The field of academic development in South Africa has produced a wealth of research over the thirty years of its existence. The impact of globalisation, however, has meant that local research in the field of academic development is often regarded as being of lesser value than knowledge from the global North and the so-called ‘best practices’ that emerge from it. The impact of uncritical acceptance of ‘best practice’ approaches from the global North is that understandings of teaching and learning tend to be divorcedfrom the context of practice. As a result, the application of such approaches often failsto accommodate the diverse learning needs of students and are not responsive to complex institutional and global South contexts.

The paper discusses the impact of IT/ICT on society by analyzing the effects it has on subjects and organizations. The recent proposal of frameworks for digital competence assessment and the construction of suitable instruments helping students in the acquisition of this competence are the main reason for the transfer to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). In this paper, the author compares knowledge phenomena in subjects with the strategies of knowledge management in the organizations. A framework for benchmarking best practices in SME and organizations is also given on the basis of the results obtained in virtual campuses. The author presents instruments for the acquisition of further information from all stakeholders, and possible interventions toward the improvement of digital processes in SMEs and organizations are discussed.

Air pollution is estimated to cause more than 7000 deaths annually in Sweden alone. To reduce the impact of air pollution and to plan and build sustainable cities, it is vital that research is translated into efficient decisions and practice. However, how do civil servants in a municipality access research results? How do they normally find relevant information, and what obstacles are there to accessing and applying research results? As part of the collaborative and transdisciplinary research project Air Pollution Research in Local Environmental Planning (ARIEL), these questions were explored through interviews and seminars with civil servants within the Malmö Municipality Environmental Office. We found that the civil servants generally have proficiency in processing research results, but often do not use such results as part of their everyday decision making and practices. Instead, the data and measurements used are mostly produced case-by-case within the municipal sector itself. Information about best practices is also collected via a number of knowledge access practices, involving the Internet or social networks within other municipalities. Lack of time, paywalls, and the insufficient applicability of research hinder the dissemination of up-to-date results. This slows down the process whereby research, funded by tax-money, can be put to best practice in the effort to create healthy and sustainable cities.

University-based scientists hold the collective responsibility for educating the next generation of citizens, scientists and voters, but the degree to which they are individually trained and rewarded for this pursuit is variable. This F1000Research channel has its origin in a Society for Experimental Biology Conference held in Prague, 2015 and brings together researchers who excel at undergraduate education or the scholarship of teaching and learning to discuss challenges and best practices in contemporary higher science education.

Developed by Dodge (1995), WebQuest is an inquiry-based teaching tool, in which students of all ages and levels participate in an authentic task that use pre-designed, pre-defined internet resources, though other print resources can also be used. Learners will put the focus on gathering, summarizing, synthesizing, and evaluating the information within clearly defined parameters in order to accomplish an authentic task set by the instructor. WebQuest takes a problem-solving approach and exhibits a clear structure that guides the learning processes and interactions (Dodge, 2001), and can be used for different subject areas across age levels, from young children to adult learners (Ezell, Klein, Hines, & Hall, 2003). In teacher preparation, research has shown that WebQuest enhanced problem-solving skills, higher order thinking, motivation, creativity, critical thinking, active learning, connection to authentic contexts (Abu-Elwan, 2007; Allan & Street, 2007; Lim & Hernandez, 2007) and assisted in bridging the theory to practice gap (Lim & Hernandez, 2007). It should be noted that most studies were conducted on the subject areas of Math, literacy, or science. In Singapore context, many local teachers still havent heard of WebQuest and learned about using WebQuest in their teaching. Further, few research studies have focused on establishing WebQuest as an evidence-based practice in enhancing teaching and learning or a pedagogy promoting Universal Design for Learning and inquiry based learning. This research project intends to introduce WebQuest, to be modelled and integrated in a course training special education pre-service teachers (allied educators) in Singapore. Specifically, the following research questions were posed: (1) Does the use of WebQuest in teacher preparation promote special education teachers understanding on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in accommodating students with diverse learning needs? (2) Does WebQuest a useful tool to enhance teachers higher order thinking, engagement, creativity, and collaborative learning skills? (3) Does the use of WebQuest in teacher preparation foster stronger desires for teachers to integrate ICT in teaching and learn more about WebQuest? Forty one teacher responded to a survey questionnaire after experiencing WebQuest developed by the course instructor in teacher preparation program. Teachers also learned about WebQuest as an Universal Design for Learning tool for students with diverse learning needs. The majoirty of teachers indicated strong favors over WebQuest activities over traditional teacher-directed learning methods. All participants found WebQuest helpful in accommodating individual differences and learning styles (Agree: 68.3%; Strongly agree: 31.7%). Forty teachers (N=41) reflected that they used more critical thinking and problem solving skills when they engaged in the WebQuest activities developed by the instructor (39% strongly agree and 56.1% agree). Thirty nine teachers agreed that they were required to use more creativity when they engaged in the WebQuest activities (24.4% of teachers stronly agree and 68.3% agree). The majority of teachers (26.8% strongly agree and 68.3% agree) felt that they know more about ways to incorporate technology for teaching and learning after experiencing WebQuest in this class. They also indicated that they would like to use more technology and web resources in teaching in the future after learning about WebQuest (41.5% strongly agree and 53.7% agree).

Advances in technologies have changed the process of learning, not just in formal educational settings but continuing education as well. Mobile learning is a part of a new learning landscape and offers the opportunity for a spontaneous, personal, informal, and situated learning. With the use of mobile technology in education, online learning communities can incorporate students from different backgrounds with vastly diverse learning styles into an educational setting. This chapter analyses the opportunities mobile learning presents and the impact mobile devices have had on teaching and learning practices and the barriers and challenges to support competitive educational experiences.

This paper is aimed to analyse the strategies applied for the best practices in Anna Centenary Library (ACL), Chennai. Best practice is a technique, used to advance the existing work process of an organization like library and information centers to achieve its purpose successfully. In the present day, public libraries are also started to focus on best practices as one of the services to retain the public. Anna Centenary Library falls under public library category, which follows best practices such as Orientation programme for civil service aspirants, weekly children programme and Ponmaalai Pozhudhu programme. A study was conducted among the readers of the library to analyze and know the impact of best practices followed by ACL particularly Ponmaalai Pozhudhu programme. It was revealed that Ponmaalai Pozhudhu Programme had a great impact among the readers of all the best practices being conducted by the library.

The IPMA HR Benchmarking Committee has identified a series of successful approaches—“best practices”—in key human resource areas from the 2001–2002 HR Benchmarking Survey. The primary purpose of the benchmarking project is to provide human resource practitioners with tools, models, skills, methods, and data to improve the effectiveness of their human resource programs for their customers. The main goal of the benchmarking project is to: identify, measure, and share the best practices of leading HR organizations so that others can compare their practices to these HR organizations and identify opportunities to improve their own organizations. Rarely can a program or solution seamlessly transfer to every other organization, but the IPMA HR Benchmarking Committee will feature successful models for HR professionals to review and determine whether they may adopt or adapt the practice—or elements of the practice—in their own organizations. In conjunction with IPMA's available benchmarking data, the HR Benchmarking Committee will use the following criteria to determine which agencies have “potential” best practices. Training and Development was one of the “best practice” program areas identified. Linda Bjornberg, a member of the Benchmarking Committee, discusses the innovative and successful efforts of the selected HR organizations in measuring the impact of training on their organizations' missions. The presence of the Covid-19 Virus in the world has not only changed the learning culture, but has become a new challenge in developing teacher creativity in the teaching and learning process. This conventional learning pattern that has evolved into technology-based distance learning requires teachers to be able to adapt and adapt to the limited learning needs of students during the pandemic. Digital technology tools are currently very developed, but they are enough to help educators to adapt to the diverse learning needs of today's students. So it is necessary to use the right learning media in carrying out learning during the pandemic. This training aims to train abilities and skills in increasing the creativity of teachers in using interactive learning media during the pandemic using the Quizizz platform. Quizizz is an interactive game-based online platform that can be used in a fun teaching and learning process during the Covid-19 pandemic by utilizing an Android smartphone. The method used is the lecture method and interactive training by involving the teacher as a simulation model.

The outcome of this paper is primarily to survey and analyse student interactions with electronic conferencing systems and to reflect on the impact of such a system on the students’ learning within an open distance learning context. This pilot study is articulated within action research methodology to generate critical reflection on collaborative, online environments such as electronic conferencing systems for teaching and learning. This study aims to assess the benefits and feasibility of integrating such a system within the University of South Africa’s (UNISA) current organisational structure. These results are intended to generate debate and further research within the university into possible evolution in practice within the institution that would address contemporary learning needs of students. As this was a feasibility study, a comparative study of the current tools available for electronic conferencing was warranted. The findings of this study may be used as a basis for further investigation on the challenges that might face the university if online learning were to be implemented. The success of the online conference is nevertheless significant within the context of the University of South Africa. It provides the opportunity to re-examine the current print-based delivery system, and to devise strategies and solutions to significantly increase the quality of learning within the organisation.
