Second Paper: Some Aspects of the Design and Operation of the Three-Wheeled Road Roller

Following an introduction of general historic nature dealing with the evolution of the modern road roller from the first practicable steam roller of 100 years ago, the paper is confined generally to an examination of the mechanical engineering content and operational requirements of this item of engineering plant universally employed in today's surface consolidation, compaction and finishing processes. The mechanical constitution of the road roller is examined with particular reference to recent developments in design concerning clutches, mechanical, hydrokinetic and hydrostatic transmissions, steering, brakes, bearings and hydraulic systems, all of which are in close accord with modern automotive design practice. Curves illustrate the basic co-ordination requirements of engine/torque converter combination, the torque converter and hydrostatic unit output performance characteristics and vehicle road performance (gradient/ mile/h) with the mechanical ‘stepped’ transmission, the overlapping torque converter transmission and infinite ratio ‘stepless’ hydrostatic system. Additional equipment fitted to the roller for performing operations other than surface rolling is also considered together with features designed to produce maximum operational efficiency. Modern design trends to satisfy present-day demands of maximum machine utilization with minimum servicing and maintenance ‘down-times’ are considered with particular reference to lubrication and accessibility for servicing. Conclusions to past and present are given in the author's views on probable future trends in design and construction.

With the emergence of nanotechnology, new methods have been developed for engineering various nanoparticles for biomedical applications. Nanotheranostics is a burgeoning research field with tremendous prospects for the improvement of diagnosis and treatment of various cancers. However, the development of biocompatible and efficient drug/gene delivery theranostic systems still remains a challenge. Green synthetic approach of nanoparticles with low capital and operating expenses, reduced environmental pollution and better biocompatibility and stability is a latest and novel field, which is advantageous over chemical or physical nanoparticle synthesis methods. In this article, we summarize the recent research progresses related to green synthesized nanoparticles for cancer theranostic applications, and we also conclude with a look at the current challenges and insight into the future directions based on recent developments in these areas.

We are interested in evaluating the state of drivers to determine whether they are attentive to the road or not by using motion sensor data collected from car driving experiments. That is, our goal is to design a predictive model that can estimate the state of drivers given the data collected from motion sensors. For that purpose, we leverage recent developments in topological data analysis (TDA) to analyze and transform the data coming from sensor time series and build a machine learning model based on the topological features extracted with the TDA. We provide some experiments showing that our model proves to be accurate in the identification of the state of the user, predicting whether they are relaxed or tense.

AbstractKeeping up with ever more detailed observations, Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) explosion models have seen a brisk development over the past years. The aim is to construct a self-consistent picture of the physical processes in order to gain the predictive power necessary to answer questions arising from the application of SNe Ia as cosmological distance indicators. We review recent developments in modeling these objects focusing on three-dimensional simulations.

AbstractRecent developments in the engineering industry have created a demand for advanced materials with superior mechanical properties and high-quality surface finishes. Some of the conventional finishing methods such as lapping, grinding, honing, and polishing are now being replaced by non-conventional finishing processes. Magnetic Abrasive Finishing (MAF) is a non-conventional superfinishing process in which magnetic abrasive particles interact with a magnetic field in the finishing zone to remove materials to achieve very high surface finishing and deburring simultaneously. In this review paper, the working principles, processing parameters, and current limitations for the MAF process are examined via reviewing important work in the literature. Additionally, future developments of the MAF process are discussed.

Brake systems fitted to current production vehicles are not the relativity straightforward hydraulic systems that many people expect. Rather they have evolved into complex systems which are on their own deliberately capable of affecting the behaviour of a vehicle. Crucially they depend on computers, software and electronic sensors to allow them to form a model of how the vehicle is expected to behave on the road and how it is actually behaving. Like any artefact they can, and do fail. This paper provides a high-level overview of the braking systems currently in place, how these systems act and present some examples of how they have failed in practice. With the incidence and impact of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and its clinical manifestations still rising, therapeutic options that target the causal mechanisms of this disorder are highly desired. Since the CANTOS trial (Canakinumab Antiinflammatory Thrombosis Outcome Study) has demonstrated that lowering inflammation can be beneficial, focusing on mechanisms underlying inflammation, for example, leukocyte recruitment, is feasible. Being key orchestrators of leukocyte trafficking, chemokines have not lost their attractiveness as therapeutic targets, despite the difficult road to drug approval thus far. Still, innovative therapeutic approaches are being developed, paving the road towards the first chemokine-based therapeutic against inflammation. In this overview, recent developments for chemokines and for the chemokine-like factor MIF (macrophage migration inhibitory factor) will be discussed.

This article discusses recent developments in the UN climate change negotiations in light of the Bonn Climate Change Conference in May 2012. It highlights the Bonn meeting as the first opportunity to assess the influence on the UNFCCC process of the Durban Package and the new Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action. It argues that the main impression from the Bonn meeting is that the Durban outcome has indeed affected the dynamics of the UNFCCC negotiations and holds potential for far-reaching changes. Provided that all goes well, the combination of new bodies and processes created in Cancun and Durban, the forthcoming Fifth Assessment Report by the IPCC, and the likely public pressure following its release could open a new chapter in the UNFCCC process and lead to a more effective multilateral response to the climate change challenge. Still, the combination of a palpable rift within G-77/China and traditional divides between developed and developing countries on issues such as finance and technology means that the road ahead is likely to be a difficult one.

Precision surface finishing plays an important role in product quality owing to its direct effects on product appearance. As a result, automated precision surface finishing processes (APSFPs) are key technologies for industrial products and molds for forming and shaping processes. APSFPs can be divided into three main categories, namely, mechanical processes, electrochemical processes, and high energy beam processes. The objective of this special issue is to collect the cutting-edge research works focused on APSFPs. Although the long‐term plan is not completely formed, this paper aims to give an insight into current thinking.Originality/valueThe paper spells out the improvement strategy that the BL has adopted for document supply in the light of the worldwide decline.
