Evaluations of applicants to most university speech and hearing programs rely on quantitative measures such as undergraduate grade point averages (UGPA) and scores on the aptitude portions of the Graduate Record Examinations (GREs). However, the ability of these factors to predict success of students pursuing master’s degrees in speech-language pathology has not been verified. In an effort to select the students who are most likely to excel in our graduate program, an analysis of factors used to evaluate applications to our master’s program was undertaken. Information was extracted from records of students enrolled in the Indiana University MA program in speech-language pathology between 1992 and 1995. Students chosen for this analysis were considered to be among the top or bottom students in their class, as measured by final graduate GPA and scores on the PRAXIS examination. A discriminant analysis was performed using UGPA, scores on the verbal, quantitative, and analytical subtests of the GREs, undergraduate university, and undergraduate major as input variables. This analysis indicated that students’ achievement in a master’s program could be predicted with 93% accuracy on the basis of UGPA alone. By contrast, when GRE scores were used to calculate the discriminant function, classification accuracy reached only 63%. A cross-validation analysis classified a second group of randomly selected students with 80% accuracy. The results of the current investigation are compared to studies in other disciplines that indicate limited utility of GRE scores in the prediction of students’ success in master’s degree programs.

The article provides an overview of the Russian Master's program trends with an emphasis on the evolution of the curricula and the achievement of their new quality. Based on the secondary data analysis, the dynamics of the processes was assessed and the landscape of empirical studies of the second level of higher education was presented. A number of discussion issues related to the understanding of the present and future of Master's programs was outlined. The conclusion is made about the growth of interest in involvement in the Master`s programs. It was revealed that the development of different types and formats of curriculum with a focus on both foreign practices and Russian experience can be observed. It was proved that the most important decisions related to educational programs are focused on the formation of the Master's program product portfolio, the determination of strategic alternatives for its development, the choice of program management models and the development of external partnerships of universities to create new generation programs. It is becoming important for the academic community to find an answer to the question of new emphasis and approaches to the design of the educational process for the second level of higher education. The author comes to the conclusion that the efforts to develop Master's programs should be supported by «targeted» research, the results of which should form an information basis for making strategic and tactical decisions.

Models of making a purchase decision, traditionally used in marketing, can also be applied to the choice of applicants (buyers) of an educational program. Decision-making process on choosing a master’s program differs from the one of admission to a bachelor’s degree, and thus demands a special study. It is necessary to «tune» the communication and marketing tools for each stage passed by a student in the decision-making process. However, the existing research lacks a systematic approach to considering the stages of making a purchase decision as far as a master’s program choice is concerned. This paper presents a master’s program purchase decision model, which reflects the dynamics and time frames of the decision-making process passing various stages from the first to the fourth year of the bachelor’s degree. The empirical basis of the study is the data of a 2019 survey of HSE one-to-four-year undergraduates specializing in different spheres. To construct the model based on the study of factors and sources of information influencing the students’ choice, there were identified the time intervals of the main stages (understanding the problem, searching for information, and alternatives evaluation) of the students’ purchasing decision process. The proposed model will allow master’s programs to improve their communication strategies, considering the characteristics of various stages, which should provide a systematic influence over a potential consumer within the decision-making process when choosing a master’s program.

The article devoted to the changes in the levels of vocational education and the qualifications of graduates of higher education organizations. Simple parameters of graduates of a single-level Soviet higher school in the form of qualifications – the engineer was understandable to consumers and corresponded to the labor qualifications of workers, primarily enterprises. The transition of Russia’s higher education system to a multilevel system led to the establishment of incomprehensible qualifications for employers such as bachelor’s and master’s degrees for university graduates. It is offered to graduates of higher educational institutions, who have mastered the bachelor and master’s programs, to assign not the qualifications, but the academic degrees of bachelor and master. And for the «recognition» of graduates of various universities to give them an annex to the diploma with a list of formed competencies. Presented the stages of changing educational standards, beginning in 1994. Revealed the inconsistency of professional and educational standards regarding the formulation of requirements for the education of workers. The generalized content of the professional standard of a typical production specialist is disclosed. The levels of qualifications of the Labor Code are given. It is shown that graduates of higher education organizations that do not have professional experience will begin to acquire it for 4 or 5 skill levels. The basic level of qualification of bachelors and specialists is 6, which is confirmed in professional standards. Attention is drawn to the formation in the students of the aggregate of two groups of competences: professional and social, which meets the requirements of professional standards of specialists. To guarantee the quality of training, it is proposed to provide a competence model of graduates for approval and review to employers who will compare it with the official duties of employees of relevant qualification levels or with a professional standard.

Many higher education institutions have begun offering opportunities to earn credit for in-person courses through massive open online courses (MOOCs). This mixed-methods study examines the experiences of students participating in one of the first iterations of this trend: a blended professional master's degree program that admitted students based on performance in MOOC-based online courses. We found that the blended master's program attracted a cohort of highly educated mid-career professionals from developed countries who were looking for more flexible alternatives to traditional graduate programs. Success in the online courses was correlated with higher levels of prior formal education and effective use of learning strategies. Students who enrolled in the blended graduate program reported being academically prepared for their coursework and had higher GPAs (3.86, p<0.01) than students in the residential program (3.75). The findings of this study suggest that the technological affordances of MOOC-based online and blended degrees will neither transform higher education nor solve its most stubborn equity challenges, but there may be particular niches where they provide a valuable service to learners in particular programs and contexts.
