In this paper, Pd ions doped cerium conversion coating (CeCC/Pd) was deposited on AA2219-T87 aluminum alloy by electroplating. The microstructure and composition of the coating were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Corrosion behavior of AA2219-T87 aluminum alloy with the coating was investigated in 3.5wt.% NaCl solution at the room temperature. XRD and XPS results indicate the existence of cerium-oxide and palladium-oxide in the CeCC/Pd. Polarization curves show that the CeCC/Pd exhibits excellent corrosion resistance. The corrosion current density of the CeCC/Pd decreases by two orders of magnitude compared with the CeCC. The improvement of corrosion resistance would be attributed to the small grain size, good compactness and adhesive strength of the composite coatings.

The effect of Sn addition on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of extruded Mg–5Zn–4Al–xSn (0, 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 wt %) alloys was investigated by optical microscopy (OM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemical measurements, and immersion tests. Microstructural results showed that the average grain size decreased to some degree and the amount of precipitates increased with the increasing amount of Sn. The extruded Mg–5Zn–4Al–xSn alloy mainly consisted of α-Mg, Mg32(Al,Zn)49, and Mg2Sn phases as the content of Sn was above 1 wt %. Electrochemical measurements indicated that the extruded Mg–5Zn–4Al–1Sn (ZAT541) alloy presented the best corrosion performances, with corrosion potential (Ecorr) and corrosion current density (Icorr) values of −1.3309 V and 6.707 × 10−6 A·cm−2, respectively. Furthermore, the corrosion mechanism of Sn is discussed in detail.

Abstract Ceramic coatings were prepared on the surface of 7050 highstrength aluminum alloy using micro-arc oxidation in an aluminate electrolyte with added graphene. To analyze the surface morphology, roughness, phase composition, and corrosion resistance, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron, and electrochemical measurements were used, respectively. The addition of 9 g · L-1 of graphene to the electrolyte decreased the micro-pore size of the composite coatings and improved the density. In addition, with the addition of graphene, the roughness was the lowest, and the corrosion resistance was significantly improved.

The objective of this study was to improve the surface properties, hardness, wear resistance and electrochemical corrosion resistance of #45 steel. To this end, Ni–P–ZrO2–CeO2 composite coatings were prepared on the surface of #45 steel using the jet-electrodeposition technique by varying the current density from 20 to 60 A/dm2. The effect of current density on the performance of the composite coatings was evaluated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were applied to explore the surface topography, elemental composition, hardness and electrochemical corrosion resistance of the composite coatings. The results showed that with the increase in the current density, the hardness, wear resistance, and electrochemical corrosion resistance tends to increase first and then decrease. At a current density of 40 A/dm2, the hardness reached a maximum of 688.9 HV0.1, the corrosion current reached a minimum of 8.2501 × 10−5 A·cm−2, and the corrosion potential reached a maximum of −0.45957 V. At these values, the performance of the composite coatings was optimal.

In this paper, pulsed arc ion plating was applied for preparing Ti–Al–N coatings. The effects of different process parameters on the structure and corrosion resistance properties of Ti–Al–N coating were studied by changing the temperature. The microstructures, morphology features and the corrosion resistance of the different temperatures of Ti–Al–N coating were investigated to simulate the corrosion conditions of seawater. All the samples (prepared at [Formula: see text]C, [Formula: see text]C, [Formula: see text]C and [Formula: see text] were measured in 3.5[Formula: see text]wt.% NaCl solution at [Formula: see text]C and characterized by potentiodynamic polarization curves, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The corrosion resistance of carbon steel was improved by the coating modification. The results showed that the sample prepared at [Formula: see text]C possesses excellent corrosion resistance where corrosion current density can only reach to 11.176[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]A/cm2, Meanwhile, SEM images also revealed that the microstructure of the sample is much smoother and nearly no defects can be observed.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper was to prepare the cerium-based conversion coating on AZ91D magnesium alloy, and its compositions, micro-morphology, corrosion resistance and the chemical valence state of the film elements were investigated. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology comprised preparation of coatings at different temperatures, which then were characterized using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, an electrochemistry workstation and by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Findings – The conversion coating had a micro-cracked morphology. The conversion coatings were composed of MgO (or Mg-OH), CeO2 and Ce2O3. The best corrosion resistance of the cerium passivation film appeared when the treatment temperature was about 35°C. Originality/value – The corrosion current densities of conversion coatings were lower by one to two orders of magnitude than the corrosion current density of the blank sample. The rare earth passivation coating prepared under the best condition could reduce the corrosion current to 3.548 × 10−6 A/cm2.

In this paper, we made two different chemical conversion coatings on aluminum alloy by TiOSO4 and Na2WO4. The morphology of the chemical conversion surface layers were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The microcosmic phase structures were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Electrochemical method was used to study the coatings corrosion resistance. The results indicated that the two conversion coatings were crystal structure material, the surface of coating were both show pothole structure. TiOSO4 coating have better corrosion resistance than Na2WO4 coating.

This work researches the influence of the nickel content on the structural and anticorrosive properties of ZrSiTiN films deposited by means of reactive co-sputtering on alloys of Ti6Al4V. The morphology and structure were analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the chemical composition was identified via X-ray scattering spectroscopy (EDS). The corrosion resistance was studied using potentiodynamic polarization (PP) tests employing a 3.5% by weight NaCl solution. In the films, an increase of Ni up to 6.97 at% was observed, while in XRD the FCC phase of (Zr, Ti) N was identified, with a mixed orientation in planes (111) and (200), which tended to diminish with the increase of Ni. Finally, with the addition of Ni, the corrosion current densities were reduced from 5.56 𝑥 10−8 to 2.64 𝑥 10−9 𝐴/𝑐m2. The improvement in the corrosion resistance is due to the effect of the Ni on the microstructure of the system (Zr, Ti) N, which can improve the quality of the passive film and prevent crystalline defects and corrosion zones.

Pure Zn and Zn–ERGO composite coatings were prepared by direct current electrodeposition on 304 stainless steel. Samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), and laser Raman spectroscopy (Raman). Results obtained have shown that the concentration of GO sheets in zinc sulfate electrolyte has an important effect on the preferred crystal orientation and the surface morphology of Zn–ERGO composite coatings. A study of the corrosion behavior of the coatings by Tafel polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS) methods leads to the conclusion that the Zn-1.0 g/L ERGO composite coating possesses the best corrosion resistance compared to the pure Zn coating and other composite coatings in this study.

A chemical conversion coating on 5052 aluminum alloy was prepared by using K2ZrF6 and K2TiF6 as the main salts, KMnO4 as the oxidant and NaF as the accelerant. The surface morphology, structure and composition were analyzed by SEM, EDS, FT–IR and XPS. The corrosion resistance of the conversion coating was studied by salt water immersion and polarization curve analysis. The influence of fluorosilane (FAS-17) surface modification on its antifouling property was also discussed. The results showed that the prepared conversion coating mainly consisted of AlF3·3H2O, Al2O3, MnO2 and TiO2, and exhibited good corrosion resistance. Its corrosion potential in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution was positively shifted about 590 mV and the corrosion current density was dropped from 1.10 to 0.48 μA cm−2. By sealing treatment in NiF2 solution, its corrosion resistance was further improved yielding a corrosion current density drop of 0.04 μA cm−2. By fluorosilane (FAS-17) surface modification, the conversion coating became hydrophobic due to low-surface-energy groups such as CF2 and CF3, and the contact angle reached 136.8°. Moreover, by FAS-17 modification, the corrosion resistance was enhanced significantly and its corrosion rate decreased by about 25 times.

Graphene oxide (GO) sheet and ultrasonic field (UF) were successfully employed to produce Ni–B/GO and UF–Ni–B/GO composite coatings on Q235 mild steel by electroless plating. The composite coatings’ structure and surface morphology were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Results showed that GO was successfully co-deposited in the Ni–B alloy. Moreover, UF–Ni–B/GO composite coatings have smoother surface and thicker cross-section than others. The microhardness and corrosion resistance of the sample coatings were determined using Vickers hardness tests, Tafel electrochemical tests and electrochemical impedance measurements (EIS) in 3.5[Formula: see text]wt.% NaCl solution to receive the effect of GO and ultrasonic. The findings indicated that UF–Ni–B/GO exhibited optimum hardness (856[Formula: see text]HV) and enhanced corrosion resistance (6.38 [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] over the Ni–B and Ni–B/GO coatings. Due to these interesting properties of the coating, it could be used as a protective material in the automotive and aerospace industries for parts of machines that were manipulated in high temperature and corrosive environments.
