Background: Barriers to performing activities of daily living are common complaints of patients with cancer. One of the factors causing these barriers is pain. A modified pro-self pain control is a method used to enhance the patients’ ability to cope with pain to increase their activity.Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the modified pro-self pain control to increase activity in patients with colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy.Methods: The present study employed an experimental design. Patients with colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy were randomly assigned to the intervention group (n=24) and the control group (n=24). The patients in the control group were given a standard hospital intervention, while the patients in the intervention group were given the modified pro-self pain control for nine days. The data were collected using the instrument of KATZ index and analyzed using the independent t-test.Results: The result of this study showed that there was a higher increase of activity among the patients in the intervention group than in the control group. Independent t-test showed that there was a significant difference between the intervention group and the control group (p=0.00).Conclusion: The modified pro-self pain control was found more effective to increase the activity in patients with colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy than that of the standard hospital intervention.

Abstract Context Pain is one of the most common and intolerable symptoms in cancer patients. But cancer pain control is still negative in China. Objectives This paper explores the application of quality control circle in the treatment of cancer pain in inpatients to improve the quality of life of patients with cancer pain. Method Established a quality control circle group to analyze the current status of cancer pain control in inpatients with moderate cancer pain, set goals, formulate corresponding countermeasures and implement and review them in stages. The plan-do-check-act method was cyclically applied. The Brief Pain Inventory was used to evaluate the cancer pain status of patients with cancer pain hospitalized before (January to April 2016) and after (September to December 2016) the implementation of quality control circle activities. Results The pain control effect of the observation group was significantly better than that of the control group. The mean (standard deviation) of pain severity and pain interference in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group (6.21 [2.86] vs 4.31 [2.25], 10.54 [4.10] vs 7.25 [3.77]). There was significant difference after the implementation of quality control circle (P < 0.01). Conclusion Quality control circle activities are used to manage patients with cancer pain, to improve the situation of pain control and to improve the quality of life of patients. This management tool and method is worthy of clinical promotion and application.

The current study aimed to investigate the effects of group reminiscence therapy on cognitive function, depression, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and activities of daily living in patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer disease (AD). A single-blind randomized parallel-design controlled trial was conducted between May 1, 2017, and April 30, 2018. Ninety patients with mild-to-moderate AD recruited from Beijing Geriatric Hospital were randomly allocated into intervention (n = 45) and control groups (n = 45). In the intervention group, group-based reminiscence therapy was performed in two 30- to 45-minute sessions weekly for 12 weeks. Control participants received only conventional drug treatments and routine daily care. Alzheimer disease–related symptoms were evaluated using the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive section, the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD), the Neuropsychiatric Inventory, and the Barthel Index. Four time points were set for data collection: baseline (before treatment), 4 weeks (during treatment), 12 weeks (end of treatment), and 24 weeks (12 weeks posttreatment). χ2 Tests, independent t tests, repeated-measures analysis of variance, and Bonferroni tests were used for data analysis. Significant improvements in depressive and neuropsychiatric symptoms were found in the intervention group compared to the control group ( P < .05). Mean CSDD scores in the intervention group were improved at all 3 time points compared to baseline and showed the greatest effect at 12 weeks ( t = 2.076, P = .041) and 24 weeks follow-up ( t = 3.834, P = .000) compared to controls. Group reminiscence therapy was effective for improving depressive symptoms and was beneficial for treating neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with AD.

Abstract Background Deep neuromuscular blockade may be beneficial on surgical space conditions during laparoscopic surgery. The effects of moderate neuromuscular blockade combined with transverse abdominal plane block (TAPB) on the surgical space conditions during laparoscopic surgery has not been described. We investigated if moderate neuromuscular blockade combined with TAPB would be associated with similar surgical space conditions compared with deep neuromuscular blockade. Methods Eighty patients undergoing elective laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer were randomly divided into two groups. The intervention group was treated with moderate neuromuscular blockade (train-of-four (TOF) count between 1 and 3) combined with TAPB (M group), while the control group was treated with deep neuromuscular blockade (D group), with a TOF count of 0 and a post-tetanic count (PTC) ≥ 1. Both groups received the same anesthesia management. The distance between the sacral promontory and the umbilical skin during the operation was compared between the two groups. The surgeon scored the surgical space conditions according to a five-point ordinal scale. Patients’ pain scores were evaluated eight hours after the operation. Results The 95% confidence intervals of the difference in the distance from the sacral promontory to the umbilical skin between the groups were − 1.45–0.77cm. According to the preset non-inferior standard of 1.5cm, (-1.45, ∞) completely fell within (-1.50, ∞), and the non-inferior effect test was qualified. There was no significant difference in the surgical rating score between the two groups. The dosage of rocuronium in group D was significantly higher than that in group M (P < 0.01). The M group had significantly lower pain scores than the D group eight hours after the operation (P < 0.05). Conclusions In laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery, moderate neuromuscular blockade combined with TAPB can provide surgical space conditions similar to those of deep neuromuscular blockade, and at the same time, reduces the use of muscle relaxants, relieves postoperative pain within 4 hours after operation, shorten the time to extubation and stay in PACU. BACKGROUND Background: Lack of knowledge and poor attitude is one of the barriers to colorectal cancer screening participation. Printed material such as pamphlets and posters were the main approach in health education on disease prevention. Current information technology advancement had seen an increasing trend of the public to read from websites and mobile app using their smartphone. Thus, health information dissemination should also be diverted to the current trend of information search. Increase in knowledge and awareness will hopefully increase the screening participation and prevent late detection of diseases such as colorectal cancer. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of ColorApp mobile applications in improving the knowledge and attitude on colorectal cancer among user aged 50 years old and above who are the population at risk for the disease in Kedah. METHODS Methods: A quasi-experimental study has been conducted involving 100 participants in Kedah, Malaysia. Participants from five randomly selected community empowerment program in Kota Setar district was chosen as the intervention group while Kuala Muda district was chosen as the control group. Participants were given a self-administered validated questionnaire on knowledge and attitude towards colorectal cancer. A usable mobile application, the ColorApp (Colorectal Cancer Application) was developed as a new educational tool on colorectal cancer prevention. The intervention group were given 2 weeks to use the ColorApp. The same questionnaire was redistributed to both groups after two weeks. The mean percentage score for knowledge and attitude between groups were compared using Repeated Measure ANCOVA. RESULTS Result: There was no significant difference of age, sex, highest education level, current occupation, and diabetic status between the two groups. The number of smokers was significantly higher in intervention groups as compared to control group and it has been controlled during analysis. There was a significant difference in mean knowledge score between intervention and control group with regards to time [Huynh Feldt: F (1,95) = 19.81; p < 0.001]. However, there was no significant difference in mean attitude score between intervention and control group with regards to time [F (1,95) = 0.36, p = 0.550]. CONCLUSIONS Conclusion: The mobile application can be one of the adjunct approaches in educating the public on colorectal cancer.

Abstract Family caregivers who provide care to persons with dementia (PWD) in a home setting may feel greater stress, depressive symptoms, or struggle to deal with issues in their lives. Indeed, PWD often require 24-hour care that includes ensuring safety, providing emotional support, and assistance with activities of daily living and multiple instrumental activities of daily living. This study examined the short-term effects of an online music intervention on stress, coping, and depression among caregivers of PWD. We included 35 caregivers (n=24 [intervention group], n=11 [comparison group]) living at home with their family member with dementia. Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon signed-ranked test were performed to examine between- and within-group differences from baseline to eight weeks after the intervention. The coping subscale yielded a significant difference between the groups at post-test (U=76.50, Z= -1.978, p=0.048), indicating the intervention group had better coping than the comparison group at post-test. Significant within-group differences in overall stress (Z= -2.200, p= 0.028) and coping subscale (Z= -1.997, p=0.046) in the comparison group at post-test suggest that overall stress and coping were maintained from baseline to post-test in the intervention group, whereas the comparison group had significantly higher overall stress and lower coping at post-test. This home-based online music program showed potential benefits for caregivers of PWD by taking into account participants’ musical preferences and ease of access to the program. A randomized controlled trial with a larger sample size and objective measurements of stress and depressive symptoms (e.g., biomarkers) should be conducted in the future.

Background/Aims: We investigated the efficacy of a combined exercise and cognitive training system that we devised for improvement of attention and concentration, cognition, and activities of daily living in older adults with dementia. Methods: A total of 100 dementia patients were randomly assigned to an intervention group or a control group. The intervention group was subjected to a combined exercise and cognitive training for 6 consecutive weeks. Evaluations were performed using the Trail Making Test-Part A, the Mini-Mental State Examination, and an N-type activities of daily living evaluation scale for the elderly. Results: A comparison of the changes in scores on the evaluation scales between the intervention group and the control group showed significant interactions for all scores. Conclusions: The combined system is effective in increasing attention and concentration and improving cognitive function and activities of daily living in dementia patients.

Abstract Introduction Tonsillectomy is one of the most common pediatric surgeries in the world and pain control following tonsillectomy is very important. Objective The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of acupressure on the amount of pain following tonsillectomy in children. Method One hundred and forty-four children aged 5–12 years old were assigned into one of three groups: interventions, control and placebo. In the intervention group, acupressure was applied at three acupoints and in the placebo group, sham acupressure was applied. In the control group routine care only was applied. Results There was a significant difference between an average of changes in pain score before and after the intervention during the 3 time periods after the tonsillectomy operation in the acupressure group (p = 0.002). Conclusion The results showed that acupressure had a positive effect on pain reduction after tonsillectomy in children in the intervention group.

Background: In all types of dementia, cognitive abilities are affected, behaviour is altered and functional capacity is progressively lost. This cognitive deterioration manifests in the decrease of abilities required to perform the activities of daily living (ADL). The objective of this pilot study was to assess the effect of an Occupational Therapy programme based on the training of ADL through cognitive stimulation on the independence of ADL of persons with dementia. Methods: Institutionalized older adults with major neurocognitive disorder or dementia (N = 58) were randomly allocated to receive either the Occupational Therapy ADL cognitive stimulation programme or conventional Occupational Therapy. The cognitive level and the independence level performing ADL were measured at baseline (week 0), after 5 weeks of treatment (week 5) and after 6 weeks of follow up (week 12). A value of p < 0.05 and α = 0.0025 (Bonferroni correction) was considered as statistically significant. Results: The results obtained showed improvements in the level of independence performing ADLs in the intervention group compared to the control group (p = 0.006). The improvements were seen in relation to feeding (p = 0.001), dressing (p = 0.005) and bladder and bowel incontinence (p = 0.003), the changes observed in feeding are statistically significant. However, those improvements were not maintained after the follow up period. There were no significant changes in relation to the cognitive level (p = 0.741). Conclusions: Occupational Therapy based on ADL cognitive stimulation can have a positive effect, increasing the independence of subjects with major neurocognitive disorder or dementia who are institutionalised.

Stroke is a disease caused by the interruption of blood supply to the brain. WHO (World Health Organization) stated 15 million people world wide suffer a stroke each year. As many as 5 million people are death sand 5 million people have permanent disability. Stroke Foundation of Indonesia (Yastroki) noted that Indonesia ranks  first in Asia with the majority of stroke patients and become leading causes of death in Indonesia. Stroke affects extremity dysfunction such decreased muscle strength which will contribute to the decline ability of Activities of daily living (ADL). There are several the rapies that have been done to over come muscle weakness and limitations of the ADL such as range of movement exercises, positioning, and acupressure is one form of therapy that can be done to restore extremity function. This study aims to determine the effect of acupressure intervention on limb muscle strength and Activities Of Daily Living (ADL) In Stroke Patients. Quantitative Study of quasi-experiment pre-post test design involved 113 respondents into two groups: the intervention group with 88 respondents and the control group with 25 respondents.The result showed male respondents (51.3%), aged 45-59 years (58.4%), and the first attack (85%). After the intervention of 7 day sine ach ofthe respondents, found significant differences increase muscle strength and ADL before the after intervention:  right limbmuscle strength(p =0.000); left limbstrength (p =0.000); and ADL (p =0.000). Respondent characteristics that influence muscle strength and ADL were age and frequency of stroke (P <0.05), where as no influence of gender (p> 0.05). The conclusions of this study that acupressureis an effective therapy on increase muscle strength and ADL of stroke patients. This research recommended acupressure as a complementary therapy to improve muscle strength andADLof stroke patients.
