 20 kg. at 59, 68, 80 and 91 days of age, respectively.Only small differences were observed between groups in feed conversion ratio to 20 kg.; however, Group 4 required more feed per kg. gain than the three other groups.During the second period (20–90 kg.) the pigs in each group were divided into two sub-groups, which were on a high and a low plane of nutrition respectively. In both sub-groups the type of feeding before 20 kg. influenced the average daily gain and feed conversion ratio. The older the pigs were at 20 kg. the higher the daily gain and the lower the feed conversion ratio in the following period. There was an increase in daily feed intake with increased age at 20 kg. for pigs fed ad lib. during the second period.An increase in age at 20 kg. caused a significant decrease in thickness of backfat, a greater area of eye muscle and a smaller area of fat overlying muscle. For pigs fed ad lib. the area of eye muscle was significantly increased by a higher age at 20 kg. live-weight.

The objective of this work was to evaluate performance, efficiency parameters and phenotypic correlations among measurements of energy efficiency of Nellore cattle selected for post weaning weight and classified according to residual feed intake, calculated by the difference between observed and predicted intake, based on average metabolic body weight and average daily gain. Thus, animals were classified within three groups: high (> mean + 0.5 standard deviation, less efficient); medium (±0.5 standard deviation of the mean); and low (< mean - 0.5 standard deviation, more efficient) residual feed intake. No differences were observed at initial and final body weights, average daily gain and dry matter intake among groups. Animals with low residual feed intake also had greater feed efficiency, feed conversion and partial efficiency of growth and did not differ from the other animals regarding to relative growth rate and Kleiber ratio. Residual feed intake was significantly correlated to feed efficiency (-0.25), feed conversion (0.25), partial efficiency of growth (-0.37) and dry matter intake (0.16) but it did not present significant correlation with body weight (0.04), average daily gain (-0.02), relative growth rate (-0.03) and Kleiber ratio (-0.05). Significant correlations were found between feed conversion and initial body weight (0.34) and average daily gain (-0.46). Partial efficiency of growth presented significant correlation with all other efficiency parameters analyzed. Residual feed intake has high potential in productive efficiency, when compared to the other energy efficiency measurements, being independent of growth and size of the animals.

Genetic parameters were estimated for 2403 purebred Yorkshire pigs over a 2-yr period, representing 21 sires. The traits studied included average daily gain, age adjusted to 90 kg, ultrasonic measurements of backfat at the mid-back and loin positions, total and adjusted total ultrasonic backfat and corresponding carcass backfat measurements. Least squares analyses were used to estimate and adjust for the effects of sex, year-season and sex by year-season interaction. Heritabilities and genetic correlations were calculated for all traits using both half- and full-sib estimates. Adjusted age and adjusted total ultrasonic backfat measurements were found to have the highest heritabilities of the live traits in this study. Estimates of heritability for adjusted age and adjusted total ultrasonic backfat were 0.24 ± 0.10 and 0.26 ± 0.10 based on half-sib and 0.56 ± 0.07 and 0.41 ± 0.06 from full-sib analyses. The genetic correlation between these two traits was −0.07 ± 0.28 based on the half-sib method. The total phenotypic correlation was −0.01 ± 0.02. Abstract(An experiment with two groups of East Balkan pigs – castrated males (n=10) and females (n=10), was carried out to study the growth performance and fattening abilities of the animals from the weaning until slaughter. The pigs were included in the trial at 60 day age. The average live weight of the castrated males was 8. 65±1.08 kg and for the females, 8.5±0.62 kg.The pigs were reared using traditional technology, grazing on natural pastures in the Strandzha mountain, Bulgaria. In autumn, acorns were naturally present in their diet. According to the category, the animals additionally received ground organic feed (50% barley and 50% wheat). The trial lasted 304 days (from February to November, 2019). During this period the final live weight of the male castrated pigs reached 88.00 kg while that of the females was 84.4 kg. The difference, however, was not significant. Furthermore, no significant differences in the growth performance characteristics that could be attributed to the sex of the animals were observed. The average daily gain of both sexes tended to be lower in summer and higher in autumn. The feed conversion ratio was higher in summer. The animals showed high average daily weight gain at pasture when their live weight was over 50 kg.

UTILIZATION OF “GEDI LEAF (Abelmoschus Manihot (L) Medik) AS“ADDITIVE” IN DRINKING WATER RELATED TO THE PERFORMANCE OF INDONESIAN SUPER NATIVE CHICKEN. Research was done to evaluate the performance of Indonesian super native chicken treated with “Gedi” leaf (Abelmoschus Manihot (L) Medik) as“Additive” in drinking water. Study was conducted using hundred individuals of the Indonesian super native day old chicken. The juice of “Gedi” leaf (Abelmoschus Manihot (L) Medik) was given as in forms of the four treatments as follows, drinking water without “Gedi” leaf as control (P0), drinking water with 10 ml juice of “Gedi” leaf per liter of drinking water (P1), drinking water with 20 ml juice of “Gedi” leaf per liter of drinking water (P2), and drinking water with 30 ml juice of “Gedi” leaf per liter of drinking water (P3). Treatments were applied to the birds at 6 weeks old by completely randomized design five replications at each treatment. Data were taken during 5 weeks. Feeds were using 73 percents of commercial feed added by 10 percents of corn and 17 percents of rice bran with nutritional composition of crude protein 19.49 percents, crude fiber 4.66 percents, fat 3.63 percents, Calcium 1.02 percents, Phosphorus 0.66 percents and metabolic energy of 2920 kcal/kg, all given ad libitum. Variables measurement were focused on feed consumption, drinking water consumption, average daily gain, and feed conversion. Results showed that drinking water with 30 ml juice of “Gedi” leaf per liter of drinking water (P3) was not significantly different with other treatments for feed and drinking water consumption, except for average daily gain and feed conversion. The treatments of P1 and P2 were not significantly different for average daily gain, but these treatments were higher in average daily gain compared with control (P0). The highest value of feed conversion was obtained at treatment P3 and the lowest value was found at treatment P1. These values indicated that the best feed conversion was treatment P1. Therefore, it can be concluded that juice of “Gedi” leaf can be used as the alternative additive feed in drinking water up to 20 ml juice of “Gedi” leaf per liter of drinking water in term of high average daily gain and feed conversion of Indonesian super native chicken. Key words: Drinking water, “Gedi” leaf, Indonesian super native chicken.
