ABSTRACTThe processing of a TNM powder (Ti-43.9Al-4Nb-0.95Mo-0.1B, in at.%) by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) was investigated for the first time. SPS experiments were performed at varying temperatures. The microstructures of the products were analyzed and interpreted in reference to the available phase diagram. Results of tensile tests conducted at room temperature are also presented.

This work deals with the consolidation of a TiAl alloy powder by spark plasma sintering (SPS). Pre-alloyed powder with a composition of Ti–48Al–2Cr–2Nb (at.%) was consolidated in a SPS furnace at temperatures between 1200[Formula: see text]C and 1325[Formula: see text]C and with a pressure of 50 MPa. The microstructures obtained after SPS depend on the sintering temperature. Tensile tests at room temperature were performed. The alloy SPSed at temperatures not less than 1250[Formula: see text]C exhibits good properties at room temperature.

In this study, we focused on the sintering performance of Ti-4.5Al-3V-2Mo-2Fe (SP-700) and mechanical properties of SP-700 reinforced with titanium boride (TiB/SP-700) fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS). TiB whiskers formed in titanium by a solid-state reaction of titanium and TiB2 particles were analyzed with scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The TiB/SP-700 was sintered at temperatures of 1073, 1173, and 1273 K and a pressure of 70 MPa for 10, 30, and 50 min. The volume fraction of TiB ranged from 1.7 vol.% to 19.9 vol.%. Tensile tests of TiB/SP-700 were conducted at room temperature, and the effect of TiB volume fraction on the tensile properties was investigated.

TiAl alloy with a composition of Ti-43Al-5V-4Nb-Y (at.%) was prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The TiAl powders were sintered between 650°C and 1300°C for 5 min under different loads. With the increasing of the temperature, the diffusion of the elements can be observed. Full compaction is achieved in a short period of time and the overall processing duration does not exceed 30 min. A fully lamellar structure was seen in the TiAl alloy after heat treatment. The microstructures of the samples were determined by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Their mechanical properties were evaluated by tensile tests performed at room temperature

Nano-Y2O3 reinforced Ti-47.7Al-7.1Nb-(V, Cr) alloy was fabricated by a powder metallurgy route using spark plasma sintering (SPS), and the influence of nano-Y2O3 contents on the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated systematically. The results revealed that the ultimate tensile strength and elongation of the alloy were 570 ± 28 MPa and 1.7 ± 0.6% at 800 °C, 460 ± 23 MPa and 6.1 ± 0.4% at 900 °C with no nano-Y2O3, 662 ± 24 MPa and 5.5 ± 0.5% at 800 °C, and 466 ± 25 MPa and 16.5 ± 0.8% at 900 °C with 0.05 at% nano-Y2O3 addition, respectively. Due to the fine-grain strengthening and the second-phase strengthening, both tensile strength and elongation of the high-Nb TiAl alloy were enhanced with the addition of nano-Y2O3.

A simple approach, order–disorder transition (ODT), has been developed to synthesize a novel glass using ZSM-5 as starting materials. In this process, the ZSM-5 powders were pressed uniaxially in a graphite die and rapidly sintered using spark plasma sintering (SPS). High-resolution transmission electron microscopic images revealed that a few crystalline zeolite fragments were still preserved locally inside the SPS consolidated sample. Vickers microhardness and fracture toughness of this as-prepared transparent glass sample at room temperature reaches 7.3 ± 0.2 GPa and 2.0 ± 0.3MPa·m1/2, respectively. It is very interesting that these novel bulk transparent glasses exhibit ultraviolet photoluminescence (PL) properties at about ∼360 nm.

Ni-Cu bulk alloys were successfully prepared with spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique from nanopowders obtained by the arc plasma evaporation method. The tensile tests indicated that the tensile strength of Ni-Cu bulk alloy sintered by SPS at 600°C was the highest among the Ni-Cu bulk alloys sintered at different temperature and much higher than that of bulk ingots. Through investigating the fractographs of the bulk alloy, the intrinsic reasons for the tensile strength of the sintered specimens were discussed.

The present study investigates the high temperature tribological performance of spark plasma sintered, nano- and micron-sized tungsten carbide (WC) bonded by 9 wt.% cobalt (Co). The composites were fabricated using a two-step procedure of mixing followed by spark plasma sintering (SPS). Ball-on-disc wear tests were conducted at a normal load of 30 N, linear speed of 0.1 m/s under dry conditions and at three different temperatures (room temperature, 300 °C and 600 °C). Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), optical profilometry and energy dispersive X-ray (EDS) spectroscopy were used to analyze the surface morphology and the wear track area. At room temperature, it was observed that the nano-sized WC composites exhibited better wear resistance than the micron-sized WC composites. The wear resistance of the nano-sized samples declined significantly relative to that of the micron-sized samples with an increase in temperature. This decline in performance was attributed to the higher surface area of nano-sized WC particles, which underwent rapid oxidation at elevated temperatures, resulting in poor wear resistance. The wear rate observed at 600 °C for the micron-sized WC composites was 75% lower than that of the nano-sized cemented carbide. Oxidative wear was observed to be the predominant wear mechanism for both cemented carbide samples at elevated temperatures.

Powder of Ti-46at%Al alloy was synthesized through mechanical activation (MA) and then sintered and concurrently consolidated in a short sintering time of 900 s by using spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. The XRD and SEM profiles show that the microstructures of TiAl alloys contained γ TiAl and small amount α-2 Ti3Al phase, whose amount can be controlled by the sintering temperature. The compacts retained the original fine-grained fully densified bodies by avoiding an excessively high sintering temperature. The alloys sintered at higher temperature with this process showed a coarser microstructure. So it is possible to produce dense nanostructured TiAl alloys by mechanically activated spark plasma sintering (MASPS) within a very short period of time.
