Fine mechanical and thermal properties of metal matrix composites make them more demanding in various fields such as automotive, aerospace and structural applications. In this paper an effort has been made to fabricate a metal matrix composite, Titanium-di-oxide and silicon carbide reinforced in Al 6061 matrix using stir casting method. The reinforcements were added in 2%, 4% and 6% of weight to Al6061 to fabricate the metal matrix composite. Castings were machined and the specimens were prepared for various testing. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, hardness, and corrosion analysis were studied for various compositions of reinforcements. And then the reinforcement was analyzed and studied for the improvement of mechanical properties in the material.

Metal Matrix Composites possesses high mechanical properties compared to unreinforced materials. Aluminium Matrix Composites (AMC) is attracted in the emerging world because of its low cost, less weight and enhanced mechanical properties. In the present study the enhancement in mechanical properties like hardness and tensile strength of AMCs by reinforcing AA 6061 matrix with silicon carbide (SiC) and boron carbide (B4C) particles are analyzed. By enhanced stir casting method aluminium matrix was reinforced with boron carbide particulates and silicon carbide particulates with the various weight percentage of 2.5 %,5% and 7.5%.The tensile strength and hardness was found to increase with the increase in wt% of the reinforcement. From the analysis it is observed that the mechanical property of B4C reinforced AMC is significantly good compared to SiC reinforced AMC.

AbstractThe effects of micro and nano sized reinforcement particles on microstructure and mechanical properties of aluminium alloy-based metal matrix composites were investigated in this study. AlSi9Cu3 alloy was reinforced with micro and nano sized ceramic reinforcement particles at different weight fractions by using a stir casting method. The mechanical tests (hardness, three point bending) were performed to determine the mechanical properties of AlSi9Cu3 alloy-based microcomposites (AMMCs) and nanocomposites (AMMNCs). The experimental results have shown that the size and weight fraction of reinforcement particles have a strong influence on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of AlSi9Cu3 alloy-based microcomposites and nanocomposites. The relative densities of all AMMC and AMMNC samples are lower than unreinforced AlSi9Cu3 alloy due to porosity formation with the increase of weight fraction of reinforcement particles. As weight fraction increases, hardness values of AMMCs and AMMNCs increase. Maximum flexural strength can be obtained at 3.5wt.% for the AMMC sample with microsized Al2O3 particles and at 2wt.% for the AMMNC sample with nano-sized Al2O3 particles. After the weight fractions exceed these values, flexural strengths of both AMMCs and AMMNCs decrease due to clustering of Al2O3 particles.

It is well known that the addition of ceramic phases in an alloy e.g. aluminum, in form of fibers or particles influences its mechanical properties. This leads to a new generation of materials, which are called metal matrix composites (MMCs). They have found a lot of application during the last twenty-five years due to their low density, high strength and toughness, good fatigue and wear resistance. Aluminum matrix composites reinforced by ceramic particles are well known for their good thermophysical and mechanical properties. As a result, during the last years, there has been a considerable interest in using aluminum metal matrix composites in the automobile industry. Automobile industry use aluminum alloy matrix composites reinforced with SiC or Al2O3 particles for the production of pistons, brake rotors, calipers and liners. However, no reference could be cited in the international literature concerning aluminum reinforced with TiB particles and Fe and Cr, although these composites are very promising for improving the mechanical properties of this metal without significantly alter its corrosion behavior. Several processing techniques have been developed for the production of reinforced aluminum alloys. This paper is concerned with the study of TiB, Fe and Cr reinforced aluminum produced by the stir-casting method.

In this experiment, comparison analysis of mechanical properties, porosity and grain size of Pure Al (powder), 95%AL + 5% B4C (With sand casting method) and 95%AL + 5% B4C (With ECAP method) are determined. The ECAP method value is much greater than the sand casting method, because of metal matrix composite microstructure refinement during the pressing operation. Because of material porosity value decreases, powder particle consolidation, the closure of porosity, grain refinement and improve in dislocation occurs as ECAP method gives the results of Mechanical properties as like tensile strength 105.8Mpa, Hardness 94HV, density 888.88kg/m3values increase. At the same time, porosity and grain size value will be reduced because of individual power consolidation happening during ECAP methods like as 1.63% and 8μm. In this metal matrix composite is applied to aeronautical and automobile industry

In this present research particulate reinforced aluminium metal matrix composites are developed by using sand mould and liquid stir casting processing route in which AA5052 reinforced with 5 wt. % SiC particulates of 63µm particle size. The density, porosity, micro-hardness, and compressive strength of SiC particulate reinforced AA5052 MMC were investigated and compared these properties with similar properties of unreinforced AA5052. The microstructure of the developed composite was also analysed by using optical microscopy, SEM, and XRD. Developed particulate reinforced Al metal matrix composite gives improved hardness and compressive strength as compared to the unreinforced AA5052. The addition of 5 wt. % SiC particulates increases the density of AA5052.

In most of the engineering applications such as aviation, defence, marine and automotive requires components with light weight and along with favorable mechanical properties; this demand perhaps satisfied by metal matrix composites (MMCs) of aluminium by virtue of its distinguished achievement. Also MMCs suffer from insufficient process stability, in-adequate economic efficiency and reliability. In the present research work an experiment was developed to synthesize metal matrix composite adopting Aluminium Alloy (AA) 5083 as matrix material reinforced with graphite particulates (6 wt %, 8 wt % & 10 wt %) using two stage in-situ stir casting process. Experiments were implemented to analyze mechanical and tribological properties like ultimate tensile strength, microhardness, wear characteristics and corrosion properties. From the above investigations, it is revealed that microhardness increases with decrease in tensile strength with upsurge in more wt % of reinforcement. Due to the very high self-lubricating property of graphite significant reduction in wear can be observed with deepen in wt % of graphite. Also corrosion rate decreases with more amount of graphite particulate when compared with base matrix material.

Aluminium based composite are getting a vast scope nowadays because of its properties and availability. In the present work, fly ash and AL2O3 reinforced composite are prepared using stir casting technique for varying wt.% (fly ash 3% and AL2O3 3%, 6% & 9%). Hardness and tensile properties were determined, with the addition of reinforcement the properties are improved compared to the parent metal alone. Based on the evaluation 6% AL2O3 and 3%fly ash gives a better result as compared to other composition.
