Vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is an introduced species of shrimp that has been widely farmed in brackishwater ponds in Indonesia. Vannamei shrimp farmed in ponds with high stocking density and fed with high protein feed produce large quantities of residues/waste. Reducing the waste could be achieved by using biofloc technology to manipulate the carbon nitrogen ratio (C/N ratio) in the culture media. This study aimed to evaluate the formation of flocks grown on different carbon sources in the rearing media of vannamei shrimp. The study used an experimental method with a completely randomized design consisting of five treatments, namely: control, molasses, wheat flour, corn starch, and sugarcane juice, each with three replications. Data analysis was carried out on shrimp growth and survival, FCR, floc size, floc volume, floc nutrient content, and water quality parameters that support the life of vannamei shrimp. The results showed that different carbon sources had a significant effect on the shrimp growth. Flour is the best source of carbon to support the formation of flocks which increases the growth of vannamei shrimp with a weight gain of 0.56 g, a length of 1.96 cm, and a survival rate of 90.67%, with an FCR value of 1.10, a floc protein content of 27.15%, a floc size of 450 microns, and a floc volume of 88 mL/L. The measured variations of DO, pH, temperature, salinity, and and ammonia were 5.5-6.5 mg/L, 6.8-8.0, 26°C-30°C, 30-33 ppt, and 0.1-1.54 mg/L, respectively. This research demonstrates that the provision of different carbon sources has an effect on increasing flocks and are able to increase the growth and survival of vannamei shrimp. It is recommended that more specific research is needed to find the best and maximum dose of wheat flour carbon sources for floc formation, growth and survival of vannamei shrimp.

pH is one of the important water quality parameters in aquaculture. This study aimed to observe the growth performance and survival rate of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) Rajadanu strain reared in culture media with different pH levels. Fish (length: 3.60 ± 0.18 cm; weight: 1.68 ± 0.18 g) were stocked in nine aquariums (40 cm x 40 cm x 30 cm) for 10 days with a stocking density of 25 fish per aquarium. The treatments used were (A) pH 4-5, (B) pH 5-6, and (C) pH 6-7, with three replications. A commercial feed containing 28% protein was given daily and as much as 3% of the total biomass. The observed data were analyzed using variance analysis (ANOVA), followed by Duncan test. The results showed that the pH treatments did not affect the growth (length and weight) and survival rate of common carp Rajadanu strain (P>0.05). The best growth was achieved by the fish group reared in water with a pH range of 6-7 (length = 0.38 cm; weight = 0.17 g). The highest survival was attained by the fish group reared in water with a pH range of 5-6 (90.66%).

The efficacy and suitability of dietary whole wheat flour supplementation was evaluated on the growth performance and survival of rohu (Labeo rohita). The study was conducted in 12 experimental aquaria at the Wet Laboratory, Department of Aquaculture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. A total of 180 fingerlings of mean initial weight of 1.744±00 g were stocked at the same stocking density (268 fingerlings/m3). Four different treatments (T1, T2, T3 and T4) each with three replications were performed having different level of whole wheat flour such as 0% whole wheat flour (T1), 5% whole wheat flour (T2), 10% whole wheat flour (T3) and 15% whole wheat flour (T4). Feeds were supplied at 5% body weight twice daily in the morning at 9.00 am and in the afternoon at 5.00 pm throughout the study period. The rations were adjusted every week when new weights of the fish for various experimental aquariums were determined. At the end of the 63 days study period, the growth performance parameters such as mean final weight (g), weight gain (g), percent weight gain (%), specific growth rate (%/day) and the best feed utilization in terms of food conversion ratio were found highest at treatment 4 where fishes were fed with inclusion of 15% whole wheat flour and lowest was found at treatment 1 (fed with inclusion of 0% whole wheat flour). Water quality parameters were within the acceptable range and survival rate was found 100% in all treatment. Therefore, it can be concluded that treatment 4 (highest growth performance and survival rate of L. rohita with supplementation of 15% whole wheat flour containing diet) can be chosen by fish farmers for commercial culture of this species. White shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is considered able to replace black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) as a positive diversification.  Excellence shrimp vaname (L. vannamei) is a high nutritional value, fast growth and able to use the water column as a place to live so it can be maintained with high stocking density. Natural feed (phytoplankton) can be stimulated through fertilization.  The study was carried out at the Ghonebalano Coastal Fish Seed Center (BBIP), aiming to determine the effect of using different doses of urea and TSP fertilizer on the growth and survival of vaname shrimp (L. vannamei). The study used a Completely Randomized Design with three levels of combination treatment of fertilizer doses, namely treatment A urea 0.5 g/TSP 0.7 g; treatment B Urea fertilizer dose 0.7 g/TSP 0.9 g and treatment C dose Urea fertilizer 0.9 g/TSP 1.11 g. The results showed that the highest growth was obtained in treatment B i.e. 1.54±0.16 g/individuals, compared with treatment A (1.11±0.08 g/individuals) and treatment C (1.32±0.10 g/individuals). Survival in treatment A was 71.11±3.85%, treatment B was 73.33±6.67% and treatment C was 75.55±3.85%. Analysis of variance at the 95% confidence level (α0.05) showed that the administration of urea and TSP fertilizers differed significantly (0.05>0.03) on growth, but did not significantly influence (0.05<0.58) on the survival of vaname shrimp larvae.

Abstract. Mahariawan IMD, Kusuma WE, Yuniarti A, Beltran MAG, Hariati AM. 2021. Application of wheat flour (Triticum aestivum) on spore density and sporulation efficiency of Bacillus megaterium isolated from Litopenaeus vannamei gastrointestinal tract. Biodiversitas 22: 3709-3715. Bacillus megaterium is frequently used in fish farming, such as white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) pond, which can produce spores with high stability in its implementation. Currently, spore production still requires the availability of high-cost carbon sources. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of different wheat flour doses on spore density and sporulation efficiency of B. megaterium BM1. In flasks, 50 mL of each test medium was treated with different doses of wheat (10, 20, 30 and 40 g. L-1, respectively) and glucose was used as a control. Each treatment was inoculated with B. megaterium BM1 (2.6 x 108 CFU. mL-1) and incubated in a shaker incubator (120 rpm) at 37 °C for 120 hours. The results showed that the highest vegetative cell concentration (17 x 108 CFU. mL-1), growth rate (0.8 hour-1) and spore (14.7 x 108 spores. mL-1) were found in the wheat flour dose of 30 g. L-1. Furthermore, the highest sporulation efficiency was achieved at 20 g. L-1 of wheat (91.30%) and germination should be done at a dose less than 40 g. L-1. The size of the spores was 1.35-1.39 µm. Thus, 30 g. L-1 of wheat flour is a potential dose to produce spore for probiotic candidates.

Abstract Noodles are popular food and fortified noodles with vital nutrients may build a healthy food habit among people. Oat is a cereal with high nutritional value. Therefore, the current research was undertaken to increase the nutrient content of noodles using oat flour and to evaluate the effects of oat flour on the physicochemical properties and sensory attributes of the noodles. The noodles were prepared following five different formulations (oats: wheat flour in the ratio of 0:100, 20:80, 25:75, 30:70 and 35:65). Other ingredients like table salt, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), corn starch, and water were equal in each formulation. To evaluate the best formulation, proximate analysis, functional characteristics and sensory assay were conducted on samples. The formulation having 70% of wheat flour and 30% of oat flour showed the best performance in proximate analysis and sensory evaluation. This formulation of noodles has 13.03% of protein, 1.51% of fat, 1.46% of total ash, 0.76% of fibre, 73.87% of carbohydrate, 361.19 kcal of energy and also a good amount of important minerals. The formulation regarding wheat flour 70% and oat flour 30% may be suggested to the large population who are habituated to consume noodles regularly as the main diet.

Entomopathogenic fungi like Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae and Lecanicillium lecanii are used in biological control of agricultural insect pests. Their specific mode of action makes them an effective alternative to the chemical Insecticides. Virulent strains of Entomopathogenic fungi are effectively formulated and used as bio-insecticides world-wide. Amenable and economical multiplication of a virulent strain in a large scale is important for them to be useful in the field. Culture media plays a major role in the large-scale multiplication of virulent strains of Entomopathogens. Different substrates and media components are being used for this purpose. Yet, each strain differs in its nutritional requirements for the maximum growth and hence it is necessary to standardize the right components and their optimum concentrations in the culture media for a given strain of Entomopathogen. In the current study, three different nitrogen sources and two different carbon sources were tried to standardize the mass multiplication media for seven test isolates of Entomopathogenic fungi. A study was also conducted to determine the ideal grain media for the optimum conidial yields of the test isolates. Yeast extract was found to be the best Nitrogen source for the isolates. The isolates tested, differed in their nutritional requirements and showed variation in the best nitrogen and carbon sources necessary for their growth. Variation was also found in the optimum concentration of both the ingredients for the growth and sporulation of the isolates. In the solid-state fermentation study, rice was found to be the best grain for the growth of most of the fungi followed by barley. The significance of such a study in the development of an effective Myco-insecticide is vital and can be successfully employed in agriculture is discussed.
