Reliable experimental data on compressive strength of composite material are important, especially for designing structures having dominant compressive stresses, such as bolted joints. Composite materials usually have lower compressive strengths compared to tensile strengths. Woven composites added more complications. Initial waviness in woven composites makes the compressive strengths even much lower. Therefore, in this paper, experimental study on the compressive strengths of woven composites will be presented. The experiments used standard ASTM D3410M-03. Woven glass-epoxy will be tested extensively. The specimens were produced using standard hand layup techniques. Several layup configurations were tested, namely (0/90)s, (0/90/±45)s and (±45)s. The results showed that woven glass-epoxy generated failure modes specifically found in compressive tests of composites, such as: fiber micro-buckling, fiber crushing and shear band-formation. It was also found that unlike in the case of tensile tests, the layup configurations did not affect the compressive strength values. It seems that the fiber orientation will not affect significantly the compressive strengths. The epoxy matrix played more dominant role on the compressive behavior of woven glass-epoxy composites.

T800/high-temperature epoxy resin composites with different hole shapes were subjected to hygrothermal ageing and thermal-oxidative ageing, and the effects of these different ageing methods on the open-hole properties of the composites were investigated, including analyses of the mass changes, surface topography changes (before and after ageing), fracture morphologies, open-hole compressive performance, dynamic mechanical properties and infrared spectrum. The results showed that only physical ageing occurred under hygrothermal ageing (70°C and 85% relative humidity), and the equilibrium moisture absorption rate was only approximately 0.72%. In contrast, under thermal-oxidative ageing at 190°C, both physical ageing and chemical ageing occurred. After ageing, the open-hole compressive strength of the composite laminates with different hole shapes decreased significantly, but the open-hole compressive strength after thermal-oxidative ageing was greater than that after hygrothermal ageing. Among the aged and unaged laminates, the laminates with round holes exhibited the largest open-hole compressive strength, followed by those with the elliptical holes, square holes and diamond holes. The failure modes of the laminates were all through-hole failures. The unaged samples had a glass transition temperature ( T g) of 226°C, whereas the T g of the samples after hygrothermal ageing was 208°C, which is 18°C less than that of the unaged samples, and the T g of the samples after thermal-oxidative ageing was 253°C, which is 27°C greater than that of the unaged samples.

Experimental research on axially compressed columns made from reinforced concrete (RC) and RC columns strengthened with a steel jacket and additional fill concrete is presented in this paper. A premade squared cross-section RC column was placed inside a steel tube, and then the space between the column and the tube was filled with additional concrete. A total of fourteen stub axially compressed columns, including nine strengthened specimens and five plain reinforced concrete specimens, were experimentally tested. The main parameter that was varied in the experiment was the compressive strength of the filler concrete. Three different concrete compression strength classes were used. Test results showed that all three cross-section parts (the core column, the fill, and the steel jacket) worked together in the force-carrying process through all load levels, even if only the basic RC column was loaded. The strengthened columns exhibited pronounced ductile behavior compared to the plain RC columns. The influence of the test parameters on the axial compressive strength was investigated. In addition, the specimen failure modes, strain development, and load vs. deformation relations were registered. The applicability of three different design codes to predict the axial bearing capacity of the strengthened columns was also investigated.

In this paper, numerical simulations of reinforced mortar beams subjected to projectile impact are conducted by using the proposed 3-D Rigid-Body-Spring Model (RBSM) in order to investigate mechanisms of crack propagation and scabbing mode of concrete members under high-velocity impact. The RBSM is one of the discrete-type numerical methods, which represents a continuum material as an assemblage of rigid particle interconnected by springs. The RBSM have advantages in modeling localized and oriented phenomena, such as cracking, its propagation, frictional slip and so on, in concrete structures. The authors have already developed constitutive models for the 3D RBSM with random geometry generated Voronoi diagram in order to quantitatively evaluate the mechanical responses of concrete including softening and localization fractures, and have shown that the model can simulate cracking and various failure modes of reinforced concrete structures. In the target tests, projectile velocity is set 200m/s. The reinforced mortar beams with or without the shear reinforcing steel plates were used to investigate the effects of shear reinforcement on the crack propagation and the local failure modes. By comparing the numerical results with the test results, it is confirmed that the proposed model can reproduce well the crack propagation and the local failure behaviors. In addition, effects of the reinforcing plates on the stress wave and the crack propagation behaviors are discussed from the observation of the numerical simulation results. As a result, it was found that scabbing of reinforced mortar beams subjected to high velocity impact which is in the range of the tests is caused by mainly shear deformation of a beam.

The pull-out performance of conventional upright suction caissons has been investigated by different researchers. However, no attention has been formerly paid to tapered suction caissons. Some numerical studies already conducted by the authors demonstrated that tapered caissons exhibit pull-out capacities well above than that from their corresponding upright caissons. This paper deals with different failure mechanisms of tapered suction caissons and discusses some reason for their superior performance. A numerical approach has been used and different combinations of caisson types/ soil categories have been examined. With tapered suction caissons two different modes of failure have been discerned. The first mode has been noticed to develop in weak clays and sands under drained conditions. This mode corresponds to a shear sliding failure in the soil plug along the caisson’s interior wall. Concurrently a soil wedge is formed in the soil body adjacent to the caisson. The second mode of failure has been observed in higher strength drained clays and undrained clays and sands. With this failure mode a local failure at the bottom of the soil plug has been noticed to happen. At the same time the failure is extended to the lower surfaces of a soil wedge outside of the caisson. The detached soil plug accompanies the caisson in its movement upward following the local failure.

As the important lessons learned from the Fukushima-nuclear power plant accident, mitigation of failure consequences and prevention of catastrophic failure became essential against severe accident and excessive earthquake conditions. To improve mitigation measures and accident management, clarification of failure behaviors with locations is premise under design extension conditions such as severe accidents and earthquakes. Design extension conditions induce some different failure modes from design conditions. Furthermore, best estimation for these failure modes are required for preparing countermeasures and management. Therefore, this study focused on identification of failure modes under design extension conditions. To observe ultimate failure behaviors of structures under extreme loadings, new experimental techniques were adopted with simulation materials such as lead and lead-antimony alloy, which has very small yield stress. Postulated failure modes of main components under design extension conditions were investigated according three categories of loading modes. The first loading mode is high temperature and internal pressure. Under this mode, ductile fracture and local failure were investigated. At the structural discontinuities, local failure may become dominant. The second is high temperature and external pressure loading mode. Buckling and fracture were investigated. Buckling occurs however hardly break without additional loads or constraints. The last loading is excessive earthquake. Ratchet deformation, collapse, and fatigue were investigated. Among them, low-cycle fatigue is dominant.

In this research, the physical, mechanical and morphological properties of oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) mat/woven kenaf fabric-reinforced epoxy composites have been investigated. The oil palm EFB/woven kenaf fabrics were varied, with weight ratios of 50/0 (T1), 35/15 (T2), 25/25 (T3), 15/35 (T4) and 0/50 (T5). The composites were fabricated using a simple hand lay-up technique followed by hot pressing. The result obtained shows that an increase in kenaf fiber content exhibited higher tensile and flexural properties. On the other hand, the opposite trend was observed in the impact strength of hybrid composites, where an increase in kenaf fiber content reduced the impact strength. This can be corroborated with the physical properties analysis, where a higher void content, water absorption and thickness swelling were observed for pure oil palm EFB (T1) composites compared to other samples. The scanning electron microscopy analysis results clearly show the different failure modes of the tensile fractured samples. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and shows significant differences between the obtained results.

In this paper, the effect of carbon fiber hybridization on the compressive strength of glass-carbon/epoxy hybrid filament wound pipes before and after low velocity impact was investigated experimentally. Specifically, the effects of different stacking sequence and fiber content ratio on the compression and compression after impact (CAI) behavior of hybrid glass-carbon fiber reinforced polymer pipes were analyzed. Hybrid composite pipes composed of eight layers of / reinforced with thin HDPE liner were manufactured utilizing filament winding technique. A series of axial compressive tests were carried out on the composite pipes for the non-impacted and impacted specimens under 100 J of impact energy. Residual compressive strength, damage tolerance and failure modes were examined and analyzed for different pipe configurations, before and after the impact. The failure modes of non-impacted and impacted composite pipes under compressive loading were analyzed visually. The results show that, under the same conditions of impact energy, specimens with alternative fibers exhibited better impact resistance regardless of fiber content ratio. Moreover, carbon fiber reinforced epoxy specimens exhibited the worst impact damage tolerance for a given impact energy level although having the highest compressive strength before impact among the samples, with the highest percentage reduction of 62% in residual compressive force after impact.

In this article the finite element software was used to analyse the values for compressive strength of X-cor sandwich. During the analysis, the failure criteria and materials stiffness degradation rules of failure mechanisms were proposed. The failure processes and failure modes were also clarified. In the finite element model we used the distributions of failure elements to simulate the failure processes. Meanwhile the failure mechanisms of X-cor sandwich were explained. The finite element analysis indicates that the resin regions of Z-pin tips fail firstly and the Z-pins fail secondly. The dominant failure mode is the Z-pin elastic buckling and the propagation paths of failure elements are dispersive. Through contrast the finite element values and test results are consistent well and the error range is -7.6%~9.5%. Therefore the failure criteria and stiffness degradation rules are reasonable and the model can be used to predict the compressive strength of X-cor sandwich.
