Sejumlah penelitian terhadap ikan gabus (Channa striata Blkr) telah dilakukan mulai dari pembenihan dan pembesaran, namun masih belum banyak informasi ilmiah terkait performa reproduksi dan larva yang dihasilkan baik dari pemijahan alami maupun pemijahan semi-alami (induksi hormonal). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menentukan teknik pemijahan yang tepat untuk ikan gabus. Dalam penelitian ini digunakan induk jantan dan betina dengan tingkat kematangan gonad (TKG) yang seragam (yaitu pada TKG-IV). Penelitian memakai empat perlakuan stimulasi hormon, yaitu A (kontrol, tanpa stimulasi hormon), B (induk jantan dan betina distimulasi hormon), C (induk betina distimulasi hormon), D (induk jantan distimulasi hormon). Hormon yang digunakan untuk menginduksi induk betina dan jantan adalah LHRHa + anti dopamin. Masing-masing perlakuan menggunakan tiga pasang induk. Parameter performa reproduksi yang diamati meliputi fekunditas, diameter telur, lama waktu menetas, dan volume kuning telur. Untuk performa larva dilakukan pengamatan laju penyerapan kuning telur, pertumbuhan panjang dan bobot larva, laju pertumbuhan spesifik, dan sintasan. Dari penelitian diperoleh bahwa ikan perlakuan-A dan B mampu berovulasi hingga menetas, perlakuan-C berhasil ovulasi namun gagal menetas, sedangkan perlakuan-D tidak mampu ovulasi. Fekunditas dan derajat penetasan hasil pemijahan alami paling tinggi (1.832 ± 13 butir dan 97,20 ± 2,49%). Namun, waktu ovulasi dan waktu menetas pemijahan alami (159,50 ± 0,50 jam dan 3.210,00 ± 5,00 menit) lebih lama dibanding pemijahan buatan (26,00 ± 2,00 jam dan 2.370.00 ± 15,00 menit). Abnormalitas terjadi pada perlakuan-B (1,30 ± 0,42%), sedangkan larva hasil perlakuan-A tidak ada yang abnormal. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini selain pemijahan alami, ikan gabus dapat dipijahkan secara buatan melalui stimulasi hormon pada induk jantan dan betina.Various studies on snakehead fish (Channa striata Blkr) have been carried out from breeding, nursery, to grow-out. Nevertheless, information regarding reproductive performance and produced larvae either from natural spawning or semi-natural (hormonal induction) spawning are still limited in the literature. This study aimed to determine the appropriate spawning technique for snakehead fish. In this study, the fish males and females were used with a uniform gonad maturity level. The study used four hormone stimulation treatments, namely: A (control, without hormone stimulation), B (male and female parents were hormone-stimulated), C (hormone-stimulated female parent), D (hormone-stimulated male parent). The hormone used to induce female and male broodstock was LHRHa + anti-dopamine. Each treatment used three pairs of parents. Parameters of reproductive performance observed included fecundity, egg diameter, hatching time, and egg yolk volume. For larval performance, observations were made of the rate of egg yolk absorption, growth in length and weight of larvae, specific growth rate, and survival. The research found that fish in treatment-A and B were able to ovulate, and the produced eggs could hatch. Fish in treatment-C managed to ovulate but failed to hatch, while treatment-D could not ovulate. The fecundity and hatching rates of the natural spawning were the highest (1,832 ± 13 grains and 97.20 ± 2.49%). However, the time of ovulation and hatching time for natural spawning (159.50 ± 0.50 hours and 3,210.00 ± 5.00 minutes) were longer than those of artificial spawners (26.00 ± 2.00 hours and 2,370.00 ± 15.00 minutes). Abnormalities occurred in treatment-B (1.30 ± 0.42%), while the larvae from treatment-A were normal. Based on the results of this study, in addition to natural spawning, snakehead fish can be spawned artificially through hormonal stimulation of male and female broodstock.

Rainbow fish (Iriatherina werneri) is a type of partial spawner fish with the little number of eggs production. The high contain of essential fatty acid  (Linoleic acid 18:2 Ω-6) in corn oil was widely used as a source of fatty acid in the broodstock feed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the additional of LA fatty acid in feed for reproduction performance of rainbow fish. This study used a complete random design consists of three treatments and six replicates with different doses of corn oil LA in feed, Ω-6 0%, Ω-6 1%, and Ω-6 2%. Rainbow fish broodstock as sampel test with body weight 0.10-0.18g for females 0.21 ± 0.001 g, were kept separately in each tanks (size 30 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm) with density 15 fish per tanks. Broodstock were given diet three times daily at 08:00 am, 12:00 am and 17:00 pm by at satiation. The trial feed was administrated for 30 days before conducted the mass spawning for seven days with ratio of the male and female broodstock was 1:3. The results showed that treatment without supplementation of Ω-6 corn oil  performed highest number of eggs 290 ± 125, hatching rate 55,99 ± 14,80%, survival rate 8,43% and the proportion of vitellogenic cell was more dominant, but the best of  larval performance was observed in  tretament of Ω-6 1% of highest larval length 3.00 mm and 100% percentage of normal larvae. It can be concluded that the supplementation of  1 % the Ω-6  fatty acid corn oil in the feed to produce reproductive performance was supported by the results of the histology of the eggs and larvae of the best performance in rainbowfish.

Symonanthus bancroftii is a critically endangered dioecious shrub, with only one male and one female plant known in the wild. Micropropagated, clonal plants of the male and female parents were hand-pollinated. Seed was germinated in sterile culture and a subsequent daughter (F1) seedling was multiplied in vitro. Micropropagated plants of the original parents and daughter were reintroduced to a natural habitat site. We detail the first study of pollination biology and reproductive success in this extremely rare species. Floral morphology, flowering phenology, pollen viability, female receptivity and fruit set of reintroduced plants of S. bancroftii were investigated. Flower viability of S. bancroftii shows a 25-day maximum for male flowers, whereas non-pollinated female flowers remain viable for a maximum of 38 days (female parent) and 41 days (daughter), respectively. Flowering of reintroduced male and female plants overlaps from mid-June to early November. Pollen remained viable for at least 8 days after anther dehiscence. Maximum stigma longevity recorded was 28 days (female parent) and 39 days (daughter) and maximum ovule longevity varied from 13 days (female parent) to 28 days (daughter). The mean percentage of flowers setting fruit was 39 ± 13% for female parent plants and 48 ± 4% for daughter plants. Empirical reproductive success measures for male–daughter crosses generally exceeded those of the original parent crosses. The reproductive success of S. bancroftii so soon after reintroduction of plants is a positive sign indicating that rapid accumulation of a soil seedbank is feasible and is thus an important first step towards successful establishment of self-sustaining populations of this critically endangered species.

ABSTRACT Serum concentrations of testosterone, 5α-dihydrotestosterone, oestradiol and progesterone were measured by radioimmunoassay combined with Celite chromatography in male and female Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) during the second half of embryonic life (days 9–17 of incubation) and during the first 5 weeks after hatching. The mean level of each of the four steroids was significantly affected by the age of the birds. An overall effect of sex was detected by analysis of variance only on oestradiol concentrations, with females having higher serum concentrations than males during most of the age range studied. Significant peaks of testosterone and progesterone were also detected around hatching time. These results are consistent with the view that oestradiol is the major hormone implicated in the sexual differentiation of reproductive behaviour in the quail. The relationships between the circulating concentrations of oestradiol during ontogeny and the critical period of differentiation as postulated by currently accepted models is also discussed. J. 24-h intravenous caerulein infusion studies in the rat were combined with in vitro amino acid incorporation studies followed by high-resolution separation of proteins by two-dimensional isoelectric focusing and SDS gel electrophoresis to study the extent to which persistent changes in the biosynthesis of exocrine pancreatic proteins are regulated by cholecystokinin-like peptides. Beginning in the third hour of optimal hormone infusion at 0.25 microgram kg-1 h-1, changes were observed in the synthetic rates of 12 proteins, which progressed over the course of the 24-h study. Based on coordinate response patterns, exocrine proteins could be classified into four distinct groups. Group I (trypsinogen forms 1 and 2) showed progressive increases in synthetic rates reaching a combined 4.3-fold increase over control levels. Group II (amylase forms 1 and 2) showed progressive decreases in synthesis to levels 7.1- and 14.3-fold lower than control levels, respectively. Group III proteins (ribonuclease, chymotrypsinogen forms 1 and 2, procarboxypeptidase forms A and B, and proelastase 1) showed moderate increases in synthesis, 1.4-2.8-fold, and group IV proteins (trypsinogen 3, lipase, proelastase 2, and unidentified proteins 1-4) did not show changes in synthesis with hormone stimulation. Regulation of protein synthesis in response to caerulein infusion was specific for individual isoenzymic forms in the case of both trypsinogen and proelastase. The ratio of biosynthetic rates of trypsinogen forms 1 + 2 to amylase forms 1 + 2 increased from a control value of 0.56 to 24.4 after 24 h of hormonal stimulation (43.5-fold increase). Biosynthetic rates for an unidentified protein (P23) with an Mr = 23,000 and isoelectric point of 6.2 increased 14.2-fold, and the ratio of synthesis of P23 to amylase 2 increased 200-fold during caerulein infusion. During hormone stimulation the anticoordinate response in the synthesis of pancreatic glycosidases (decreased synthesis) and serine protease zymogens (increased synthesis) explain previous observations that showed little change in rates of total protein synthesis under similar conditions.

Previous studies on the deployment of energy to male and female gametes in plants have concentrated on differences among individuals or among related species. We documented temporal patterns of sex allocation within individual wild radish plants grown under controlled conditions. Lifetime investments in pollen and ovules were determined for four unrelated individuals of Raphanus sativus L. (Brassicaceae). Each individual produced 600–1100 flowers over the approximately 5-week flowering period. Mature floral buds were collected daily and ovule number, pollen grain number, pollen size, and pollen to ovule ratio (P:O) were determined for each. Variation in these traits was partitioned into variation among plants and among dates (representing flowering sequence). There was significant variation among plants for all characters, but because plants responded differently to date for three of the characters, further analyses were performed on a plant-by-plant basis. All plants showed significant reductions in pollen number and P:O through time, three plants showed a significant reduction in pollen size with time, and two plants showed a significant reduction in ovule number with time. The observed variation in phenotypic gender among these plants was not environmentally mediated because all plants were grown together in a controlled environment and therefore the differences in allocation to gametes were due to genetic or developmental differences. A result of intraspecific variation in gamete production is that the success of each individual as a male and female parent is likely to vary both within the population and within the flowering season.
