This work describes the employment situation of new professors joining the teaching staff of the University of Cadiz over the past 5 years. It examines the situation of this group in 2015, a time in which the economic crisis affected both Spain and the university system, comparing this situation to that of 2019. It is a quantitative study using an on-line questionnaire that was distributed in both 2015 and 2019. Clearly, the university’s economic situation conditioned the professional development of these professors who carry out both research and teaching tasks. For years, the crisis stalled the publication of stable job offers for these new professors, preventing them from having an optimistic outlook with regard to their professional future. This study suggests that the current situation may be creating a sense of burnout in the teaching staff, perhaps due to the university’s failure to intervene in the increased depersonalization and harsh treatment of its students. Given this situation, universities may be turning into a breeding ground for pathologies related to teachers’ malaise.

The article analyses the experience of organizing International Educational Exhibitions in Ukraine in 2016 – 2020. The essence of such concepts as "international educational exhibition", "international educational exhibition space", "facilitative support of professional development of research and teaching staff" is defined. The structural elements of the International Educational Exhibition and the stages of a higher educational institution participation in the exhibition activity (preparatory, direct participation, analysis of the achieved results) are considered. The authors of the article present systematized experience of facilitative support of professional development of research and teaching staff provided by specialists of the Department of Scientific Work of the State Institution of Higher Education "University of Educational Management" of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine in the process of preparing, holding and analysing results of International Educational Exhibitions, such as "Innovation in Modern Education", "Modern Educational Institutions", "Education and Career – Student's Day", "Education and Career". The types of organizational and coordination activities are determined, a detailed list of actions of the process of facilitative support by the specialists of the Department of Scientific Work of research and teaching staff as exhibitors and visitors of the exhibition is presented. Methodical structuring and algorithmizing of types of organizational and coordination activities and a detailed list of actions of the facilitation process are described in the following stages: 1) preparation of research and teaching staff (exhibitors and visitors) to participate in International Educational Exhibitions; 2) direct participation of research and teaching staff (exhibitors and visitors) in the International Educational Exhibitions; 3) analysis of the results of participation of research and teaching staff (exhibitors and visitors) in International Educational Exhibitions. The authors have created a classification of events of the International Educational Exhibition according to the congress, competition and exponential components. Statistics of the number of planned and conducted events within the International Educational Exhibition activities in Ukraine in 2016 – 2020 are presented. Emphasis is placed on changing the form of exhibitions from offline to online format due to the COVID–19 pandemic and lockdown (quarantine restrictions) in 2020. Recommendations for higher educational institutions to maintain an integrated information base of exhibition educational activities with detailed information on the activities within the exponential, competitive and congress programs of the exhibition.

An acceptable degree of digital literacy has always been present among the pharmacy teaching staff in Basel, with PowerPoint being the main vehicle to present teaching materials in front of full or half classes. Because cell phones became inseparable from students over the past years, mobile voting (movo.ch) or e-quizzes (mentimeter.com) have been regularly used to hold the attention of all students during collective teaching. Moreover, e-assessment on iPad® with the software BeAxi (www.k2prime.com) was introduced in 2012 and is currently used for all evaluations and exams. Suddenly over the night of March 16, 2020, our university, as all universities around the world, had to transfer all courses to an online format and to empower lecturers to teach from their home. This paper offers one perspective for how this digitial experiment unfolded at the University of Basel in Basel, Switzerland.

In Spain, the functions assigned to the University are varied and have changed over time. Currently, it is considered that university activity should be focused on improving the well-being of the society in which the university is located. Thus, any quality control of the Spanish university system must consider whether the university is fulfilling the purposes that society has assigned to it. In Spain, the task of quality control of universities is mainly assigned to the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA). In principle, through different programs, this agency evaluates different aspects of the Universities. However, as can be seen in this research, the control activity is limited to university degrees and the activity of the teaching staff. Moreover, this control hardly measures to what extent the University system is achieving its goals.

Visible Learning has been one of the most influential research initiatives conducted in education in the past few decades, and at the same time, instructional coaching is becoming one of the most popular forms of professional development. This paper considers how the implementation of Visible Learning may be supported through instructional coaches by: (a) offering a brief summary of the central tenants of Visible Learning; (b) summarizing the foundational research on instructional coaching conducted at the Kansas Coaching Project at The University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning; (c) describing what those findings reveal about effective instructional coaching practices; and (d) pointing out how the research findings suggest that instructional coaching should be used to support the implementation of Visible Learning or any other educational innovations.

Purpose As the global war of talent is prevalent across different industries, universities are also facing an acute shortage of faculty members because of massification of higher education system in the past two decades. The tremendous increase in the number of higher education institutions has made attracting talented professors a challenging necessity for the university management as employers. The present study, therefore, carries out a scale development exercise and explores the attractive dimensions of Indian universities as employers. Design/methodology/approach With the help of principle component analysis, exploratory factor analysis was carried out to obtain five significant constructs of employer attractiveness in Indian universities. Findings The dimensions identified in the study includes fairness and work–life balance; teaching environment and compensation and benefits; research resources and career development; organizational integrity and commitment to quality; and organizational culture consisting of respect and recognition. Practical implications The finding provides valuable insights for the university management and government bodies and posits to assist them in formulating policies with regard to attracting competent teaching staff. Originality/value Although employer attractiveness has gained scholarly attention in the past two decades, study exploring the dimensionality of employer attractiveness in the context of academic institutions and universities has not been conducted so far. The present study, therefore, is one of the pioneers in this realm.

This issue marks the last edition of Clinical and Investigative Medicine under the leadership of Dr. David Bevan. Dr. Bevan has been the Editor-in-Chief of CIM for the past six years. During this time, CIM, as the official journal of the Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation, underwent several major changes. First, CIM was bought from the CMA and is now independently produced. Second, CIM went from a hard copy journal to an on-line journal with open access six months after publication of each issue. Third, the journal now levies publication page charges from its authors with members of CSCI exempted from these charges. Dr. Bevan succeeded in not only maintaining CIM as a MedLine and PubMed referenced journal, but also in increasing its prominence as an open access type on-line journal, while at the same time turning around its finances. The number of submissions to CIM has more than doubled since CIM instituted these changes, and CIM went from a deficit journal to making a small profit: a true great beginning of a new era for CIM. We thank Dr. Bevan for his important contributions. With the retirement of Dr. Bevan, CSCI is happy to announce that Dr. Jonathan Angel from Ottawa will take over from Dr. Bevan as Editor-in-Chief from January 1, 2010. Dr. Angel is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and a recognized expert in infectious diseases. He is widely published and brings a wealth of expertise to CIM. Under the stewardship of Dr. Angel, CIM will build on the foundation laid by Dr. Bevan and will continue to publish high quality original research related to any aspect of clinical investigation. At CSCI, we are all looking forward to working with Dr. Angel to increase CIM’s scope and impact factor. We are convinced that Dr. Angel will have a successful tenure at CIM and look forward to seeing the Journal grow further.

The article reveals the evaluation of the activities carried out by scientific and pedagogical staff in domestic higher education institutions from a process point of view and the standpoint of the result. The main types of assessment used in higher education institutions are described. The results obtained during the analysis of scientific publications, normative documents and questionnaires of teachers and managers confirmed the massive rating of the activities of scientific and pedagogical workers, its superiority among other types of assessment. According to the materials available in the open Internet access, a comparative analysis of the rating policy of 20 higher education institutions, located in different regions of Ukraine, was carried out. It was found that in each university the determinant of the rating policy is Development Strategy, according to which the evaluation of research and teaching staff is positioned as an important procedure for internal quality assurance of higher education and a factor in stimulating professional development of teachers. Based on a comparative analysis of the regulatory framework, criteria, indicators and evaluation procedures inherent in different institutions of higher education, common features and characteristics of rating evaluation of research and teaching staff. The personal and institutional dimensions of the significance of various evaluation of the activity of scientific and pedagogical workers are revealed. Emphasis is placed on modern indicators and problematic evaluation issues identified in the process of studying domestic practices. Insufficient use of information collected through rating assessment for prognostic purposes is emphasized. The tendency of updating criteria and indicators of a rating estimation of activities carried out by scientific and pedagogical workers of universities is established. An objective relationship between the establishment of coefficients for the rating of the main types of professional activities of research and teaching staff (educational, scientific, methodological, organizational and educational) and the priority of the holding activities for the university at the time of the rating.

Modern-day authoring systems have made the production of CAL applications so easy that people with little computer literacy are able quite quickly to create elaborate multimedia applications. The point, however, is that while so many of us have become authors in the past few years, the objective of our creations has been somewhat missed. It is all to easy to see visually impressive multimedia CAL, and to convince ourselves that they represent good CAL material. An application may be quickly sanctioned, produced and implemented at universities, then attention is focused on to the next project. While evaluation is normally costed into a project, various constraints, such as shifting personnel or additional demands on funds, limit the evaluation of the application to ascertain whether the investment of producing it was worthwhile. The Hypertext Support Unit (HSU) at the University of Kent was set up in 1992 to promote the pervasive use of hypertext across the campus. In its role as a support unit, it facilitates the development of CAL material in all disciplines in close collaboration with the content specialists, i.e. the lecturers. The HSU, along with many other units or departments, produce many CAL application paying attention to the aesthetics of interface design, but largely glossing over the learning instructions so vital to good CAL applications in harnessing the potential of multimedia in an educational environment. Too many people put a linear book on-line, give it some bookmarks, and call it hypertext; worse yet, they add a few scanned-in photographs and a soundtrack and call it multimedia (Fisher, 1994).DOI:10.1080/0968776950030116

En las últimas décadas, las bajas tasas de mujeres que cursan estudios universitarios, así como el hecho de que esas tasas se han ido incrementando, han sido analizadas por investigadores en España así como en Europa y otros países. En nuestro análisis, hemos observado que las tasas femeninas de estudiantes están creciendo año tras año pero con significativas diferencias entre disciplinas académicas. Por esta razón, nuestro propósito ha sido recoger datos de las universidades españolas, de cara a observar tendencias y sus orígenes. Nuestro estudio incluye porcentajes de mujeres enroladas en las diversas áreas académicas de estudios en las universidades españolas, comparadas con los porcentajes en el conjunto de la Academia. También incluye algunos datos sobre los porcentajes de mujeres entre los estudiantes de doctorado, así como entre el personal docente de los<br />departamentos en las facultades, y los comparamos según el estatus académico. Finalmente, presentamos algunas conclusiones sobre las barreras en la carrera académica para las profesoras en las universidades españolas entre 1978 y 2008. Estos datos revelan los crecientes porcentajes de mujeres que durante los pasados años han<br />seguido estudios superiores. También muestran algunas diferencias entre áreas académicas, y asimismo que existe una significativa tendencia de género en el acceso de<br />las estudiantes graduadas a las categorías superiores del personal docente.<br /><br />In the last decades, the low rates of women that follow studies at the university level, as well as the fact that those rates are increasing, have been analyzed by researchers in<br />Spain, as well as in Europe and in some other countries. In our analysis, we have seen that female students’ rates are increasing year after year but with significant differences<br />between academic disciplines. For this reason, our purpose was to compile data from Spanish universities, in order to see the tendencies and their origins. Our study includes<br />percentages of women enrolled in the diverse academic areas of studies at the Spanish universities, compared to the percentages in the whole Academia. It also includes some data on the percentages of women among PhD students, as well as among the teaching staff of the departments in the faculties, and we compare them by academic status. Finally, we present some conclusions on the barriers in the academic career for female professors in the Spanish universities between 1978-2008. These data reveal the increasing percentages of women that for the past last years have followed higher studies. They also show some differences among academic areas, and also that there is a significant gender bias in the access of graduated female students to the upper categories of teaching staff.<br /><br />

The study investigated planning the integration of technologies in higher institutions as a strategy for effective implementation of blended learning in universities in Rivers State. The design used was descriptive. The population of this study consisted of the 4,377 teaching staff in the three (3) public universities in Rivers State, comprising 2,348 male and 2,029 female teaching staff.  The universities are the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State University and Ignatius Ajuru University of Education. The sample of this study was 590 elements, comprising 327 male and 263 female teaching staff that were drawn from the population using stratified random sampling technique. Instrument of data collection was a questionnaire that yielded a reliability index of 0.84, using test-retest and Pearson Product Moment Correlation techniques. The data generated were analysed using mean to answer research questions. z-test was used to test hypotheses at 0.05 significance level. Findings showed that aligning university's visions with the aspirations of full integration of blended learning into university system, provision of required communication networking infrastructures and modifying curriculum designs to become deliverable through blended learning mode are key ways of integrating blended learning in the university system. Recommendations made included that university managers should consider seriously, the advantages of blended learning in the school system, with a view to using planning to foster the integration of the learning innovation into the traditional face-to-face teaching and learning approach for improving students learning experiences and achievements.
