Abstract Background Periodontitis can lead to the destruction of periodontium and adversely influence the overall health, wellbeing, and quality of life. However, studies on the relationship between severe periodontitis and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] are limited. This study is designed to explore the relationship between 25(OH)D and severe periodontitis. Methods A cross-section study of 2928 participants enrolled from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2013 to 2014 was conducted. The periodontal examination was performed using a total oral periodontal examination program, and probe measurements were collected at six sites per tooth in NHANES. Severe periodontitis was characterized as: ≥ 2 interproximal sites with attachment loss (AL) ≥ 6 mm (not on the same tooth) and ≥ 1 interproximal site with probing depth (PD) ≥ 5 mm. Severe periodontitis and serum 25(OH)D were the dependent and independent variables, respectively. Univariate, multivariate, and subgroup analyses were performed to explore the relationship between severe periodontitis and serum 25(OH)D. Results Among the 2928 participants, the average age of the population was 50 ± 13.71 years old, with 1425 (48.67%) males, 316 (10.79%) exhibited severe periodontitis. Serum 25(OH)D showed a significantly negative association with severe periodontitis after adjusting all variables (OR 0.75, 95% CI 0.63–0.89). In addition, severe periodontitis has a nonlinear relationship with serum 25(OH)D, whoes inflection point was 102 (nmol/L). On the left side of the inflection point (25(OH)D ≤ 102 nmol/L), the effect size was 0.98 and 95%CI was 0.98–0.99 (25(OH)D per 1 nmol/L increments). On the right side of the inflection point (25(OH)D > 102 nmol/L), the effect size was 0.99 and 95% CI was 0.98–1.01. The subgroup analysis showed pronounced changes in non-Hispanic white, alcohol consumption, diabetes, and health insurance. Conclusion Serum 25 (OH) D in relation to severe periodontitis is nonlinear in our study.When serum 25 (OH) D is less than 102 nmol/L, serum 25 (OH) D is negatively associated with severe periodontitis.

AbstractSupplemental vitamin D can reduce the risk and mortality of viral pneumonia. The relationship between 25 hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and the severity and mortality of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was evaluated. In this cross-sectional study, the admitted patients with COVID-19 were categorized as mild, moderate, severe, and critical based on clinical and radiologic characteristics. Calcium, phosphorus, albumin, creatinine, and serum 25(OH)D were measured and their correlation with the severity of disease and mortality were analyzed. During 2 months, 508 patients (442 patients in general wards and 66 patients in the intensive care unit (ICU)) were included. The participants were 56 ± 17 years old (52% male, 37% with comorbidity). Concerning severity, 13%, 42%, 36%, and 9% had mild, moderate, severe, and critical diseases, respectively. The mortality rate was 10.8%. Admission to ICU, severity of disease and mortality decreased significantly across quartiles of 25(OH)D. According to multivariate logistic regression analysis, disease mortality had a positive correlation with age and had a negative correlation with the serum level of 25(OH)D, calcium, and albumin. In hospitalized patients with COVID-19, low 25(OH)D was associated with severe disease and increased ICU admission and mortality rate.

Abstract Background: Ectopic fat obesity and Triglycerides are risk factors for diabetes and multiple cardiovascular diseases, but the data on the relationship between Triglycerides and the risk of ectopic fat obesity are limited. The purpose of this study is to explore the connection between Triglycerides and ectopic fat obesity.Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, we retrospectively analyzed 15464 adult participants recruited by Murakami Memorial Hospital from 2004-2015(8430 men and 7034 women, average age 43.71±8.9), to performed the relationship between Triglycerides and ectopic fat obesity, we divided all patients into 4 groups according to the quartile of Triglycerides. Logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between Triglycerides and the risk of ectopic fat obesity, and the generalized additive model was used to identify the nonlinear relationship.Results: In the study population, the prevalence of ectopic fat obesity was 17.73%, and gradually increased in the quartile of Triglycerides (2.86,7.89,18.25 and 41.22% respectively, P < 0.001).After adjusting other covariables, Triglycerides was positively correlated with the risk of ectopic fat obesity (OR:1.55,95%CI:1.41-1.69, p<0.00001). Then we carried out smooth curve fitting and found that there was an inverted U-shaped curve relationship between Triglycerides and ectopic fat obesity, even if those adjusted covariables were removed from the model, the result remained unchanged, and the inflection point of the curve was 3.98. On the left side of the inflection point, Triglycerides was positively correlated with the risk of ectopic fat obesity(OR:1.784,95%CI:1.611-1.975,p<0.0001), while on the right side of the inflection point, there was a negative correlation (OR:0.519,95%CI:0.333-0.810,p=0.0039).Conclusions: Our research shows that there is a significant correlation between Triglycerides and ectopic fat obesity, this relation is not a simple linear relationship, but it was an inverted U-shaped curve relationship.

Methods: The cross-sectional study of 368 healthy volunteers with no history of liver diseases was used to examine risk factors. The associations between ALT, G and ALP and 25(OH)D were assessed by Pearson correlation and Spearman correlation, respectively. Linear regression analysis was carried out in different models with ALT, GGT and ALP as dependent variables. Results: The results found no significant difference between ALT and ALP in different vitamin D groups (25(OH)D < 25 nmol/L、25-50 nmol/L and > 50 nmol/L) ( Kruskal-Wallis test, all p > 0.05 ). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that there were no significant association between ALT, GGT and ALP levels and 25(OH)D concentration, respectively, after adjusting covariates including age, BMI, sex, BuN, Cr, UA, AST, Ghb, ALB, WBC, cholesterol, HDL, LDL, cholesterol, and total protein. (All p > 0.1). Conclusion: This study suggested that there was no association between the 25(OH)D concentration and the levels of ALT, GGT or ALP in normal population.

Background: The metabolic syndrome is a constellation of cardiometabolic risk factors that tend to cluster together in affected individuals more often than predicted by chance. The presence of the metabolic syndrome substantially increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and is associated with a range of adverse clinical outcomes, many of which are closely associated with aging. Current estimates suggest that approximately 20 - 25% of the world’s population is affected by the metabolic syndrome. The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome rises with age and more than 45% of people aged over 60 years have the metabolic syndrome. Recent studies show that low vitamin D status is very common in the world and this is a risk factor of metabolic syndrome. Objective: (1) Plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration in subjects with metabolic syndrome. (2) Cut off value of plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration for predicting metabolic syndrome. Material and method: A cross-sectional study with control group on 318 adult subjects for health examinations at International Medical Center at Hue Central Hospital, including 139 subjects with metabolic syndrome and control group of 179 healthy subjects. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the IDF, NHLBI, AHA, WHF, IAS, IASO (2009). Plasma hydroxyvitamin D concentration was measured using chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay. Reciever operating characteristic (ROC) curve were generated to assess sensitivity and specificity for different cut off value of 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration for predicting metabolic syndrome. Results: Plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration in subjects with metabolic syndrome was 26.4 ng/ml, incidence of plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency (59.7%) was significantly higher than in control group (23.5%) (p < 0.001). The optimal cut off point for 25-OH-D concentration for predictor of metabolic syndrome as 26.4 ng/ml (AUC=0.657, sensitivity=53.4%, specificity=71.6%). Conclusion: In 139 subjects with metabolic syndrome, the plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration was 26.4 ng/ml and the incidence of 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency in the metabolic syndrome group was 59.7%. The optimal cut off point for plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration for predictor of metabolic syndrome as 26.4 ng/ml. Key words: Metabolic syndrome, 25-hydroxyvitamin D

Objective: To examine the association between 25-Hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and sleep duration among Chinese adolescents. Subjects and methods: A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted among Chinese adolescents in 2017. Data on a total of 800 adolescents aged 8–14 years was used for this study. Anthropometric measurements such as height and weight were measured by trained research staff. Serum 25(OH)D and lipids were measured in the laboratory. Sleep habits and other health-related behaviors were tested by questionnaire. Results: 25(OH)D levels were significantly positively correlated with sleep duration (r = 0.11, p < 0.05). In multivariate logistic regression analyses, insufficiency/deficiency of vitamin D (25(OH)D ≤ 20 ng/mL) was significantly associated with increased probability of short sleep (AOR = 1.67, 95% CI = 1.14–2.43). Conclusions: Low 25(OH)D levels were independently associated with the risk of insufficient sleep in Chinese adolescents.
