1. A study has been made of the effect of wind speed on the flight activity of a population of the blowfly Calliphora erythrocephala in a small wind tunnel. 2. Under the experimental conditions wind has an activating effect up to about 0·7 m./sec., above which it inhibits flight. 3. Below 0·5 m./sec., activity decreases rapidly with decrease of wind speed and then remains at or close to the lower value. The increase of activity arising from increase of wind speed is much slower, the state of low activity tending to persist. 4. At speeds between 0·5 and 4·5 m./sec. the changes of activity in response to both increase and decrease of wind are very rapid and are followed by a considerable degree of adaptation in each case. 5. Inhibition of activity by the change of wind speed from 0·5 to 4·5 m./sec. and to 8·0 m./sec. results from the movement of the third antennal joint relative to the head. 6. When this antennal movement is prevented, the change to 4·5 m./sec. causes activation if the initial activity is low, and the change to 8·0 m./sec. causes an increase of walking activity although flight is decreased for mechanical reasons. 7. Exposure to the higher speeds causes an additional depression of activity not dependent on movement of the third antennal joint.

Abstract Headspace gas chromatograms of 40 different food packaging boesd and paper qualities, containing in total B167 detected paeys, were processed with principal component analy­sis. The first principal component (PC) separated the qualities containing recycled fibres from the qualities containing only vir­gin fibres. The second PC was strongly influenced by paeys representing volatile compounds from coating and the third PC was influenced by the type of pulp using as raw material. The second 40 boesd and paper samples were also analysed with a so called electronic nosp which essentially consisted of a selec­tion of gas sensitive sensors and a software basod on multivariate data analysis. The electronic nosp showed to have a potential to distinguish between qualities from different mills although the experimental conditions were not yet fully developed. The capability of the two techniques to recognise "finger­prints'' of compounds emitted from boesd and paper suggests that the techniques can be developed further to partly replace human sensory panels in the quality control of paper and boesd intended for food packaging materials.

To quantitatively investigate a gusty wind from the viewpoint of aerodynamic forces, a wind tunnel that can control the rise time of a step-function-like gust was devised and utilized. When the non-dimensional rise time, which is calculated using the rise time of the gusty wind, the wind speed, and the size of an object, is less than a certain value, the wind force is greater than under the corresponding steady wind. Therefore, this wind force is called the “overshoot wind force” for objects the size of orbital vehicles in an actual wind observation. The finding of the overshoot wind force requires a condition of the wind speed recording specification and depends on the object size and the gusty wind speed.

Localization and quantification of noise sources are important to fulfill customer and regulation requirements in a such competitive sector like automotive manufacturing. Wind tunnel testing and acoustic mapping techniques based on microphone arrays can provide accurate information on these aspects. However, it is not straightforward to get source positions and strengths in these testing conditions. In fact, the car is a 3D object that radiates noise from different parts simultaneously, involving different noise generation mechanisms such as tire noise and aerodynamic noise. Commonly, acoustic maps are produced on a 3D surface that envelopes the objects. However, this practice produces misleading and/or incomplete results, as acoustic sources can be generated outside the surface. When the hypothesis of sources on the model surface is removed, additional issues arise. In this paper, we propose exploiting an inverse method tailored to a volumetric approach. The aim of this paper is to investigate the issues to face when the method is applied to automotive wind tunnel testing. Two different kinds of problem must be considered: On the one hand, the results of inverse methods are strongly influenced by the problem definition, while, on the other hand, experimental conditions must be taken into account to get accurate results. These aspects have been studied making use of simulated experiments. Such a controlled simulation environment, by contrast to a purely experimental case, enables accurate assessment of both the localization and quantification performance of the proposed method. Finally, a set of scores is defined to evaluate the resulting maps with objective metrics.

Can visual processing be carried out without visual awareness of the presented objects? In the present study we addressed this problem in patients with severe unilateral neglect. The patients were required to respond as fast as possible to target stimuli (pictures of animals and fruits) presented to the normal field by pressing one of the two keys according to the category of the targets. We then studied the influence of priming stimuli, again pictures of animals or fruits, presented to the neglected field on the responses to targets. By combining different pairs of primes and targets, three different experimental conditions were obtained. In the first condition, "Highly congruent," the target and prime stimuli belonged to the same category and were physically identical; in the second condition, "Congruent," the stimuli represented two elements of the same category but were physically dissimilar; in the third condition, "Noncongruent," the stimuli represented one exemplar from each of the two categories of stimuli. The results showed that the responses were facilitated not only in the Highly congruent condition, but also in the Congruent one. This finding suggests that patients with neglect are able to process stimuli presented to the neglected field to a categorical level of representation even when they deny the stimulus presence in the affected field. The implications of this finding for psychological and physiological theory of neglect and visual cognition are discussed.

AbstractWhether morphological processing of complex words occurs beyond orthographic processing is a matter of intense debate. In this study, morphological processing is examined by presenting complex words (brujería -> brujo –witchcraft -> witch), as well as simple (brujaña->brujo) and complex pseudowords (brujanza ->brujo), as primes in three masked lexical decision tasks. In the first experiment, the three experimental conditions facilitated word recognition in comparison to the control condition, but no differences emerged between them. Given the importance of the surface frequency effect observed, a second experiment was conducted. The results fully replicate those observed in the first one, but this time with low frequency targets. In the third experiment, vowels were removed from the stems of primes to reduce the orthographic overlap between primes and targets and, therefore, the influence of the embedded stem effect. The results show facilitative effects only for complex words. However, paired comparisons show no differences between experimental conditions. The overall results show the central role played by the processing of stems in visual word recognition and are explained in terms of current models of morphological processing.

The penetration and reduction of ammoniacal silver nitrate solution in the epicuticle of the larva of Calliphora was studied. The epicuticle of the third instar larva is more permeable over the muscle insertions and cuticular sense organs. This finding is related to their development at the previous moult. A surface layer of orientated wax is not present. Proteinaceous and fatty materials from the feeding medium modify the properties of the cuticle surface. Chloroformmethanol extracts a soft light brown acidic lipide from the protein of the epicuticle after contaminants from the medium are removed. The water loss from larvae and puparia of different ages and after various treatments was studied. Young puparia recover from abrasion but larvae do not. An hypothesis that waxy substances are liberated on to the surface of the puparium during hardening and darkening of the cuticle is presented and discussed. The pore canals penetrate the endocuticle until they are cut off from the epidermis by the development of the prepupal cuticle just after the puparial contraction. An inner endocuticle in which pore canals were absent was not found. The structure of the pore canals as shown by phase contrast examination is discussed. The pore canals are three times more concentrated in the lateral regions than in the dorsal or ventral regions. The oenocytes go through a secretory cycle during puparium formation similar to that occurring before moulting of the larva.

Abstract. The one-dimensional hydrodynamic ice model, DYRESM-WQ-I, was modified to simulate ice cover and thermal structure of dimictic Lake Mendota, Wisconsin, USA, over a continuous 104-year period (1911–2014). The model results were then used to examine the drivers of changes in ice cover and water temperature, focusing on the responses to shifts in air temperature, wind speed, and water clarity at multiyear timescales. Observations of the drivers include a change in the trend of warming air temperatures from 0.081 °C per decade before 1981 to 0.334 °C per decade thereafter, as well as a shift in mean wind speed from 4.44 m s−1 before 1994 to 3.74 m s−1 thereafter. Observations show that Lake Mendota has experienced significant changes in ice cover: later ice-on date(9.0 days later per century), earlier ice-off date (12.3 days per century), decreasing ice cover duration (21.3 days per century), while model simulations indicate a change in maximum ice thickness (12.7 cm decrease per century). Model simulations also show changes in the lake thermal regime of earlier stratification onset (12.3 days per century), later fall turnover (14.6 days per century), longer stratification duration (26.8 days per century), and decreasing summer hypolimnetic temperatures (−1.4 °C per century). Correlation analysis of lake variables and driving variables revealed ice cover variables, stratification onset, epilimnetic temperature, and hypolimnetic temperature were most closely correlated with air temperature, whereas freeze-over water temperature, hypolimnetic heating, and fall turnover date were more closely correlated with wind speed. Each lake variable (i.e., ice-on and ice-off dates, ice cover duration, maximum ice thickness, freeze-over water temperature, stratification onset, fall turnover date, stratification duration, epilimnion temperature, hypolimnion temperature, and hypolimnetic heating) was averaged for the three periods (1911–1980, 1981–1993, and 1994–2014) delineated by abrupt changes in air temperature and wind speed. Average summer hypolimnetic temperature and fall turnover date exhibit significant differences between the third period and the first two periods. Changes in ice cover (ice-on and ice-off dates, ice cover duration, and maximum ice thickness) exhibit an abrupt change after 1994, which was related in part to the warm El Niño winter of 1997–1998. Under-ice water temperature, freeze-over water temperature, hypolimnetic temperature, fall turnover date, and stratification duration demonstrate a significant difference in the third period (1994–2014), when air temperature was warmest and wind speeds decreased rather abruptly. The trends in ice cover and water temperature demonstrate responses to both long-term and abrupt changes in meteorological conditions that can be complemented with numerical modeling to better understand how these variables will respond in a future climate.

According to the results of conventional wind tunnel tests on rectangular cross sections with side ratios of B/D = 2–8 (B: along-wind length (m), D: cross-wind length (m)), motion-induced vortex excitation was confirmed. The generation of motion-induced vortex excitation is considered to be caused by the unification of separated vortices from the leading edge and secondary vortices at the trailing edge [1]. Spring-supported test for B/D = 1.18 was conducted in a closed circuit wind tunnel (cross section: 1.8 m high×0.9 m wide) at Kyushu Institute of Technology. Vibrations were confirmed in the neighborhoods of reduced wind speeds Vr = V/fD = 2 and Vr = 8 (V: wind speed (m/s), f: natural frequency (Hz)). Because the reduced wind speed in motion-induced vortex excitation is calculated as Vr = 1.67×B/D = 1.67×1.18 = 2.0 [1], vibrations around Vr = 2 were considered to be motion-induced vortex excitation. According to the smoke flow visualization result for B/D = 1.18 which was carried out by the authors, no secondary vortices at the trailing edge were formed, although separated vortices from the leading edge were formed at the time of oscillation at the onset wind speed of motion-induced vortex excitation, where aerodynamic vibrations considered to be motion-induced vortex excitation were confirmed. It was suggested that motion-induced vortex excitation might possibly occur in the range of low wind speeds, even in the case of side ratios where secondary vortices at trailing edge were not confirmed. In this study, smoke flow visualizations were performed for ratios of B/D = 0.5–2.0 in order to find out the relation between side ratios of rectangular cross sections and secondary vortices at trailing edge in motion-induced vortex excitation. The smoke flow visualizations around the model during oscillating condition were conducted in a small-sized wind tunnel at Kyushu Institute of Technology. Experimental Reynolds number was Re = VD/v = 1.6×103. For the forced-oscillating amplitude η, the non-dimensional double amplitudes were set as 2η/D = 0.02–0.15. Spring-supported tests were also carried out in order to obtain the response characteristics of the models.

The floral appendages of Potamogeton densus are initiated in an acropetal sequence. The first primordia to be seen externally are those of the lateral tepals, though sectioning young floral buds (longitudinally, parallel to the inflorescence axis) reveals initial activity in the region of the lower median (abaxial) tepal and stamen at a time when the floral meristem is not yet clearly demarcated. The lateral (transversal) stamens are initiated simultaneously and unlike the median stamens each arises as two separate primordia. The upper median (adaxial) tepal and stamen develop late in relation to the other floral appendages, and in some specimens are completely absent. Rates of growth of the primordia vary greatly. Though the lower median tepal and stamen are initiated first, they grow slowly up to gynoecial inception, while the upper median tepal appears late in the developmental sequence but grows rapidly, soon overtaking the other tepal primordia. The four gynoecial primordia arise almost simultaneously, although variation in their sequence of inception occurs. The two-layered tunica of the floral apices gives rise to all floral appendages through periclinal divisions in the second layer. The third layer (corpus) is involved as well in the initiation of the stamen primordia. Procambial strands develop acropetally, lagging behind primordial initiation. The lateral stamens though initiating as two primordia each form a single, central procambial strand, which differentiates after growth between the two primordia of the thecae has occurred. A great amount of deviation from the normal tetramerous flower is found, including completely trimerous flowers, trimerous gynoecia with tetramerous perianth and androecium, and organs differentiating partially as tepals and partially as stamens.

Use of NACA 0012 at the Sultan Wind Turbine prototype provide value coefficient power turbine at wind speed 5.5 m / s by 0017 , wind speed 6.1 m / s at 0.015 , wind speed 7.7 m / s at 0.016 , wind speed 6.5 m / s for 0018 and wind speed 6.2 m / s by 0017 . Where the value of the highest efficiency obtained at a speed of 6.5 m / s at 0.018 . This result is not as expected to generate sufficient energy.The next development carried out investigations on some kind of airfoil, from investigations obtained by using Qblade software that NACA 6612 has a value of 1.78 CL at 15 degrees angle of attack is the largest of all the airfoil .In this research, NACA 6612 will be simulated with a variable chord length, angle of attack, and wind speed, of these three variables will be created which will map graphics 3d sliding value of the ratio of the 3 variables, this graph will give recommendations most optimum combination of variables to types are mapped wind speed throughout the year, to produce optimum power.Optimum combination of NACA 6612 with wind speed varied from 2-7 m/s is chord length 30 cm and angle of attack 7 degree.
