Abstract Background Learning environment is an important base for learning processes of students and for preferences of future workplaces. It is considered as an essential factor in determining the success of an effective curriculum and the students’ academic achievements. This study attempts to assess the perception of learning environment among the nursing students. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study design was used to conduct the study among 122 nursing students studying at B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Science. Data were collected following total enumerative sampling method using a self-administered questionnaire. Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) inventory tool was used to assess the perception of learning environment. Descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation) was used to describe the demographic and other related variables. One way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to find out the difference in the overall scale score and its subscales across the selected socio-demographic variables (age, ethnicity, residence, year of enrollment) of the respondents. Results The mean age of the students was 21 ± 1.46 years. Majority of the students were from Province no. 1 (57.4%) and largely from Sunsari district (25.4%). First year students were found to be more satisfied (68.23%) with the educational environment (136.45 ± 16.93) compared to student of other years. Academic self-perception (21.94 ± 3.42) was the highest scoring subscale (68.57%) while the social self-perception (16.43 ± 2.96) was the lowest (58.66%). The overall DREEM score (131.25 ± 15.82 out of 200) indicated that perception of learning environment among the students was positive. Despite overall positive perception, students perceived that the teachers were authoritative and there is lack of good support system for the students at the time of stress. The total DREEM score varied significantly between the years of enrollment (p < 0.05). Conclusion The current study showed positive perception of learning environment which varied significantly according to the year of enrollment. However improvements are required across all the five domains for the high quality educational environment. Future qualitative studies are recommended to confirm and to have in-depth understanding of this finding.

Background: The environment where education takes place is essential for students’ engagement and motivation. This study aimed at assessing students’ perception of their educational environment at a private medical college and the influence of gender, among other factors, on it. Objectives: The study assessed the students’ perception of their learning environment, determined the gender effect on environment perception, and examined the correlation between different study variables. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study on 340 undergraduate medical students at a private college with gender-segregated programs. The Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) was used to determine the students' perception of their learning environment. This was correlated with a set of variables, including gender and educational achievement as indicated by students' GPA. Results: The overall DREEM score was ‘more positive than negative’ (114.39/200). The scores of subscales were towards the positive side. This was evident in the perception of learning (26.64/48), perception of teaching (26.36/44), perception of the atmosphere (26.51/48), academic self-perception (19.54/32), and social self-perception (15.33/28). Conclusions: There were statistically significant differences between the perceptions of males and females in both the overall DREEM scale (females: 117.59/200 and males: 111.18/200) and three of the subscales. Female students perceived their learning environment more positively. Moreover, satisfaction with the learning environment was correlated with scholastic achievement. In addition, the more positively perceived learning environment could explain higher scholastic achievement in female students than in male students.

Introduction: A conducive learning environment is crucial to the effective delivery of curriculum and professional and social development of the students. This cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate students’ perception of the learning environment in private-sector pharmacy institutes of Pakistan. Methods: The overall learning environment and its various aspects were compared between different pharmacy institutes, year of study and gender. Questionnaires, based on the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) and demographic information, were completed by 527 undergraduate pharmacy students enrolled at six private-sector pharmacy institutes in Pakistan. Participants were selected by convenience sampling and the scores were compared across grouping variables identified via demographic information. Results: The total DREEM score across the sample was 116.10±25.39 (mean ± S.D), indicating an overall positive perception of the learning environment among students of the private-sector pharmacy institutes. Similarly, the sub- scale scores also reflected students’ positive perception of various aspects of the educational environment including learning, teachers, institutional atmosphere, academic self-perception and social self-perception across the sample. Total DREEM score and sub-scale scores were consistent between male and female students and across all years of Pharm. D. programme included in this study. Scores of the individual institutes reflect the prevalence of an overall conducive learning environment in the private-sector pharmacy institutes under study. A comparison of the total DREEM score and sub-scale scores of the individual institutes also reflects that learning environment of a few institutes, as perceived by their respective students, is significantly better than the others. Conclusion: The positive perception held by the students of private-sector pharmacy institutes in Pakistan is suggestive of the existence of a conducive learning environment that is contributory towards students’ learning of professional and social abilities.

Purpose: Educational environment has a significant impact on students' behavior, academic progress and quality of learning. The aim of this study was to evaluate the students’ perception of their learning environment in an Indian physiotherapy college and compare their perceptions in terms of demographic attributes and academic level. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 420 undergraduate physiotherapy students. The Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM), a 50-item, self-administered inventory was employed to assess the student’s perception of learning environment. It comprises of five domains: students’ perceptions of learning; students’ perceptions of teachers; students’ academic self-perceptions; students’ perceptions of atmosphere and students’ social self-perceptions. Descriptive statistics, t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to analyze data. P-value < 0.05 was considered as significant. Results: The mean DREEM score was 122.66 ± 17.39 reflecting a more of positive than negative educational environment in this institution. There was a significant difference in the overall DREEM score (p = 0.000) based on the year of study with highest mean score in first year (127.57 ± 13.81). Evaluating the sub-domains of perception, the students in all the years had a more positive perception of learning (29.22 ± 5.35), their perception of teachers moved in the right direction (26.52 ± 5.05), their academic self-perception was more on the positive side (21.23± 3.72), they had a more positive perception of atmosphere (28.56± 5.64) and their social self-perception could be graded as not too bad (17.13 ±3.08). No significant gender difference was noted for overall DREEM score and all domain scores. Conclusion: The present study revealed that all undergraduate physiotherapy students perceived their educational environment positively. However, some areas require remedial measures in order to enhance the educational experience. Advocating problem-based learning, student mentorship, counseling and workshops on teaching-learning for teachers might enable us to enrich our learning environment.

Background: Student’s positive perception towards the academic environment determines the quality of education. This study aimed at finding students’ perception on educational environ­ment of the postgraduate nursing programme of Nepal. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional design was conducted among 104 masters level nursing stu­dents from four selected nursing campuses under Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University. Enu­merative sampling technique was used to select the sample. Data were collected using validated standard tool Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) scale and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Most of the nursing students (81.7%) had positive level of perception on their educational environment and few had excellent perception. Total DREEM mean score was 134.37± 21 out of 200. Specifically, mean score of learning was 31.93 ± 5.1 out of 48, students’ perception of teachers was 30.02 ± 5.072 out of 44; students’ academic self-perception was 22.32 ± 3.54 out of 32; students’ perception of atmosphere was 32.26±5.1 out of 48 and mean score for students social self-perception was 17.82± 3.3 out of 28. Lower mean score < 2.0 was identified on teaching factual learning, oppor­tunities to memorize learning, supporting during stress, time management of programs, well prepara­tion for classes and student’s self-perception. Conclusions: The findings indicate more positive perception on educational environment among post­graduate nursing students. Still some aspects such as teaching factual learning, memorizing learning, supportive students during stress, and social environment need to be emphasized to enhance the students’ educational environment of post-graduate nursing program by the academic institution.

Abstract: Learning environment in any medical school is an important factor to determine the quality and success of curriculum. Students’ experience about their learning environment in medical education is related to their achievement, satisfaction, and success. It is important to get reguler feedback from the students on how they experience their learning environment as basis of strategic planning for futher improvement. This study was aimed to assess the educational environment of Sam Ratulangi University (Unsrat) undergraduate medical program based on the students’ perspection and also to identify the difference in perception between genders. This was an analytical study with a cross-sectional design conducted in October 2016 among undergraduate students of academic year 2016/2017. Data about the learning environment were obtained by using questionnaire of Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) and further analyzed with the Mann-Whitney test to identify the significance between genders. The total DREEM score indicated more positive than negative perception with rooms of improvement (127/200). The scores for all the five subscales of DREEM indicated a more positive perception. The overall mean DREEM score of the females (128,16) was higher compared to males (126,13) but not statistically significant. Conclusion: The medical students of Sam Ratulangi University showed a positive perception about their undergraduate educational environment. Continuous quality improvement and innovation are essentially needed.Keywords: educational environment, medical education, DREEM Abstrak: Lingkungan pembelajaran merupakan salah satu faktor penting dalam menentukan kualitas dan keberhasilan kurikulum pendidikan kedokteran. Persepsi mahasiswa terhadap lingkungan pembelajaran terbukti memengaruhi prestasi, kepuasan dan kesuksesan mahasiswa. Penting untuk mendapatkan umpan balik berkala dari mahasiswa tentang yang mereka rasakan terkait lingkungan pembelajaran sebagai dasar strategi perencanaan untuk peningkatan di masa depan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menilai lingkungan pembelajaran melalui persepsi mahasiswa dan mengidentifikasi perbedaan jenis kelamin di Fakultas kedokteran Universitas Sam Ratulangi (Unsrat) Manado. Jenis penelitian ialah analitik dengan desain potong lintang, dilakukan pada bulan Oktober 2016 terhadap mahasiswa TA 2016/2017. Data persepsi terhadap lingkungan pembelajaran didapat dari kuesioner Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM). Analisis data dilakukan menggunakan uji Mann-Whitney untuk mengidentifikasi perbedaan antara jenis kelamin. Hasil nilai total DREEM menunjukkan lingkungan yang lebih positif daripada negatif dengan ruang untuk perbaikan (127/200). Nilai skor dari kelima subskala DREEM mengindikasikan persepsi yang lebih positif. Nilai total rerata DREEM mahasiswa perempuan (128,16) lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan laki-laki (126,13) namun tidak terdapat perbedaan bermakna antara persepsi terhadap lingkungan pembelajaran berdasarkan jenis kelamin. Simpulan: Mahasiswa kedokteran Unsrat memiliki persepsi positif terhadap lingkungan pembelajaran. Peningkatan kualitas secara berkala dan inovasi merupakan hal yang esensial dalam pendidikaan kedokteran.Kata kunci: lingkungan pembelajaran, pendidikan kedokteran, DREEM

Introduction: A supportive and systematic design of academic learning environment has been important for transfer of learning in clinical context, can lead to positive outcomes for graduates and best prepares for professional life. The objective of this study was to find out the perception of nursing students toward academic learning environment. Methods: The descriptive, cross sectional study design was used among 172 proficiency certificate level (PCL) nursing students at Maharajgunj Nursing Campus, Kathmandu Nepal. The data were collected by using Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) Inventories with complete enumeration technique which was developed by Roff et al (1997). Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: Overall mean score of academic learning environment was found 142.78 out of 200 for 50 items which was in the ranged for ‘positive’ learning environments. The total mean score for perception of learning was 34.4 out of 48; for perception of teacher 30.7 out of 44; for academic self-perception 25 out of 32; for perception of atmosphere 33.3 out of 48; for social self-perceptions 19.3 out of 28. Mean scores indicated that students’ rated all five dimensions of the educational environment in this institution as an average. The significant differences were found between overall mean score; mean score of teachers, academic self-perception & social self perception of students and different academic year. Conclusion: The overall mean DREEM scores indicate a more positive academic learning environment. Although the overall learning environments score of this institution observe as an average, none of the items represents ‘excellent’ score or real positive academic learning environment.

Without having a reaction time, the pandemic has caused an unprecedented transformation in universities around the world, leading to a revolution from structured models anchored in the conception of transmission of training towards a teaching approach-learning saved thanks to the incorporation of technology. This study aims to verify whether the pandemic situation has influenced the digital competence self-perception of students. Comparing two groups during the academic years 2019/2020 and 2020/2021, the instrument used is the questionnaire for digital competence “DigCompEdu Check-In” for future teachers. After the educational intervention, group A (before COVID-19) presented higher self-perceptions of competence than group B (during COVID-19); the pandemic situation caused by COVID-19 has negatively influenced students’ self-perception of their digital skills in the pretest in the different dimensions under study. Before receiving the training, the group that did not experience the pandemic enjoyed a higher self-perception of their competencies than the group that experienced the pandemic. The data obtained indicate that the difference exists, and that it is statistically significant, and may be a consequence of the clear relationship between self-perception and the way in which students face reality through their personal and subjective vision.

Due to the recent emphasis on the importance of interprofessional education (IPE) in healthcare fields, interest in IPE introduction is increasing in South Korea. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in perceptions of medical, nursing, and pharmacy students regarding IPE. Also, the study aimed at identifying the priority rankings of educational needs by analyzing the differences between students’ perceptions of the importance level and the present level for each interprofessional competency. A cross-sectional study was carried out using a survey. A total of 1,500 questionnaires were distributed, of which 1,084 were returned (response rate, 72.3%). The participants were 559 medical, 393 nursing, and 96 pharmacy students. The questionnaire comprised items on the students’ perception of IPE and their interprofessional competency. The questionnaire comprised 12 items on their IPE perception and 9 items on their interprofessional competency. These items were developed by examining the content validity by medical educational specialists and conducting a factor analysis for verification. Data were analyzed using the t-test and ANOVA, and Borich’s formula was used to calculate the rank of educational needs.89.6% did not know the meaning of IPE. The difference in students’ perception of IPE was not significant by grade. Further, the level of IPE perception was higher for female than male students and for students who knew the meaning of IPE than those who did not. The nursing students’ perception of the importance, preference, and effectiveness of IPE was the highest, whereas medical students’ perception was the lowest. All students perceived their present level to be lower than the importance level for each interprofessional competency. Interprofessional communication skills (6.791) were highly necessary for students. These results will serve as baseline information for developing IPE programs in South Korea.

Objectives: The study aims to evaluate the barriers and perception towards spectacle wear among student population of University of Buraimi, Oman. Methods: This descriptive, questionnaire based, cross-sectional study was conducted between December 2017 and May 2018.  To evaluate participant’s barriers and perception towards spectacle wear, a self-designed, validated questionnaire prepared in English language, obtained responses from 170 a university student population within the Sultanate of Oman. Chi-square test was used to assess the association between the type of perception with the socio-demographic and refractive error related profiles of the participants. Results: All participants with inappropriate spectacle correction (61.82%) responded to the questionnaire.  Majority of them (73.5%, n = 125) were having their eyes examined for the first time. Only 28 (16.5%) were wearing spectacles. Nearly half of the participants (54%, n = 91) had positive attitude towards spectacle wear, followed by negative (36%, n = 62) and neutral perception (10%, n = 17). Participants from a health science background had a higher positive perception towards spectacle wear compared to the non-medical study majors (P = 0.012). The difference in the perception scores between myopic and hypermetropic refractive error group was statistically insignificant (P = 0.882). Conclusion: A majority of the participants were having inappropriate spectacle corrections and did not undergo any prior ocular examinations. Very few participants were wearing spectacles, however, it was inappropriate concerning their current refractive status. The other reasons for spectacle non-wear were, ordering of new spectacles, lost them, or were broken. Nearly half of the participants had positive perceptions towards spectacle wear. The positive perception was higher among students with health-related majors. The study stresses to extend the current school eye health initiative within the region to the university level. A holistic eye health promotional approach integrating students, teachers, and parents can help in improving spectacle wear within the population.
