Border Spaces and Places: the Age of the Camps

This chapter discusses arts-based research (filmic analysis and walking ethnographies) with asylum seekers and migrants waiting in border spaces, mostly in camps (in Greece, France, Jordan and Melilla) to move on with their journey. The construction of the camp as a site of containment, constraint and a border space and what this means in the lives of the people and families waiting, some for many years, is examined through narrative interviews, photographs and filmic work. The chapter examines the constitution of space through the relational, embodied and imagined experiences of migrants and the material and symbolic concept of the border and border spaces in their lives, journeys and sense of belonging.

This article presents findings from three arts-based studies conducted by the African Centre for Migration and Society, in partnerships with Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action and the Sisonke National Sex Worker Movement. Drawing on participant-created visual and narrative artefacts, the article offers insights into the complex ways in which queer migrants, refugees and asylum seekers living in South Africa negotiate their identities, resist oppression and confront stereotypes. It reveals the dynamic ways in which queer migrants, refugees and asylum seekers forge a sense of belonging in spite of concurrent vulnerabilities and structural discrimination. It also reflects on the benefits and limitations of using participatory arts-based research with marginalised groups.

The challenge of transforming an empty space into a gallery setting takes on the concept of place making. A place can be seen as space that has meaning when the setting considers space, surroundings, contents, the people and its activities. This research concentrates on investigating how visitors perceive the space by gauging their sense of place (sense of belonging towards a place). Galleries are currently facing changes in this technological era whereby multiple content and context, space and form, display modes, tools and devices are introduced in one single space. An observational study was done during the Foundation Studies Annual Exhibition held at Faculty of Creative Multimedia, Multimedia University. The exhibition was curated and managed by staff and students of Foundation Year showcasing an array of design works. Analogue and digital presentations of paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography and video works were displayed.. The outcome of this research will contribute towards a better design criteria of place making which affects individual behaviour, social values and attitudes. Characterizing types of visitor experience will improve the understanding of a better design criteria of place making, acceptance, understanding and satisfaction.

The Reformation of Prophecy presents and supports the case for viewing the prophet and biblical prophecy as a powerful lens by which to illuminate many aspects of the reforming work of the Protestant reformers in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It provides a chronological and developmental analysis of the significance of the prophet and biblical prophecy across leading Protestant reformers in articulating a theology of the priesthood of all believers, a biblical model of the pastoral office, a biblical vision of the reform of worship, and biblical processes for discerning right interpretation of Scripture. Through the tool of the prophet and biblical prophecy, the reformers framed their work under, within, and in support of the authority of Scripture—for the true prophet speaks the Word of God alone and calls the people, their worship and their beliefs and practices, back to the Word of God. The book also demonstrates how interpretations and understandings of the prophet and biblical prophecy contributed to the formation and consolidation of distinctive confessional identities, especially around differences in their visions of sacred history, Christological exegesis of Old Testament prophecy, and interpretation of Old Testament metaphors. This book illuminates the significant shifts in the history of Protestant reformers’ engagement with the prophet and biblical prophecy—shifts from these serving as a tool to advance the priesthood of all believers to a tool to clarify and buttress clerical identity and authority to a site of polemical-confessional exchange concerning right interpretations of Scripture.

The last few years have been an awakening time for the people, communities and governments of the global village. Escalating problems in the Middle East, global economic uncertainty and an increase in asylum seekers, refugees and migration worldwide have reignited tensions involving boundaries and borders, both geographical and cognitive. One event which highlighted these tensions in Australia, and which was given much media coverage, was the ‘children overboard’ event in October 2001. Utilising a selection of print news coverage of the event, this paper explores how the ‘children overboard’ event demarcated national identities and spaces through the construction and representation of ‘good’ Australian citizens and ‘bad’ asylum seeker ‘others’. Specifically referring to ‘children overboard’ as an ‘event’, I seek to highlight the constructed and representational nature of ‘children overboard’ as a media story and political tool, one which promoted a continuing threat of ‘others’ to the nation in order to gain support for government policy and legitimize national security, and in so doing creating a model of Australian citizenship and identity based upon fear.

The purpose of this study is to highlight the ideological dimensions of the Soviet Moldavian historiographical discourse concerning the question whether the territory of Moldavia belonged to the medieval Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia or not. We have shown that, between the late 1930s and the early 1950s, this discourse was deeply marked by the Stalinist resuscitation of pan-Russian and pan-Slavic ideology, by the Soviet-Romanian dispute over Bessarabia, as well as by the campaign of inoculating the people of this province and of RASSM with the sense of belonging to the Eastern Slavic world and, therefore, to the USSR. At the time, in addition to the argument asserting that the territory of Moldavia had formerly belonged to the Galicia-Volhynia, the medieval Moldavian state was estimated to have partially owned its existence to this very kingdom

Cities are an important symbol of our contemporary era. They are not just places of commerce, but are emblems of the people who live within them. A significant feature of cities are their meeting places; areas that have either been designed or appropriated by the people. An example of this is the café. Cafés hold a unique place in history, as sites that have witnessed the growth of revolution, relationships great and small, between people and ideas, and more recently, technology. Computers are transcending their place in the private home or office and are now finding their way into café culture. What I am suggesting is that this is bringing about a new way of understanding how cafés foster community and act as media for social interaction. To explore this idea further I will look at the historical background of the café, particularly within Parisian culture. For W. Scott Haine, cities such as Paris have highly influential abilities. As he points out "the Paris milieu determined the consciousness of workers as much as their labor" (114). While specifically related to Paris, Haine is highlighting an important aspect in the relationship between people and the built environment. He suggests that buildings and streets are not just inanimate objects, but structures that shape our habits and our beliefs. Towards the middle of the nineteenth century, Paris was developing a new cultural level, referred to as Bohemia. Derived from the French word for Gypsy (Seigel 5) it was used to denote a class of people who in the eyes of Honoré de Balzac were the talent of the future (Seigel 4). People who would be diplomats, artists, journalists, soldiers, who at that moment existed in a transient state with much social but little material wealth. Emerging within this Bohemian identity were the bourgeois. They were individuals who led a working class existence, they usually held property but more importantly they helped provide the physical environment for Bohemian culture to flourish. Bourgeois society had the money to patronize Bohemian artists. As Seigel says "Bohemian and bourgeois were -- and are -- parts of a single field: they imply, require, and attract each other" (5). Cafés were a site of symbiosis between these two groups. As Seigel points out they were not so much established to create a Bohemian world away from the reality of working life, but to provide a space were the predominantly bourgeois clientèle could be entertained (216). These ideas of entertainment saw the rise of the literary café, a venue not just for drinking and socialization but where potential writers and orators could perform for an audience. Contemporary society has seen a strong decline in Bohemian culture, with the (franchised) café being appropriated by the upper class as a site of lattes and mud cake. Recent developments in Internet technology however have prompted a change in this trend. Whereas in the past cafés had brought about a symbiosis between the classes of Bohemian and bourgeois society they are now becoming sites that foster relationships between the middle class and computer technology. Computers and the Internet have their origins within a privileged community, of government departments, defence forces and universities. It is only in the past three years that Internet technology has moved out of a realm of expert knowledge to achieve a broad level of usage in the average household. Certain barriers still exist though in terms of a person's ability to gain access to this medium. Just as Bohemian culture arose out of a population of educated people lacking skills of manual labor and social status (Seigel 217), computers and Internet culture offer a means for people to go beyond their social boundaries. Cafés were sites for Bohemians to transcend the social, political, and economic dictates that had shaped their lives. In a similar fashion the Internet offers a means for people to explore beyond their physical world. Internet cafés have been growing steadily around the world. What they represent is a change in the concept of social interaction. As in the past with the Paris café and the exchange of ideas, Internet cafés have become places were people can interact not just on a face-to-face basis but also through computer-mediated communication. What this points to is a broadening in the idea of the café as a medium of social interaction. This is where the latte and mud cake trend is beginning to break down. By placing Internet technology within cafés, proprietors are inviting a far greater section of the community within their walls. While these experiences still attract a price tag they suggest a change in the idea that would have seen both the café and the Internet as commodities of the élite. What this is doing is re-invigorating the idea of the streets belonging to the middle class and other sub-cultures, allowing people access to space so that relationships and communities can be formed. AbstractResearcher positionality has gained increased attention in recent years, and music education is following suit. Carrying out research that addresses diversity in music education demands a high level of reflexivity and a problematising of one’s own position as researcher. This chapter offers critical insights into the complexity of such a positioning and how research practices might reflect, confirm and/or disrupt the existing ‘body politic’ that our bodies signify. Researcher positionality is here examined in terms of pregnancy within a research project based at an asylum seeker accommodation centre. Applying a Butlerian lens to the examination, the chapter uncovers how the researcher’s pregnant body was ‘performed’ and became the main focus of ‘recognition’ amongst the people encountered at the centre. These processes of ‘performing’ and being ‘recognised’ as a ‘pregnant researcher’ manifested in various ways such as gaining access, credibility, trust, relationships, ethical considerations and power. Thus, the chapter opens a space to reflect critically on researcher positionality and specifically its influence on the research process in sites that seek to understand diversity in music education.

Mohajer (camp-e-forsat) was filmed in Forssa asylum seeker reception center in Finland, together with a recently arrived group of Hazara asylum seekers from Afghanistan. In Mohajer (camp-e-forsat) the people who are labeled as asylum seekers and refugees, redefine themselves with the word mohajer. Mohajer is a loan word from Arabic, and in Persian it means anyone or anything migrating from one place to another.  A camp is a place where mohajers live in a state of waiting. Mohajers are asylum seekers, refugees, and other migrants in precarious situations and their camps are reception centers, detention centers, and temporary shelters. Camps are often located in remote areas, effectively isolating the individuals living in them. They are facilities for storing humans, full of invisible walls, and windows to remind people that the world they can see through them is out of their reach. Cobra: “When someone asks me where I’m from, I say I’m from Afghanistan, but I’ve never been there. Mohajer means not belonging anywhere, not where you are and not where you’re from or your parents are from. My husband says that we’re born mohajers. There is no other name for us. When they ask your name, you should say your name is mohajer. Our umbilical cords are cut with the word mohajer. Even in hospitals, when a new Afghan child is born, they say a new mohajer was born. They don’t say this woman’s child was born, they say one Afghan mohajer was born. Those two words, Afghan and mohajer, are attached together, it’s always Afghan mohajer. Then many who have migrated, try to detach themselves from the word mohajer. But in a new country, you’re still a mohajer.”

Abstract Physical education (PE) is a site that brings categories of difference under erasure, presenting a wicked problem for how a sense of belonging is cultivated for all learners to foster physical activity, health and wellbeing across the lifespan. This article explores how, we, as two teachers of PE, turned to postqualitative and ‘new’ materialist inquiry to generate a sense of belonging within a PE/environmental education nexus. Taking up Karen Barad’s agential realism and Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s rhizome, we conceptualise this PE/environmental education nexus as a transdisciplinary approach to curriculum that enacts a knowing/being/thinking/doing between, and across, borders, boundaries, categories, fields and practices. We then show how this nexus was actualised in our teaching practices through two vignettes. As transdisciplinary approaches to curriculum are grounded in the lived, embodied and embedded (micro) politics of location, individuals are imbued with affective obligation to enact affirmative patterns of relating moment-to-moment. This means that a sense of belonging is always imminent, invented and co-created, bringing attention to situated obligations to enact good relations with ourselves, each other and wider planetary systems.

This chapter shows that vanhu vatema understood mobility as the centerpiece of their interactions with the insect. It commences from a view of vatema's management of mhesvi as a site of innovation, illustrating the centrality of mobility in interactions between vanhu and zvipukanana. The chapter strategically deploys the travel accounts of vachana writing in the nineteenth century about their encounters with people living with and despite mhesvi. The strategy herein is to read these travel accounts as acts of witnessing to, and confessions about, ruzivo rwemhesvi (knowledge of tsetse) among the people living in the lands between and along the Zambezi and Limpopo Rivers. The chapter maps mhesvi-infested areas and mhesvi management techniques—namely, forest clearance, selective culling of mhuka, strategic settlement of vanhu, use of repellents, movement by night, and inoculation. At the end of the day, African mhesvi management was about mobilities management.
