The yellow passion fruit presents a high nutritional demand, and successive cultivations in the same area lead the soil to nutritional exhaustion, creating the need for restitution through fertilizers. In the context of organic managements, alternatives must be sought, which, besides improving soil fertility, can increase the contents of soil organic matter. Therefore, this work aimed to evaluate the effect of organic basal fertilization in passion fruit cultivation on the chemical properties of the soil and nutrient contents of the plant. Two experiments were performed in two rural properties, with soils presenting sandy-loam and clay-loam texture. The experimental design was in randomized blocks (RBD), with 5 treatments and 4 blocks. The treatments consisted of the application of organic compost in different planting hole diameters: 0.4 m; 0.8 m; 1.2 m; 1.6 m, and 2.0 m, and their respective volumes of organic compost: 0.0007 m³; 0.03 m³; 0.06 m³, 0.10 m³; 0.16 m³. The chemical characteristics of the soil and the foliar content of nutrients were evaluated. Soil texture interferes with the effects of organic fertilization. Regardless of the texture, fertilization increases the contents of organic matter and P in the soil. The successive organic cultivation in a sandy-loam soil increases the content of P and provides higher foliar contents of N, P, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Zn, and Na.

This research aimed to evaluate the effect of doses of organic compost on the yield and economic profitability of organic yellow passion fruit grown in sandy-loam and clay-loam soils. Two experiments were installed in the field, in different soil types and municipalities in the state of Acre. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with five treatments, four replications, and four plants per experimental unit. The treatments consisted of adding the compost as a replacement for 1/3 of the volume of cylindrical planting holes with 40 cm, 80 cm, 120 cm, 160 cm, and 200 cm, corresponding to the addition of 6.3; 25.1; 56.5; 100.4, and 156.9 liters per planting hole, respectively. The mean fruit mass and the yield of the yellow passion fruit were higher in sandy-loam soil. The total revenue was R$ 4,311.6 ha-1 in the clayey soil and R$ 5,841.9 ha-1 in the sandy soil. The total cost was higher in the clayey soil than in sandy soil. Both soils responded in quadratic function with an increase in the cost as the volume of organic compost was increased, ranging from R$ 12,736.00 ha-1 with 6.3 liters of compost per hole up to R$ 26,249.63 ha-1 with 156.9 liters of compost per hole. Net income was negative for all compost volumes in both types of soil, responding linearly, with a reduction in revenue of R$ 80.82 ha-1 with the addition of each liter of compost in the pit due to the low yield caused by period long drought.

Studies related to adaptation to the environment and different conditions of water availability contribute to decision-making regarding the management of any crop to be implanted. Accordingly, this work aimed to evaluate the yield and quality of organic yellow passion fruit cultivated in a long root system in dryland conditions. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with five treatments and four replications with four plants each. The treatments consisted of the alteration of the length of the root system, namely: T1 = 25 cm; T2 = 50 cm; T3 = 75 cm; T4 = 100 cm; and T5 = 125 cm. At 120 days after emergence (DAE), the seedlings were transplanted to the field and the following variables were evaluated: plant height (cm) and base diameter (mm) at 120 DAE; total titratable acidity (TTA), total soluble solids (TSS), Ratio (TSS/TTA); and fruit yield. The cultivation of tall seedlings with a long root system provides the maintenance of production during the dry season. The TTA, TSS, and the ratio do not change when modifying the length of the root system, although they do change with the harvest season. The cultivation of passion fruit in an organic system using plants with a long root system with an estimated length of 114 cm provides a higher fruit yield (7,472 kg ha-1) in 22 months of cultivation.

The need for reliable planting techniques that encourage posttransplant root growth in adverse conditions has prompted research into planting above soil grade (above-grade). Container-grown Morella cerifera (L.) Small (syn. Myrica cerifera L.) (wax myrtle), Illicium floridanum Ellis (Florida anise tree), and Kalmia latifolia L. (mountain laurel) plants were planted in Horhizotrons (root observation chambers) in a greenhouse in Auburn, AL, on 1 Mar. 2006, 6 June 2006, and 3 Jan. 2007, respectively. The experiment was repeated with all three species being planted 18 June 2007. Horhizotrons contained four glass quadrants extending away from the root ball providing a nondestructive method for measuring root growth of the same plant into different rhizosphere conditions. Each quadrant was filled with a native sandy loam soil in the lower 10 cm. The upper 10 cm of the quadrants were filled randomly with: 1) milled pine bark (PB); 2) peat (P); 3) cotton gin compost (CGC); or 4) more native soil with no organic matter (NOM). Horizontal root lengths (HRL, length measured parallel to the ground from the root ball to the root tip) of the five longest roots visible along each side of a quadrant were measured weekly for M. cerifera and I. floridanum and biweekly for K. latifolia. These measurements represented lateral growth and penetration of roots into surrounding substrates on transplanting. When roots of a species neared the end of the quadrant, the experiment was ended for that species. M. cerifera had the fastest rate of lateral root growth followed by I. floridanum and then by K. latifolia. In most cases, roots grew initially into the organic matter rather than the soil when organic matter was present. In general, HRL and root dry weight (RDW) of I. floridanum and K. latifolia were greatest in PB and P, whereas for M. cerifera, these were greatest in P. Differences in root growth among substrates were not as pronounced for M. cerifera as for the other species, perhaps as a result of its rapid increase in HRL. Increased root growth in PB and P may be attributed to the ideal physical and chemical properties of these substrates. Results suggest that planting above soil grade with organic matter may increase posttransplant root growth compared with planting at grade with no organic matter.

ABSTRACT Nitrogen and potassium fertilization and assessment of adequate nutritional status are essential for increasing fruit production of passion fruit. However, studies related to characterization of the leaf nutrient concentration and content in passion fruit with different production capacities are scarce in the literature in Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate macronutrient leaf concentration and content in different parts of the reproductive shoot of yellow passion fruit subjected to different ratios of N and K fertilization. The study was conducted in a randomized block design, with three replications, following a 4 x 6 factorial arrangement consisting of four cultivars of yellow passion fruit (BRS Gigante Amarelo, IAC 275, BRS Ouro Vermelho, and BRS Sol do Cerrado) and six application rates of N-K2O fertilizer (0-0, 50-125, 100-250, 150-375, 200-500, and 250-625 kg ha-1 year-1). Two leaf sampling methods were adopted (leaf located at a position adjacent to the fruit, and leaf located at the end of the reproductive branch) for nutritional assessment. The leaf located at the adjacent position had lower N, P, K, Mg, and S concentration and higher Ca concentration than the concentrations observed in the standard leaf. However, the higher leaf dry matter in adjacent leaves resulted in increased macronutrient concentration/content. The increase in N-K fertilizations inhibited Ca and Mg content in the leaves adjacent to the fruit of the Gigante Amarelo, IAC, and Ouro Vermelho passion fruit cultivars, but did not affect Ca and Mg content in the standard leaf. The passion fruit cultivars showed different leaf nutrient contents after N-K fertilization, indicating variable nutritional demands and the need for specific diagnostic methods for each cultivar.

Growth with organic fertilizers has increased in recent years because of the beneficial effect of organic matter on intensely cultivated soils and the high costs of mineral fertilizers. In order to evaluate the effects of organic compost doses produced from family farming waste on the growth and nutritional status of the passion fruit, an experiment was carried out in a greenhouse at the Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia, in Belém, State of Pará, in the period from March to June, 2012. The experimental design was completely randomized, with five treatments and four replications, with each experimental plot made up by a pot with a volume of 3.6 dm3 of soil and a yellow passion fruit seedling. Five doses of organic compost (0%, 15%, 30%, 45%, and 60%) were tested out of the total volume of the substrate. The compost was formed by mixing 10% poultry litter, 20% duck litter, 15% manioc husk, 15% cassava leaf, 15% bean straw, 15% rice husk, and 10% corn cob. The different amounts of organic compost were mixed in volumetric proportions of substrate of Yellow Latosol with a sandy texture, taken from the surface layer (0-20 cm). It was found that at 97 days, the best results were achieved at the dose of 60% of the compost. The content and accumulation of macronutrients in the foliar tissue of the yellow passion fruit plants followed this descending order: K > N > Ca > P > Mg ≥ S.

<p>No semiárido a ocorrência de longos períodos de estiagem vem tornado a irrigação uma pratica indispensável para exploração agrícola. Desta forma objetivou-se, com esta pesquisa, avaliar o crescimento e a produção de do algodoeiro cv. BRS Jady irrigado com águas de distintos níveis de salinidades e doses de matéria orgânica. O experimento foi conduzido utilizando-se um Neossolo Regolítico Eutrófico de textura franco arenosa no município de Campina Grande-PB. Adotou-se o delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 4 x 4, com três repetições, cujos os tratamentos resultaram da combinação de quatro níveis de condutividade elétrica da água (CEa) (1,7; 3,4; 5,1 e 6,8 dS m<sup>-1</sup>) e quatro doses de matéria orgânica (0; 2,5; 3,5 e 4,5% em base do volume do solo). A irrigação com água salina de CE a partir 1,7 dS m<sup>-1</sup> afetou negativamente o crescimento e a produção do algodoeiro cv. BRS Jady, provocando reduções no diâmetro de caule, altura de planta, área foliar, fitomassa seca total, massa de algodão em pluma, massa total de sementes e rendimento de fibra. A adubação orgânica com doses crescentes promoveu aumento na altura de plantas, área foliar e massa total de sementes do algodoeiro cv. BRS Jady. Houve interação entre os fatores aguas salinas e doses de matéria orgânica para diâmetro caulinar, fitomassa seca total e massa de algodão em pluma, sendo os maiores valores obtidos na das doses de 3,5 e 4,5% de matéria orgânica.</p><p align="center"><strong><em>Organic fertilization and waters of different salin levels in the cultivation of colored fiber cotton</em></strong></p><p><strong>Abstract</strong><strong>: </strong>In the semiarid the occurrence of long periods of drought has made irrigation an indispensable practice for agricultural exploration. The objective of this research was to evaluate the growth and yield of cotton cv. BRS Jady irrigated with waters of different levels of salinities and doses of organic matter. The experiment was conducted using a sandy loam texture Eutrophic Neolithic in the municipality of Campina Grande-PB. A randomized complete block design was used in a 4 x 4 factorial scheme with three replications, the treatments of which were the result of the combination of four levels of electrical conductivity (ECw, 1.7, 3.4, 5.1 And 6.8 dS m<sup>-1</sup>) and four doses of organic matter (0, 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5% on the basis of soil volume). Irrigation with EC saline water from 1.7 dS m<sup>-1</sup> negatively affected the growth and yield of cotton cv. BRS Jady, causing reductions in stem diameter, plant height, leaf area, total dry matter, feathered cotton mass, total seed mass and fiber yield. Organic fertilization with increasing doses promoted increase in plant height, leaf area and total seed mass of cotton cv. BRS Jady. There was interaction between saltwater factors and organic matter doses for shoot diameter, total dry matter and cotton mass in feathers, the highest values being obtained in the 3.5 and 4.5% organic matter doses.</p>

Major physico-chemical properties of mango orchard soils (Mangifera indica L.) in different sites of three hill districts, Rangamati, Khagrachari and Bandarban were evaluated. Soils were sandy loam in texture at all the sites except foot hill soil of Shapchari. Soil pH, organic matter, total N and available P varied from 4.76 to 5.58, 1.43 to 2.49 %, 0.10 to 0.16 %, 0.86 mg kg-1 to 2.69 mg kg-1 soil, respectively in surface soil of different sites of mango orchard. 1N NH4OAc extractable K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ ranged from 0.35 to 0.82, 2.50 to 3.66 and 0.60 to 1.57 cmol kg-1 of soils. Soil pH, organic matter, total N and available P varied significantly among the slope positions within the sites. Similar results were found in case of 1N NH4OAc extractable K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da adubação orgânica de fundação em cultivo de maracujazeiro sobre a atividade biológica no solo. Os experimentos foram conduzidos em Rio Branco, AC, em um ARGISSOLO VERMELHO AMARELO Alítico plíntico, textura franca arenosa e em Porto Acre, AC, em ARGISSOLO VERMELHO AMARELO distrófico plíntico de textura franco argilosa. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados com 5 tratamentos e 4 blocos e quatro amostras, totalizando 20 parcelas experimentais. Os tratamentos foram constituídos por covas cilíndricas com 0,15 m de profundidade e 2,0 m de diâmetro, aplicados 1/3 v/v de composto em diâmetros de 0,4 m; 0,8 m; 1,2 m; 1,6 m e 2,0 m, constituindo os diferentes tratamentos, com seus respectivos volumes: 0,007; 0,03; 0,06; 0,10; 0,16 m³, com amostragem realizadas a 0,5; 1,0 e 1,5 m do colo da planta. Foram avaliadas as características biológicas: respiração edáfica, respiração basal, biomassa microbiana e quociente metabólico. Foi verificado que em solos de textura franco arenosa sob oito anos de cultivo orgânico, o aumento da área adubada com composto orgânico não aumenta a atividade biológica do solo. Em solos de textura franco argilosa a atividade basal é maior com o aumento da adubação orgânica e a atividade microbiana maior com o distanciamento do colo da planta.
