Lecturers in universities preparing for future teachers often teach materials which they think are up-to-date. However, is it true that what they teach may be useful for their students in their teaching in the future. Students may graduate in four to five years and they may not get jobs as soon as they leave universities. When they get a job as teachers, it might be five to six years after they graduate. At that time in schools, a new curriculum may be introduced, new theories on language teaching may emerge, and new problems may be faced. What they got from their lecturers in universities may not be relevant for solving the new problems. So, they need new knowledge or even new skills. This paper tries to explore the ways lecturers can do to prepare their students to face the ‘real’ challenges in their time of teaching.

Teachers of mathematics are often confronted with pupils asking, “Why should I study mathematics?” or “Where shall I ever use geometry?” Such statements made by pupils are easily answered by any mathematician; so are of little concern. The real problem lies in the criticism from adults, for many of our fellow teachers and executives believe that mathematics should have no place in the new curriculum. Just what should be taught in its place has not been determined, for their criticism is of the destructive type, not the constructive. It is only natural that every teacher should feel that his specialty is of importance, so regardless of all the unfavorable comments some people make about mathematics, I still feel that it should be studied by all pupils capable of doing high school work.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of Sustainable Development (SD) and its goals to the students of the Faculty of Education, future teachers, in order to become skilled and knowledgeable and then introduce these Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to their students. As such, this study tries to link the concept of English Language Learning (ELL), English Language Teaching (ELT), and the SDGs as a type of all-inclusiveness within the “3 Ps”: Planet, People, and Profit. The instrument used for the purpose of this study was an online questionnaire sent to the students of the Faculty of Education in Kosovo. The total number of participants was 89. The students’ responses revealed that 60 percent of the future teachers are aware of the SD concept; however, the results indicate that not all “3 Ps” are hit upon by the future teachers. Based on the results, the most common areas of interest and societal needs of learning about SDGs are related to education, gender equality, good health and well-being, alleviation of poverty, and decent work and economics. These same goals are also hit upon in ELT classes. The study concludes that Kosovo’s future teachers are more concerned about issues related to social issues—“P-People”—followed by goals related to “P-Profit,” while goals related to “P-Planet,” the environment, are left behind. Future teachers’ knowledge about SDGs is vital, for there is a significant direct impact of learning about specific SDGs in higher education institutions, and the application of SDG topics in English language classes can infuse the SD concepts.

Abstract This paper addresses the question of how speakers adapt their gestures according to their interlocutor’s proficiency level in the language of the interaction especially in the specific context of foreign language teaching. We know that speakers make changes in their speech when addressing a non-native speaker, called Foreigner Talk (Ferguson, 1975) to make their speech more comprehensible. However, whether and how gestures are also modified along with speech has hardly been addressed in the literature. In this study, we examined the speech and gesture of future teachers of French in a word explanation task to see what types of adjustments they made when explaining a word to a native speaker and a non-native speaker. We had ten future teachers of French explain the same 12 words to a native and a non-native speaker of French and compared the explanations. We found that the future teachers produced significantly more gestures, significantly longer gestures in duration, significantly more illustrative (iconic and deictic) gestures, and significantly larger gestures when addressing a non-native interlocutor. These results show that native speakers make not only speech adjustments but also gesture adjustments in addressing non-native speakers.

The indigenous knowledge of the Basotho makes it simple for this speech community to name their traditional medicinal plants in such a way that they are meaningful; this could also be viewed as an empowerment technique, especially in the economic sphere. Their medicinal plants names seem to be idiomatic and to express certain philosophies of the Basotho society. Creativity is observable in this kind of naming, and many names allude to the kind of remedy that is associated with the medicinal plant. It is therefore the interest of this paper to consider the names of medical plants among the Basotho whose names allude to the remedy they provide. The names of Sesotho medicinal plants and the reasoning of the Basotho in general behind the name and the use of each medicinal plant will be discussed in this article. This paper will further preserve and promote the use of Basotho traditional medicines for the future generation.
