In the context of global performativity, the refugee story is a command performance to bureaucrats that travels across boundaries to other cultural events, including participatory research. The embodied dynamics of co-constituting performance trouble the narrative interview as a site of storytelling. I examine three moments in which the phrase “if you ask” marks the politics of inviting and empathizing with personal narrative.

ObjectivesLittle research has looked at how people who do not use mental health services experience psychosis. Thus, the present study aimed to explore the experiences and views of people with psychosis who have neither sought nor received support from mental health services for at least 5 years.DesignA narrative interview study. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data.SettingEngland.ParticipantsTwenty-eight participants with self-defined psychotic experiences were asked to provide a free narrative about their experiences.ResultsFive themes were identified: (1) Perceiving psychosis as positive; (2) Making sense of psychotic experiences as a more active psychological process to find explanations and meaning; (3) Finding sources of strength, mainly in relationships and the environment, but outside of services; (4) Negative past experiences of mental health services, leading to disengagement and (5) Positive past experiences with individual clinicians, as an appreciation of individuals despite negative views of services as a whole.ConclusionsPerceiving psychosis as something positive, a process of making sense of psychotic experiences and the ability to find external sources of strength all underpin—in addition to negative experiences with services—a choice to live with psychosis outside of services. Future research may explore to what extent these perceptions, psychological processes and abilities can be facilitated and strengthened, in order to support those people with psychosis who do not seek treatment and possibly also some of those who are in treatment.

The article deals with the life situation of the families of prisoners, in particular, parental relationships connected with the experience of incarceration in a correctional institution. During the realisation of the research I noticed many difficulties in finding contact with potential interlocutors, therefore I considered the families of prisoners as an environment “invisible in the research field”. In addition, I defined families of prisoners as marginalised and stigmatised environments. The main aim of the article is to show selected methodological dilemmas that can be encountered through the design and analysis of biographical research of family members of prisoners. The theoretical introduction of the paper as an extended definition of the penitentiary crisis allowed to characterise the dominant trends and directions of research on prisoners’ families. Further, it focused on selected problems of realisation of qualitative research (especially biographical research). I analyse the literature and present my own methodological approach based on the direction of interpretative sociology. Using the potential of the autobiographical narrative interview technique (of the German sociological school of Fritz Schütze), I collected 31 interviews with adult children of prisoners and 30 interviews with parents of prisoners. Finally, I refer to my own research experience and discuss the “usefulness and ineffectiveness” of an autobiographical narrative interview. Moreover, I characterise key reflections on the role of the researcher in obtaining autobiographical narrations. The article is an invitation to discuss the improvement of research procedures, especially in the area of research on family members of persons in prisons.

The article presents the life story of an elderly woman, the sense of the quality of her life, the critical events that shaped her life, and the lessons learned from her experiences. The study adopted a biographical paradigm, which explains the importance of individual biographies in the education process and indicates the need to study the history of life as a source of knowledge about man and his learning. The main aim of the undertaken research was to recognise the meanings that the respondent gives to critical events in shaping the quality of her life. The biographical method was used, and, within it, an autobiographical narrative interview. The most significant events assessed as positive were the births of her children. The negative events were in particular: the deaths of close ones, a failed marriage and an accident. In coping with suffering, the woman was helped by: help from others, faith, strength, optimism, activity, activities for the benefit of others, and her value system. Lessons emerged from the subject’s history, helpful in her life, which can also inspire others. The narrator tried to live in harmony with her conscience and the accepted principles, which gave her satisfaction. Biographical research has an educational function. Life stories can teach what is important in life, what is worth living for, and they can lead to reflections.

Background: Patients’ illness stories are valuable information that supports person-centred care across the illness trajectory. Aims: To learn how older South Asian immigrant women experience living with heart illness long after discharge from hospital. Method: We used narrative inquiry, a personal experience method that explores and interprets lived and told stories through the three dimensions of experience. Design: Four participants, over the age of sixty, living with heart illness for over ten years, were invited to engage in narrative interview and Narrative Reflective Process. Outcomes: Giving patients voice, allows caregivers insight into the human experience of illness beyond hospitalization. Considering the increased migration of people around the globe, this knowledge is significant in provision of person-centred care. Implications: Person-centred care does not end with the hospitalization and outpatient clinics. Inter-disciplinary teams need to reconsider the trajectory of chronic illnesses and the care required throughout, especially for marginalized populations.

Resumo: O presente artigo, de cunho teórico, apresenta uma proposta metodológica para as pesquisas qualitativas em Psicologia Clínica. Para tanto, discute a perspectiva fenomenológica hermenêutica e suas ressonâncias para a pesquisa qualitativa. Posteriormente, reflete sobre a importância da questão-bússola como norteadora da pesquisa e apresenta a entrevista narrativa e o diário de bordo como recursos metodológicos. Por fim, a análise compreensiva do fenômeno, a partir da compreensão gadameriana, será apontada enquanto possibilidade de compreensão/interpretação do fenômeno a ser pesquisado. Nessa direção, considera-se a relevância dos pressupostos fenomenológicos hermenêuticos – tais como a compreensão, a linguagem, a noção de verdade, fenômeno e método – na tarefa de contribuir para a realização de pesquisas em Psicologia Clínica, ao passo que são assumidos como indicativos-formais; os quais se configuram como sinalizadores de direções e auxiliam na compreensão dos fenômenos.Palavras-chave: Pesquisa Qualitativa; Psicologia Clínica; Fenomenologia Hermenêutica; Gadamer. Qualitative research in clinical psychology: a methodological possibility in dialogue with hermeneutic phenomenologyAbstract: This article presents a methodological proposal for qualitative research in Clinical Psychology. For that, we will discuss the hermeneutic phenomenological perspective and its resonances for qualitative research. Later, we will reflect on the importance of the compass question as guiding the research and we will present the narrative interview and the logbook as methodological resources. Finally, the comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon, based on the understanding of Gadamer, will be pointed out as a possibility of understanding / interpretation of the phenomenon to be researched. In this direction, the relevance of hermeneutic phenomenological presuppositions - such as comprehension, language, the notion of truth, phenomenon and method - in the task of contributing to research in Clinical Psychology is considered, while they are assumed as indicative -form; which are configured as direction flags and help in understanding the phenomena.Keywords: Qualitative research; Clinical psychology; Hermeneutic Phenomenology; Gadamer.

Este trabalho é proveniente de um estudo desenvolvido na Comunidade Indígena Itxala, município de Santa Terezinha, Estado de Mato Grosso, acerca das práticas socioculturais empreendidas pelos indígenas Iny-Karajá em distintas atividades cotidianas que contemplam as paisagens de manifestações culturais e originárias do povo das águas. Como ponto de partida, trazemos a seguinte indagação: Em que termos é possível etnografar os saberes originários do povo Iny-Karajá na perspectiva de mobilizar e potencializar ações educativas para a sala de aula? Nesse sentido, objetivamos descrever as práticas socioculturais que podem mobilizar e potencializar atividades para o ensino de Ciências e Matemática. O estudo pauta-se na abordagem qualitativa de cunho etnográfico, permitindo evidenciar as impressões e as percepções dos professores, por meio da entrevista narrativa e da participação para observar o cotidiano desses indígenas no decurso da realização de suas práticas socioculturais, com destaque para as pinturas corporais e as ações educativas. Nossas reflexões evidenciam, dentre outras possibilidades, o compartilhar de novos conhecimentos e de atividades escolares na e para a sala de aula mediadas por elementos socioculturais do contexto comunitário, emergindo a negociação de significados como estratégia mediadora e potencializadora do aprendizado de Ciências e Matemática no contexto escolar local.Palavras-chave: Práticas socioculturais. Ensino de Ciências e Matemática. Abstract: This work comes from a study developed in the Itxala Indigenous Community, located in the municipality of Santa Terezinha, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil. It is focused on addressing socio-cultural practices of the Iny-Karajá indigenous people during their different daily activities, which include cultural and original manifestations of the people of the waters. As a starting point, we bring the following question: How is it possible to know, through ethnography, the knowledge originating from the Iny-Karajá people in the perspective of mobilizing and enhancing educational actions for the classroom? So, we aim to describe the socio-cultural practices that can mobilize and enhance activities for the teaching of Science and Mathematics. This study is based on a qualitative ethnographic approach, allowing to evidence the impressions and perceptions of teachers through narrative interview and participation, with the intention of observing the daily lives of these indigenous people during the performance of their socio-cultural practices, with emphasis on body paintings and educational actions. Among other possibilities, our reflections show the sharing of new knowledge and school activities in and for the classroom, mediated by sociocultural elements of the community context, making the negotiation of meanings emerge as a mediating and enhancing strategy for the learning of Sciences and Mathematics in the local school context.Keywords: Sociocultural practices. A qualitative narrative study was designed to examine the impact on students’ learning when an Elder came to speak to students in a Technology, Society and the Future course in the Price Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba. This study accounts for one student’s story as heard through an open-ended narrative interview facilitated by a team of researchers, and restoried into a problem-solution narrative structure. The preliminary findings highlight the impact of the Elder’s teachings on the student, the importance of Indigenous People’s Knowledges and perspectives in engineering education, and the importance of making space for students to reflect on these learnings.
