Although CLT (Communicative Language Teaching) was introduced into Japanese English education in the mid-1980s under the initiative of the Monbukagakusho (the National Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture of Japan), the implementation of CLT has been challenging for Japanese English teachers. This article explores possible sources for the difficulties that CLT has caused in Japan. It examines factors such as Japanese sociocultural, political, and educational contexts that have significant influence on curricular innovation. This article further argues that the underlying assumptions of CLT that are based on the native-speaker competence model are not compatible with the contexts of Japanese English education because these assumptions include native-speaker competence as a primary goal of second language acquisition. Recognizing the current status of English as an international language, the authors propose an alternative model based on the notion of intercultural communicative competence (Alptekin, 2002) and discuss how the model of intercultural communicative competence can be applied to Japanese English education.

A focus group which consisted of 5 Medical Education postgraduates and 3 oral health educators’ training team members were invited to formulate a preliminary list of basic competencies. Delphi technique was also adopted through inviting 12 experts in oral health education to evaluate and formulate a final list of elementary schools’ oral health educators’ competencies during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results A competency framework was developed. Fifty-five competencies were identified including 35 in cognitive domain, 12 skills and 8 attitude competencies. A list of essential competencies has been identified. These competencies should be addressed in training programs targeting oral health educators, which can consequently produce competent educators who can successfully promote and provide health care to all schoolchildren during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This research mainly aims at conducting an extensive evaluation of the two English textbooks for senior high school grade tenth revised edition based on Kurikulum 2013 yang disempurnakan (curriculum 2013 revised edition). This study employed a descriptive qualitative study. The English textbooks for the tenth grade published by Erlangga and Ministry of Education and Culture were selected as the sources of data. The evaluation focuses on how far the textbooks provide learning to promote cognitive skill. Basic competencies in cognitive domain of curriculum 2013 were adapted as an instrument to evaluate the textbooks. Findings found that the textbooks’ authors of the two textbooks have tried to present opportunities for students to achieve core competencies in cognitive domain of curriculum 2013 in several units. Nevertheless, there are certain units that need additional instructions to provide more opportunities for students in acquiring low and high-order thinking skills. On the basis of the findings, the textbooks may revise or improve the textbooks’ content by adding more experiences for students to achieve the levels of taxonomy bloom expected in the core and basic competencies of curriculum 2013. The use of robotics systems in education also known as "Educational robotics", "Robotics in education" is gaining popularity as a trend. This is evidenced by the increase in the number of publications on this topic in scientific journals and conducting an experiment at the national level on "Methodological system of teaching the basics of technology and robotics as part of STEM-education" by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The rapid development of the robotics industry necessitates training of appropriately qualified specialists. However, school remains a traditional place to master basic competencies needed to determine the professional orientation of a person, and familiarity with robotics increases the chances of students choosing this area of activity in the future. Teachers mainly choose the most common technical tools for teaching robotics, which has both advantages and disadvantages. It is important to develop a classification of educational technical solutions that already exist and are used in the process of teaching the basics of robotics at school. The paper analyzes sets of components used in teaching the basics of robotics for school-aged children, explores 84 different technical solutions that can be used in the process of learning robotics, and identifies common and distinctive features. As a result of the research a classification of robotic platforms and ready-made technical solutions was offered for use by teachers in the process of teaching students the basics of robotics. In the perspective of further research, it is planned to develop methodological recommendations for the selection of content and means of teaching the basics of robotics to secondary school pupils.
