Exploring Lean Production System Adoption in the Moroccan Manufacturing and Non-Manufacturing Industries: Awareness, Benefits and Barriers

Although lean manufacturing emerged in the 1990s, and since then, it has become known and recognised worldwide, companies still struggle to implement it successfully, especially in less developed countries. The purpose of this paper is to assess the level of maturity of lean production within small and medium-sized companies, identify what the benefits of lean implementation are, and present an exploration and analysis of the barriers that influence the implementation of lean production in these companies.To achieve this objective, items from previous studies were extracted through a systematic literature review and then validated by interviews with Moroccan experts in the manufacturing and non-manufacturing industry; on the other hand, a questionnaire survey was conducted with 78 small and medium enterprises in Morocco. Subsequently, all collected responses were statistically analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS V21.0). The results show that the lean approach is unfortunately not yet adopted and applied by all Moroccan SMEs (24% of our respondents have not yet tried to apply lean). In addition, the most significant benefits announced by Moroccan small and medium enterprises are ‘the elimination of waste (82.1%)’, ‘the reduction of costs (78.2%)’, and ‘the improvement of efficiency and performance of production units (70.5%)’. Finally, the principal component analysis indicated that the two main difficulties that need to be maintained are poor management (with 63.6 % of the total variance) and lack of financial resources, monitoring, and skilled labours (with 7.7 % of the total variance).

Many companies in developed countries are implementing lean manufacturing and offering significant results. However, experts argue that the concept can not only be used in large companies but also in SMEs. Some SMEs in the world have also implemented the lean concept, but there have been many failures during implementation. This is because of the lean implementation framework. Several researchers have developed specific frameworks for lean implementation in SMEs. Therefore the final objective of this study is a lean implementation framework that is suitable for SMEs in Indonesia. In this research, the first step of the literature study is to search for previous studies on google scholar, emerald, elsevier, etc. related to the lean framework. Furthermore, comparing and comparing the framework in previous research. This comparison can be a lean implementation in Indonesia, with the strengths and weaknesses of each of these frameworks

This research aims to identify current condition and rules of lean manufacturing (LM) implementation in Agro- Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The current condition aspects are identification of waste, LM techniques and methods, the reason and barriers on LM implementation in SMEs. Exploring the behavior of SMEs on implementing LM which supporting to generate productivity and efficiency on production system are important to be identified. Initially, LM concept are implemented in manufacturing industry especially in automotive industry. Nowadays this concept has been implemented by other sector included Small and Medium-size Enterprise. However, it has still a few number of Agro-SMEs implementing LM concept. The data from Indonesia Statistic revealed that the proportion of SME- agro based are in the total of SME in Indonesia. It insinuated that Agro-SMEs has a significant potency for national economic if their productivity increase. LM providing chance to improve productivity and efficiency in. Many research had conducted to explore LM implementation in various sector. Unfortunately, Research on LM implementation in Agro-SMEs has still a few number.  Research was conducted in 12 Agro-SMEs around Sumedang and Bandung. Selected SMEs referring to the use of horticulture and plantation commodity as a raw material. The data collected by field observation and deep interview to the owner, management-level, and employer. The data presented through description of qualitative and quantitative analysis. The result shows that the motion becomes a dominant waste in SMEs at 30%, while over production activity contributes waste at 22%, waiting aspect at 17%, inventory at 13 %, defect and transportation at 9%. Motion generates negative impact to work productivity and effectivity, for instance increase of time consume unimportant activity at work, WIP of product, cost for labor, and cost production.  In terms of Method and techniques implemented in Agro-SME, Continuous improvement (Kaizen) and 5 S outnumbered to other methods and techniques at 50%. Other method and techniques such as Teamwork and 5Why had contributed at 41.6%, TQM and Work standardization at 33.33%, and Jidoka at 16.67% as well as Kanban system, Value Stream Mapping (VSM), and SMED 0%. In terms of the reason on implementing LM, Improving the quality of product becoming a larger proportion which affecting the LM implementation at 36%. In other hand, knowledge outnumbered to others aspect. It contributes 35% as the most barrier factor on LM implementation.

The study investigated the effect recruitment and election on the performance of SMEs in Kisumu Municipality, Kenya. Kenya has 1.6 million SMEs, constituting 96% of business enterprises, employing 75% of the labour force and contributing 20% to GDP. But their performance has been poor in the last decade. Hence the need to determine the suitable recruitment and selection strategies that could increase their performance. The study found that the overall average performance of SMEs in Kisumu Municipality was 60.71%. There was a significant positive correlation between recruitment and selection, and performance of SMEs at α = .01. The average performance of SMEs with good recruitment and selection was 81.90%; with moderate was 67.94%, with poor was 53.90%. Recruitment and selection account for 40.8% of the total variance in performance of SMEs. The study concludes that recruitment and selection has a significant effect on the performance of SMEs in Kisumu Municipality.  Key WordsRecruitment, selection, performance, SMEs, Kisumu, sourcing, attracting, screening

The role of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises or Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in a country's economic growth is considered important. SMEs have a large and crucial contribution to the Indonesian economy. MSMEs have an important role in development and economic growth. The role of SME is not only felt in developing countries but also in developed countries. In developed and developing countries, MSME is very important, because it absorbs the most labor compared to large businesses. The contribution of MSMEs to the formation or growth of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is greater than the contribution of large businesses. However, in reality the amount is inversely proportional to quality. Many MSME actors whose HR quality is still low, both in education and technology. The low quality of human resources has an impact on their productivity. This study aims to find out how the Development Strategy of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises in the Manufacturing Industry Sector in Bekasi District. The use of the Location Quotient (LQ) method is used to find out what business bases can be used by MSMEs based on LQ analysis calculations. The use of TOWS analysts deepens the discussion of what and how MSME strategies compete. From the LQ analysis calculation results it appears that Bekasi Regency, the processed industry business sector, is a leading sector with an LQ index number > 1. As we know, Bekasi Regency's economic strength is indeed sourced from the industrial sector. Furthermore, the SME development strategy is based on the TOWS analysis, with the characters in each of the different MSMEs. The strategies used include: SO (Strength Opportunities), ST (Strength Threat) strategy, WO (Weakness Opportunites) strategy and WT (Weakness Threat) strategy.

Innovation plays a major role and is a crucial component of the organization’s growth. Creativity and innovation have become increasingly popular as key contributors to firm success in the last few decades or so. The incoming technology of Industrial Revolution 4.0 forced many companies to be innovative to compete in technological era. However, many SMEs are not ready and less innovative. Furthermore, there is lack of research focus on HPWS implementation amongst SMEs indicates that further research must be conducted along these lines. Therefore, this study aim to investigate the effect of high performance work system (HPWS) towards innovative work behaviour of employees in small and medium enterprises. This study used quantitative approach to identify the critical success factor of high performance work systems (HPWS) in Malaysian small and medium enterprises (SME) manufacturing industry. This study used descriptive analysis to analyze the data. Five-point Likert scales items ranging from (1-strongly disagree, 5 – strongly agree) employed for measuring the HPWS. Therefore, the total of 81 items survey questions were adapted to obtain the respondents for SME manufacturing industry. Reliability analysis shows that all the HPWS dimensions have very good reliability with Cronbach’s alpha value range from 0.884 to 0.976. According to Tang et al (2014), Cronbach’s alpha range between 0.70 and 0.80 considered as good reliability whereby 0.80 and 0.90 considered as very good reliability. Result also showed that selective staffing has the highest mean score followed by employee participation, which are 3.951 and 3.833 respectively. This proved that selective staffing is most important critical success factor in the HPWS implementation for Malaysian SME manufacturing industry. Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) represent more than 99% of enterprises in Europe. Therefore, knowledge about this sector, also in the spatial context is important to understand the patterns of economic and social development. The main goal of this article is an analysis of spatial conditions and the situation of MSMEs on a local level using combined sources of information. This includes data collected in the Social Insurance Institution and Tax registers in Poland, which provides information on the employment, wages, revenues and taxes paid by the MSMEs on a local level as well as contextual statistical information. The data is used for a diagnosis of spatial circumstances and discussion of conditions influencing the status of the MSMEs sector in a selected region (voivodeship) in Poland. Taxonomy methods including factor analysis and clustering methods based on k-means and SOM Kohonen were used for selecting significant information and grouping of the local units according to the situation of the MSMEs. There are eight factors revealed in principal component analysis and five clusters of local units distinguished using these factors. These include two clusters with a high share of rural local units and two clusters with a high share of rural-urban and urban local units. Additionally, there was an outstanding cluster with only two dominant urban local units. Factors show differences between clusters in the situation of MSMEs sector and infrastructure. Different spatial conditions in different regions influence the situation of MSMEs.

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) have been noted to play a significant role in promoting economic growth in less developed countries, developing and also in developed countries. Worldwide, the micro and small enterprises have been accepted as the engine of economic growth of any nation. Small and Medium Enterprises are the backbone of the economies, because it trigger employment, output, export, poverty alleviation, economic empowerment, economic development etc. in developed as well as in developing countries. It is more important to developing countries as the poverty and unemployment are burning problems. MSMEs have been playing a momentous role in overall economic development of a country like India where millions of people are unemployed or underemployed. Therefore, the growth of small sectors is essential for the growth in the GDP, employment generation, total manufacturing production and export. India, being one of the fastest growing economies of the world, needs to pay an honest attention for the utmost growth of MSMEs for its increased contribution in above areas.

This research attempts to explore the importance of cluster-based systems in preparation for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to go global, and it is an ongoing research. The findings of this research are aimed at providing insights to policy makers, academicians, and practitioners with the objective of creating initiatives, strategies, and policies, which reflect the primary aim of supporting SMEs in managing global challenges. SMEs that are cluster-based have the potential to facilitate the successful inclusion of SMEs in the growth of productivity and networks of global distribution. Most Asian developing countries are in the dark when it comes to this matter. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the relations between the capabilities of the networks and clusters in developing SMEs’ preparedness in facing business players in the global arena. This study’s scope includes specific Asian developing countries. Even though the issue of clusters in SMEs has been well researched in developed countries, such empirical studies are still lacking in the Asian region despite its prevalent collectivism practice. In the concluding analysis, the study intends to develop a model emphasizing the cluster-based industrial SMEs toward globalization.

—In this paper, a conceptual framework to apply many techniques for implementing lean in the high-variety low-volume (HVLV) environment is presented. Lean production has increasingly being implemented as a potential solution for many organizations. Anyway, the lean formula is applicable directly only to the make-to-stock business, but the make-to-order (MTO) product environment has to adapt lean manufacturing principle. The method of this paper has a two-phase quantitative framework to transform small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to be lean. Phase 1 has three interrelated components: (1) re-engineering an organization by using the power of computer simulation combined with business process. (2) Value stream mapping (VSM) is used to create a map of both value and waste in a given process. This tool has also a main drawback for job shop facility because many value streams are composed of hundreds of industrial parts and products. (3) Integrative supplier relationship is one of the most critical factors to maintain an advantage in the increasing levels of competition. Phase 2 performs a just in time production schedule by using ant colony optimization technique combines with a simulation tool. The aims of this paper are to develop a suitable lean manufacturing system for SMEs and to study the performance of the system for improving effectiveness. The result shows how to combine lean concept with simulation optimization, the step of this framework to obtain the optimization solution.
