Ovarian and thyroid activity was studied in 10 ewes of Lacuane breed during one year. Ewes were maintained separately from rams and were fed. The aim of the study was to determine the duration of the anestrus period. Blood samples were collected weekly for the determination of progesterone levels. Thyroxine levels were also determined. Progesterone concentrations > 1 ng/ml were considered as indicative of ovulation, whereas levels between 0.5-0.9 ng/ml as indicative of follicle luteinizations or short lived corpus luteum. Two ewes showed persistent corpus luteum which regressed in deep anestrus period. The first ovulation occurred on 18th August ±10 days. The duration of the breeding season (the interval from the first to the last ovulation) was estimated to be 158 ± 8 days and the number of ovarian cycles during this period was 9.0 ± 0.6 per ewe. A significant correlation was observed between the time of the last ovulation and the duration of the breeding season, (Y=l4l.4+0.96X, r2 = 0.71, P<0.01). Serum thyroxine levels in every fifteen days samples fluctuate from 47 ± 4 during the first half of August to 82 ± 5 during the second half of December. Mean thyroxine levels during the time of increasing daylength (23rd December to 22nd  June) were 71.2 ± 2 ng/ml and during that of decreasing daylength (23rd June to 22nd December) 59.4 ± 3 ng/ml, (p<0.001). In conclusion, this study showed that the ewes of the Lacaune breed exhibit a long anestrous period compared to the indigenous Greek breeds. Hormonal control of estrus is necessary for the out-of season lambing. Finally, thyroid function shows a significant seasonality, as has been demonstrated in all other breeds of sheep studied so far.

AbstractThe effect of lambing date on the subsequent onset and duration of ovarian cyclicity in Mule (Bluefaced Leicester × Scottish Blackface) ewes was investigated. Nineteen ewes which had lambed in January (16 January 1993 (s.e. 3 days)) and been weaned in February-March and 22 comparable ewes which had lambed in May (14 May 1993 (s.e. 2 days)) and been weaned on 23 August were maintained at pasture as two isolated groups. A raddled vasectomized ram was continually present with each group from 14 July 1993 to 26 May 1994 and marked (oestrous) ewes were recorded twice weekly. Ovarian activity was assessed by measuring peripheral progesterone concentrations in blood samples collected twice weekly and by laparoscopic viewing of the ovaries of all ewes during October, January and March. The onset and duration of ovarian activity were significantly affected by the previous lambing date. For January and May lambing ewes, mean dates of onset were 5 September 1993 (s.e. 2 days) v. 25 September 1993 (s.e. 4 days) (P < 0·001) and of cessation were 5 April 1994 (s.e. 5 days) v. 10 April 1994 (s.e. 3 days). Mean durations of ovarian activity were 212 (s.e. 6) and 195 (s.e. 5) days (P < 0·05) during which 12·4 (s.e. 0·29) and 11·5 (s.e. 0·38) ovarian cycles respectively were recorded. Ovulation rate was not affected by previous lambing date but was significantly lower in March compared with October (January lambing ewes 1·7 (s.e. 0·1) v. 2·3 (s.e. 0·1) (P < 0·001); May lambing ewes 1·6 (s.e. 0·1) v. 2·1 (s.e. 0·1) (P < 0·01)). Results demonstrate that (i) Mule ewes have a potential breeding season of up to 8 months duration; (ii) the onset and duration of ovarian activity can be influenced by previous lambing date; and (Hi) a seasonal decline in ovulation rate may, in practical terms, result in a lower lambing percentage for animals bred towards the end of their natural breeding period.

SUMMARY Results in 53 llamas (33 mated animals and 20 controls) showed that ovulation is copulation-induced in this species. Ovulation without copulation occasionally occurred during the height of the recognized breeding season in Bolivia. The first mating during the luteal phase (12–24 days after the preceding ovulation) resulted in ovulation in four out of ten llamas. Determination of pituitary luteinizing hormone (LH) content showed the highest level on the day before mating (9·00 μg./mg.) and the lowest level on day 4 (6·25 μg./mg.). LH level on day 8 was significantly higher than on day 4 (7·62 μg./mg.). Corpora lutea (c.l.) were well formed on day 4 after mating (408 mg.), reached a maximum size by day 8 (1920 mg.) and rapidly decreased in size to day 16 (136 mg.). The corpus albicans remained as an entity but decreased in size to 21 mg. on day 120. Similar changes were found in c.l. histology and progesterone content. The combined results indicate that the functional life of the c.l. in a non-pregnant llama is 16 days or less. Treatment with 25 i.u. human chorionic gonadotrophin was sufficient to cause ovulation in 50% of the animals treated. A large (150 mg.) dose of norethandrolone did not cause morphological regression of the c.l. when measured 5 days after treatment. Treatment with 5 mg. daily for 14 days caused regression of c.l. as compared with untreated controls and animals treated with oestradiol valerate.

The circannual secretion of progesterone and thyroxin of two indigenous sheep breeds (Chios and Karagouniko, each n=10) with different reproductive pattern was investigated. Blood samples were collected weekly and the serum hormone's concentration was assayed by RIA. Between breeds, no difference was detected in the mean annual thyroxin concentration. Similarly, no differences were detected within breeds in the mean thyroxin concentrations for the periods of increasing and decreasing daylight. Clear thyroxin peaks were detected in both breeds a month or so prior to the transition to anestrus period; these peaks were higher in the Karagouniko breed. Breeding season duration was clearly shorter in Karagouniko in comparison with that of Chios; in the later breed many animals had substantially short anestrus. These results give strong indications that thyroid activity has a catalytic role in the regulation of the reproductive period in ewes.

In 47 patients with operable cancer of the breast the thyroid activity has been studied with the following tests: a) radioactive iodine uptake, 3 and 24 hours after the administration of 50 μc of I131; b) conversion rate; c) hormonal index, i. e. the quantity of protein bound radioiodine in 1 liter of plasma, evaluated as a percentage of the administered dose. The thyroid function was studied immediately before Halstead operation as well as one, three, and twelve months later. From the data obtained it appears that a) breast cancer patients show a thyroid radioiodine uptake higher than the controls, either at the 3rd or at the 24th hour, b) after the removal of the breast, the uptake decreases, reaching normal values 12 months after the operation, c) the conversion rate does not show any difference from the controls either before or after the operation, d) the hormonal index is considerably higher than normal values before operation, and in spite of a lowering after radical mastectomy, it is still higher one year later. The data seem to show that breast cancer patients have a higher metabolic activity of the thyroid gland, without clinical signs of hyperthyroidism. After removal of the carcerous breast the thyroid activity slowly decreases. However, the conversion rate is not modified as compared to the control patients. Further confirmation of the present preliminary results should be obtained by a comparative evaluation of the results either in patients with other types of tumors, or in patients subjected to surgical procedures for non-tumorous lesions.

A highly sensitive radioimmunoassay for the determination of thyroxine in blood spotted on filter paper is described. The radioimmunoassay developed by Weeke and Ørskov for determination of serum thyroxine was simplified and shortened, and its cost was decreased, for use in programmes for mass screening of thyroid function. The method permits the use of small (2 mm diameter) dried blood dots, thus avoiding interference by binding proteins. Polyethylene glycol 6000 is used for the final separation of antibody bound labelled thyroxine, instead of the expensive and time-consuming wick chromatography used in the reference method. Serum thyroxine concentrations obtained using dried blood by the modified procedure correlate well with those obtained using serum by the reference method. The distribution of serum thyroxine concentration for a population of 2134 babies is given.

This study compared new and previously used (and autoclaved) progesterone devices for synchronisation of oestrus during the breeding season in Toggenburg goats. Nulliparous (n = 17) or lactating (n = 50) received new intravaginal devices containing 0.3 g progesterone (CONTROL), or similar devices previously used for either 6 (USED6) or 12 (USED12) days and subsequently autoclaved. All goats received 5 mg dinoprost at device insertion and 200 IU equine chorionic gonadotropin 5 days later and all devices were removed after 6 days. After device removal, females were mated by fertile bucks. Ovarian ultrasonography was performed every 12 h after device removal until ovulation detection. Blood samples were collected for determination of plasma progesterone concentration in different moments and intervals (from 7 days before device insertion to 3 days after its removal). There was no difference (P > 0.05) among groups CONTROL, USED6 or USED12 for: oestrus response [75% (18/24), 77% (17/22) or 71% (15/21), respectively]; duration of oestrus (30.7 ± 3.4, 31.8 ± 1.7 or 32.8 ± 3.4 h), percentage of ovulating goats [67% (6/9), 78% (7/9) or 56% (5/9)], ovulation rate (1.3 ± 0.2, 1.4 ± 0.2 or 1.8 ± 0.4 units of corpora lutea), average follicle diameter (6.2 ± 0.1, 6.7 ± 0.1 or 6.8 ± 0.3 mm) and pregnancy rate [54% (13/24), 50% (11/22) or 48% (10/21)]. Plasma progesterone concentrations were not different (P > 0.05) for does among treatments and between nulliparous and lactating females. In conclusion, autoclaved, previously used intravaginal progesterone devices are effective in synchronising oestrus and ovulation in cyclic goats during the breeding season.

Abstract. Thyroid function and thyroid gland volume, ultrasonically determined, were investigated in 27 hyperthyroid patients with solitary autonomous thyroid nodules before and during one year after 131I-treatment. Total thyroid volume decreased gradually from 40.9 ± 3.5 ml (mean ± sem) before treatment to 23.9 ± 1.8 ml (P < 0.001) at 3 months after 131I-treatment. No further change was observed. All but two patients received only one dose of 131I, and in spite of a significant decrease also of the non-adenoma side of the gland, none became hypothyroid. We conclude that 131I-therapy has an important place in the treatment of solitary autonomous thyroid nodules since all our patients became euthyroid within 3 months, only 2 of 27 patients needed more than one dose of 131I, no cases of hypothyroidism occurred, and thyroid volume was substantially decreased.

ABSTRACT The red cell triiodothyronine uptake technique as used in our hospital is described. Incubation time is of almost no importance. The temperature during incubation should be 37° C. Further improvement of the technique is obtained when all blood samples are brought up to 40 % haematocrit prior to incubation. Clinical results are discussed. It is yet too early to give a definite assessment of its clinical value, but it is definitely superior to the measurement of the BMR.

To find out the ability of Orobanche seeds to germinate immediately after seed set, seeds were germinated periodically at an interval of three months for one year in GR24. Some Orobanche seeds were capable of germination immediately after seed set but most required about nine months as after ripening or incubation period to be able to germinate. The phenomenon of after ripening in Orobanche seeds could be taken as an ecological measure to dormant over following unfavorable wet summer season. The growth hormone studies on Orobanche seed germination have shown that GA3 at a concentration of 100 ppm substantially enhanced seed germination when applied during pre-conditioning period. NAA showed some stimulatory effect at 0.5 - 1.0 ppm when applied during post-conditioning period but the hormone if applied during pre-conditioning period inhibited the germination. Kinetin failed to stimulate the germination at all the concentrations tested. Key words: Germination, root-parasite, hormone. Ecoprint Vol.11(1) 2004.

A new, simple, sensitive and rapid spectrophotometric method is proposed for the determination of trace amount of Nickel (II). The method is based on the formation of a 1:2 complex with 4-(4-((2-hydroxy-6-nitrophenyl) diazenyl) -3-methyl-5-oxo-2, 5-dihydro-1H-pyrazol-1-yl) benzenesulfonic acid (2-ANASP) as a new reagent is developed. The complex has a maximum absorption at 516 nm and εmax of 1. 84 X 105 L. mol-1. cm-1. A linear correlation (0. 25 – 4. 0μg. ml-1) was found between absorbance at λmax and concentration. The accuracy and reproducibility of the determination method for various known amounts of Nickel (II) were tested. The results obtained are both precise (RSD was 1. 2 %) and accurate (relative error was 0. 787 %). The effect of diverse ions on the determination of Nickel (II) to investigate the selectivity of the method were also studied. The stability constant of the product was 0. 399 X 106 L. mol-1. The proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of diabetes blood and normal human blood.
