Abstract Objectives: Trends in serum lipids among teenagers would be crucial predictors of potential cardiovascular disease in adults. We aimed to investigate the trends in lipid profiles and related factors, including obesity, smoking, exercise, alcohol use, and total fat intakes in Korean adolescents from 2007 to 2018. Methods: We analyzed 5,967 participants aged 12–19 yrs from the Korea NHANES 2007–2018. Fasting total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides (TG) levels were measured. Results: All kinds of lipid profiles, except TG, showed increasing trends from 2007 to 2018 (P<0.01). Nevertheless, the prevalence of dyslipidemia showed a trend of decreasing in boys (from 33.3 to 26.6%; P=0.002) and maintained in girls (from 28.4 to 30.2%; P=0.465), mainly due to a substantial decrease in hypo-HDL-cholesterolemia (9% reduction in boys, 5% reduction in girls). This occurred amid an increasing trend of central obesity in boys (P<0.001). In lifestyle factors, there were no significant changes in alcohol use and muscle-strengthening exercise, while a substantial decrease in smoking rate was observed. A favorable effect of muscle-strengthening exercise on both TG and HDL-C and an unfavorable impact of smoking on HDL-C were observed. Alcohol use was associated with higher HDL-C in both genders, but it showed opposite associations with TG between boys (unfavorable) and girls (favorable). Regarding dietary factors, there were increasing trends in total fat intakes and the percentage of energy supply from total dietary fat (〔total fat (%E)〕 in both genders. In boys, an increase in total fat (%E) was related to the higher HDL-C in normal-weight subjects (P<0.01 in both genders); however, it was associated with higher LDL-C in overweight girls (P=0.001). Conclusions: Increases in fat intakes and a decline in smoking rates appeared to have positively impacted HDL-C in Korean adolescents over the past 12 years. We confirmed a rise in fat intakes was linked with the increase in LDL-C among overweight adolescents. Therefore, close monitoring for the dyslipidemia prevalence is essential in Korean adolescents whose obesity prevalence is on the rise.

Abstract Adults with short stature have been previously reported to have increased risk of cardiovascular events and hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia. We aimed to assess the association between height and lipid profiles among Korean adolescents and adults. We analyzed data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2015, from 37,889 individuals (aged 12–59 years). In adolescents, total cholesterol (TC) and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels had profound associations with height in both boys and girls, while high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels had an inverse association with height only in boys. Height was inversely associated with TC, triglycerides (TG), and LDL-C concentrations in men and women and positively correlated with HDL-C concentration in women. In boys, the odds ratios (ORs) for hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia were higher for shorter subjects (ORs = 2.38~7.01), while only the OR of hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia was significantly higher in girls with short stature (OR = 3.12). In adults, the ORs for hypercholesterolemia, hypo-HDL-cholesterolemia, and hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia were significantly higher in short subjects than in tall subjects after controlling for covariates (ORs = 1.50~2.61). Also, short men showed significantly higher ORs for hypertriglyceridemia (OR = 1.85) than tall men. Short stature was significantly associated with adverse lipid profiles in both adolescents and adults.

Introduction Some studies have reported the association between maternal serum lipid profile abnormalities and pre-eclampsia. However, many studies have reported controversial results. Hence, this systematic review and meta-analysis was planned to generate summarized evidence on the association between maternal serum lipid profiles and pre-eclampsia in African women. Methods Four electronic databases such as; PubMed, Hinari, Google Scholar, and African Journals Online were searched for studies published in English. Joanna Briggs Institute Meta-Analysis of Statistics Assessment and Review Instrument and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale were used for data extraction and quality assessment of the included studies. The meta- regression analysis was performed by Stata 14 software. The standardized mean difference (SMD) values of lipid profiles were computed to assess their association with pre-eclampsia at 95% CI. Results In this review a total of 15 observational studies were included. The mean values of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein- cholesterol (LDL-c) and very low density lipoprotein- cholesterol (VLDL-c) were significantly higher in pre-eclamptic women as compared with normotensive pregnant women (TG = 229.61±88.27 and 147.00 ± 40.47, TC = 221.46 ± 45.90 and 189.67 ± 39.18, LDL = 133.92 ± 38.77 and 112.41 ± 36.08, VLDL = 41.44 ± 19.68 and 26.64 ± 7.87), respectively. The serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) level was lower, but it is not statistically significant (HDL-c = 51.02 ± 16.01 and 61.80 ± 25.63) in pre-eclamptic women as compared with controls. The pooled standardized mean difference (SMD) of TG, TC, LDL-C and VLDL-C were significantly increased in pre-eclamptic women as compared with normotensive pregnant women with the SMD of (TG = 1.65 (1.10, 2.21), TC = 0.84 (0.40, 1.29), LDL-C = 0.95 (0.46, 1.45) and VLDL-C = 1.27 (0.72, 1.81)) at 95% CI, respectively, but the pooled SMD of HDL-cholesterol was decreased in pre-eclamptic women as compared with normotensive pregnant women (SMD = -0.91 (95% CI: -1.43, -0.39). Conclusions In this review, the maternal serum levels of TG, TC, LDL-c and VLDL-c were significantly associated with the risk of preeclampsia. However, HDL- cholesterol was not significantly associated but it was lower in pre-eclamptic women. Further, large scale prospective studies should verify these outcomes and it is recommended that lipid profiles should be included as a routine diagnostic test for pre-eclamptic women.

Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was the best indicator of glycemic control, which did not show the dynamic relationship between glycemic control and lipid profiles. In order to guide the health management of Type 2 diabetes (T2D), we assessed the levels of lipid profiles and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and displayed the relationship between FPG control and lipid profiles. We conducted a cross-sectional study that included 5822 participants. Descriptive statistics were conducted according to gender and glycemic status respectively. Comparisons for the control of lipid profiles were conducted according to glycemic control. Four logistic regression models were generated to analyze the relationship between lipid profiles and glycemic control according to different confounding factors. The metabolic control percentage of FPG, triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) was 27.50%, 73.10%, 28.10%, 64.20% and 44.80% respectively. In the fourth model with the most confounding factors, the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of TG, TC, LDL-C and HDL-C were 0.989 (0.935, 1.046), 0.862 (0.823, 0.903), 0.987 (0.920, 1.060) and 2.173 (1.761, 2.683). TC and HDL-C were statistically significant, and TG and LDL-C were not statistically significant with adjustment for different confounding factors. In conclusion, FPG was significantly associated with HDL and TC and was not associated with LDL and TG. Our findings suggested that TC and HDL should be focused on in the process of T2D health management.

Abstract Background We aimed to investigate the association of breastfeeding on postpartum glucose levels and lipid profiles in women diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and women without GDM. Methods We performed a secondary analysis of a cohort study of 243 women, 159 women with GDM and 84 normally glucose tolerant women between 2012 and 2017. At approximately 6–10 weeks postpartum, we measured fasting blood glucose and plasma lipid levels. Breastfeeding behaviour was self-defined as exclusive breastfeeding or not exclusive breastfeeding. Results The mean (SD) glucose in the group of women who breastfed exclusively was 4.6 (0.49) mmol/L, compared to 4.9 (0.58) mmol/L (95% CI 0.45, 0.15, p <  0.001) among women who did not exclusively breastfeed. Among women with GDM, the reduction in fasting glucose in women who were breastfeeding was 0.22 mmol/L (95% CI 0.39, 0.05, p = 0.004), and in women who were not GDM, the reduction was 0.14 mmol/L (95% CI 0.37, 0.09, p = 0.24,). After adjustment for GDM status in pregnancy, maternal body mass index (BMI), maternal age and ethnicity, and exclusive breastfeeding was associated with a decreased fasting glucose of 0.19 (95% CI 0.318, 0.061, p = 0.004). After similar adjustment, there was no significant difference in triglycerides, high density lipoprotein cholesterol or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol between women who were breastfeeding and women who were not breastfeeding. Conclusions Breastfeeding is associated with a reduction in fasting glucose levels postpartum, but not maternal lipid profile. Breastfeeding may play a role in reducing glucose intolerance in women who have had GDM.

The effects of dietary omega-6 (n-6) to omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) ratios on growth performance, digestibility, blood lipid profiles, fecal microbial counts, and meat quality in finishing pigs were examined by using linseed and fish oil. A total of 140 crossbred finishing pigs [(Landrace × Yorkshire) × Duroc] were used in a 10 wk trial. Pigs were blocked based on body weight (BW) and sex and randomly allotted to four dietary treatments formulated to have n-6/n-3 ratios of 5/1, 10/1, 15/1, and 17/1 (control). Throughout the experiment, BW, average daily gain, and average daily feed intake were significantly (P < 0.05) increased with a decreased ratio of n-6/n-3 PUFA. Energy digestibility and fecal Lactobacillus count showed a linear (P < 0.05) increase in week 10. The high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and blood triglyceride concentrations increased (P < 0.1) during week 10. However, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol was reduced (P < 0.05) linearly during week 5 and week 10 with a reduction in dietary n-6/n-3 ratio. This study provides a basis for future research on altering n-6/n-3 ratio by using linseed oil and refined fish oil in finishing pigs.

Background. Understanding whether the preceding low lipid profile leads to active tuberculosis (TB) or active TB leads to low lipid profile is crucial.Methods. Lipid profile concentrations were determined from 159 study participants composed of 93 active TB patients [44 HIV coinfected (HIV+TB+) and 49 HIV negative (HIV−TB+)], 41 tuberculin skin test (TST) positive cases [17 HIV coinfected (HIV+TST+) and 24 HIV negative (HIV−TST+)], and 25 healthy controls (HIV−TST−). Cobas Integra 400 Plus was used to determine lipid profiles concentration level.Results. The concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in HIV−TB+ patients were significantly lower compared to HIV−TST+ and to HIV−TST− individuals. Similarly, the concentrations of the TC, LDL-C, and HDL-C in HIV+TB+ were significantly lower compared to HIV−TB+ patients. After the 6 months of anti-TB treatment (ATT), the concentration levels of TC, LDL-C, and HDL-C in HIV−TB+ patients were higher compared to the baseline concentration levels, while they were not significantly different compared to that of HIV−TST+ concentration.Conclusion. The low concentration of lipid profiles in TB patients may be a consequence of the disease and significantly increased in TB patients after treatment.

Abstract Introduction. Inflammatory and coagulation factors are among the various factors that are involved in the development of cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of eight weeks of combined training (endurance-intermittent resistance and endurance-continuous resistance) on coagulation, fibrinolytic and lipid profiles of overweight women. Material and Methods. This was a quasi-experimental study of 36 overweight women, who were divided into three groups of endurance-intermittent resistance training (n = 12), endurance-continuous resistance training (n = 12) and control (n = 12). The training was performed during eight weeks, three times a week, and each session lasted for 80 to 90 minutes. Blood samples were analyzed for the concentrations of coagulation, fibrinolytic and lipid profiles before and after the completion of the training program. Results. Fibrinogen levels, prothrombin time (PT), partial thromboplastin time (PTT) and platelet count decreased significantly at the end of the training in both intervention groups. However, serum levels of D-dimer increased significantly in both training groups. Also, the levels of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) decreased significantly, while the levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) increased significantly. Conclusions. Combined exercise improved most coagulation factors and lipid profiles at the end of the training period. Therefore, the results of our research suggest that a combined exercise program can improve the health of overweight women.

Abstract Background: Current studies support nontraditional lipid profiles [total cholesterol (TC)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio, triglyceride (TG)/HDL-C ratio, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL -C)/HDL-C ratio, non-HDL-C] as reliable indicators of cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes. However, whether nontraditional lipid profiles can be used as reliable markers for hyperuricemia (HUA) remains unclear due to limited research. The present study investigated the relationship of nontraditional lipid profiles with HUA in hypertensive patients.Methods: We analyzed data from 13,721 Chinese hypertensive population untreated with lipid-lowering drugs. The relationship between non-traditional lipid profiles and HUA was examined by multivariate logistic regression analysis and smooth curve fitting (penalized spline method).Results: The results showed that there were positive associations of TC/HDL-C ratio, TG/HDL-C ratio, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, and non-HDL-C with HUA, respectively (all P <0.001). Furthermore, nontraditional lipid profiles were converted from continuous variables to tertiles. Compared with lowest tertile, the multivariate adjusted ORs (95% CI) of TC/HDL-C ratio, TG/HDL-C ratio, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio and non-HDL-C in highest tertile were 1.79 (1.62, 1.99), 2.09 (1.88, 2.32), 1.67 (1.51, 1.86), 1.93 (1.74, 2.13), respectively (all P <0.001).Conclusions: In Chinese hypertensive population, there were positive associations between nontraditional lipid profiles (TC/HDL-C ratio, TG/HDL-C ratio, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, and non-HDL-C) and HUA. Our findings further expand the scope of application of nontraditional lipid profiles. These novel and important results suggest that nontraditional lipid profiles can be used as potential and valuable indicators of HUA, and provide a new strategy for the prevention and treatment of HUA.

Abstract Background: Data concerning the association between nontraditional lipid profiles [total cholesterol (TC)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio, triglyceride (TG)/HDL-C ratio, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)/HDL-C ratio, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C)] and the risk of peripheral artery disease (PAD) are limited. We aimed to evaluate the association between nontraditional lipid indices and the risk of PAD in Chinese hypertensive population.Methods: In the cross-sectional study, a total of 10,900 adults with hypertension were enrolled. PAD was defined as ankle-brachial index < 0.9. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the association between nontraditional lipid profiles and PAD. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was also used. Results: All nontraditional lipid profiles were independently and positively associated with the prevalence of PAD in a dose response fashion. In multivariable models, we observed a 37%, 14%, 40%, and 24% higher risk for PAD with each SD increment in TC/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C ratios, and non-HDL-C levels, respectively. Compared with the lowest tertile, the multivariate-adjusted ORs (95% CI) were 1.77 (1.31, 2.40), 1.71 (1.25, 2.34), 2.03 (1.50, 2.74), 1.70 (1.25, 2.31) for the highest tertile of TC/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C ratios, and non-HDL-C, respectively. Furthermore, the area under the curves (AUCs) for LDL-C/HDL-C ratio (0.548; 95% CI, 0.516-0.581) and TC/HDL-C ratio (0.547; 95% CI, 0.514-0.579) were significantly larger than those for TG/HDL-C ratio (0.508; 95% CI, 0.461-0.523) and non-HDL-C (0.519; 95% CI, 0.486-0.552).Conclusions: All nontraditional lipid profiles were positively associated with PAD in Chinese adults with hypertension, among which LDL-C/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C ratio were better for predicting PAD.Trial registration: CHiCTR, ChiCTR1800017274.
