ABSTRACTCellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are high-strength sustainable nanomaterials, the incorporation of which to a host polymer matrix can potentially lead to nanocomposites with superior mechanical properties. However, the mismatch in surface energy of CNCs and common structural polymers is a challenge that needs to be overcome to prevent the aggregation of CNCs and ensure the robust integration of CNCs into a polymer matrix. Herein, we report an approach involving the functionalization of CNCs with maleated-anhydride polypropylene (MAPP) through diethylenetriamine (DETA) linkers to significantly enhance the compatibility between CNCs and polypropylene. Polypropylene/modified CNC nanocomposites displayed 74% and 76% increase in elastic modulus in comparison to neat polypropylene and polypropylene/untreated CNC nanocomposites, respectively. The tensile strength was also higher for nanocomposites with modified CNC than neat polypropylene, as well as nanocomposites with untreated CNCs. The tensile strength at 5.5% strain of polypropylene/modified CNC nanocomposites was 32% and 28% larger that of polypropylene and polypropylene/untreated CNC nanocomposites, respectively. Finally, such CNC-based nanocomposites have a lower density than many competitive systems resulting in opportunities to propagate this environmentally-responsible technology to nanocomposites used in additive manufacturing, automotive applications, construction materials and consumer products.

Concrete is one of the construction materials that is currently widely used by the community to build buildings. This is evidenced by the large number of construction of buildings, roads, irrigation channels and other construction. Until now, Indonesian people still use a little concrete. The problem that we want to know is how the effect of adding mosquito wire fiber to compressive strength, tensile strength and elastic modulus of concrete using concrete quality fc '= 19.3 MPa. The purpose of this study is to add additional mosquito wire fiber can be used as an added component of concrete components that have high strength and good quality but are economically valuable for compressive strength, tensile strength and elastic modulus. The method used is secondary and primary data. The results of this study are compressive strength 0% = 15,839 MPa, 1% = 13,657 MPa, 3% = 10,137 MPa, 5% = 9,173 MPa, tensile strength 0% = 7,392 MPa, 1% = 8,205 MPa, 3% = 8,504 MPa, 5% = 9,038 MPa. and elastic modulus 0% = 29131,385 N / mm2, 1% = 14575.68 N / mm2, 3% = 10303,133 N / mm2, 5% = 7030,893 N / mm2. The results of this study found that the addition of mosquito wire fiber can reduce the compressive strength of concrete and modulus. While the tensile strength and modulus of elasticity increase. So that the mosquito wire is not suitable for concrete compressive strength and elastic modulus.

Abstract Many researchers have investigated alternative sources to overcome the problem of conventional building material polluting the environment by the development of green self-compacting concrete in the construction industry. The best alternative solution is to utilise non-conventional construction materials like agricultural wastes. Meanwhile, self-compacting concrete (SCC) is considered as high strength as well as high-performance concrete. The demerits, which include tensile and flexural strength, can be improved by incorporating coir fibres. The utilisation of coir fibres also modifies self-compacting concrete performance after cracking and improves the toughness. This study defines an experimental investigation of the mechanical properties of self-compacting concrete containing coir fibres (CF) with different percentages being 0%, 0.2%, 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% at 7- and 28-days water curing. The mechanical properties include the slump flow and compressive and tensile strength were examined. The outcomes demonstrated that a required slump flow for self-compacting concrete was achieved using coir fibres up to 1%, beyond which it reduced the slump significantly. The length of fibre and proportion of fibres directly affected the workability. The compressive strength was 10% to 15% enhanced with the incorporation of coir fibres up to 0.5%; after that, the strength was slightly reduced, and tensile strength was 30% to 50% improved compared to conventional self-compacting concrete up to 1% of coir fibres incorporation in the SCC mix, after which it rapidly reduced.

An exceptionally high-strength rare-earth-free Mg–8Al–3Bi (AB83) alloy was successfully fabricated via extrusion and caliber rolling. After three-pass caliber rolling, the homogenous microstructure of the as-extruded AB83 alloy was changed to a necklace-like bimodal structure consisting of ultra-fine dynamic recrystallized (DRXed) grains and microscale deformed grains. Additionally, both Mg17Al12 and Mg3Bi2 nanoprecipitates, undissolved microscale Mg17Al12, and Mg3Bi2 particles were dispersed in the matrix of caliber-rolled (CRed) AB83 alloy. The CRed AB83 sample demonstrated a slightly weakened basal texture, compared with that of the as-extruded sample. Consequently, CRed AB83 showed a tensile yield strength of 398 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of 429 MPa, and an elongation of 11.8%. The superior mechanical properties of the caliber-rolled alloy were mainly originated from the combined effects of the necklace-like bimodal microstructure containing ultra-fine DRXed grains, the homogeneously distributed nanoprecipitates and microscale particles, as well as the slightly modified basal texture.

Stainless steels have widespread applications due to their good corrosion resistance, but for certain types of large naval constructions, other requirements are imposed such as high strength and toughness , and modified magnetic characteristics. The magnetic characteristics of a 302 type metastable austenitic stainless steel has been assessed after various cold rolling treatments designed to increase strength by strain inducement of martensite. A grade 817M40 low alloy medium carbon steel was used as a reference material. The metastable austenitic stainless steel after solution treatment possesses a fully austenitic microstructure. However its tensile strength , in the solution treated condition , is low.Cold rolling results in the strain induced transformation to α’- martensite in austenitic matrix and enhances the tensile strength. However , α’-martensite is ferromagnetic , and its introduction to an otherwise fully paramagnetic matrix alters the magnetic response of the material. An example of the mixed martensitic-retained austenitic microstructure obtained after the cold rolling experiment is provided in the SEM micrograph of Figure 1.
