This book develops a new theory of multi-parameter singular integrals associated with Carnot–Carathéodory balls. The book first details the classical theory of Calderón–Zygmund singular integrals and applications to linear partial differential equations. It then outlines the theory of multi-parameter Carnot–Carathéodory geometry, where the main tool is a quantitative version of the classical theorem of Frobenius. The book then gives several examples of multi-parameter singular integrals arising naturally in various problems. The final chapter of the book develops a general theory of singular integrals that generalizes and unifies these examples. This is one of the first general theories of multi-parameter singular integrals that goes beyond the product theory of singular integrals and their analogs. This book will interest graduate students and researchers working in singular integrals and related fields.

Whether it is a truism or a cliché, we stand on the shoulders of giants. Professor Robert Gardner is certainly one of them. The year 2019 marked 60 years since the publication of his seminal paper, Motivational Variables in Second Language Acquisition, written together with Wallace E. Lambert and published in the Canadian Journal of Psychology in 1959. The paper is widely acknowledged as the beginning of L2 motivation research, and to borrow Dörnyei’s words introducing this anthology, “[it] is not only important because it was a historical milestone and offered fertile ground in which subsequent research could grow, but also because it is still relevant” (Dörnyei, 2020, p. xxi). Having Dörnyei’s blessing, and with the caliber of contributors in this anthology, the relevance of Gardner’s legacy of research is without question. In this festschrift, editors Ali H. Al-Hoorie and Peter D. MacIntyre bring together twenty-six scholars in the fields of applied linguistics, social psychology, and sociology to honor the career and research contributions of Robert Gardner. Each contribution connects to, develops, and builds upon the ideas of Gardner and Lambert, and links them to current trends and developments related to contemporary language motivation research. Thus, this collection of papers will delight and catch the attention of a wide readership from graduate students to practitioners to established researchers alike.

The theory of teaching, commonly referred to as didactics, is gaining increasing recognition in the work of a teacher immersed in the present-day reality of education. It appears right to assume that familiarity with the changing world should inspire innovativeness aimed to eliminate unnecessary or inadequate phenomena. For this reason, it is advisable to treat didactics as a theoretical discipline with practical implications for teachers, especially in the process of transforming and perfecting the educational system to make it meet the real social and economic challenges. The paper presents empirical studies conducted in the period 2010-2015 among full-time and weekend students of Safety Engineering at Jan Dlugosz University in Czestochowa, Poland. The studies were aimed to test the hypothesis that using deterministic computer simulations in the didactic process fosters learning effectiveness in the field of technological education as compared to traditional methods applied in a laboratory.  The investigation employed extended methodology including verifying detailed hypotheses by means of empirical studies proved to be significant by the c2 (chi-squared) test. It was also situated within the general theory of education, additionally addressing the postulates of constructivist and cognitivist paradigms of learning.

Caves and other subterranean habitats with their often strange (even bizarre) inhabitants have long been objects of fascination, curiosity, and debate. The question of how such organisms have evolved, and the relative roles of natural selection and genetic drift, has engaged subterranean biologists for decades. Indeed, these studies continue to inform the general theory of adaptation and evolution. Subterranean ecosystems generally exhibit little or no primary productivity and, as extreme ecosystems, provide general insights into ecosystem function. The Biology of Caves and other Subterranean Habitats offers a concise but comprehensive introduction to cave ecology and evolution. Whilst there is an emphasis on biological processes occurring in these unique environments, conservation and management aspects are also considered. The monograph includes a global range of examples from more than 25 countries, and case studies from both caves and non-cave subterranean habitats; it also provides a clear explanation of specialized terms used by speleologists. This accessible text will appeal to researchers new to the field and to the many professional ecologists and conservation practitioners requiring a concise but authoritative overview. Its engaging style will also make it suitable for undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in cave and subterranean biology. Its more than 650 references, 150 of which are new since the first edition, provide many entry points to the research literature.

Posthumanism is considered as one of the significant areas of modern philosophy. The article describes the main provisions of modern philosophical posthumanism: the multiplicity of human experience, the rejection of anthropocentrism and hierarchical representation of nature; overcoming dichotomous thinking. Its connection with the movements of feminism and postcolonialism is indicated. Based on contemporary philosophical and pedagogical research, the authors provide a general outline of the post-humanist theory of education. We can talk about the posthumanist nature of the modern understanding of university education, formed by the openness of universities, their international rivalry in the postindustrial economy and the active involvement of foreign students. This nature is expressed in the transition from personality formation to the formation of assigned skills, expressed in competencies. The growth of the importance of environmental issues at all levels of education, the interaction of education with new technologies, the constitution of new ethics and new aesthetics are also considered. It is noted that in modern conditions pedagogy and philosophy of education cannot avoid discussing the issues posed by the posthumanist movement. The authors believe that a characteristic feature of the posthumanist concept of the necessary transformation of education is its focus on the problem of modernizing its content. An example is the saturation of educational programs with environmental issues. The authors interpret this situation as the preservation of the traditional structure of education, which adapts to the solution of new, including ideological, tasks. The vulnerability of this approach lies in the impossibility for posthumanism to legitimize it by referring to the essentialist view of man.

The presented paper concerns the identity of the modern theory of education as the fundamental discipline of pedagogical (educational) sciences. The considerations refer to the theoretical development and research orientations used in the modern theory of education. In this context, the special focus was given to the importance of such analytical categories as theory, model, concept, and the theory-practice relationship of education.
