BACKGROUND: Typhoid fever has become one global health problem. Typhoid fever is caused by a Gram-negative bacterium, Salmonella typhi. Eel (Anguilla spp.) is a fish which lives in the sea or in freshwater. Several previous studies have found that Anguilla spp. mucus has the ability as antibacterial against Gram-positive and negative. Although the antibacterial activity of Anguilla spp. against various pathogens had been reported, very little is known about its activity against Salmonella typhi. The aim of this study was to investigate antibacterial activity of Anguilla spp. mucus against Salmonella typhi bacteria.METHODS: Present study was an experimental in vitro test. Antibacterial activity assays were carried out by the disc diffusion method. Antibacterial activity was determined by the clear zone formed around the paper disc and minimum inhibitory concentration was determined by observing the lowest concentration which could inhibit the growth of Salmonella typhi.RESULTS: Result of the present study showed that the Anguilla spp. mucus has inhibitory effects against Salmonella typhi. Minimum inhibitory concentration from the Anguilla spp. mucus was 12.5%.CONCLUSION: Anguilla spp. mucus has antibacterial activity against the Salmonella typhi bacteria.KEYWORDS: eel fish mucus, Anguilla spp., antibacterial activity, Salmonella typhi

The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of ethanol concoction (mixed extract) of three herbs plants, such as: Boesenbergia pandurata, Solanum ferox and Zingimber zerumbet against Aeromonas hydrophila, Pseudomonas sp. and both bacteria. The Plant extracts were obtained by using ethanol and the concentration of the extract was 600 mgL-1 of B. pandurata, 900 mgL-1 of S. ferox and 200 mgL-1 of Z. zerumbet. The inhibition zone was measured after 6, 12, 18, 24 h incubation at 30o C. The ratios of concoction S. ferox and B. pandurata (for 100 mL solution) were 90:10; 80:20; 70:30; 60:40; 50:50; 40:60; 30:70; 20:80; 10:90. The same ratios were made on the concoction of S. ferox and Z. zerumbet. The concoctions of S. ferox and B. pandurata in the ratio of 50:50 and 60:40, and the concoction of S. ferox and Z. Zerumbet with ratio 60:40 had higher antibacterial activity against A. hydrophila single isolate compared to the other concoctions. Furthermore, the concoction extract of S. ferox and B. pandurate 50:50 and the combined of S. ferox and Z. zerumbet ratio 50:50 and 90:10 were the best combination to inhibit the growth of a single bacterium Pseudomonas sp. The combined S. ferox and B. pandurata ratio 50:50; 10:90 and S. ferox mixed with Z. zerumbet ratio 50:50 and 40:60 were the best combination against the combined bacteria between A. hydrophila and Pseudomonas sp. The conclusion of this research was the combined extract of S. ferox and B. pandurata and S. ferox with Z. zerumbet are effective to suppress the growth of single or combination of A. hydropila and Pseudomonas sp.

In this study, bio-glass 45S5 powder was added to pure magnesium powder to produce the magnesium/bio-glass composite by powder metallurgy method. The composite was synthesized based on 5 wt. %, 10 wt. % and 15 wt. % of bio-glass. The composite was investigated from the point of view of its microstructure, physical properties and in-vitro bioactivity. Microstructural analysis showed that bio-glass was agglomerated with increasing content of bio-glass. Density and hardness of composite increased as the content of bio-glass increased. During in-vitro test, corrosion resistance increased as the content of bio-glass increased.

This study aims to determine the potency of Renggak (Amomum dealbatum) extract as bio pesticide against Pyricularia oryzae and Xanthomonas oryzae. Therefore an in vitro of  antifungal and antibacterial activity of the Renggak ethanol extract were carried out against Pyricularia oeyzae and Xanthomonas oryzae. In vitro antifungal  analysis were done using agar diffusing method by dissolving Renggak extract (1%, 5%, and 10%) into fungal medium and the growth of  Pyricularia oryzae were observed. In vitro antibacterial analysis were complited using agar diffusing method with paper disk that contain Renggak extract (10%, 20%, and 30%) and antibiotic chloroamfenikol as positive control. The result suggest that Renggak fruit extract has antifungal and antibacterial activities. The treatment with 10% Renggak extract could inhibit the growth of Pyricularia oryzae to 100%, same with positive control (Fungicide Score-250). In vitro test for antibacterial activity showed that treatments with 20% and 30% Renggak extract gave inhibitory activities that similar with positive control. Renggak ethanol extract gave positive results on Flavonoid, Alkaloid, Steroid, Terpenoid, and Saponin tests. GC-MS assays showed that Renggak ethanol extract produces at least 10 organic compounds that was identified as  2-butanone, 4-methoxypheyl, Benzenepropanoic-aci, 4-hydroxyphenil, CAS, octadecanoid acid, stearic acid, palmiti acid, Benzenepropanoic acid, dan Farnesol isomer A, which have antimicrobial avtivities.

<p class="1Body">Common snook (<em>Centropomus undecimalis</em>) is a marine species with high aquaculture potential; although its digestive physiology is still unknown and knowledge of that could allow the development of a balanced feed for commercial culture of this fish. The objective of this study was to partially characterize the digestive proteases in <em>C. undecimalis</em> using electrophoretic and biochemical techniques. A total of 50 wild snook juveniles were used to determine the optimal values of pH stability and temperature as well as the effect of inhibitors on digestive, gastric and intestinal proteases. The optimal pH for gastric proteases was obtained to be 2 with stability obtained between 2 and 8; the optimal temperature was detected at 75ºC for in vitro test, and the thermal stability was between 25 and 45ºC. Intestinal proteases showed two peaks of activity at a pH of 7 and 11; meanwhile, the greatest stability was found between a pH of 4 and 10; the optimal temperature was at 65ºC, and the greatest stability was detected between 35 and 45ºC. Up to 86% of the gastric protease activity was inhibited by pepstatin A; meanwhile, the intestinal proteases TPCK, TLCK, 1-10 Phenanthroline, SBT1, EDTA, PMSF and ovalbumin reduced the activity by 17%, 68%, 85%, 41%, 40.5%, 60% and 59%, respectively.</p>

Characterization of eggplant endophyte bacteria and rhizobacteria as well as their antagonistic ability against Ralstonia solanacearum. Bacterial wilt caused by Ralsonia solanacearum is one of important diseases causing severe loses in eggplant production. Various strategies were used to manage bacterial wilt, including planting resistant varieties, soil amandement, and soil solarization. However, management of R. solanacearum in eggplant by using endophytic bacteria and rhizobacteria were not been done that much. The objective of this study was to: (1) characterization of endophytic and rhizobacteria; (2) determines the inhibition ability of endophytic and rhizobacteria isolates against R. solanacearum pathogen on eggplant. The laboratory experiment was arranged in completely randomized design with 5 treatments and 5 replications. The double layer method using yeast peptone glucose agar (YPGA) medium was used in vitro test. Based on the morphological characteristics these isolates were suspected as a member of genus Bacillus. Among the isolates used in this study, TK isolate showed the best capability to inhibit growth of R. solanacearum.
