The spectral dependence of the transmittance as a function of the film thickness, the refractive index of the substrate, bandgap and the Cauchy parameters (α and β) of the semiconductor material was determined from condition of interference extremes. The absorption coefficient was simulated for the structure – thin film/substrate. Cadmium chalcogenides (CdTe, CdSe, and CdS) deposited on quartz substrates was selected as model samples. Experimental behavior of substrate transmittance was used to determine its refractive index. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental data and shows good agreement.

The nonlinear optical properties of pepper oil are studied by diffraction ring patterns and Z-scan techniques with continuous wave beam from solid state laser at 473 nm wavelength. The nonlinear refractive index of the sample is calculated by both techniques. The sample show high nonlinear refractive index. Based on Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction integral, the far-field intensity distributions of ring patterns have been calculated. It is found that the experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical results. Also the optical limiting property of pepper oil is reported. The results obtained in this study prove that the pepper oil has applications in nonlinear optical devices.

According to several known experiments, an increase of the incoming flow air content can increase the hydrofoil lift coefficient. The presented theoretical study shows that such increase is associated with the decrease of the fluid density at the cavity surface. This decrease is caused by entrainment of air bubbles to the cavity from the surrounding flow. The theoretical results based on such explanation are in a good agreement with the earlier published experimental data for NACA0015.

ABSTRACTA heterophase polydomain structure has been recently discovered in BiFeO3 epitaxial ferroelectric films, which provides large electromechanical responses. In this work, the formation of such a microstructure is explained by theory of elastic domains. The thermodynamics of the heterophase polydomain microstructure is analyzed to predict the equilibrium volume fraction of domains at different film-substrate lattice misfits. Extrinsic mechanical and piezoelectric properties are discussed for the heterophase polydomains. It is shown that an applied electric field, which increases electrostatic interaction between domains, may lead to dramatic increase of piezo response. The results of this work are in good agreement with experimental data for BiFeO3.

This paper deals with the problem of eigenfrequencies and eigenvectors for rings whose cross section may be decomposed in basic rectangular cross sections. The solution is derived from a solution of the in-plane eigenvalue problem for rectangular cross-section thick rings. A good agreement between theoretical results and experimental data is obtained.

A general THD theory and a comparison between theoretical and experimental results are presented. The generalized Reynolds equation, the energy equation in the film, and the heat transfer equation in the bush and the shaft are solved simultaneously. The cavitation in the film, the lubricant recirculation, and the reversed flow at the inlet are taken into account. In addition, the thermoelastic deformations are also calculated in order to define the film thickness. Good agreement is found between experimental data and theoretical results which include thermoelastic displacements of both the shaft and the bush.

Elastic modulus of thin homogeneous films can be determined by indenting the specimen to various depths and extrapolating the measured (apparent) E-values to zero penetration. The paper shows the application of five approximation functions for this purpose: linear, exponential, reciprocal exponential, Gao's, and the Doerner and Nix functions. Comparison of the results for 26 film/substrate combinations has shown that the indentation response of film/substrate composites can, in general, be described by the Gao analytical function. In determining the thin film modulus from experimental data, satisfactory results can also be obtained with the exponential function, while linear function may be used only for thick films where the relative depths of penetration are small. The article explains the pertinent procedures and gives practical recommendations for the testing.

This paper deals with friction and the field of temperature in the lubricant film of journal bearings. Theoretical results regarding the thermal behavior are checked with experimental data and good agreement is found. Emphasis is put on the variation of temperature and lubricant flow with the operating characteristics of the bearing and it is seen that theoretical predictions for minima of friction torque are backed by temperature measurements. Further on, the friction torque and the mechanism of heat dissipation in bearings are dealt with, in order to verify the assumptions used in the calculation schemes. The means of efficiently cooling the bearing are also discussed, as well as the part played by the divergent zone in this process.

This paper presents an analytical and experimental study of a cylindrical rod vibrating in a viscous fluid enclosed by a rigid, concentric cylindrical shell. A closed-form solution for the added mass and damping coefficient is obtained and a series of experiments with cantilevered rods vibrating in various viscous fluids is performed. Experimental data and theoretical results are in good agreement.

A thin film of nematic liquid crystal (ZLI 1085) is sandwiched between two horizontally mounted glass blocks, whose faces have been treated to align the molecules of the liquid parallel to the plane of the blocks. By moving one block relative to the other in its own plane, the liquid crystal is subjected to an oscillatory linear shear. Above a certain frequency-dependent amplitude, mechanical Williams domains of alternating bright and dark stripes are observed perpendicular to the direction of shear. A theoretical analysis of this phenomenon is carried out to provide predictions for both the thickness of the stripes and the critical amplitude as a function of frequency. Good agreement is found between the experimental and theoretical results.
