Tough, Ductile High-Temperature Intermetallic Compounds: Results of a Four-Year Survey.

ABSTRACTA four-year survey of high-temperature intermetallic compounds has been aimed at identifying potentially useful structural materials for aerospace and aircraft engine applications. Since the good properties of high strength and stiffness at high temperatures are typically negated by brittleness at ambient temperature, new materials must have roomtemperature toughness or ductility. Screening has been done of 90 binary compounds with 20 different crystal structures, and 130 ternary or higher-order alloys. Testing typically included hardness vs. temperature, elastic modulus determination, and toughness evaluation via a room-temperature chisel test. Four alloy systems, including only two types that are of the simplest structures, showed substantial room-temperature toughness: Al-Ru, Ru-Sc, Ir-Nb, and Ru-Ta. Of these the last and the first are the most promising. Special features of the Ru- Ta (L1o) alloys are their room-temperature impact resistance and high-temperature strength. AIRu (B2) alloys can be tougher than the L1o structures and most are also ductile in compression at room temperature. Alloying experiments with B, Cr, and Sc show beneficial effects on ductility, oxidation resistance, and high-temperature strength.

ABSTRACTNb-silicide based in-situ composites consist of a ductile Nb-based solid solution with high-strength silicides, and they show excellent promise for aircraft engine applications. The Nb-silicide controls the high-temperature tensile behavior of the composite, and the Nb solid solution controls the low and intermediate temperature capability. The aim of the present study was to understand the effects of substitutional elements on the room temperature tensile behavior and identify the principal microstructural features contributing to strengthening mechanisms.

Intermetallic matrix composites are candidates for ultrahigh temperature service when light weight and high temperature strength and stiffness are required. Recent efforts to produce intermetallic matrix composites have focused on the titanium aluminide (TiAl) system with various ceramic reinforcements. In order to optimize the composition and processing of these composites it is necessary to evaluate the range of structures that can be produced in these materials and to identify the characteristics of the optimum structures. Normally, TiAl materials are difficult to process and, thus, examination of a suitable range of structures would not be feasible. However, plasma processing offers a novel method for producing composites from difficult to process component materials. By melting one or more of the component materials in a plasma and controlling deposition onto a cooled substrate, a range of structures can be produced and the method is highly suited to examining experimental composite systems. Moreover, because plasma processing involves rapid melting and very rapid cooling can be induced in the deposited composite, it is expected that processing method can avoid some of the problems, such as interfacial degradation, that are associated with the relatively long time, high temperature exposures that are induced by conventional processing methods.

Ni-Cr-Co type Nickel-based super alloy Inconel 740H was studied. The effect of Nb, Al and Ti on the equilibrium of this alloy was analyzed by JMatPro software. The amount of Ti and Nb should be controlled by 1.50wt.%, and meanwhile, Al should be 1.0-2.0wt.%. If Mo and W were added the amount of Mo should be in the range of 1.0-2.0wt. %, and W should be about 1.0wt.%. Based on these results, three types of new alloys were designed, which contain Ni-Cr-Co-Mo type (1#), Ni-Cr-Co-W type (2#) and Ni-Cr-Co-Mo-W type (3#). Compared with the Ni-Cr-Co type Inconel 740H alloy, the room temperature strength, high temperature strength and high temperature durable performance of the three new alloys improved, which can provide the evidence and reference to optimize the chemical composition of Inconel 740H alloy, i.e., adding 1.50wt.% Mo and 1.0wt.% W individually or together.

AbstractMulticomponent nickel base intermetallics with the L12 structure were evaluated as high temperature structural materials. The compounds were based on the γ' composition of PWA 1480, a high strength single crystal nickel base superalloy. The best balance of properties in the compound was achieved with <111> oriented single crystals but no significant advantage could be demonstrated over the precipitation hardened superalloys. Insufficient impact resistance was a major deficiency of the L12 compounds. Other nickel base intermetallics were also evaluated but showed little advantage over superalloys.

ABSTRACTIn recent years, interest in high temperature aluminum alloys has increased. However, nearly all the data available is for simple extrusions. This paper looks at the properties of sheet made from a rapidly solidified Al-10Fe-2.5V-2Si alloy. The sheet is made by direct forging followed by hot rolling, this is readily scalable, so allowing the production of large sheet. The room temperature strength and fracture toughness of the sheet are comparable to those of 2014-T6. The high temperature strength, specific stiffness and corrosion resistance are excellent. Recently, improved thermomechanical processing and new alloys have allowed higher strengths and fracture toughness values to be obtained.

Nb–silicide in situ composites have great potential for high-temperature turbine applications. Nb–silicide composites consist of a ductile Nb-based solid solution together with high-strength silicides, such as Nb5Si3and Nb3Si. With the appropriate addition of alloying elements, such as Ti, Hf, Cr, and Al, it is possible to achieve a promising balance of room-temperature fracture toughness, high-temperature creep performance, and oxidation resistance. In Nb–silicide composites generated from metal-rich binary Nb-Si alloys, Nb3Si is unstable and experiences eutectoid decomposition to Nb and Nb5Si3. At high Ti concentrations, Nb3Si is stabilized to room temperature, and the eutectoid decomposition is suppressed. However, the effect of both Ti and Hf additions in quaternary alloys has not been investigated previously. The present article describes the discovery of a low-temperature eutectoid phase transformation during which (Nb)3Si decomposes into (Nb) and (Nb)5Si3, where the (Nb)5Si3possesses the hP16 crystal structure, as opposed to the tI32 crystal structure observed in binary Nb5Si3. The Ti and Hf concentrations were adjusted over the ranges of 21 to 33 (at.%) and 7.5 to 33 (at.%) to understand the effect of bulk composition on the phases present and the eutectoid phase transformation.

In this paper,effect of the different forging processes on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the flat flat billets of TA15 titanium alloy was investigated.The flat billiets of 80 mm×150 mm×L sizes of TA15 titanium alloy are produced by four different forging processes.Then the different microstrure and properties of the flat billiets were obtained by heat treatment of 800 °C~850 °C×1 h~4h.The results show that, adopting the first forging temperature at T1 °C、slow cooling and the second forging temperature at T2°C 、quick cooling, the primary αphases content is just 10%, and there are lots of thin aciculate phases on the base. This microstructure has both high strength at room temperature and high temperature, while the properties between the cross and lengthwise directions are just the same. So the hot processing of the first forging temperature at T1 °C、slow cooling and the second forging temperature at T2°C 、quick cooling is choosed as the ideal processing for production of aircraft frame parts.

High-strength steel tube HCM9M (LowC-9Cr-2Mo) steel, which shows the intermediate high-temperature strength between austenitic stainless steels and commercial low-alloy steels, has been developed. It has superior weldability, workability and oxidation resistivity. At present HCM9M tubes have been in-service test as reheater and superheater tubing at the 165,000 kW boiler in Japan without trouble. This report deals with the practical properties of HCM9M steel, service test experience and high temperature strengthening mechanism of the steel from morphological viewpoint of carbide.

Abstract In petroleum refinery plants, materials with high sensitization resistance are required. 347AP has particularly been developed for such applications and shows good sensitization resistance owing to its low C content. However, further improvement in high temperature strength is required for high temperature operations in complex refineries, such as delayed cokers. Recently, a new austenitic stainless steel (low C 18Cr-11Ni-3Cu-Mo-Nb-B-N, UNS No. S34752) with high sensitization resistance and high strength at elevated temperatures has been developed. In this study, the mechanical properties and microstructures of several aged specimens will be reported. By conducting several aging heat treatments in the range of 550–750 °C for 300–10,000 h on the developed steel, it was revealed that there were only few coarse precipitates that assumed sigma phase even after aging at 750 °C for 10,000 h. This indicates that the newly developed steel has superior phase stability. The developed steel drastically increased its Vickers hardness by short-term aging treatments. Through transmission electron microscopy observations, the fine precipitates of Cu-rich phase were observed dispersedly in the ruptured specimen. Therefore, the increase in Vickers hardness in short-term aging is possibly owing to the dispersed precipitation of Cu-rich phase. There was further increase in Vickers hardness owing to Z phase precipitation; however, the increment was smaller than that caused by Cu-rich phase. The newly developed alloy demonstrated excellent creep rupture strength even in the long-term tests of approximately 30,000 h, which is attributed to these precipitates.

Studies have been conducted as to the effect of Cu, Mn, Fe concentration changes in Al-Cu-Mn-Fe-Ti alloy, the conditions of thermal and deformational treatment of ingots and extruded rods 40 mm in diameter on the microstructure, phase composition and mechanical properties. It has been determined that changing Al-6.3Cu-0.3Mn-0.17Fe-0.15Ti alloy to Al-6.5Cu-0.7Mn-0.11Fe-0.15Ti causes an increase in the strength characteristics of extruded rods at the room temperature both after molding and in tempered and aged conditions, irrespective of the conditions of thermal treatment of the initial ingot (low-temperature annealing 420 °С for 2 h, or high-temperature annealing at 530 °С for 12 h). Increasing the extruding temperature from 330 to 480 °С, along with increasing Cu, Mn and decreasing Fe in the alloy Al-Cu-Mn-Ti, is accompanied by the increased level of ultimate strength in a quenched condition by 25% to 410 MPa, irrespective of the annealing conditions of the original ingot. An opportunity to apply the Al-6.3Cu-0.3Mn-0.17Fe-0.15Ti alloy with low-temperature annealing at 420 °С for 2 h and the molding temperature of 330 °С has been found to produce rods where, in the condition of full thermal treatment (tempering at 535 °С + aging at 200 °С for 8 hours), a structure is formed that ensures satisfactory characteristics of high temperature strength by resisting to fracture for more than 100 hours at 300 °С and 70 MPa.
