An Investigation was carried out to study the effect of red mud reinforcement in Al-6Si-0.45Mg alloy (A356) for improving hardness, wear rate and co-efficient friction. The red mud 53 micron size particles collected from MALCO, Mettur, Tamil Nadu, India, was preheated in a furnace to 500o C and mixed with molten Al-6Si-0.45Mg alloy to make the composite specimens. Al-6Si-0.45Mg alloy-red mud composite specimens were manufactured by stir casting technique using Al-6Si-0.45Mg alloy as matrix and reinforced with 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% volume percentages red mud as the reinforcement. The Al-6Si-0.45Mg alloy–red mud composite specimens were T6 heat treated to improve the mechanical properties. The artificial aging time and aging duration were varied to study their effect on mechanical properties of the composites. Then the specimens hardness, wear rate and coefficient of friction were tested as per ASTM standards. It was found that the hardness increased when the red mud content was increased in the base alloy at all the heat treatment conditions. The peak age timing which gives highest hardness was found to decrease with increased red mud content. The wear rate was decreased when the hardness was increased. The effect of solution treatment and artificial aging on the microstructure was also studied by microscopy.

The effect of AlN addition in Al-Si alloy composites on the mechanical properties and dry wear behaviour were studied using pre-selected parameter conditions. In this work, high purity of AlN powders with different weight percentage of 5, 7 and 10 were used as reinforced materials for the composites. Morphology of the reinforced composite indicated that both silicon grains and inter-metallic compounds were surrounded by the AlN particles. The presence of AlN in the Al-Si alloy showed a significant improvement in tensile properties in which 7wt% of AlN addition increased up to 25% compared to those of without any reinforcements. Fracture morphologies with small dimples, tear ridges and necking features indicated that ductile fractures had occurred on the Al-Si composites. At 25N load, alloys with 5wt% of AlN exhibited high wear resistances whereas at 70N, alloys with 10wt% of AlN showed a great improvement in wear resistance. SEM investigation also revealed that the presence of wear was also marked with prominent grooves, craters and scoring marks. Overall, alloys with 7wt% AlN addition possessed great improvement in hardness, tensile and wear resistance properties.

Abstract The silicon carbide (SiC) reinforcement with aluminium alloy 7xxx series has been found to be limited value as per the mechanical properties and wear behaviour of previous studies. In order to improve limited mechanical properties of hybrid aluminium metal matrix composites, the SiC and OFHC Cu-Fe29Ni17Co reinforcement has been added with AA7075 alloy. Hence, the AA7075/SiC/Cu-Fe-Ni hybrid composites have been fabricated through a stir casting route under different weight percentages of SiC reinforcement. The mechanical properties such as hardness, compressive strength, tensile strength and wear rate have been investigated. The micro structure of hybrid composites found that the reinforcement particles in matrix alloy have been evenly spread. The silicon carbide and Cu-Fe-Ni alloy in aluminium solid solution has been found as well bonded interfacial reactions. The hardness, tensile strength, yield strength, compressive strength and wear rate were improved by 23.9 %, 48 %, 47 %, 15.3 % and 70 % for hybrid composite by adding 15 wt. %SiC and 15 wt. % Cu-Fe-Ni with AA7075 alloy, compared to matrix alloy.

Purpose – The paper aims to provide new observations about static strain ageing in aluminium (Al) alloys which are widely used in structural applications. Design/methodology/approach – The present work aims to provide theoretical and practical information to industries or researchers who may be interested in the effect of static strain ageing on mechanical properties of Al alloys. The data are sorted into the following sections: introduction, materials and experimental procedure, results and discussion and conclusions. Findings – Tensile strength, proof strength (0.2 per cent) and percentage elongation measurement were used to investigate the effect of strain ageing on the mechanical properties. Wear tests were performed by sliding the pin specimens, which were prepared from as-received, solution heat-treated, deformed and undeformed specimens after ageing, on high-speed tool steel (64 HRC). It is concluded that the variations in ageing time improved the strength and wear resistance of the 6063 Al alloy; however, a plastically deformed solution-treated alloy has higher strength and wear resistance than undeformed specimens for different ageing times at 180°C. Practical implications – A very useful source of information for industries using or planning to produce Al alloys. Originality/value – This paper fulfils an identified resource need and offers practical help to the industries.

The research article addresses the reciprocating wear behaviour of hybrid AA7075 reinforced with boron carbide and boron nitride through a stir-casting technique. The experiment involved varying wt.% of the secondary particle boron carbide (3, 6 and 9) while boron nitride (3) was kept as constant. The hybrid composites were characterised using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy. The hardness and tensile behaviour of the hybrid composites were evaluated. Reciprocating wear behaviour of the hybrid composites were examined using a tribometer by varying the wear parameters such as load and sliding distance. The results revealed that AA7075/6boron carbide/3boron nitride had better hardness, tensile and wear properties. The surface morphology of the wear samples was analysed using SEM.

Composite materials like Aluminium metal matrix composite is playing a very important role in manufacturing industries e.g. automobile and aerospace industries, due to their superior properties such as light weight, low density, high specific modulus, high fatigue strength etc., In this study Aluminium(Al 6061) is reinforced with Silicon Carbide particles and fabricated by Stir Casting Technique (vortex method). The MMC rectangular bars (samples) are prepared with Al6061 and SiC (28 µ size) as the reinforced particles by weight fraction from 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% of SiC. The microstructure analysis and Mechanical properties like Tensile Strength, Vickers Hardness and Charpy Impact Strength were investigated on prepared specimens. It is observed that the properties are increased with increasing of reinforced specimens by weight fraction.
