This study aimed to analyze the performance of the vertical jump with counter movement (CMJ), in university handball athletes, immediately after the maximum strength training in multiple series and after 10 and 15min of rest. Twelve male athletes participated, age 20.9±2.4 years old, height 1.78±0.05m and Body Mass Index (BMI) 28.74±8.1kg/m2. After the tests and retests of 1 repetition maximum (1RM) for the dominant and non-dominant sides, in the leg extension, the volunteers performed crossover after 48 hours of the training sessions. CMJ measurements were collected before and immediately after each training protocol and after 10 and 15min of rest. Passive recovery between sets was three minutes. The intervals between training protocols were at least 45min. There were no statistical differences for the CMJ between the moments pre-, post-training session, 10 and 15min of rest in the different protocols, but progressive increases in the CMJ variables were observed, extending up to the 15th minute of rest, in all training protocols when comparing the results of the means of the CMJ variables of the moments post-training session, 10 and 15min of rest with the averages of the variables from the pre-training session, being more evident in the alternate unilateral protocol, which, unlike the other protocols of the study, performed series with the two lower limbs. It was evidenced that the training protocols of short duration and with high dynamic efforts, previously performed, influenced the performance of the CMJ, favoring for the transient improvement of the explosive muscular strength of the athletes.

SummaryStudy aim: To evaluate the effect of power and muscle strength training on skin temperature and the performance of the vertical jump with countermovement (CMJ).Material and methods: The sample consisted of four male basketball athletes of the under-17 category (age: 15.75 ± 1.0 years). 48 hours after anthropometric evaluation and determination of the loads for 1 repetition maximum (1RM) in the leg extension exercise, the athletes were subjected, through crossover-type entrance, to power (PTP) and strength (STP) training protocols. The protocols consisted of three sets with loads of 60% and 90% of 1RM for PTP and STP, respectively. Thermographic images of the thighs were taken before and immediately after each training session.Results: There were significant differences in results between the two training protocols, with increased total repetitions (t = 13.481; p < 0.05) and total training volume (t = 15.944; p < 0.05) in the PTP, and increase in the % of 1RM (t = 33.903; p < 0.05) and rating of perceived exertion (t = 6.755; p < 0.05) in the STP. The skin temperature before and after PTP and STP showed no significant differences. In the post-STP, the CMJ presented significant reductions in height (t = 3.318; p < 0.05), flight time (t = 3.620; p < 0.05), velocity (t = 3.502; p < 0.05), and force (t = 4.381; p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in pre-and post-STP CMJ.Conclusions: Power and maximum strength training in the leg extension exercise performed until concentric failure appears to be a method that induces thermal stress on the skin. This training directly influenced the performance of the vertical jump after the stimulus.

AbstractThe purpose of the present study was to identify the effects of a strength training program combined with specific plyometric exercises on body composition, vertical jump (VJ) height and strength development of lower limbs in elite male handball players. A 12-week program with combined strength and specific plyometric exercises was carried out for 7 weeks. Twelve elite male handball players (age: 21.6 ± 1.73) competing in the Portuguese Major League participated in the study. Besides the anthropometric measurements, several standardized jump tests were applied to assess VJ performance together with the strength development of the lower limbs in an isokinetic setting. No significant changes were found in body circumferences and diameters. Body fat content and fat mass decreased by 16.4 and 15.7% respectively, while lean body mass increased by 2.1%. Despite small significance, there was in fact an increase in squat jump (SJ), counter movement jump (CMJ) and 40 consecutive jumps after the training period (6.1, 3.8 and 6.8%, respectively). After the applied protocol, peak torque increased in lower limb extension and flexion in the majority of the movements assessed at 90°s-1. Consequently, it is possible to conclude that combining general strength-training with plyometric exercises can not only increase lower limb strength and improve VJ performance but also reduce body fat content.

Introdução: O nível de potência muscular pode ser considerado um dos aspectos fundamentais para o desempenho de jogadores de futsal.Objetivo: Avaliar o efeito das atividades realizadas durante uma partida de futsal sobre a potência muscular de membros inferiores.Métodos: Foram avaliados 12 atletas do sexo masculino de uma equipe da categoria Sub-17. A potência muscular de membros inferiores foi avaliada por meio do teste salto vertical, em três momentos: antes, no intervalo e logo após o término do jogo. Foram monitorados o volume total e o tempo de participação/recuperação dos atletas no jogo. Em estatística descritiva, utilizou-se média e desvio-padrão. Para avaliar a distribuição dos dados quanto à normalidade, foi utilizado o teste de Shapiro-Wilk. Para analisar as diferenças entre os três momentos, utilizou-se ANOVA one-way, seguida pelo post-hoc de Tukey.Resultados: Não houve diferenças estatisticamente significativas na potência muscular de membros inferiores nos diferentes momentos da partida, indicando não haver queda no desempenho físico dos atletas que exija potência muscular dos atletas dos atletas ao longo do jogo.Conclusão: Os resultados do presente estudo indicam que atletas treinados de futsal exibem equilíbrio entre o estresse fisiológico causado pelas ações intensas do jogo e a recuperação dos atletas durante o próprio jogo, assegurando o desempenho da potência muscular dos jogadores. Esses achados podem contribuir com técnicos e preparadores físicos de futsal, no planejamento do treino e na seleção/utilização dos atletas durante o jogo.Lower limbs muscle power in  different moments of an official futsal gameIntroduction: The muscular power level can be considered one of the fundamental aspects for the performance of futsal players.Objective: To evaluate the muscular power of lower limbs of futsal athletes in different moments of an official game.Methods: Twelve male athletes, 16.10 ± 0.49 years, 168.00 ± 5.19 cm, body weight of 59.30 ± 4.88 kg, and fat percentage of 10.90 ± 0.67%, belonging to a team in the U-17 (under seventeen years old) category. Athletes made the vertical jump before, during and after the game. The total volume and the time of participation / recovery of the athletes in the game were monitored. We used mean and standard deviation as descriptive statistics. Shapiro-Wilk test was used to evaluate the data normality. ANOVA one-way, followed by Tukey post-hoc was used to analyze the differences between the three moments.Results: Results did not indicate statistical differences muscle power of lower limbs in the different moments of the match, indicating that there is no decrease in athletes 'physical performance that requires athletes' muscular power during the game.Conclusion: The results of the present study indicate that trained futsal athletes show a balance between the physiological stress caused by the intense actions of the game and the recovery of the athletes during the game itself, ensuring the performance of the muscular power of the players. These findings may contribute to futsal coaches and coaches in planning the training and in the selection / use of athletes during the game.

Objective: Aim of this study was to investigate the combined and comparative training outcomes of plyometrics and dynamic stretching of lower limb muscle groups on vertical jump performance in male and female collegiate volleyball players. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out as two training sessions in a week, for eight weeks duration. The total number of participants was 90 male and 90 female collegiate volleyball players aged 18-22 years. All the participants were recreational players and they were playing one hour daily in the evening. They were randomly distributed into three male groups (Group 1, Group 2 & Group 3) and three female groups (Group 4, Group 5 & Group 6) with 30 participants in each group. All the participants underwent Sargent vertical jump performance test before starting the training session it was repeated in every two weeks of training program. Results: Plyometrics and plyometrics with dynamic stretching led to significant improvements in vertical jump height (VJH), and this improvement was progressed after every two weeks of training. However, the control groups did not display any improvement. The effect of training was significantly higher in male and female groups who have performed plyometrics with lower limbs dynamic stretching as compared with the groups that performed only plyometric exercises (p<0.05). Compared to females, male participants had a better improvement of VJH in both training groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: It can be concluded that two sessions of plyometric exercise training per week for eight weeks can improve the ability of VJH in male and female collegiate volleyball players. However, combined training of lower body plyometrics and lower limbs dynamic stretching had better results in terms of vertical jump performance.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Several strength training protocols have been tested in the search for systemic adaptations to improve functionality in the elderly. For this purpose, integrated exercises aimed at improving essential movements can be an interesting strategy to improve the performance of activities of the daily living. Objective: To compare the effects of eight weeks of functional training with traditional strength training on the physical fitness of sedentary elderly women. Methods: Thirty-two elderly women were divided into functional training group (FT, n=16) and traditional training group (TT, n=16). For the verification of functional responses, the Senior Fitness Test battery was used, as well as complementary tests of strength and muscular power. The data were analyzed using a 2x2 ANOVA with post hoc Sidak test to verify the differences between the groups. Results: At the end of eight weeks, when compared to TT group, the FT group showed significant increases in balance/agility variables (p=0.01; +7.6%), lower limbs strength (p=0.04; +15.3%), upper limbs strength (p=0.05; +11.7%), and cardiorespiratory power (p=0.05; +10.7%). However, in relation to flexibility tests and conventional tests of maximum dynamic force and muscular strength, there were no statistically significant differences between the groups. Conclusions: Both interventions are efficient to improve physical fitness of sedentary elderly women; however, functional training induces better adaptive responses to functionality when compared with traditional training. La realización de tareas diarias, como caminar, subir escaleras o levantar  objetos, requiere fuerza y potencia muscular. Las reducciones asociadas a la edad en la fuerza y la potencia pueden afectar la capacidad del  adulto mayor para  llevar a cabo este tipo de actividades. Objetivo: El propósito de este estudio fue examinar los efectos de dos tipos de entrenamiento en fuerza (PEF) de 16 semanas, uno realizado a alta velocidad (GAV), versus uno a baja velocidad (GBV), sobre, la fuerza y potencia máxima muscular, en un grupo de adultas mayores. Metodología: 86 mujeres con edades entre 60-81 años participaron de forma voluntaria en el estudio y fueron asignadas de forma aleatoria al GAV (Tres series a una velocidad de 0.60m/s, con pérdidas máxima del 10% de velocidad) o al GBV. (Tres series de 10 repeticiones al 70% de 1RM) Los grupos realizaron tres entrenamientos semanales. Antes y después del PE se evaluó: la fuerza máxima (1RM),  la potencia pico (Pp) y  la velocidad media propulsiva (VMP),  en extensión en piernas y de brazos, la fuerza prensil, la velocidad de la marcha (VM),  y la fuerza resistencia y agilidad (batería senior fitness test). Resultados: después del periodo de entrenamiento se observaron mejoras significativas (p <0.05) en todas las pruebas en los dos grupos. Sin embargo, los resultados obtenidos por el GAV fueron significativamente (p<0.05) superiores a los del GBV, en las pruebas de capacidad funcional, VM, VMP y Pp. En las pruebas de fuerza máxima y fuerza prensil las diferencias no fueron significativas. Conclusión: El entrenamiento en fuerza realizado a altas velocidades parece tener un mejor efecto en el fuerza resistencia y agilidad y en la potencia muscular, que el entrenamiento de fuerza realizado a baja velocidad.Abstract. Performing daily tasks, such as walking, climbing stairs or lifting objects, requires strength and muscular power. Age-related reductions in strength and potency may affect the ability of the elderly to carry out these types of activities. Objective: the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a sixteen-week strength training program (PE) performed at high speed (GAV) versus a traditionally executed program (GBV), on functional performance, maximum strength, and muscle power in a group of elderly women. Methodology: 86 women aged between 60-81 years old participated voluntarily in the study and were assigned randomly to the GAV (three series at 0.60m/s speed, with maximum losses of 10% speed) or to the GBV (three series with three sets at 70% of 1RM). Both groups performed three weekly training sessions. The maximum strength of upper and lower limbs (1RM), prehensile strength, walking speed, maximum power, mean propulsive velocity (MPV), and functional performance (senior fitness test) were evaluated before and after the PE. Results: significant improvements were observed (p<0.05) in all the tests in the two groups after the twelve weeks of training. However, the results of GAV were significantly (p <0.05) higher than those of GBV regarding agility and dynamic equilibrium, stationary walking, sitting and standing, walking speed over 4 and 6 meters/hour, MPV, and peak power. The differences were not significant in the tests of maximum strength and prehensile force. Conclusion: Strength training performed at high speed seems to have a better effect on functional performance and muscle power than strength training performed at low speed.

OBJETIVO: Determinar a correlação entre a percepção subjetiva do esforço (PSE) e a fadiga neuromuscular dos membros inferiores por meio de saltos mensurados no pré e pós treino em atletas de futebol.MÉTODOS: Quatorze atletas de futebol (sub 17) foram monitorados ao longo de quatro sessões de treinamento. Com as seguintes características: estatura (173±6,81cm), peso (64,43±5,80kg) e percentual de gordura (14,74±3,11). A PSE foi monitorada por meio do aplicativo e-trimp, 15 minutos após o final de cada sessão de treinamento. Os saltos foram avaliados por meio da plataforma de salto Jump System Pro, 10 minutos, antes e depois das sessões de treinamento. Os dados foram analisados no programa estatístico SPSS por meio da estatística descritiva e correlação de Spearman.RESULTADOS: A correlação entre a PSE e a diferença da potência relativa do salto vertical (pré/pós treino) foi fraca para todas as sessões. As sessões 1 e 4 apresentaram correlação negativa (r=-0,184, p=0,530; r=-0,159, p=0,587). As sessões 2 e 3 apresentaram correlação positiva (r=0,010, p=0,973; r=0,373, p=0,188), respectivamente.CONCLUSÃO: Não foram observadas correlações estatisticamente significativas entre a PSE e a potência relativa de salto nos atletas avaliados.ABSTRACT. The correlation between the rating of perceived exertion and neuromuscular fatigue on the lower body in soccer athletes.OBJECTIVE: Define the correlation between the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and the power of the lower limbs before and after training in soccer athletes.METHODS: Were monitored 14 soccer athletes (under 17 years old) over four training sessions. With the following characteristics: height (173±6.81cm), weight (64.43±5.80kg) and fat percentage (14.74±3.11). RPE was monitored through the e-trimp app, 15 minutes after the end of each training session. Jumps were evaluated through the Jump System Pro jumping platform, 10 minutes before and after the training sessions. Data was analyzed in the SPSS statistical program using descriptive statistics and Spearman correlation.RESULTS: The correlation between the RPE and the difference of the relative power of the vertical jump test (pre/post training) was weak for all the sessions. Sessions 1 and 4 presented a negative correlation (r=-0.184, p=0.530; r=-0.159, p=0.587). Sessions 2 and 3 showed a positive correlation (r=0.010, p=0.973; r=0.373, p=0.188), respectively.CONCLUSION: There were no statistically significant correlations between the RPE and the relative jumping power in the evaluated athletes.

Most strength and conditioning coaches deal with the question in the training plan, how to supplement specific exercises, or which non-specific exercises would be the most suitable for achieving the set purpose. This study aims to assess what strength transfer with a focus on the lower limbs is projected from the selected strength intervention program (the right leg exercises only single-joint exercises: leg extension on machine and leg curl; the left leg exercises only multi-joint exercises: deadlift and leg press) to the force of the knee joint flexors and extensors during the eccentric and the concentric contraction. In one training session, the participants repeated every exercise five times in four series. The load intensity was around 90% of 1RM and was increased by 5% after the first and the fifth week. The rest interval was always three minutes long. For the left lower limb, the highest transfer (0.20) was from the leg press to the knee joint extensor at the eccentric contraction and from the deadlift was the highest transfer (0.19) to the knee joint extensor at the eccentric contraction. For the right lower limb, the highest transfer (0.53) was from the leg extension on a machine to the knee joint flexor at the concentric contraction and from the lying leg curl was the highest transfer (0.47) to the knee joint flexor at the concentric contraction.

The chasse step is one of the most important footwork maneuvers used in table tennis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the lower limb kinematic differences of table tennis athletes of different genders when using the chasse step. The 3D VICON motion analysis system was used to capture related kinematics data. The main finding of this study was that the step times for male athletes (MA) were shorter in the backward phase (BP) and significantly longer in the forward phase (FP) than for female athletes (FA) during the chasse step. Compared with FA, knee external rotation for MA was larger during the BP. MA showed a smaller knee flexion range of motion (ROM) in the BP and larger knee extension ROM in the FP. Moreover, hip flexion and adduction for MA were significantly greater than for FA. In the FP, the internal rotational velocity of the hip joint was significantly greater. MA showed larger hip internal rotation ROM in the FP but smaller hip external rotation ROM in the BP. The differences between genders can help coaches personalize their training programs and improve the performance of both male and female table tennis athletes.
