Transformation from conventional manufacturing system to lean manufacturing system has enabled many manufacturing companies to reduce waste and ultimately achieve operational excellence. Unfortunately, there were also many reported cases where manufacturers failed to sustain the transformation until they achieve the ultimate result. Converting organization’s culture into the lean culture is often claimed as one of the mechanisms to sustain lean transformation in manufacturing organizations. Thus, measuring to what level lean manufacturers have converted their organization’s culture relative to lean culture characteristics is critical. Selfadministered questionnaire is a practical research instrument to measure the level of lean culture in multiple manufacturing organizations that are located in far-reaching geographical as it saves time, money and effort. In this paper, 36 questionnaire items for measuring lean culture has been designed. These items can be used as parameters for predicting sustainability of lean transformation using statistical analysis such as linear regression or structural equation modelling.

Provided that green supply chain management (GSCM) practices that integrate ecological thinking have been emphasized by increasing works of research, the impacts that may be posed by these practices on the environmental sustainability of manufacturing companies are not unexpected. Nevertheless, GSCM is capable of improving the performance of manufacturing firms in various aspects. Pertaining to this, this research aims to explore the application of GSCM practices and the effects they pose on organizational performance. To be specific, in this study, the results of the application of a set of internal and external GSCM practices on various aspects of organizational performance were investigated. Furthermore, according to the data collected, which were from 121 food, pharmaceuticals survey questionnaires, and chemical manufacturing companies in Palestine, statistical analyses were conducted. Moreover, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was utilized for the assessment of the hypotheses associated with the application of the internal and external GSCM practices and organizational performance. However, the findings of this research will be important specifically for the manufacturing organizations which aim for the enhancement of their organizational performance.

Abstract This paper addresses the needs of SMEs manufacturing companies which due to their limited resources are often unable to introduce radical changes in their strategies. The main focus is on analyzing the principles of lean manufacturing and management regarding their potential contribution to building a company's competitive advantage. The paper analyses lean from a strategic management viewpoint while combining its implementation with achieving a competitive advantage. The ultimate result is a framework for lean implementation aimed at building a competitive advantage for companies. The proposed framework focuses on the idea of a closed loop with embedded sustainability.

Unfortunately, there were also many reported cases where manufacturers failed to sustain the transformation until they achieve the ultimate result. Therefore, this article aimed to review existing Lean Transformation Sustainability (LTS) models that might help scholars and practitioners gain better insights on how to sustain lean transformation. This article compiled 37 LTS models through assistance of online bibliographic databases. The review study found that many researchers have proposed original models which involved high participation of practitioners and to some extent consultants in the development of LTS models. It was also found that a huge number of inconsistent elements were used to propose the LTS models. The study findings provided direction towards future research opportunities such as the development of LTS assessment model that encompassed standard set of elements for generalisation.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide valid and reliable constructs for lean manufacturing (LM) for assessing its implementation level in order to target areas of improvement. Design/methodology/approach Based on an extensive review on LM literature and content validity assessment from practitioners and academicians, nine LM constructs were identified. Measurement items for each construct were developed to become a complete questionnaire. The questionnaire booklets were distributed to large and discrete manufacturing companies in Indonesia. Out of 1,000 survey questionnaires sent, 236 usable responses were returned giving response rate of 23.60 percent. Subsequently, an empirical assessment on the constructs was done by using structural equation modeling approach. Findings The study identified the valid and reliable LM constructs, consisting of nine LM constructs and 64 measurement items. The study found that all the constructs are complementary and mutually supportive with each other. Indeed, it suggests the holistic implementation of all the LM practices. Research limitations/implications Owing the time and resource constraint, this study only involved large and discrete process manufacturing industries in Indonesia. Hence, the generalization of the result is slightly limited. More studies in several different contexts are required. Practical implications This study provided a valuable tool for researchers for gaining deeper understanding regarding the LM and its implementation. For practitioners, it is useful to evaluate the degree of LM employment in their companies, to target area of improvement, as well as to take possible actions in attempting to enhance the organizational performance. More importantly, practitioners should adopt all the LM practices in a holistic manner. Originality/value This study is the first attempt to develop LM constructs for evaluating the LM implementation in Indonesia.

In today’s hyper-competitive manufacturing world, the rapidly changing landscape has put new demands on organizations, and they need to reinvent themselves by injecting new strategies in order to stay ahead of the competition. Therefore, to achieve world-class performance and competitiveness in the global environment and competition, there is immense pressure on manufacturing organizations with limited resources to invariably pursue main drivers to enable them to improve process innovation. In this backdrop, this questionnaire-based study investigates the impact of various enabling practices on process innovation of manufacturing organizations. The questionnaire package included scales of lean manufacturing (LM), organizational culture (OC), human resource management (HRM), total quality management (TQM), supply chain management (SCM) and process innovation (PI). The data were collected through convenient sampling technique from presidents, CEO’s, directors, managers and senior supervisors of different functional areas of large-scale organizations. The theoretical model was analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) through AMOS®. The key findings revealed positive and significant relationships of LM, HRM and OC as drivers with TQM and SCM. The results also demonstrated affirmative and significant associations of TQM and SCM with PI. Similarly, the outcomes indicated that TQM and SCM, as carriers, partially mediate the relationships of LM, HRM and OC with PI. Overall, the findings elucidate the imperativeness for manufacturing organizations to reinforce their mediators (TQM and SCM practices) while effectively implementing LM, HRM and OC practices as drivers of PI. The study has important implications for the organizations seeking to determine the relative importance of various practices as an effective source of process innovation.

Purpose The purpose of this research paper is to evaluate the contributions of 5S implementation in the Indian manufacturing industries and its impact on the enhancement of their business performance. Design/methodology/approach The research study has been accomplished in the large number of manufacturing organizations that have successfully imbibed the 5S technique or are in the process of implementing 5S initiatives alone or along with other lean manufacturing practices. An elaborated “5S Questionnaire” has been designed to determine the contextual factors and their impact on the enhancement of business performance. Findings The results reveal that the majority of organizations have shown total commitment toward the implementation and objective realization of 5S quality policy at all levels in the organizations. The implementation of 5S has facilitated manufacturing organizations to accrue significant benefits such as improvement in overall organizational, productivity, quality, safety, employee morale values, effective workspace utilization, and cost optimizations. The results also show the elimination of serious chronic manufacturing system problems such as delays, breakdown, demoralized employees, declining profits, and dissatisfied customers through holistic 5S implementation. Research limitations/implications The limitation of the study is that it encompasses only the manufacturing organizations, while a similar study can also be conducted in services sector also. Originality/value The study highlights the detailed contributions of 5S principles in the development of manufacturing organizations and its impact on the enhancement of business performance for remaining competitive in global market world.

In the literature arena, it is claimed that lean manufacturing has been implemented successfully in organizations. However, lean manufacturing has been finding little application in classical manufacturing organizations. A careful study of the literature would indicate that non-value adding activities have been occurring in classical manufacturing organizations and preventing the successful implementation of lean manufacturing. In order to overcome this deficient situation, the research reported in this paper was carried out. By carrying out this research, non-value adding activities were mapped with lean manufacturing strategies. In the beginning, 50 non-value adding activities and 27 lean manufacturing strategies were gathered from the literature arena. Through critical thinking, the non-value adding activities were mapped with lean manufacturing strategies. The list containing this map presented in this paper will be useful to the engineers and managers for successfully implementing lean manufacturing in classical manufacturing organizations.

<span>Manufacturing organizations implemented Business Intelligence (BI) due to many advantages offered by it. The lack of research on the acceptance of BI in manufacturing motivates the initiative in this study to have an understanding of the factors that influence the acceptance of BI in manufacturing sector. Therefore, the research proposes a model which indicates the acceptance factors of BI in manufacturing. An integrated model consisting of underlying models of Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Expectation Confirmation Theory (ECT) and Task-Technology Fit (TTF) will be developed. The new model will formulate 19 hypotheses and 11 factors contributing to the continuance and acceptance of BI. The model will be tested using quantitative and qualitative survey conducted to Malaysian manufacturing companies and validated using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to investigate the causal and mediating relationships between the factors. The expected result is hoping to suggest that selected factors in the model are positively related towards the acceptance of BI in manufacturing. The results are also hoping to guide future initiatives by industrial practitioners to develop and distribute BI to the manufacturing market.</span>

Purpose: The aim of this study is to examine the mediating role of empowerment on the relationship between paternalistic leadership styles such as benevolent, moral, and authoritarian and employee innovative behavior. Design/methodology/approach: The data were collected from 390 employees of manufacturing companies in the Republic of Korea. To assess the validity of hypotheses we used a structural equation modeling procedure. Findings: The findings suggest that empowerment mediates the relationships among moral and authoritarian leadership styles and employee innovative behavior. However, results indicate that employee innovative behavior does not mediate the associations between benevolent leadership style and employee innovative behavior. Originality/value: Our work is the first to investigate the mediating role of empowerment on the link between paternalistic leadership styles such as benevolent, moral, and authoritarian and employee innovative behavior.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to assess the differences in importance assigned by manufacturing or service organizations to topics related to operations management and its attendant body of knowledge. Design/methodology/approach The authors did this by cataloguing and analyzing vacancy announcements related to operations management, presented by manufacturing and services companies in major Brazilian human resources websites. Findings The results show that manufacturing companies primarily hire personnel with skills in routine process management, quality management, lean manufacturing, ergonomics and work organization. Service companies generally seek professionals with knowledge and experience in logistics, supply chain management and project management. Research limitations/implications This study presents some limitations that reduce the power of its conclusions. There is some degree of subjectivity in the interpretation of the contents of the analyzed ads. In order to reduce this problem, the authors who did the tabulation of data marked the situations for which there were some doubts about the classification, discussing them with the other author, until they reached a consensus on the best way to classify each one. Originality/value The discussion about the importance assigned by manufacturing and service companies to the topics of operations management is crucial for not only the results obtained, but also to stimulate the debate on topics that comprise or should comprise the body of knowledge of operations management, and the way they are incorporated into business practice. This provides an additional opportunity to reflect on the potential of operations management in supporting business managers now and in the future.
