Palm trees play important roles as breeding and foraging habitats for sylvatic triatomines, vectors of Chagas disease. The occurrence of triatomines in peridomestic palm trees may increase the risk of invasion in households and should therefore be considered to develop prevention strategies. In order to investigate the infestation of palm trees by triatomines in the state of Bahia and to determine their natural infection with Trypanosoma spp., we sampled 183 palms in 12 municipalities between 2006 and 2011 using manual capture and/or mouse-baited adhesive traps. Triatomines were detected in 79 palms (43%) such as Copernicia prunifera, (Mart.) Becc., Mauritia flexuosa L. and Attalea spp. (Attalea burretiana Bondar or Attalea salvadorensis Glassman). In other palm species (Syagrus coronata (Mill) H.E. Moore, Attalea funifera Mart ex. Spreng, and Elaeis guineensis Jacq) triatomines were not detected. Rhodnius neglectus Lent, Triatoma sordida (Stål), and Triatoma pseudomaculata Corrêa & Espínola occurred in C. prunifera along the São Francisco River. In western Bahia, R. neglectus and Psammolestes tertius Lent & Jurberg were detected in M. flexuosa, while Triatoma tibiamaculata (Pinto) occurred in Attalea sp. in urban areas of Salvador on the coast of Bahia. Overall, 180 triatomines were captured, mainly R. neglectus. T. tibiamaculata had the highest rate of natural infection (61%). The results indicate that at least three species of palms are suitable habitats for triatomines in the state of Bahia and occur in peridomestic environment, what may enhance the probability of triatomine invasion into houses.

INTRODUCTION: The present study shows a descriptive analysis of triatomine occurrence and its natural Trypanosoma infection rates in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, between 2006 and 2007. METHODS: Entomological data for the species, such as specimens captured in both intra and peridomiciles and natural infection index, were obtained via domiciliary capture in 147 municipalities from 11 Regional Managements of Health. The database was obtained from a sample of insects (100% infected and 20% non-infected) sent to the Central Laboratory of Pernambuco. RESULTS: A total of 18,029 triatomines were analyzed from 138 municipalities of the state. Triatoma pseudomaculata (35%), Triatoma brasiliensis (34%), and Panstrongylus lutzi (25%) were the most captured species. These species also showed a widespread geographical distribution in the state. Panstrongylus megistus, Triatoma petrocchiae, Triatoma melanocephala, Triatoma sordida, Rhodnius nasutus, Rhodnius neglectus, and Triatoma infestans showed more limited geographical distribution and lower relative abundance. The parasitological research showed that 8.8% of the triatomines were naturally infected with flagellates morphologically similar to Trypanosoma cruzi and 91.3% of them were captured inside houses in 113 municipalities. P. lutzi showed the highest rates of natural infection. CONCLUSIONS: After the control of T. infestans, synanthropic species, such as T. brasiliensis, T. pseudomaculata, and P. lutzi, maintain the risk of T. cruzi transmission to humans in the state of Pernambuco. These species are widely distributed, and infected specimens have been found inside houses. Thus, an enhanced surveillance and vector control of Chagas disease is recommended in Pernambuco.

The sensitivity of Dioscorea alata var. bètè-bètè and D. cayenensis-rotundata var. krenglè treated with palm wine obtained from oil palm trees (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) to seven fungi isolated from yam rots was assessed. Yam tubers were collected from two markets in Abidjan and also from storage sites in Bringakro (at 180 km from Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire). Pathogenecity tests showed that Penicilium oxalicum was the most pathogenic among all fungi isolated. Krenglè was more susceptible than bètè-bètè. In vitro, fermented palm wine totally inhibited mycelial growth of all fungi isolated with the exception of P. oxalicum and Aspergillus niger. Inhibition percentage of mycelial growth of all fungi was more important for krenglè than bètè-bètè. Regardless the yam species, in vivo tests showed that fermented palm wine was more effective than non fermented palm wines when used as a preventive treatment. Key words: natural fungicide, palm wine, integrated disease management

Introduction: The objective of this work was to study Triatomine fauna captured during the period from 2006–2014 in Mato Grosso do Sul and to investigate the influence of climatic elements on these populations by providing subsidies to guide vector control work in the state. Methods: We verified the natural infection rate, the abundance of classes, constancy, frequency and dominance, and the influence of climatic factors on the frequency of triatomine. Results: Of the 14,178 specimens collected, 2,118 (14.94%) were domiciliary, and 12,060 (85.06%) were peridomiciles. The rate of natural infection in Triatoma matogrossensis was 18.18%, followed by Rhodnius neglectus (0.46%) and Triatoma sordida (0.27%). Triatoma sordida was the most frequent species: constant, abundant and dominant. We observed the influence of climatic factors on the encounter of insects during the period from January to December and throughout the eight years of the study period. Climatic factors such as relative humidity affect the frequency of insects. Conclusions: Although Mato Grosso do Sul is considered free of endemic vector transmission by Triatoma infestans, the persistent encounter vectors naturally infected by Trypanosoma cruzi remain worthy of attention, and the information in this work may improve actions to combat the vector in the state better selecting the periods and favorable environmental conditions for control using insecticides, ensuring greater efficiency and decreasing the possibilities of the vector triatomine becoming resistant to the chemical agent.

The results of the development of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) microsatellite markers are given step by step, from the screening of libraries enriched in (GA)n, (GT)n, and (CCG)n simple-sequence repeats (SSRs) to the final characterisation of 21 SSR loci. Also published are primer sequences, estimates of allele size range, and expected heterozygosity in E. guineensis and in the closely related species E. oleifera, in which an optimal utility of the SSR markers was observed. Multivariate data analyses showed the ability of SSR markers to efficiently reveal the genetic-diversity structure of the genus Elaeis in accordance with known geographical origins and with measured genetic relationships based on previous molecular studies. High levels of allelic variability indicated that E. guineensis SSRs will be a powerful tool for genetic studies of the genus Elaeis, including variety identification and intra- or inter-specific genetic mapping. PCR amplification tests on a subset of 16 other palm species and allele-sequence data showed that E. guineensis SSRs are putative transferable markers across palm taxa. In addition, phenetic information based on SSR flanking region sequences makes E. guineensis SSR markers a potentially useful molecular resource for any researcher studying the phylogeny of palm taxa.Key words: Palmae, SSR, phenetic analysis, phylogeny.

Abstract Vanilla palmarum is an obligately epiphytic orchid distributed widely throughout South America with emblematic specificity for species of palms. This epiphyte-phorophyte association was examined through the analysis of specimens available via the database of Centro de Referência em Informação Ambiental and from Brazilian herbaria. We recognized nine species as hosts of V. palmarum in Brazil: Acrocomia aculeata, Attalea phalerata, Attalea speciosa, Elaeis guineensis, Mauritia flexuosa, Syagrus cearensis, S. coronata, S. schizophylla, and S. vagans. The most important phorophytes of V. palmarum were found to be A. speciosa (Cerrado), A. phalerata (Pantanal), M. flexuosa (Amazon Forest) and S. coronata (Caatinga). Future management actions must consider the association between V. palmarum and its phorophyte palm species in order to ensure the protection of this ecological interaction.

Green open space (RTH) is one of the most important elements in urban areas that can function to balance the ecological conditions in an area so that there is a balance between ecosystems and development developments in the modern era. But the pace of urban development often does not consider the existence of green space. Other than that, many people do not know the existence and function of green space, so it often looks like being ignored and not maintained. In this case, researchers are interested in identifying the potential presence of green open space in the Seberang Ulu II sub-district of Palembang. This study will collect data on the location of each green space in the Seberang Ulu II sub-district, identification of existing vegetation types, estimation of carbon storage, and the level of understanding of the Seberang Ulu II community on the existence and function of green space. The method used is to use plot sampling to determine the level of diversity of green space and the distribution of questionnaires to determine the level of community understanding. The results showed that the area of green open space in the Seberang Ulu II sub-district was only 1.88% of the total area. From the open green space location in Seberang Ulu II Subdistrict, there are 33 species of green open vegetation plants. Where Angsana plants (Pterocarpus indicus), trembesi (Albizia saman), palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.), Glodogantiang (Polyathea longifolia) and palm (Mascarena sp) become a plant that dominates and has the highest INP value.
