In general, the benefits of tourism reasonably reinforce a better living in Batur, these such as better economic, infrastructure and landscaping; more appreciation and attention to natural environment and culture; broader social interaction and wider perspective and horizon of the people. Nonetheless, more efforts need to be exerted for better tourism development results. Currently, Batur tourism management operates in fractions, to maximize the benefits from tourism, a systematic and integrated management needs to be devised with the collaboration of stakeholders that enables the provision of quality tourism products and services, an integrated promotion, the availability of tourism facilities and infrastructure that harmoniously coexist with nature, the establishment of network, and the application of regulations that support sustainable tourism.

ABSTRACT Tourism development today is directed to achieve sustainable tourism development following the community-based empowerment principles. Merauke is located in the eastern part of Indonesia that is rich of natural and cultural resources  potential for tourism. Tourism could be a solution to reduce poverty, especially through community-based tourism. Communities reap economic benefits from tourism industry by the increase of local income, hence the social welfare. On the contrary, poor management may lead the emerging Merauke tourism into environmental ecosystem damage. Such a threat to environmental sustainability outweighs any economic benefits because future generation will suffer from the inherited damaged environment. This article will discuss Merauke community participation in fostering the development of sustainable tourism through community-based tourism, that is maintaining sustainability of the environment and ecosystem while considering local communities sociocultural conditions. In doing so, this study uses a descriptive-qualitative approach. Data was collected from document tracking and interviews with Merauke Regional Government, WWF activists, and community leaders. The findings indicated that local communities supported Merauke tourism by developing entrepreneurship in tourism industry, increasing community social control in protecting the environment and enhancing the role of local customary leaders in supporting the tourism development.

Indonesia has made tourism as the leading sector in economy. This has prompted many regions to compete to develop their tourism potential, including Kota Serang - Banten by launching Kampung Wisata Pancer. Kampung Pancer is closely related to the history of the Karangantu Harbour area, which was an international port during the Banten Kingdom era. Not many studies have discussed about the development of sustainable tourism in the Banten region. This article aims to show the progress of tourism in Banten today. Its development has allowed tourism to stand on its own feet. This study is based on an overview of secondary sources and observations and personal interviews with several informants and tourism experts. The results of this study showed that the tourism development efforts in Kampung Wisata Pancer are not in accordance with the concept of sustainable tourism development. Keywords: Tourism Village, Community Based Tourism, Sustainable Tourism Development
